January 2022 Monthly Running Challenge

Thanks @shanaber. I was so frustrated at the end of last year at lots of events that impacted my health and fitness. I decided a challenge of ‘little and often’ would be good to rebuild some fitness and some confidence so said I would run every day in January. Stubbornness has pushed me through on the sick days! Not teaching remotely - all schools are under instruction to stay open, come what may, in the UK. But sickness absence is so bad. We have a fifth of our teaching staff with covid or isolating. So I’ve been going in even though I’m not really well enough.
@contrarymarymary - amazing cake! Love it.
@kgirlhart - hope you stay clear and condolences on the loss of your uncle. X
I think this cold is on its way out at last. Two miles on the treadmill (albeit slow) felt quite manageable and I could have done more if I had time. Nearing double my original goal now with a few days left still to run. Yay!

@kgirlhart So sorry about the passing of your uncle. Hope you stay healthy.3 -
@ContraryMaryMary it's great having you back! Nice cake, too. What type of frosting is that?
@kgirlhart so sorry about your uncle. I hope you'll stay healthy & be able to go to the funeral.
@shanaber poor Hobbes, I hope he's feeling better.
My plan has the option for either cross training or a rest day today, and I think I'm going to take the rest day.3 -
Nice running everyone.
@shanaber I am surprised I haven't had real issues before either and also surprised that it wasn't found sooner. I mean, don't they see your spine when doing chest x-rays or something? Anyway, having said that, I have been sitting on a heating pad at night for a couple of years, but thought it was just old age making my back feel tight at night. I never dreamed it was scoliosis or something that needed to be addressed. Where is @Avidkeo ? She hasn't been on here lately, has she?
@Faebert Thanks. Mom and I are okay. Fortunately, we both had a fairly mild case of CoVID. It was probably Omicron, as it doesn't seem to be as serious in most cases. I got out and got a very much needed haircut yesterday. The x-ray was of my back, showing my scoliosis. So, nothing new. You are doing great getting in your runs. I hope you feel better by the weekend and can get in a longer run.
@ContraryMaryMary Happy birthday to your youngest. Love the cake. That is so cute! I'm glad the massage was so helpful, but I'm not sure I would be willing to sit through an hour of torture. I'm such a wimp sometimes.
@kgirlhart Yeah for meeting your goal. You have my sympathies on the death of your uncle and your exposure to CoVID. I hope you avoid it and are able to go to the funeral. One of the things I said when I had it last week was that I hate that any symptom you have can be a symptom of CoVID. Had it been 2 years ago, I wouldn't have thought anything about my symptoms and would have just gone on with my daily life - mostly had a fever for one day and felt tired, but I would have written that off to being lazy or not sleeping well. It's a strange time we are living in. Anyway, like I said, I hope you don't have it.

Good Morning! I haven’t posted here in a very long time but have always wanted to come back. I enjoy reading everyone’s posts. I’ve been sick for the first 3 weeks of January & am so happy to be back running! I’m looking forward to the February Challenge!8
-
Welcome back @BeverlyW1108 . Glad you are feeling better.
For the ladies, one of my favorite running bras is the Handful Y-back. I just purchased a second one. I received a coupon to share with "a friend," so don't know if it will work for more than one person or not. Anyway, if you are looking for a new bra and would like to try them out, here is a 15% off coupon. https://loox.io/z/NkPXlhias3 -
Well I am not keeping up well with the thread dangit but I am remembering to list my runs in challenge hound. I love the way the scale on the graph has to change because of one person (I will not name but whose ribs I hope are feeling better)
I am at 106 miles for the month and expect I may make the 120 total I listed.
Still waiting for our dictionary to be listed in next months opener for the challenge...

Best way to make that happen is to be the mother of the February 2022 Monthly Running Challenge.3 -
I would rather be mother of dragons (or my lil kit gyrll Hai Hai who thinks she is a dragon)

@Shanaber sorry to hear about poor Hobbs.

Ended up climbing last night so I think I'll just let the missed run go. This morning I had 3 miles at (my new faster) HM pace on the schedule. It was cold and clear, so after a mile to warm up, not only did I manage the new pace but ended up 8 secs or so faster than intended each mile. It's so easy to go faster than intended when it is cold and the run is short enough that you won't pay for it!
Has anyone used the RunSmart online workouts? I am looking for some more run-specific strength training and came across this one. It was developed by a PT who runs and has work-outs, yoga, and even some training plans. For a small fee, of course. I will probably sign up and at least try it out, but was wondering if anyone had first hand experience with it. I am starting to feel like my lack of serious injury is partially just luck. Since I am increasing my running over the next year, I think it is a good idea to put in some targeted training to strengthen some weak points.5 -
@SummerSkier Hai Hai is an adorable dragon kitty.
@martaindale Congratulations on your speedy run. Can't help you with RunSmart since I haven't heard of it before.
I've been in a weird mood today. I was supposed to work 4 hours today, to help cover the teacher's lunch breaks, but turned out I wasn't needed. You would think that I would get a lot done with an unexpected day off, but instead I basically did nothing. I had already planned on not getting anything done due to work. Why change the plan, I guess. Anyway, that could be the reason, but I have just felt that something was off all day - like that gut feeling that something is wrong, but you can't put your finger on it.
After another failed attempt to fix mom's oven, I went out for a driveway walk. It was 46°F so I didn't want to miss out on the warm temps since it's not supposed to be above freezing again on Saturday. I really should have ran, but just didn't have it in me. But, I was feeling pretty good after a half mile of walking, so decided to add in a little bit of running here and there for the next 1.5 miles and then another half mile of walking only. So, I'm calling this 2.5 miles a "wun" - walk with a little running thrown in just for fun.6 -
@quilteryoyo don't stress about your lack of wanting to do anything today. It's a place I find myself in often. I found out the world doesn't actually stop during that time. So just let it run it's course and pick up again tomorrow.
Just did a sleasy 6 miles on the treadmill this evening.

Today I got out and ran 5 miles. It was still cold, but not as cold as yesterday. It was an uneventful run, but I felt good and enjoyed it.

Thanks @Scott6255 . You are right, of course. Great sleasy run.
@kgirlhart I'm glad to hear you are still feeling good. Nice run.0 -

I ran 5.04 miles at lunch yesterday. I was hoping to get another run in after work but other obligations presented themselves. I got out early this morning for another 5.12 miles and I think our word “slugly” best described today’s run. I didn’t quit though so there is that. If the precipitation holds off, I plan on channeling my inner @SummerSkier and doing another run at lunch. It’s supposed to snow this afternoon and be really cold tomorrow.
@kgirlhart – I’m glad you are still feeling healthy and I’m sorry for the loss of your uncle.
@SummerSkier - Your Hai Hai reminds me of my Millie Mollie.@Shanaber – So scary about Hobbes getting poisoned. I hope he is back to himself.
She fell asleep on my legs while watching a bird video.
Beautiful cake porn @ContraryMaryMary. Happy Birthday to your little one!
Way to meet and exceed your pace @martaindale! Never heard of RunSmart. I have some strength training workouts on a dvd from Runners World led by Dr. Jordan Metzel, a sports medicine physician in NYC. He is a runner and triathlete. Pretty tough workouts that are designed to strengthen muscles that runners use.
@quilteryoyo – We all need those nothing days every now and then. Don’t forget you’re still recovering from that virus.
3 -
@Teresa502 your cat watching a bird video is so cute.
@quilteryoyo I commented to @Avidkeo on Strava to try to temp her to come back. I'm not sure if her MFP posts are automatic, or if she's actually logging in.
I went out for a slow 17k today. I mean technically, it was within goal race pace🤣, just without the race elevation. But the section in the forest was a lot of hiking and trying not to slip on the icy spots. Some of the sidewalks were a little tricky too, but it was ok.
Here's a little something for the Run the World folks:You've reached my city! Here's your hot chocolate!
Here's where you are. Small city of 90,000 in Silesia, coal country. Lots of pretty places to run and not too far of a drive from some nice mountains as well.
Wikipedia has a button you can click to hear the pronunciation, if you're curious - jusy search for "Jastrzębie-Zdrój". A rough English translation would be "Hawk Spa", although the spa part is mostly just a museum now. And my kid told me that in school they learned that the "Hawk" was actually a bandit's nickname, and the town was named after him instead of the actual bird.8 -

@polskagirl01 THANK YOU FOR THE HOT CHOCOLATE!!! that's cool we reached your city.. Thank you for the tour.1
-
Yes, thank you for the tour @polskagirl01! That will be the only way I get to Poland.4
-
I made it back out for my second run of the day for an additional 3.11 miles. So glad I got to run in Jastrzębie-Zdrój! And thanks for the hot chocolate @polskagirl01! It was just starting to flurry snow out there and the wind was cold!3
-
Hi everyone. @polskagirl messaged me and I realised I missed you all (thanks for the message!)
I took a few months off mostly because I lost my passion for running. I was still running but kinda rudderless.
January I've done a run streak, well almost finished and I'm finding my joy again. Only a couple of days left this month and I'll have run every day.
Nothing new with me, just work, kids etc.
Hope everyone is healthy and doing well. I'll start joining in again because I really have missed you all. And think about you all often.10 -
Welcome back into the group @BeverlyW1108!
Your kitties are adorable @SummerSkier and @Teresa502! Did you all see there is now a 1st cat in the White House?
@martaindale - I have not heard of RunSmart but if it looks like workouts that are reasonable and it isn't too expensive it could be worth a try.
Thanks @polskagirl01 - that hot chocolate was delicious! Love the great info about the town!
Hope everyone in the eastern US is ready for even more cold and snowy weather. It looks like it is going to be really something over the weekend!
Thanks for all the good thoughts on Hobbes the Vizsla. He is feeling better and back to his normal goofy self. He does not like it, however, that I am not allowing him to sniff and investigate as much now and if we stop for any reason he has to get up on a bench or wall where there is nothing to tempt him!
I had planned to get back out this morning with him but we are back in Santa Ana wind mode and he is all snuggled up under a blanket snoring. So I am not going to try braving getting blown around in the wind while trying to run... I only need 11 miles to hit the 100 mile club and that should be doable with 3 days to go.4 -
@quilteryoyo I went back and saw your xrays! Wow that's crazy. You've probably had it your whole life. Pretty pics.
You guys definitely know how to get my attention lol4 -

Hahaha!!!! Compared to this morning's roads, absolutely!!3 -
