May totals: 24.5/100 miles
5/2: 3.2 miles
5/3: 6.6 miles
5/4: 3.2 miles
5/5: 3 miles
5/7: 5.4 miles
5/9: 3.1 miles
Recovery miles in the dark this morning. Kept the pace nice and easy and found a couple sprinklers along the way. Even if I don't need them on the super early runs, they still feel nice!5 -
Didn't get home from work until 6, so got out for a driveway run around 6:20. I walked a total of 0.65 miles for warm up and cool down at an average pace of 3.8 mph. Today's plan called for Fast Finish 3...5 min Zone 1, 20 min Zone 2, 10 min Zone 3. I was slow but my HR was pretty much spot on for the zones...if I let Zone 1 go up to 153 instead of 143. My "fast" 10 minutes averaged 12:37 min/mile. My slow first mile was 13:44 min/mile and the next slow .81 miles was 13:59 min/mile. So, I was over a minute faster than my slow run, so I guess that part is good anyway. Then I ran another 5:46 min slowly (14:29 min/mile pace per Garmin...I don't think it was that slow.) To run a total of 3.00 miles. If you add the run and walk you get 3.65 miles because..................today I REACHED MY GOAL OF AN ENTIRE YEAR WALKING/RUNNING AT LEAST ONE MILE A DAY! Last year on this day I had to break the streak I had stated on Jan 12, the day after I got home from my heart surgery, due to having the stomach flu. Now to decide if I want to keep it up or not.
Sounds like you had a really nice run this morning @martaindale .10 -
May Goal: 100 Miles
5/1: 12.03 miles
5/2: 2.02 miles
5/3: 5.05 miles
5/4: 5.51 miles
5/5: 5.16 miles
5/6: 1.51 miles
5/7: 1.06 miles
5/8: 8.06 miles
5/9: 2.03 miles
42.43/100 miles completed for May
I ran 2 miles this morning for my streak. It was an uneventful run, just hot and humid and that was during the coolest time of the day.

Woohoo @quilteryoyo! 👏🎉 Congrats on your 1 year streak! That is a HUGE accomplishment!2
-
5 miles on the treadmill this morning. Just didn't feel like dealing with the heat and humidity.
3 -
@quilteryoyo amazing streak, congratulations! Such an inspiration.
So after insisting on coming with me on Sunday, the OH is hobbling about with sore legs and a foot he swears he has damaged. There's a lot of muttering about running being bad for you and why on earth did he do it. Deja vu at it's best *rolls eyes*
After the talk about Garmeen's suggestions the other day, and having laughed this morning when she suggested 15 second sprints at fallen out of an airplane pace, I decided to look at the training plans out of curiosity. I picked the HM one by the woman (Amy?) simply because she was the one I hadn't heard of before. I won't be doing what she tells me if it goes against my own plan, but thought it would be interesting to see what it comes up with. Today was a very impressive 2 min warm up, 5 minutes 'hard', 2 min cool down, so I ran/walked 5k first and then did that. For tomorrow she seems to be prescribing 2 min warm up and cool downs and 4 miles at around a minute per km slower than those 5 minutes today. My own plan only calls for 3 easy miles tomorrow, will see what I feel like when the time comes.
I'm running late morning this month on purpose to prepare for a 2.5 hour or so race starting 10am on May 29th. The heat is going to suck, so best get used to it. No sprinklers on at that time of day though. Then again there are no sprinklers in the mountains. There is a river, praying there will still be some water in it to dip my cap in 😂6 -
Thanks @Scott6255 ! Probably smart to choose the treadmill over heat and humidity.
Thanks @eleanorhawkins ! I hope DH changes his mind.....and, of course you are going to be sore if you haven't done much and then exercise. It's part of it. I'll be interested to see how the Garmin coach goes. I had thought about it, but haven't yet. I guess yesterday's "run" was just to see where you were. I guess that's smart. I have noticed that sometimes Garmin's suggested workout coincides closely with what I had planned anyway and sometimes it's way too ambitious. Smart to run about the same time of day as the race. Will it be cooler in the mountains?1 -

Not likely, the start/finish is in the village where my mother lives and it tends to be a little hotter up there than down here by the beach. If I'm lucky the humidity will be lower though. My weather app only goes 2 weeks out, but the Sunday beforehand it's promising around 84f at midday. Not much by the standards of our Texas warriors, but still not exactly pleasant when it's still only May!2 -
@Teresa502 @quilteryoyo and @shanaber I had heard about a couple of clothing optional races before but when I searched for a list, I was surprised at just how many showed up. I suppose with a strategically placed running belt...
@quilteryoyo congrats on the streak, that is amazing!!
@shanaber I hope your PT sessions are very productive.
@Scott6255 I still haven't heard back from my daughter about Barcelona. When does she go there?
@polskagirl01 lovely photos! I've never seen a concrete trail through the woods like that. Asphalt, yes, but not concrete. Seems like overkill and it doesn't seem wide enough to accommodate someone in a wheelchair (the usual reason I hear for paving a trail).2 -
Friday was the day to drive to South Dakota to pick my son's stuff from college. He's done with his sophomore year at South Dakota State and didn't enough room in his car so I drove out to pick up his bike, TV and refrigerator. I think I saw him for less than an hour because he was anxious to drive to Fargo to stay with his girlfriend during her last week at North Dakota State. We did have time for an ice cream cone though.
On the way out there I had time to stop for a trail run at state park I'd never been in. It was nice little park and I got 7.5 miles in before realizing I was running later than I wanted. It was much slower slog than I anticipated. I think lack of sleep is kicking my *kitten*. The highlight of the run was discovering a herd of goats! The park hired the goats to eat invasive plant species. Definitely the cutest thing I've come across on a run.
Because runs have really sucked lately, I skipped my Saturday run and slept in until 10am. That felt great!
Sunday was another day back on the trail, this time at my local park and I finished with 14 slow miles. I was hoping to get out in time to run in the rain but only caught the last 15 minutes of sprinkles. It was a beautiful day for running though...mid 50's and overcast.
Between the runs and a few walks I'm right on target or my May goal and my GVRAT goal.

On my run Friday I found a very, very cool app which some of you may be interested in. I was deep in the woods when I heard a very loud, very strange bird sound. It sounded like a crow trying to sound like cat, or may be a cat trying to sound like a crow. Anyway, I tried to find it but could never spot it. Then I started thinking there must be an app out there which would listen to the call I was hearing and tell me what it was. Sure enough, there is!
It's called Merlin Bird ID and it's by Cornell Labs, which is part of Cornell University. The best part is it completely free and there's no ads. It also works worldwide. Works with iOS or Android.
There are two ways to go about identifying birds. You can answer questions about what you see and it will come back with possible bird species, or the feature I love, you can start an audio recording and it will ID the bird, or birds. One caution, it takes a LOT of memory to enable the sound ID feature. I downloaded the pack for US & Canada and took over 1 GB of space on my phone. Smaller areas will take less, but it will still be large.
On Friday I was too late in finding and installing the app to ID the crazy bird I heard, but I did use it to identify several other species I was hearing.
On Sunday I found another use for it. Several times during my run I stopped to ID the bird calls I was hearing. The first time I found it was a Red-Bellied Woodpecker. When it comes back with the bird ID you can get more info on the species and it includes several recording of the bird calls. I started playing with those to compare it to what I heard and an amazing thing happened. Those Red-Bellied Woodpeckers started flying in close, and back and forth over my head. I spent far too much time playing with that feature and the birds, but it was REALLY cool to see these woodpeckers up close.
I did this several times during my run and was also able to call in Pileated, Hairy, and Downy woodpeckers. The Pileated woodpeckers land just 10 meters away from me in a tree. I REALLY wished I had a camera at that point. I may go back out soon and hike with my camera and big lens and hopefully get some good shots.
Anyway, if you're on your run and are interested in identifying the birds you're hearing, check out this app. An absolutely fantastic app (as long as you have the space for it!).

Ha, @7lenny7 those goats are cute! That would have surprised the heck out of me if I ran across them on the trail. Your son sounds a lot like my son with regards to his girlfriend and allotting time for anyone else
And thanks for remembering about my daughter's Spain trip. She leaves the last week in June.1 -
Wooooo!! @quilteryoyo Congrats on completing your streak. Very impressive!1

02.05: 3.20km in 26min 10 stride repeats
04.05: 6.45km in 57mins
06.05: 3.11km in 24min
08.05: 4.00km in 31min
10.05: 3.00km in 22mins
19.8/60km
Woohoo, not long, but fastest run in about 9 months. 2 more weeks and I'll hopefully keep this up for 4 or 5km. Lets see. Tomorrow I'll try to get in a slightly longer run as I'll be away from Friday to Sunday.3 -
@7lenny7 Cute goats! That birding app sounds pretty cool. I always hear crazy bird calls when I go hiking but so rarely can see the bird they are coming from. If I do spot it, I can't tell what it is.0

I suppose I could have waited until after todays run before posting an update to save a post...oh well.
I had planned on 9 miles but ended up doing 11. I had to go to the vet to get some meds for Kody and decided to run there instead of drive. It was a very melancholy run. The meds I was getting for Kody are to help him deal with his laryngeal paralysis better and it occurred to me on the way there that he'll probably never be able to run with me again. With the heat of summer I didn't run him much anyway and it's hard to know how much worse it will be for him by the time it get cold enough again. I've heard it described that with this condition it's like breathing through a straw for him and since panting is a dogs way of cooling off, a restriction in his breathing could be fatal when overheated. Looks like it's slow walks on cool morning for him now.
It was 72F at the start, with a nice dry wind in my face so that was nice, but on the way back it reached 80F and with the wind behind me it had no cooling effect. It was a tough run, but felt good in spite of the heat. With the first hot run of the year comes the realization that I need to start wearing bandaids on my nipples again. Ouch!
I just realized it was my 7 year runiversary yesterday! Not including today's run, Strava has me down for 7116 miles in that time.

Fantastic @quilteryoyo! I know it's super hard to maintain a streak like that and you had some challenges for sure. Great job. Whether you keep it up longer or not it's a great accomplishment.
@7lenny7 I love the goats and would love to see that while running. I have used the Cornell bird ID app a time or two but with less success. I forgot about it and should check it out again. They have such an amazing ornithology lab at Cornell that I've never visited but used to see when I brought my dog to the vet school there.

Plugging along here, the same as last week. Busy, but just trying to get at least 20 minutes in. Maybe it's getting easier? The weather has been gorgeous and I should have no complaints at all right now (but I was a little hot ).

I haven’t been on in a few days. I started feeling bad over the weekend and had a negative Covid test, but when I still felt bad this morning, I got a rapid test, and it was positive. No running for me until I can get rid of this cough. ☹️9

@quilteryoyo - congratulations on hitting your 1 year streak runniversary!
@7lenny7 - I love those goats. Where my daughter was living previously they hired goats to eat the blackberry brambles (also invasive and no berries you could eat). I have heard that they are using them here on the local hillsides for fire abatement too. I think it is a great idea!
I am so sorry about Kody. I worry a lot about Hobbes these days too. He still has lots of energy but struggles with just a bit of heat, even the low 70's and it seems the paved trail is getting too hot at those temps for his paws. I really need to find some shady dirt trails to run with him on. Unfortunately there are not many/any of those in close proximity.
I have used the Merlin app to identify birds I have seen and was excited about the call identification but I haven't figured out how to use that feature. I could only listen to a call when I selected a bird.
Since I run in a bird preserve I am always hearing so many different calls, it will be good to have.
On my run yesterday I was finally able to get a picture of one of the osprey. I saw it multiple times soaring and looking in the ponds and a few times it flew right over us. I pulled out my phone and waited and then just snapped a bunch and cropped them when I got home.
Hard to tell in these pictures but his head and underbelly/wings are mostly white This is one I took a while back - it was hanging out and vocalizing maybe looking for a mate?
I have been running or wunning when I can. PT said there is no restrictions but again if it hurts don't. Yesterday I really wanted to get out because it was just so cool and beautiful out and hot weather is coming later this week. Once we got to the trail I set my interval app to do my 60/40 run/walk intervals and decided to see if I could push the pace a little. I probably overdid it a bit on the first half because I had to dial it back a bit on the way back when my arm started telling me it wasn't happy. I did manage 3/6 miles under 13min pace which is pretty good for me with the walking. Its always easy to just take the walking intervals nice and slow so I tried to do them at a decent pace too.
PT update... Saw him today and got a thumbs up for improvement on range of motion. He made me hurt as expected and gave me a couple of new exercises with a band that are a 'gateway' into strength work, anticipating the range of motion will continue to improve and we can work on strength more specifically. I just want it to stop hurting...
We are heading into some likely strict water rationing soon which means not many sprinklers for us to cool off in either. The one interesting note I read recently is that we have and so little rain this year the fire danger is lower because the grasses haven't been able to grow much - I guess that is one bit of good news in an otherwise scary drought situation.
