Less Alcohol ~ JANUARY 2022 ~ One Day At A Time

My usual goal, 16-20 AF days per month.
My schedule pretty much dictates my AF days. It will be different until March, our local 3 arenas opened up!! There is senior/parent tot skating from 9-10am Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the biggest arena, the ice surface is sunken down, so quite warm for skating. The other 2 are the temperature of the outside.
I will be AF on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays for the next few months.
Diary style is how I keep track
Friday January 7th - Drinks, Mulled Cider with Spiced Rum. Planned drinks for Saturday also.
Rolling total: 5AF days out of 7 days.4 -

Wow, so cool that you worked for an Ottawa company. Ottawa is so beautiful. I live very far from there now, but grew up going there a fair bit.
Did you get to skate on the Rideau canal?
@Lilylady3k thank you for that beautiful saying!! I think that it could apply to so many other things besides snow, we all can find joy in everything if we look for it.
Quite honestly, it is so much more of a priority for me now that I have entered my 60s than it was previously, being mindful of finding joy.5 -

I have to admit I am having fun with my 'sock man/woman' and it makes me smile each day and each day makes me poke fun at my drinking. To the point I don't want to take the sock off and take a sip. So just thinking of more creative ways to dress up the bottle keeps me smiling without alcohol to have fun!
Thank you to everyone who can bare with me on this journey, whatever we get need to get from point A to B. I am for what ever works!
True @lmlmrn what ever helps us through this journey and gets us from A........to........B.
Lovely chain pull necklace and pour strainer hat on Mrs. S
When are the little "nips" gonna show up? This I gotta see.
Thank you for bringing humor to our sometimes stressful daily situations.

So, I've got 1/7 days AF this month, which is already better than October, right? Actually, since my goal is "mindfulness," it still counts. I did not drink mindlessly or out of habit!
I've been doing TAE (@sarah7591 https://learn.thisnakedmind.com/the-alcohol-experiment-registration), but I'm just not feeling it so much this time. I read my old journal entries and find nothing has changed. I can only relate to about 30% of what she says. HOWEVER, that 30% is powerful. I really love the videos on cravings and discomfort. I am very grateful that my alcohol cravings only come around my "witching hour" and they disappear quickly if I don't feed them. If any of you have ever quit smoking (or tried and failed), you know what I mean!
Yeah, you might have hit your limit as to what benefit TAE can give you, it's a great first start, but it's not a comprehensive program. If you benefitted from it, but feel like you have reached your limit, perhaps consider further resources.
I feel like I got what I needed from it. I've seen other people do very well on the program, so I would definitely recommend it. I'm just not the kind of drinker she is targeting.3 -

I wasn't either. I benefitted from it, but it was other resources that drew me to the conclusion that I wanted to quit completely and that helped me quit. TAE was just an excellent, use friendly starting point.3 -
MissMay's interesting(?) facts: the phrase, On or off the wagon.
The ‘wagon’ in this American expression refers to the water wagons used to sprinkle water on the streets to keep the dust down. During the times of Prohibition in the 19th century, men often climbed onto these wagons and took an oath they would give up alcohol and drink only water. This gave rise to the expression ‘to be on the water cart/wagon’; it was later shortened to ‘on the wagon’.
When these individuals broke their pledge and started hitting the bottle again, they were said to have ‘fallen off the wagon’.11 -

I had to laugh when you recognized the strainer as a 'pour' strainer I will have to give the little 'nips' some thought hmm I am sure I can find something. You know me
Was a bit of touch and go with the alcohol this afternoon. Weekends right now are my danger zones. So instead of eating out at any of our local hang outs and having a pitcher of beer, then the beer nap. We ordered pizza and watched a movie at home. DH did have a few beers but that did not bother me at the house.
So I think I can make it past the witching hours tonight!9 -
Posting for accountability. Day 15 AF.
12/25 - 12/31 AF
1/1 - 1/8 AF
Off to see my new grandbaby (#4) tomorrow. Can't wait!

Day 8 AF
Bubble baths and hot chocolate are helping most on evenings.
Witching hour over.
Hope everyone is having a good weekend7 -

On day 10 and doing good. I really want to make the 30 days. Last night I had Kombucha in a wine glass and it was really good. Best to all of you whatever you decide to do.9
-
@tmbg1 Less is always good! I am still one day at a time. Hang in there anything less than before is something to congratulate yourself for.
@sarah7591 Grats on day 10!
What type of kombucha do you drink? I have heard all about the health benefits and I really want to find one that I like, but I tried one at a farmer's market and omg... the vendor poured me a sample, watched me take a sip, It. Was. The. Most. Foul. Thing! and there was his little face smiling expectantly at me as I struggled to swallow. I said it was delicious and bought some
I know there must be others that taste better, nothing that bad could be having such a big following, so I curious how to find something palatable that is healthy.7 -
Still at 6 days AF. Saturday night we decided on date night, unplanned. We shared a bottle of Spanish Albarino wine and had home-made smoked pulled-pork tacos. I did enjoy my evening since date-nights are a rare occurrence these days but I do have to account for it and it cost an AF day. There's no free ride.
Off to run now and work on my health...7 -
As I progress through TAE I have realized that I have more than one habit, compulsion, indulgence or whatever word might describe having too much of something we know we should have less of. This is not specifically on topic so I will put it in a spoiler, but my realization has only come about as I stopped drinking daily so it is related in that the less alcohol helped me to see it.Without going into lengthy detail one of them is, what I guess you might call, a news cycle addiction. I have known for a long time that I should cut down on my news consumption, but only now have I realized I have a problem with it. Every morning one of the first things I do is look to see what is going on, and then I gasp and get a rush of adrenalin (not in a good way) when I see something awful happened to someone, or someone said something terrible, or someone did something terrible, or something is happening somewhere that scares me for the future... there is always something yada yada yada rinse and repeat. I find myself stomping into my husbands office (works from home) saying "Look at this!!" and it is affecting him now. I have to get a handle on it and I have no idea how, just saying I won't look at all has not worked, cutting down has not worked, so I am thinking I will treat it as I might treat any other addiction. If anyone has experienced this and knows of support for this please let me know.8

@Fit_Happens_2021 You can buy the Snynergy Kombucha at most stores (Whole Foods; Target, Publix). Last night I had the Pomegranate which was really good, I also like the Cranberry. We have a local place that makes it and you can buy it on tap which I like. I love it because it is not too sweet. Some people can't stand it though. I do think it is good for your gut! Hope this helps!7 -
I was AF last night and I daresay I almost regretted it! I drank my tea and Sparkling Ice, took my melatonin (falling asleep is my issue and the main reason I drink) and went to bed. At 11:00 I got woken up by tornado warnings. I'm a midwestern gal, so I dutifully trudged downstairs and set up camp on the couch, watching the radar the whole time. The hooks of the storm were on the other side, so I wasn't too worried, but I'm also not stupid! Then the warning got extended another half hour. Here came another storm. Eventually they passed and I tried going to bed again, but then the flash flood warnings started. Ugh! Needless to say, it was a rough night and I'm feeling like a major zombie today, but I DID NOT DRINK! 2/8 days AF.
@sarah7591 I've had that kind of Kombucha. I bought it at my local Kroger. I really liked it!11 -
Ugg! the sock came off Fri night after bowling... and unfortunately didn't get put back on until this (Sun) morning! I'm feeling a bit sluggish now, missing the wonderful freshness and energy I had been feeling last week. I am trying not to beat myself up... just reflecting and moving on. Today I will be AF

Don't hear yourself up at all, just try and learn as much as possible from the experience in terms of how you want alcohol to feature in your life moving forward.3 -

Thank you, looking at the apps now We have good health insurance, but I would rather see if I can find self help first. I lost trust in psychotherapists after several bad experiences.4 -

I hear you, there are terrible professionals in every profession unfortunately. It's a shame that with healthcare the patients are so vulnerable that just one or two terrible practitioners can turn people off of important healthcare forever.
If you ever do go back to professional mental healthcare, be picky as hell. If the person doesn't make you feel 1000000% safe and comfortable within the first 10 minutes, just leave and find someone else.
I say this as someone trained in clinical counselling. I usually have to go through 2-5 therapists when I'm looking for a new one. I'm shamelessly picky.4 -
@looneycatblue It's ok the sock came off! Don't beat yourself up, if you can celebrate it was on for so long.
@Xellercin for the link and article on the helpful apps and information
Today I was AF free and it is approaching the witching hours. But as a kudo to myself we went to lunch today, one of my weekend triggers, and I-yes me-kept it to water and a virgin bloody mary then came home and took my (non) alcohol nap. It was wonderful7 -

Virgin bloody Ceasar (I'm in Canada) is my go-to for when I'm out and hit with a "I just want a fancy drink like everyone else!" hissy fit.
I never have them at home and the salt and spice and everything makes it feel adult and fun. I was at a wedding a few months ago that had zero NA options except water and pop, and I don't drink pop.
So virgin bloody Ceasars saved the day for me.6 -
AF this evening. Trying to get back on the right foot and catch up my AF days to my A days.
January accountability: 3/9 days AF
Alcohol: 6 days (12 drinks)
Goal: Limit 1-2 glasses per day; 12-16 AF days per month. Aim to drink no more than 2 nights in a row.

@Fit_Happens_2021 ah, rage porn. That’s pretty much what news is. I think it’s amazing that you are looking at this habit now that you’re paying attention to your drinking. So many benefits to being mindful!
Here’s my hot take- we are being manipulated by news and social media to feel rage and fear. Rage and fear keeps our eyes on the media, and makes them, their advertisers and stockholders gobs of money. They more they keep us engaged by getting us hopped up with emotion, the more they win. Think about it. There are just as many feel-good stories out there that never get the attention they deserve, because good news doesn’t sell. Bad news does. Perhaps knowing we’re being manipulated will make it easier to just turn off the TV, get rid of the news apps on your phone, etc.
Whether you agree with me or not, if the habit of watching the news is setting you up for stress, and is affecting you and your DH’s, you may want to take a media break for a week or two and see how you feel.
As my dad once said when I told him I need to stay on a budget, “stay out of the stores.” Same idea!8
