Bugger, I'm just not getting better. As in: running doesn't get easier. Either I had a really, really bad cold/bronchitis in March and it's still holding me back (all covid tests negative, including pcr), or I'm low in iron again. Or something else is going on. Getting frustrated.
@quilteryoyo what I was about to ask: How bloody big is your drive? If I was to walk on the typical drive here I'd walk 5 steps in one direction, then 10, then 5 and then 10 and then I walked once around it3 -
Yes, get @7lenny7 into our run the year group for sure!
I did have a productive day. Work meeting planning for summer camp, lots of details worked out. Lady finally called about housing for my guests - we go tomorrow to see it! Got their phone plans fixed and working. Appointment scheduled for the kid with medical issues. And my kid saved a bee who was so weak it couldn't fly. I was sure she had killed it with the pile of sugar and small amount of water she gave it... but it rested and then apparently left the safe spot we made for it. Hopefully made it home, but either way it's not dead in the nest and kid was overly attached and concerned about it - so to her, the bee flew home and I'm leaving it at that 🙂7 -

@7lenny7 That is a very impressive ice beard!!2

Ok @7lenny7 you are all set to join and this is the link
No payment needed - I still had some extra from others. I bought enough that 2 others in addition to @7lenny7 can also join. @Aine8046 - were you wanting to join too? Now is your chance...
Note: when you link to Strava I believe you can have it synch your previous runs to date. You can also add runs manually if you don't have Strava or one of the applications they support.

Sounds like a great run @martaindale .
@Teresa502 I'm like your dad. I have a hard time letting go of things, so I understand. It's good that you are there to help and support him in his decisions. That's a lot of work, both physical and emotional. Great job on your run this morning. Love the picture.
That's the best Ice Beard I think I have ever seen @7lenny7 ! We'd love to have you join Run The World.
@yirara Hang in there and try to not get frustrated. Try to run consistently and the pace and distance will increase, slowly. Are you following a plan of some sort? It was forever when I started running before I had what I actually considered an easy run. My pace was slow. HR may have even been low, but they just didn't feel easy. I didn't think it would ever get that way, but eventually, it did. I think all of us, no matter how much we run, have days or week or longer that are just hard.
My driveway is a quarter of a mile long. I typically don't go all the way to the bottom because it is so hilly. My typical lap is between 0.3 and 0.4 miles, depending on where I turn around. There are pictures I took of my part of my driveway under the spoiler. They are from a couple of summers ago, so it wasn't quite this shady today.
Looking back toward my house from the first curve. I typically run to the right to my shop and then loop down to the left, where my house actually sits.
Just turned the camera around from about where I was taking the first picture. This is the relatively flat area. From the house to just over the hill and back is about 0.2 mile - so I sometimes run that if I am doing speed work so I don't have to run fast uphill. LOL
First down hill spot.
View of the same hill from the bottom looking up. This is the one I almost always walk up when I am running.
The top of a small hill that starts at the bottom of the previous picture.
The curve heading to the last down hill portion.
I used to turn around at the farthest point in this picture. Lately, I have been going a bit further down the hill.
@polskagirl01 Glad things are getting done. Your daughter is so sweet to try to save a bee.5 -

My brother and I met at the county clerks office this morning to finally transfer dad's car into my name and the truck into my brother's. When I got home, I noticed that she had done them backwards, and I had the car. So, I'll have to go get that straightened out. I called her when I found out so that she wouldn't submit the paperwork to the state until it was correct.
While I was in town, I bought mom some garden seed, cabbage plants, and onion sets for her garden. Since it is supposed to rain tonight and tomorrow and the neighbor tilled her garden up for her over the weekend, I went down and helped her set everything out. We worked 3.5 hours - did take a couple of breaks. She does really good for 86 yo.
We were both tired, so when I got home, I ate a bite and then sat to rest a few minutes. I think I wound up taking a short nap. Anyway, it was over an hour before I got myself up. I thought about running on the treadmill since it was 80°F and I had already been in the sun for 3 hours, but I went outside to see how it felt and thought it wasn't too bad. Of course, I was standing still. LOL The run on the driveway was hot and slow, but I got it done. I was scheduled to run 20 minutes easy pace - goal was to keep my HR under 143 bpm. It crept up to 148 bpm, but not for long. Then 5 minutes at a medium pace - HR between 153 and 163...I actually had 5 minutes in that range with a max HR of 160. Overall pace was 13:27 min/mile. The faster five minutes averaged 11:22 min/mile. Not scorching by any means, but a lot faster than slow. I'll take it.4 -
Hello all! I'm hopelessly behind with what everyone is up to, but I read through comments quickly to try to catch up with you all.
Good to see you @7lenny7.
Congrats on the race @kgirlhart
Just heartbreaking for everyone involved @polskagirl01, the mining accidents and the people displaced and worse by the war in Ukraine. My heart goes out to you all, and bless you for what you are doing to help everyone.
You are doing great @quilteryoyo - paces really improving! And keeping your heart rate pretty controlled.

I flew to Portland on Wednesday (20th) and it was a very long day of travel but things went smoothly for the most part. Portland was only slightly rainy when I arrived, actually ended up being pretty great weather the whole time, with an absolutely gorgeous day on Saturday that I had the opportunity to really get out and enjoy. My conference was all day thursday, friday, and morning on saturday. I was so tired of sitting! I woke up super early on the first day, still on east coast time so I ran on the treadmill in the gym because it was a little cold and rainy. But Friday I ran in the early morning outside along the waterfront and it was so great to be outside and see some new scenery on a run!
Saturday I finished the conference and on the advice of a Portlander, headed to Forest Park within the city which has some amazing trails in the hills overlooking the downtown. I took a trail up to Pittock Mansion which is up on the top of the hills and has amazing views on a clear day - which I was lucky enough to get. The trail I picked was supposed to be 5 miles round trip, about 900 feet elevation gain on the ascent so I decided I would hike up it and run back down. The trail was wide and well maintained (except for one area where a tree with massive roots had fallen and torn out a chunk of the trail), pretty easy going but a bit muddy in places. I hiked up in a little over an hour for the 2.5 miles up. And the mansion was pretty cool (I didn't tour but you can, and it's supposedly haunted), but when you walk around the back to the grounds where suddenly you can see a breathtaking view of Mt. Hood over downtown Portland. And also Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Rainier in the distance. Some pics:The mansion
Mt. Hood and downtown Portland
Mt. St. Helens to the right of the tree and Rainier in the far distance to the left
The beautiful and amazingly green trail
I spent a while up there just amazed at the view and then decided to head down. I ran what I could but a few spots were very slippery with mud so had to slow it way down. The switchbacks were kind of fun to run once it dried up a little further down. I added a bit near the top going down this closed highway and bridge to try to get another good view but darn those trees! I also wanted to get closer to 3 miles for the run so was happy to detour a little. Well, as it came to pass I ended up running 5, so that was well past my goal. I very confidently choose the wrong trail at an intersection - I didn't even check AllTrails on my phone because I was so sure. But after some time of running I thought this is really going UP a lot more than it's supposed to, and I don't remember all these switchbacks at this part. Finally I checked and I was WAY off, I had essentially gone parallel to the intended trail and then up instead of down for about a mile. Whoops. I backtracked, and there was no shortcut so I had to go all the way back to the site of my error, which was right at this thing called the Witch's Castle, which is also supposedly haunted and a very popular teenage party hangout in the past
Back on the right trail, I finished up a pretty flat final just over 1/2 mile (which tells you how much I was not paying attention) and was exhausted but happy to finish a longer than expected and with more ascent than planned trail run. I called for a Lyft driver and happily went back to my hotel and then out for an awesome dinner.
I left Portland on Sunday and was supposed to get back home late that night. But alas, weather over Dallas caused me to miss my connection and I had to stay overnight and take a 5 am flight with an extra connection today. And my bag still hasn't arrived. So overall the trip was mixed but this hike/run was a real highlight on a picture perfect day.
I did manage a 30 minute run outside this afternoon before my strength training class and it felt HOT at 70 some degrees. We're getting a storm soon so it will likely cool down a lot.

Thanks, @shanaber! I'm signed up but it appears to only import the past two months from Strava. I'll manually add older activities as I have time.
@polskagirl01 you're daughter is so sweet!

Whoa! That's some serious drive! I'd like to blame the small drives here to city living, but those in villages aren't bigger really.
No running today I think. Manager wanted me to come into the office. So I guess my rest starts a bit later than usual. And I'll be HUNGRY!3 -

Still waiting for my Garmin to be replaced so I had to use Strava app on this morning’s run. Strava only gave me 4.78 miles. I run this route all the time and I know that it usually measures between 5.11 and 5.15 miles plus I head my friend’s watch beep when we hit 5 miles so I’m counting it as 5.10 – take that Strava!
@quilteryoyo – I love planting gardens. Mom was just talking over the weekend how much the price of seed potatoes had increased. Did you notice a big difference in what you purchased? Sorry about the mix up with the car titles.
@katharmonic – love your pictures from your Portland adventures! I’ve only been to Portland once for a conference. It was shortly after I began running and I wasn’t nearly as adventurous as I am now. I remember trying to run from my hotel one day and at every intersection I would have to stop and wait for traffic before I could cross the street. I did take an extra day and took a tourist bus out to Multnomah Falls, the vista House, Booneville Dam fish ladder, and a few other spots. It was a nice tour.

@katharmonic Love the pictures from your Portland hike/run. Sounds like a really great day and worth taking the wrong trail. I'm really going to have to do better about running when I travel, if I ever do again.
@yirara Sorry you had to go into the office. I heard on the news today that those who were working from home and now going into the office are spending on average $33 more a day, just to go to work. That seems steep to me - esp. where I live, but can see that if you have a long commute, buy coffee, and eat out. Crazy and doesn't really seem worth it.
@Teresa502 Yes! All of the seeds/plants are so much more expensive than in the past! She quit growing potatoes a few years ago because she said it's cheaper to just buy them from the store. We used to plant a lot and had bushels and bushels when I was growing up. She still does sweet potatoes.1 -
It looks like the Run the World 2022 challenge won't even let me manually enter anything older than two months ago. We're right on pace now though. I had a bunch of double entries because I first tried syncing with Garmin, then Strava. The challenge site caught the double entries but I went in and deleted the extras anyway.
@quilteryoyo I love your consistency. I aspire to be that consistent. And your driveway is beautiful. I can see why you run laps on it. How frustrating about the vehicle mixup!
Hey @katharmonic , good to see you too! Your beautiful photos really make me miss running in Oregon. Three years ago I attempted the Tillamook Burn 50M and only made it 34M but it was 34 of the most beautiful miles I've run. I never did get to run in town though.
5 -
@katharmonic Beautiful pictures. That is an area of the country I haven't visited much and would love to get there for a longer period of time.
@quilteryoyo My parents always had a garden and I have gotten spoiled to homegrown produce. Their sweet potatoes are the BEST! So much better than store bought. I will miss that so much when they go full-time RVing.3 -

Per day?!? Wow! Nah, people tend to have smaller cars here that don't use a lot of petrol, my ride is 30 minutes. And people don't buy food or coffee or those kind of things at work here. Most people just bring their lunch, really. For me, it's mostly getting up earlier and coming home later compared to working from home. Negotiated 1-2 office days per week with my manager. Once covid numbers go down again anyway.4 -
Thanks @7lenny7 . I am just now getting back to being consistent. While you were AWOL I had back issues that kept me from running much, and then my heart started acting weird. Turned out I have scoliosis, which I never knew before but have probably had most of my life, and the heart was having a lot of premature ventricle and aortic contractions. I started taking magnesium oxide for my heart and it has really made a huge difference. I started a 10K plan that I am determined to follow to the best of my ability. This is week three and I am doing great so far. I am also still streaking with at least one mile walk a day. Keeps me from being a couch potato on days I'm in a mood or lazy. The driveway is a godsend when it is hot out in the summer. Even though it is mostly hills, it is at least shady. Thanks for joining Run The World. You have us back on track.
@martaindale Home grown sweet potatoes are a lot better than "store bought." So are tomatoes! I hate it when I have to buy a tomato from the grocery store. The only ones that taste decent are the vine ripened ones that are still on a piece of the vine.
@yirara I thought that sounded really steep too. I'm sure it was for those places with higher cost of living and they were probably throwing in new work clothes, etc that not everyone would get.1 -

I ran on the treadmill after work today. The plan called for a 25 minute foundation run, so goal was to keep my HR under 143 bpm for the entire run. It went up to 144 for one second. I'll call that a win. Today, I ran 4/1 minutes at xxx/4.2 mph....the xxx was a ladder from 4.5 - 4.7 - 4.5 mph. No walking today. It turned out to be fairly easy. It's harder for me to do that on the hills outside.3 -
6 miles this evening. Needed some PT, so a slow treadmill run was what the doctor ordered
