@martaindale Somehow I missed your race report until I saw the quote from @Tramboman . CONGRATULATIONS on running such an awesome race and all of those PR's. Amazing!
@kgirlhart Nice job on your run yesterday. It snowed here last night and isn't going to get above freezing today, so I'm staying in, unless I decide to wrap up and go for a walk this afternoon. I love walking in the snow, but not when it is this cold....and windy.
@katharmonic I feel your pain. We only got about 2" of snow. It's pretty, but so cold.
@polskagirl01 I'm impressed that you ran on a slippery hill at all. Also impressed that your hill is so long. It's hilly around here, but more of rolling ones, so about 30 seconds to a minute gets me to the top..and I'm pretty slow. I like having a purpose to my workouts too.
@Teresa502 Nice job on your hike and run/walk. I don't think I could do zero drop shoes. I tried a pair that was less than my normal and sent them back.1 -
polskagirl01 wrote: »@martaindale great race - I'm probably most impressed by your 5k PR during a half marathon.
Well, to be fair I haven’t raced a 5k in a few years. I think this year I am going to find some local 5k and 10k to actually race. I have been prioritizing the HM’s and only doing a 10k here and there, usually as part of a trail race, where I will never set a PR.
Legs are feeling pretty good this morning. Last night, I was feeling the effort in my knees, outside of my hips, and my calves. Today, my hips and calves need a good stretch and my knees are a touch achy when I first stand up, but not to bad. Gonna go for a walk later and keep my recovery shoes on in the house today. I remember when I first started racing the HM distance, I would be sore for a couple of days after. It’s nice to see not only a speed improvement but also to see my body recovering better after such an effort.9 -
That's some great racing @martaindale! Great finish time and wow, you really kicked it in for the last mile!0

It is a chilly day here! I ran 2 miles this morning in 35F temps. It was nice just to run at what felt right instead of following a plan with a set pace. I finished in just under 20 minutes, then I took the dogs for a walk before giving them baths. Cleaning the house and then relaxing the rest of the day. Getting ready for hubby to return from his deployment at the end of this week. 😁

Great run @marisap2010 ! I'm sure you are going to love having hubby home!0

Cold day here too- hovering around freezing all day and we are keeping the windows open for ventilation at school all day so there isn’t much respite indoors! Did another couple of miles on the treadmill before work, which I was glad of when I got outside to walk to work and found it was very icy underfoot.

@Faebert It never got above 25°F (-3.6°C) here today. You made a wise decision to run inside.
We got around 3 inches of snow overnight and, like I told @Faebert , it was cold all day. I did wrap up good and headed out for a short walk this afternoon, to see how much snow was still on my driveway since the roads are clear. There are spots that are still snow covered, but I could get out if I really need to. I also walked over to the neighbor's pond to get a snow picture.
I did my fast walk on the treadmill later in the day. I walked one mile at 3.8 mph and did my back exercises.7 -
Dog laps cuz it’s a bit chilly out2

So much great running happening in such cold temps! Wow!
Congratulations @marisap2010 @martaindale @Scott6255 and @eleanorhawkins!! Awesome races and great PRs! @eleanorhawkins - what did you finally end up wearing and were you comfortable?
You all are making me want to sign up for races, something I have put aside for awhile, maybe forever since I can't run HMs any longer.
@Teresa502 - If you haven't worn your 0 drop shoes in a while it can be like starting over to condition your legs to them again. I pretty much don't run in anything more than 3 and have no issues. In fact I think for me the higher drop shoes cause me achilles and foot issues. Maybe try wearing them for one pretty short run or hike each week or every other week. Also I would do some good calf stretches and massage to make your calves feel better.
@quilteryoyo - the snow pictures are lovely. It always looks so pretty to me but then I never have to deal with it.
I am hanging in there, running when I can and mixing up running and walking, more of one or the other depending on how I feel. I am still hoping to get into the 100 mile club again this month.
Today I planned to go for a run. Actually felt pretty great when I started out but that devolved quickly and I ended up mostly doing a fast walk although I did run some short bits. It is great running weather too. Cloudy and cool, low 60's with a breeze and a bit of drizzle. It was threatening to rain the entire time we were out and while I never felt any actual drops, I was soaked when I got home and the sidewalks were wet.
Also saw a very strange sight on the trail today (reminder this is a paved urban trail along a river area). I looked up and saw a motorcyclist! I was shocked and initially thought it was likely some kid or smarta$$ trying to use the trail as a shortcut. When I stopped to go by with Hobbes, since the trail isn't very wide, I realized it was a cop! We often have helicopters circling around and there was one today but seeing the cop on his motorcycle way down on the trail freaked me out a bit. It isn't like he could pull on and off the trail either, there are only entrances at each end and in the middle so he must have had a reason to be that far in. I wanted to ask if everything was ok but he was talking on his radio.
I am hoping the rain stays away. We have agility class tonight but only if it doesn't rain.

It snowed pretty much all day today. And last night. Some of it was sleet and it's pretty light snow so not as much accumulation as might be expected. Maybe 6-8 inches in my area, but some nearby places got way more. I did walk Stella for about an hour but was not up for an outdoor run. Just did a treadmill warmup before strength training. My quads and hamstrings are feeling tight after yesterday's 10 miles.

@shanaber thanks! I ended up wearing my thicker winter leggings, which were probably a bit too warm, a short-sleeved t-shirt and sleeves and my light windbreaker over the top, with one buff round my neck and another on my head. The jacket came off and went round my waist very quickly, the sleeves came off on the first big hill. I could probably have taken less but it gave me confidence and I wasn't in a hurry so didn't mind carrying stuff.
The front of pack crowd shivered before the start in shorts and vests!
It was a bit cold at the very top because we were high up and in clouds. I probably should have put my jacket back on but was too busy at that point trying not to fall off the mountain and break my face :-D

@quilteryoyo Love the snow pics!
It seems like a lot of people are getting some super cold temps. Meanwhile, the high here today is 73 F! But, some cold temps are blowing later this week. When it happens we have another 40 degree drop from high one day to high the next day.
Probably won’t run until later in the week and am planning on climbing a couple of days this week since I’m not really running.5 -

Got plenty of snow yesterday; it was up to my knees on the back patio when I shoveled a path to the birdfeeder. Our street got plowed at 10:30 last night, but it was sufficiently awful looking that I opted to do treadmill instead of trying out to be a hood ornament8 -
Thanks @shanaber ! When the snow is on the trees, it really is pretty. I'm glad that it doesn't usually stay around very long here. So, I get to see it and then it's gone. LOL You are doing great to get out there and do what you can. I hope you figure out what is going on soon.
Thanks @martaindale . Those big swings in temperatures just makes the cold feel colder.
@Tramboman That's a lot of snow. I think the treadmill was a great choice.1 -

Another treadmill day. It has stopped snowing but the streets are a mess - I am with you @Tramboman on not wanting to try to navigate snowbanks and traffic. I did a warmup before yoga but it was only 1.3 miles so I finished up after class to get it to a more respectable total for the day.4 -
I ran this morning, but I’m considering doing another 5 tonight to call this my January HM distance...not all together, but hey work is trying to kill me. I’ve worked every day for the past 3 weeks so I’m fitting in the runs where I can.
@rheddmobile you’re raccoon luring 10 year old made me think of a guy I follow on TikTok, I think they live in Australia but their neighbor if 4 years old and she just does the funniest things, tells him to stand still then throws a water balloon over the fence, she gives him presents under the fence, they are so cute together.
I’ve run a bun
ch of races in person since COVID and all that normally handed out medals still did, the finish line worker (I have been one) wears a mask and gloves and hands the medal (arm straight) out to the finisher. We haven’t had any issues.
@Scott6255 great job on your virtual Half
@martaindale super on the half and new PR!!! Awesome medals, you killed it. I watched on TV (they really need better commentators) and you could see lots of folks cheering. Running math is just a test to show we can’t add, subtract while running.
@quilteryoyo beautiful pictures of the snow, the pond looks like a painting. It’s been freezing cold here too but we didn’t get the snow, to the North, South, East and West did but we were lucky and we did not. However, it was 25F when I ran this morning, the upswing was no wind.
@shanaber Strange about the cop on the trail. I would have been dying to ask why he was there.
@eleanorhawkins glad your choice of clothes work out.

Bike ride today, plan said 35 minutes and I did 41, but if you subtract slightly slower school drop-off, it was just about right. And I did my little weight machine routine. I'm logging food right now and trying to give my body more healthy foods and less sugary stuff.
@quilteryoyo I agree about not becoming a hood ornament. There are a number of roads I won't take when there's snow piled up. No sidewalk and nowhere to go but into a snow drift.3 -
@skippygirlsmom Sounds like you are doing a lot better than I do at working in your running around work. Glad you didn't get the snow, unless you wanted it. Then, I'm sorry you didn't.
I did a mile walk on the treadmill this morning. Yesterday, after my walk in the snow, I sat down and said to myself, "I feel really tired all of a sudden." Wasn't sure why and went ahead and did my walk and exercises. Later in the night I had a slight fever. I have had a runny nose and slightly sore throat the last couple of days. I found out that one of the other teachers in the classroom I usually work at daycare tested positive for CoVID. So, I managed to get a test today, and, you guessed it. I have CoVID again. I'm sure mom has it too, as she has the same symptoms, but a little more severe. She isn't going to get tested though. Turns out that 6 of the 14 staff members at daycare have tested positive within the last week and 4 others are having symptoms and are being tested! Of the 4 that aren't sick, one of them just had CoVID about 3 weeks ago, one had their booster shot about a month ago, and another had CoVID 3 months ago. Not sure about the other one. It's crazy how contagious it is and apparently the vaccine won't keep you from getting it. I guess mom and I were a day late and a dollar short when it came to getting our booster. Since we just had it on Thursday, I'm hoping it isn't going to make the symptoms worse than they would have been.6 -
Ugh, so sorry @quilteryoyo 😢 I'm sure we are all going to get some version of it multiple times before too long. Hope you and your Mom get though it quickly!3
-
@quilteryoyo - I’m so sorry! That’s worrying and frustrating for you. I will keep everything crossed that your symptoms stay mild and that your mum is ok. Rest up and look after yourself.
2.5 more treadmill miles for me this morning. Then I walked to work and went flying on any icy pavement going downhill. Ripped tights (pantyhose) and dented pride, but otherwise all intact.
