Ran after work yesterday and I was feeling like I wanted to go outside the neighborhood. I use the strava heat maps a lot to figure out places to try out and there was a part of an adjacent neighborhood that had a good sized loop that was popular on strava and I could start/end at a park with a large pond, so I tried that out. It was a nice change of scenery and I would run over there again. My only complaint is that the sidewalks switched sides of the road fairly often. But, the traffic wasn’t crazy through the neighborhood so it wasn’t like I had to stop a lot. And the sidewalks wind through trees along the side of the roads, not right up next to the road the whole time. I really liked that. The pond has a big loop around it, which I only ran a portion of to get back to my end point, but I would guess it was around a mile, and very peaceful.
Today is rest day, and I feel like I need it. Upping to 5 days a week is hard, especially jumping in at a midpoint on this training plan where the weekly mileage is not exactly low. But, I think after a couple of weeks my body will adjust. Until then, I just need some extra sleep.9 -

Since I worked from home yesterday I was able to run at lunch when it was sunny and 45F instead of in the dark and 27F at 6 am. The only downside is that more people were out – my nearest neighbor (who is about a half mile away) and his son were outside so I stopped and chatted with them, went on down the road and had to pet another neighbor’s dog since he was out sunbathing in the yard, and then another neighbor passing in her car stopped to say hi. Life in the country – lol! I’m meeting some friends for another Christmas light run this evening in a different neighborhood. We ran in this housing development last year and it is a hilly one. I may need to stop and take lots of pictures of the lights tonight….
Sounds like a nice new route @martaindale. I also like using MapMyRun to find new routes, especially when I’m out of town and don’t know the area – you should give it a try @run_sara_run next time you are out of town
I’m so sorry your HM and Skip’s marathon were cancelled. I really, really hate there were tornadoes and deaths and destruction and power outages, but I can also empathize with the runners and all their training. The Rocket City Marathon was my 5th marathon. My favorite part was running by the space center. Congrats on making the news!

Sunny, frosty, and low 30s F this morning with no wind. Lack of a breeze is a mixed blessing -- on the one hand, there is nothing to peel the skin off your face. But the flip side is the automobile exhaust hangs around to get sucked into your lungs. New shoes seemed to make a difference, but whether it is physical or psychological I have no way of knowing.
@SummerSkier You're probably right about a rest helping my legs, but when did I ever let reason and common sense interfere with my running wishes?

Taking advantage of another sunny morning and a little more time in the work schedule this week. It's finals week which means break starts next week. For the students anyway, and a much quieter and more flexible time to get work done for me. And hopefully lots of running6 -

I ran 5 miles this morning. It was a really nice run. It was a little chillier than I thought it would be, but it was nice. The temperature was about 53°F and it wasn't particularly windy but I felt cooler than I expected to feel starting out. Then about halfway through though the wind suddenly felt warmer. And all in all it was a good temperature for shorts and a t-shirt. I also saw 3 shooting stars this morning which was kind of cool.

Had an average morning run, nothing exciting other than a flock of pheasants. Got another text message from the national alert system, about air quality, but I think the whole region must get them. I could see the air but it didn't seem too bad. We seem to be in a little pocket that doesn't get it quite as bad.
None of this is about running. But I was encouraged yesterday when the police stopped by - they had got a complaint and were checking furnaces in our area for people burning things that aren't allowed. Once they walked into our furnace room, they immediately saw our newer eco-pea coal furnace and realized we aren't who they were looking for, and everyone relaxed. I'm glad they're checking, although two guys against that big stinky cloud seems like an endless battle.
Daughter's class quarantine is over and she returned to school today. Two hours later, I had to go get my son because HIS class has quarantine now. Again. It must be a teacher who sees many classes, because it seemed like half the school was getting picked up. Next week and also after the holiday break, all schools have to do online learning anyway, which makes sense for allowing for family holiday gatherings. Churches etc are now back down to 30% capacity, but fortunately we meet in a large building with open common areas we can use, so we should be ok.
We've got a busy week/weekend preparing for a Christmas market fundraiser the church is doing for a nonprofit organization we partner with, and Saturday I'm trying to figure out how to be in 3 places at once... probably not going to work but we'll see
I'm so thankful to be feeling healthy! Not to be taken for granted, for sure.7 -
@martaindale Yeah for a new place to run. It sounds nice. Great job on keeping up with your training plan.
@skippygirlsmom I missed that your HM was canceled until I read @Teresa502 's post. Sorry to hear that, but certainly understandable given the circumstances.
@Tramboman I love your sleasy runs. LOL
Nice running everyone. I liked and hugged as appropriate.
I didn't work today, but spent most of the day at mom. She was having 3 replacement windows installed, so helped her move stuff out of the way and stayed with her while the workers were there. They worked from about 1 - 6 and didn't quite get done. They will finish tomorrow. I'm working, but my neighbor agreed to go down to be with her while they are there. She's not afraid of them, but the main thing is being sure she hears what they say and answer appropriately.
For some reason, I was really, really tired when I got home, so just did a mile walk on the treadmill. I didn't even do my back exercises. No sure why sitting around and working on a jigsaw puzzle all afternoon would tire me out, but it did.3 -
5 miles this evening. Was hot and windy. 'Nuff said.
December total: 28 miles.3 -
My local women’s running group had a holiday party and run tonight. Most in the group meet in the mornings to run, but I never can join since I leave so early for work. Everyone brought a gift, and we did a little game, as well as a cookie exchange. Only part of the group ended up running, and since we had a variety of levels, we kept it short and only did 2.25 miles. Several of us like to run in the evenings, so I agreed to coordinate a run after Christmas.

70 degree humid warm again this morning. Is it really Dec?.
74.44 miles Dec to date out of 100 planned. or less. 19.85 left for run the year. Was pacing myself this month to work on speed and also not complete the challenge too early, but sometimes a longer run just feels better. (endorphin addict much?) I am at 124 miles under 10 in a row now and most of the time it does not feel as difficult. Currently at .4962 of miles under 10/total miles. If I get the last 20 then I should be exactly at 50%.
Not sure yet what goals to set for next year. I guess that's why we take it one month at a time.
Nice to read the check ins this week.

On the temperature roller coaster, we are back up in the heat with temps approaching what I run in during the summer. Luckily, today was an easy 3 miles so I slowed it down and kept it easy. Easy doesn’t feel as easy in 100% humidity but kept the HR reasonable. Ready for the next downhill on the roller coaster!
In non-running news, my couch is finally getting delivered tomorrow! I ordered it in April and moved the couch we had to the other house in August, so our main house has been couch-less for 5 months. I have missed a couch sooooo much! I can’t wait to stretch out and get comfy!7 -
So much great running going on and I was so far behind... I did 'like' and 'hug' where appropriate.
@Tramboman and @martaindale I think keeping its least should be our new motto 😁
@polskagirl01 - glad your daughter is off of quarantine but sorry about your son now! We just had a local elementary school put the entire 6th grade on quarantine with nearly 40 positive cases and 100s of close contacts. 😳
@run_sara_run - I agree with @Teresa502 on finding running routes wherever you go. I usually look for local trails online with various running apps and also check with people at the hotels or even at running stores. We had a waiter one time who gave me some great recommendations in New Mexico. I love checking out new places to run and exploring.
I haven't posted my mileage update this month yet I don't think. I am still hoping to make the 100 mile club but it is in serious jeopardy after missing so many days with all the driving for our trip to No CA. I had not planned for that at all in my goal estimate.
Todays run I expected to be great. I was late going out but it was still a cool 51F out. We were without power for 12-13 hours yesterday because of the rain and wind storm and I went to bed early because we had no power and it was cold in the house so why not! I slept for nearly 9 hours and 5 of those were 'deep sleep' but the app gave me only 88% sleep efficiency and said my preparedness for the day was a 1 out of 5. When I started running I was really expecting to go, go, go but my legs and body were not onboard and felt so tired. I guess maybe there is something to the sleep app ratings after all. I tend not to look at them much and only looked because I did feel so tired.

Second day in a row of getting a morning run in. This time a little bit earlier and on a different section of the canal. It was chilly but good weather. I'm really glad we got it done because the afternoon turned very rainy and it's miserable cold rain now.
A two-week streak now - but it will probably be over soon. Maybe tomorrow. I did not intend for it as a goal, just trying to keep more consistent in December than the rest of this year, and I overshot a little so far. I also have been trying to make up a little for skipping my long run over the weekend.
I went to see the new West Side Story movie late afternoon matinee at the movie tavern. I loved it even though I have a hard time with musicals and suspension of disbelief But it was beautiful. I had never been to the movie tavern before either and that was awesome. Reclining comfy chair and cocktails is the way to see a movie for sure.5 -
Husband sick the past four days, multiple negative Covid tests so maybe just a bad cold. But unable to run with me and the neighborhood isn’t safe for a solo female, so we took a walk and I ran intervals - the side streets out and back as he walked the main street so I was never too far from him. Re: dangerous neighborhood - I feel sometimes like I whine a lot and it isn’t really that bad here, well Memphis was just reported to be the most dangerous city in the US in terms of violent crimes per capita. We’re 2nd I think in murders per capita. So, yeah, I guess it’s not just my perception, it really is that bad here. We had to stop twice for street racers on our walk past the drug house. It would be funny if it weren’t true!
It’s been gorgeous weather the past few days and is supposed to be storms again starting tomorrow.
I felt like my heart rate was a little higher than expected until I looked at my paces and saw I was running my little intervals at 9 minute pace. So, faster than my usual.7 -

@skippygirlsmom I wasn't sure if I should hug or like your post, so I liked it. At least you seem to have a good sense of humor about it all.
@martaindale Nice running and yeah for the couch getting there before Christmas!
@shanaber I would hate to see what my sleep rating would be. Can it be negative? Way to get the run in when you weren't feeling it.
@katharmonic Nice running. I have been to a movie tavern before. I loved it too. Almost feels like you're at home in a nice comfy chair.
@rheddmobile I hope your DH feels better soon. I applaud you for not taking one negative test as the gospel. There are so many false negatives out there. Glad you were able to go for a run...and great pace too. I have heard that Memphis is a dangerous city. I didn't realize it was that bad. Glad you stayed close to DH.2 -

Today was 5 miles at HM pace. Back to sports bra running with temps in the 70’s and humidity in the upper 90% range. I wasn’t sure I would be able to keep up a HM pace in those conditions as the weather impacts my pace significantly. I will guarantee I couldn’t have done it this summer, when these temps are the norm. But, I did it! In fact, for 4.5 miles of it I was actually under target pace. The last half mile was slower and I could feel my blood sugar starting to head south, but I told myself that this is expected. If I were actually racing, I would have had a gu about a half a mile earlier to head this off. So, all in all, very happy with the workout. It was a confidence builder to be able to keep that pace up. I couldn’t do it for 13 miles in weather like this, so I hope race day weather cooperates, but 5 miles is nothing to sneeze at!7 -
@katharmonic That style of movie theater is my favorite way to see a movie and the way most theaters are set up around here now. Well over 20 years ago we had the original (or maybe one of the original) movie tavern, Alamo Drafthouse in Austin. It expanded its footprint across southern Texas and really had an impact on the way movie theaters operated in this area. Cocktails, decent food and a zero tolerance phone policy. In fact, one of their advertisements used to be voicemail complaints from people who got kicked out for having their phones out during the movie! Right before the movie there was a warning to “keep your phone dark, silent, and out of sight”. They also had dedicated kid times for movies. And special movie karaoke nights. It was amazing. Nowadays, I don’t live near an Alamo, but we have other options that are similar. None are as strict about the phones, and I do miss that.
@rheddmobile I have seen you mention your neighborhood being unsafe before but I didn’t realize Memphis as a whole was that bad. I’m glad your husband also runs so you can get outside and feel safe. I saw your run on strava with all the side street out and backs and thought, that looks like a painful way to do a neighborhood run! Now hearing what was going on, it makes more sense. Hope your husband feels better and you avoid catching the bug.
@shanaber Yes! New motto!4 -

@martaindale great job on your HM paced run! Time to enjoy that new couch!

I'm behind on posting again, but I did run yesterday and today. It was warm and humid yesterday and the wind was crazy. I ran 5 miles and it felt pretty tough. I ran 6 miles today. It was still warm, but not as warm as yesterday and not so humid or windy, but still shorts and tank top weather. Hard to believe it is December. It was a nice run though and I saw a fox near the park.

Nearly ran the whole way of a 5k today but it was 16°C / 61°F and sunny and I was wilting at 3k so I stopped for a quick drink at the bubble tap at 3k then ran the rest of the way. Happy about this, since I'm not good running at temperature over 10°C.8

I just went back and looked at my previous post and see that autocorrect struck again. I was trying to say that our new motto should be 'keeping it sleasy'. @martaindale figured it out though!
The weather has gotten to be so weird. Not sure to say again because it seems to be happening over and over but even worse this year. You all in TX and some other areas are having summerish weather and other areas are getting terrible storms and tornados. We are typically warm compared to the rest of the US except for maybe Florida and instead this year we are cold and rainy.
No run for me today. Just lots of errands and things to get done.6 -

@quilteryoyo very seldom is my boss ever mad at me. We have known each other for over 20 years and he knows how I work and I know him. If I'm doing something he doesn't like he just calls me and same here. When I feel like I'm getting the run around from others who don't seem to have the same urgency as I do about something important our big guy will just say "who do you need?" and bam they all get an email. Kathie needs you stop whatever you are doing and help her. It works out nice for me LOL
Going back to read the thread.5 -
Had another flare up with my back yesterday. Was able to get an appointment with the orthopedic doctor today. Currently waiting in his office. I hope I can get some answers.8

Sunny, low 30s F, with a tiny breeze from the southwest. Spent 1 k getting loose; 4 ks running well; 1 k tightening up; and 1 k enduring until the end.
@quilteryoyo I'm sorry your back is still giving you fits. Hope the doctors can find some answers to get you healed up.
I think "keeping it sleasy" works pretty well as a motto.
