@polskagirl01 huge kudos to you for your 5K race AT 10:30PM!!! I am snoring at 100 decibels at that time of night!
Welcome @mmckee1189. Yup, just show up, log those miles, and try to enjoy the progress. That is the fun part of (re)starting to run.
6.2 miles this morning. After almost 10 years of running, this was my first truly easy run. I'm not even calling it a run, or even talking about pace. This was about effort, and doing it at a level for where I am at currently, not at a specific pace or where I think I OUGHT to be. I am an old (almost 60) man, and it's time I take back the word "jog" and not be ashamed of it. At 73F and 80% humidity, I only reached for my water bottle once during the entire 6.2 miles. I didn't feel winded, and my HR stayed between 110 and 115 the whole time. I never looked at my watch, just used it to log mileage. No leg pain either. I've had a revelation.
Yikes, looks like I'm a bit behind on mileage for the month. Need to step it up a little more.7 -
Got out again this morning for a run and Garmin classed it as a tempo run. In reality at the beginning the wind was so strong I cud hardly run against and when it eased a little I was able to go a little faster.
05/05 3.38 miles
06/05 3.20 miles
08/05 3.32 miles
11/05 3.32 miles
12/05 3.32 miles

Well that was exhilarating. I had 6.7 miles last night, the last two or three during a tornado warning with sirens blaring, thunder crashing, wind howling and rain pouring down. The forecast called for the storm to hit at 8pm, so I went out about 6:15pm thinking I'd be fine. I wasn't. Now I love running in storms but I've never run during a tornado warning. It was exciting! As I was running home, with tornado sirens screaming, a young guy pulled over and offered me a ride home. That was really nice of him, but I declined. I only had a mile to go and didn't want to short my plan. After I showered and grabbed a beer and watched the lightning show from our porch.
The run was centered on hill repeats. We have a park nearby situated in a valley. The drive coming out of the park has an 80ft rise over 0.2 miles which is a nice incline for hill repeats. Since this was my first time out here in a while I didn't sprint them but just steadily chugged up, turned around and ran down. After the third time I started feeling a pain on the back of my heel, towards the bottom, as if a tendon was strained. The next two hill repeats I just powered walked in a way to minimize the pain, then on the 6th and final hill climb I went back to chugging up the hill. It feels a little better today, which is thankfully a rest day. I'll take it easy until it's back to normal.

@shanaber and @quilteryoyo you may have to update the Merlin app to get the sound ID feature. My sister had that issue. When you open the app you should see this: Then click on the Sound ID to get this Then click the microphone and it will start recording and look something like this: The osprey is very cool and those are amazing bird photos for a phone.
@quilteryoyo I never did figure out what the bird was. If I could find the sound file on my phone I'd see if I could send it Cornell bird labs and see if they can tell me. A bob cat...that would have been pretty cool, and a bit anxious, to see. Maybe that's why it kind of sounded like a cat too. I love the idea that you and your mom took care of all those trees. Way to get out there and get it done! Regarding StoryWorth, my wife bought that for her dad and it was a huge hit. I think it's a fantastic idea, as long as your mom is someone who will put time and effort into the responses. If they're all short answers you may be disappointed. Thankfully my father-in-law loves to talk and tell stories so his book is jam-packed. My wife did have to help him out with it, particularly with adding photos. He loved it so much his brother's kids got it for him too. My FIL is done with the book but I haven't seen the finished printed book. I'll try to remember to ask my wife about it and tell you how it looks
@polskagirl01 have a great time on your 24 hour run! So this is a solo effort rather than a group effort? Glad you enjoyed your 5K!
@marisap2010 recover soon!
@eleanorhawkins that peeing weirdo sounds disgusting. Sorry you had that happen.
@martaindale I have a couple of pairs of Goodr and I love them for running. Very light, they don't fog up, they don't slip, and reasonably priced. I wish them made them in a wrap-around style though. I like to keep the sun out from the side as well. I'll have to check out that Roka challenge on Strava though. I'm looking for a better quality pair of sunglasses for sailing but one that won't cost a fortune.
@kgirlhart the thought of a donkey living in a house is pretty funny. I'd try to run past that house often.
@mmckee1189 welcome! I disagree, I think you're mileage WILL be impressive. You haven't been running in a long time, you're raising tiny minions, bronchitis, gardening...Bravo!! Don't let anyone else's mileage overshadow your awesome accomplishments! You'll find nothing but support here.
@Scott6255 congrats on the great run! I had no idea you were that old. I thought I was older than you (I'm 55).3 -
I have Tifosi sunglasses. I tried Goodr and didn't care for them. I think they are fun but they really didn't give me the coverage I wanted. I used to have Smith glasses for narrow faces and when I finally after years needed to replace them they no longer had ones that fit well on my face. REI recommended the Tifosi and my husband got them for me for Christmas one year. When I fell last February the bottom edge of the lens is what cut into my cheekbone when my sunglasses and chin/mouth hit the sidewalk (I am still trying to figure that out!). They got scratched a bit on the lens but didn't shatter or break. I would definitely recommend them too but they are pricey too but I tend to keep/wear them for many years so worth it for me.
@shanaber those Tifosi sunglasses look reasonably priced and they have the type of style I'm looking for for sailing. Thanks for the tip!

I love those days when you feel so good that you just keep running @kgirlhart . Great run. Yeah for Sunny, a fox, and a sprinkler.
Thanks @shanaber . I'm glad StoryWorth is worth it. I know I will have to help mom. When I told her about it she started writing down things she could remember. She's going to write them out and I'll type them in and do all the scanning of pictures, etc. She doesn't own a computer. I did get some of my dad's stories on audio about 5 years before he passed. He was supposed to do more, but never did. Still, we have a little over an hour of the recording. I had it put on CDs this past year and gave them as gifts to family and close friends.
@yirara Now that I read it again, I remember you saying that it was something you were born with. Does it have a trigger, or do you just have that happen randomly?
@polskagirl01 Sounds like you had a great time. Sorry it was short though.
Welcome @mmckee1189 . Sounds like you have reasonable goals and for the right reasons. How much did you run pre kids? I haven't heard of the plan you are using, but the guy must be good with a last name like that (hint: It's my last name too. ) I love to read too, but that has fallen through the cracks for me. I'm impressed that you have read that many books. (Well, I have probably read more, but they are the same ones over and over again and they have about 10 pages and 30 words each. I work at a daycare and they love to hear the same thing over and over again. LOL)
@martaindale Sounds like you had a decent run, until your fall. I'm glad you weren't hurt worse and hope nothing pops up later.
@Scott6255 Glad you had a truly easy run today. I still prefer the term run over jog if both feet are off the ground. Remember, only joggers find the dead bodies.
Wow @7lenny7 ! That's some storm. I'm glad you made it home and it was very nice of the young man to offer you a ride. Thanks for the info on Merlin and Story Worth.
Got up early enough this morning to go out for my scheduled run before 8:30 on the driveway. I did hill repeats today - 5 min Zone 1, 5 min Zone 2, 6x(30 sec Zone 5 uphill/90 sec Zone 1), 5 min Zone 1. Overall, it was slow. I expected it to be. But, I was a bit disappointed to see that my uphill sprints were only around 11:30 min/mile. I felt like I was flying and was giving it all I had. Best pace was 9:59 min/mile. I ran 2.00 miles in 28:00 minutes exactly. I also walked a total of 0.70 miles for warm up and cool down.
I came in and cooled a few minutes, ate breakfast, and went down to pick up mom so we could go out and get the rest of the cedars (and other trees) out of my hay field. I was out of the house for 2.5 hours, but Garmin says I "worked" 1:07:43 minutes. (I turned it off when I drove the Gator and took a break, but once forgot to turn it back on for a few minutes. I felt like I worked longer. LOL)
I dropped mom off at her house around 12:30 and came home. We ate a little for lunch, I went back and picked her up and went to a local nursery to buy plants she wanted to put in the garden. We came home and I helped her plant the seedlings that were big enough - bell peppers, tomatoes, and sweet potatoes. That took us almost 25 minutes. When we were done, I was beat. I don't think I ate enough lunch or didn't drink enough water, or something. I was shaky and weak. I came home and ate an entire foot long subway sandwich that I had bought while we were out and about. Not the healthiest, but I sure felt a lot better after that. I really needed to mow my lawn, but that will have to wait for another day.

@mmckee1189 welcome, atta girl!
@polskagirl01 nice race, annoying distance
@martaindale hope nothing was injured
@7lenny7 tornado, yikes!
Probably missed plenty but I'm doing 6 things at once again.
With my Saturday Krav Maga classes and lots of weekends away I'm having to juggle to get my runs in. I decided to get this weeks long(ish) run in this morning and that some elevation would be useful so planned to run up to the mountain village. Always seems a great idea beforehand and a horrible idea about half way up. It was hot, and hard.
The village, Mijas, known for its donkeys, is fun when you run through groups of tourists looking like a tomato and smelling like a swamp monster :-)
Garmeen II immediately moved me from 'maintenance' to 'unproductive'. *kitten*. She says I do too much high intensity aerobic stuff and then tells me I should do more low intensity AND more hard anaerobic work. Ummmmmmm .....
No class tomorrow so heading out for the weekend to Tarifa (southernmost point in Europe). Surfers' paradise and I suspect getting my legs in the Atlantic will be good for them, if bracing 🤣

@Scott6255 I'm happy to see you had a revelation! I really hope this will help with your injury prevention and keep you running for many years to come. This last year I slowed waaaay down on my easy runs. Like a minute to a minute and a half a mile. It has helped so much with recovery. Your "jog" is basically my easy pace now. It felt really slow when I started doing it but now is much more natural and pleasant.2

I took a rest day yesterday instead of climbing as my ankle was a little sore just walking around. Did some ice and aleve and it was fine this morning. So, no harm done.
Easy miles this morning. With temps slightly cooler (68F) I went out a little faster than intended but reigned it in to keep it easy ahead of my long run tomorrow. It's amazing that a 5-8 degree temp drop takes it from sweaty and gross to kinda nice!4 -
I fell behind on reading and posting this week but have finally caught up with the reading. I gave lots of likes and hugs as appropriate! I did not run a single step last weekend. On Saturday the weather was stormy so I "cross trained" by painting a bedroom, cleaning carpets, painting a couple pieces of furniture and cleaning out and organizing. After work Monday I ran 4 miles on a local trail. I'm not used to running in the evenings and it was in the 80s so it was a struggle. Tuesday after work I volunteered with our track club registering runners for a one mile series and then ran the mile. Wednesday was a rest day. Yesterday I ran 5.5 miles before work and this morning I got in 5 miles before work. That brings me to 38.9 miles for the month. Planning to hike on the AT tomorrow.
Good luck to @polskagirl01 and anyone else racing this weekend!5 -
@Teresa502 Can't wait to see pics from your AT hike! As a morning runner, I find it so much harder to run after work too. Morning runs just feel easier on the body.3

14 miles this morning. Tried out my new super powers on my long run today. Gotta say, it felt pretty nice. Tried to keep HR below 120, and it only spiked up a few times for a second or two. Averaged 118. The plan is for the next 3-4 months is to keep HR below 120 and see how pace trends. Theoretically it should start creeping up.

I have gotten behind on the thread again, but I have been running. And I have read through and liked and hugged as appropriate. Thursday I had an 8:00 meeting at work so I needed to be a little early. I actually got up well and got going. I ran 5.5 miles. It was an uneventful, but nice run. It had been really hot here and the lows have been in the 70's, one day we only got down to 80, but my runs have been ok. I have just kind of then them slow and easy.
Yesterday I ran 2 miles for the streak and this morning just a quick 1 mile run. We had a big hail storm yesterday evening so it was kind of depressing seeing all the leaves on the ground. Both of our vehicles got pounded. My windshield is ok, but my husband's windshield has a crack and so does my neighbor. My sister was on her way home when it hit and her windshield was destroyed. Our garden and all of my flowers were ruined. Well, I did have some strawberries and one pot of tomatoes and a hibiscus on the porch and they are ok, but everything else is decimated. I'll have to get someone out to check out the roof too. 😕
Large hail
My roses yesterday and today

@polskagirl01 Great job on your race!
@7lenny7 I’m glad you were able to make it back without encountering a tornado.
Re: sunglasses - I have a pair of Tifosi that were swag from my last marathon, and I really love them.
I am feeling a lot better except for residual cough. I went for a short walk earlier- my first venture out all week. I don’t want to try to run while still coughing, but maybe in a couple of days.8 -
-
@marisap2010 yay, glad you are feeling better!0

Yikes @kgirlhart that is some big hail and so sad about all the damage!
@Scott6255 - it sounds like your new method is working well for you! I hope I can find that sweet spot too one of these days!
We are really hot and dry today. It was hot yesterday when I went out for my run and today is worse. I chose not to run and will get out tomorrow morning instead. It is supposed to be about 10-20 degrees cooler.4 -
@kgirlhart That hail is huge!! Your poor plants. I hope your roof is ok.
@Scott6255 Glad to see your new method is working for you!1 -

Hot and sweaty 10 miles this morning. Actually managed a decent pace without sending my HR through the roof, 11:00 average. I also wasn't totally wiped out afterwards despite the heat so I think that's a good sign that I wasn't pushing too hard.
Do any of you ever get nauseated when you are too hungry? Like, if I don't eat right when I feel hunger pains, it moves past hunger to nausea. Then nothing sounds good but I know I need to eat to fix it. That happened today. I got back from my run and ate something very small, stretched, went to shower, got distracted and next thing I know it's been an hour. Then, nothing really sounds good and I just had to force something down. And quite a bit of it since I just ran 10 miles. Ultimately I ended up eating fries because they are my upset stomach go-to. Fries fix everything.6
