I ran a 5K this morning and then walked my dogs another half mile. My marathon training plan starts tomorrow. My long run next weekend is 8 miles, which is a little stressful considering my fatigue, but I’m hoping in another week I’ll feel a lot better.3

@shanaber Super cool shots! I am also glad you didn’t get more seriously injured with your fall. It’s too soon for another injury!!marisap2010 wrote: »My long run next weekend is 8 miles, which is a little stressful considering my fatigue, but I’m hoping in another week I’ll feel a lot better.
I hope so too. But if you don’t, make some adjustments to your plan for a few weeks and don’t push too hard.In the long run, you’ll likely do more harm than good by trying to complete exercise your body isn’t ready for yet. It will get there though. When my parents got covid they had intermittent fatigue for a few months. So fingers crossed for next week feeling good and I hope you just continue to get better.

Looks like I will be close but not quite with my goal this month. My plan calls for another short one tomorrow.
I went out to the nature preserve this morning. It is beautiful out there! The pace was super slow on my watch and I was going pretty slow, but I also kept stopping to look at things and take pictures. Strava told me it was a low effort run! I guess it was with all the stops but still. Geesh strava!
The main trail is only 1.5 miles and ends at a swimming spot on a river that feeds into canyon lake. I went out a short single track side trail for a bit that seems to run behind some properties at the edge of the preserve. Didn’t get to the end of it, so that’s on the list for another day. There was also a trail off the end of the parking area that heads out into this valley that I will need to explore further. I am hopeful that I could string together 5 miles or so of trails to run once I put all those side trails into the mix. We’ll see. Maybe I’ll get lucky and one will be even longer.

@martaindale nice pics! Discovering new trails always rocks. I thought of you during my race this morning... it was so hot, the fire brigade took a hose down to a bridge we had to cross over the river and tied it to one side, effectively creating a giant sprinkler for us to run through, which was heaven!
Short report... it was hot, it was tough, there were bottlenecks on technical single tracks, tricky bits and a *kitten* hill! I finished in 2h20, cut off was 2h30 and only 313 of the 434 runners made it in time so I'm happy enough to have been number 280. Legs don't like me much right now 😂
Is it bedtime yet?9 -
Hi All - I am way, way behind. Have been running and will post a run update later.
I get a newsletter from the SF Marathon and there was an article that I thought you all would enjoy. Ultra runner Mike Wardian is running across the US. He started on May 1st in San Francisco and expects it to take a bit over 2 months to complete. You can follow his progress on Facebook and Strava. Don't know if his route will come near any of us but you can sign up to run with him if he is close to where you are...
Article is here
ETA - did you happen to see the Emily Sisson broke the American HM record at the USATF Championships? She finished in 1:07:11!! I can't even imagine being able to run a HM that fast!
that's like a 5 min per mile pace?!!!! OMG!!!!2 -
@martaindale I will definitely take it easy and cut back, if needed.
Also, beautiful pictures!
@eleanorhawkins Great job on your race!2 -

I got out for 7 miles this morning. It was already pretty warm at 80°F at the start and 85° F at the end. I didn't run as long as I usually do on Sundays since my daughter was still here. I ran out to see Sunny the Donkey and then ran by the cemetery to make sure that my veterans had flags placed on their graves. I got home after 5 miles, but everyone was still asleep so I ran up to the park for another 2 miles and I saw my sister and brother in law walking there.
I'm really glad tomorrow is a holiday. I will probably sleep in a bit and just get a mile or two for the streak. I had a great weekend, but it's always kind of tiring having a "company".
Glad you weren't injured @shanaber. I love the pictures. I have never seen a bald eagle.
@marisap2010 It took me a while to get my stamina back after having covid. Just be kind to yourself and rest if you need to.
Beautiful trails @Martindale
@Eleanorhawkins Congratulations on your race!

@martaindale - That looks like a great place for a dip on a hot day! Cool off and run home 😁
@marisap2010 - I hope you get your stamina back quickly, just take it easy and build back into it.
I am feeling fine today. No lasting issue from the fall. I did spend the day on my feet cooking and cleaning for tomorrow but I am hoping to get in a short run of some kind tomorrow. We are puppy sitting one of Hobbes' agility buddies and Jeep is arriving early in the morning. Dh will be smoking ribs starting early so my plan is to leave the pups with him and get out by myself for a run before family arrives.4 -
@marisap2010 Nice job on the 5K. If you can't do 8 miles next weekend, don't sweat it. Do what you and your body can do and build from there. Like @martaindale said, I hope you don't, but you could have intermittent fatigue for a while. If you do, listen to your body. Maybe take more walk breaks or cut it short. Hope none of this is the case and you'll be back to your old self soon.
@martaindale Nice run and pictures. If that last one is part of the trail, those rocks look like they would be hard to run on. You are doing great and love that you found such a pretty new trail to explore.
@eleanorhawkins Great job on getting in 10 min before cutoff in what sounds like a really tough race! You rock!
Sounds like a really nice run @kgirlhart . I agree that having company is hard, even if you are elated to have them there and spend time with them. It just throws your whole schedule off, which I don't do well with. LOL
Sounds like a great plan for your day today @shanaber! Enjoy those ribs.2 -
Glad you are feeling better @shanaber!
@marisap2010 great job getting out there! Take it slow and you will get your strength back.
@eleanorhawkins big kudos on your race. You had plenty of cushion before the sweeper got to you!
@kgirlhart glad you got to see Sunny the Donkey and keep up your streak! That's awesome!
8 miles this morning. Was out with family/friends last night and had too many (two) beers and Mexican food. Stayed up later than I wanted, and thus bought a ticket on the struggle bus this morning. But it was a holiday so I didn't worry about getting back late and took it very slow in the beginning. Started feeling better about mile 6, then suddenly I was done. That does it for May.

Thanks everyone!
@marisap2010 I agree with everyone else, better to be conservative and do what you feel ok with than push yourself and hinder your recovery!
@Scott6255 your reference to the sweeper made me laugh. No idea if this is a thing anywhere else in the world, or even in road races, but in Spanish trail races the sweeper literally carries an old-fashioned broom! My Mum went and stood on a corner to see me pass (first time ever anyone has done that, my husband usually comes down to the finish line but has never waited on a route, and it was awesome to see her!) but when she arrived she wasn't sure whether everyone had already passed and she'd missed me. I wish I'd been there to see her face when he explained that there were still people to come by and that it wasn't over until the guy with a broom came by LOL.

@quilteryoyo The picture with all the rocks is a wet weather creek that the trail crosses. I like hiking those but definitely would hurt myself trying to run it!
@eleanorhawkins I now want a giant firehouse sprinkler on all my runs. That sounds fantastic! Great job on your race. Those conditions sound super tough. You should 100% be proud of how you did!
@Scott6255 Yeah, remember when 2 beers wasn’t going to mean you were struggling the next day? I used to love experimenting with cocktails and have a beautifully stocked liquor cabinet that I rarely touch anymore because I just can’t drink if I’m running the next day. It’s noticeable. So, I basically don’t drink anymore unless I’m on vacation.
@kgirlhart I love the idea of having company and entertaining and people are fun to have around for a couple of days. By day 3, my introverted nature is screaming for some time alone and people out of my space.4 -

Wow, so close but not quite. I drove to the flattest road in my neighborhood for my run today. It’s about 2 miles long and has only a couple of very gentle rolling hills. My legs were really tired this morning and I struggled to get out of bed. I needed a real recovery run without the effort of a trail or hills. It was a nice break. And tomorrow is a rest day so I am sleeping in!!
I rarely see other runners out here, but on that flat road I saw 2! And a guy riding a horse. And my first fox!! It didn’t run off right away but watched me for a bit so I actually got a decent look at it. Super cool. It made me think of @kgirlhart and all of her foxes.5 -
My plan called for a 40 minute "foundation run" today, meaning all in HR Zones 1 and 2. After that, I took my dogs for a short walk. I felt good on the run and could have kept going, but I didn't push it.
I'm also trying to be more conscious of food moving forward as I get into marathon mode. I haven't been eating as well as I should, so I am meal prepping for the week and currently have a pot of turkey vegetable soup on the stove and a palmini lasagna (uses hearts of palm instead of traditional noodles) in the oven.6 -
Question for everyone: have any of you had the soles on your running shoes replaced rather than replacing the whole shoe?
There's a cobbler's in the city half an hour away that specialises in re-soling running shoes and will put new Vibram soles on my weirdly worn pair for a third of what a new pair of the same shoe would cost me. I'm trying to decide whether it's worth it to see what happens. Maybe I'll break out the new pair and see how they wear, then if the same thing doesn't happen to them then give it a go. Any thoughts?
Incidentally, I did end up racing in them yesterday, it was ok for the most part but a bit slippery on some of the more complicated descents, which has left me with a sore backside! Never had aching glutes after a race before, I guess I was braking with my *kitten* because I wasn't sure the shoes would keep me upright.4 -
@eleanorhawkins I have never heard of resoling running shoes!2
-
Nope me neither @eleanorhawkins. But I suppose it's possible with the right tools and glue ¯\_(ツ)_/¯1

Since it will soon be June 1 for the folks on the other side of the world, I started the June thread.

I ran 3.5 miles this morning. I slept in a little, so it was pretty warm. There was some cloud cover which helped. It was windy too, but it was hard to tell if the 23 mph winds were a help or a hindrance.
Thanks for getting us set up for June @scott6255.

Way to get it done when you weren't feeling it @Scott6255 ! I think I had a ticket on the same bus today. Thanks for setting up the June Thread!
@eleanorhawkins That's funny. I've never seen anyone carry a broom, but then I've never participated in any big races either. Awesome that your mom was on the route to cheer you on! I have never had any shoes resoled. Is it just the sole? I forgot how long you said you had them. It might be worth it if the cushioning is still okay.
Great recovery run @martaindale . Foxes are so cool. Enjoy sleeping in tomorrow.
@marisap2010 I enjoy the easy Foundation Runs. Your food prep sounds delicious. I need to do better with that too.
Great mileage this month @kgirlhart !
Went out early (9:30 am) for a Speed Play run on the driveway. It wasn't much fun today. Temp was only 66°F, but I was sweating (Garmin said humidity was 69%. I don't believe it. Felt like 100%. LOL) Anyway, I ran 10 min easy, 4x(2 min Zone4/2 min recovery - I walked), 5 min easy. My Zone 4 runs were around 11:00 min/mile pace, but because I walked the recovery and the rest was easy the overall pace for the 32:10 min 2.30 mile run was 13:59 min/mile. I also walked a total of 0.70 miles for warm up and cool down.
After resting a few minutes and eating a second breakfast, mom and I trimmed trees along the driveway. Garmin time was 52:11 minutes. Mom held the limbs down so I could cut them short enough with the loppers. It aggravated my tennis elbow and I was feeling overheated, so we quit after the second Gator full was unloaded. We were outside a little over 2 hours though doing that. After I took a shower, I was a full pound lighter than I was this morning and that was with wet hair and after having eaten a bowl of oatmeal, an egg with cheese and a piece of toast, 3 big cups of coffee, and 16 ounces of water. That should tell you how much I sweated!
I plan on an easy 30 min run tomorrow, so will post my total mileage afterwards. I'm going to be short of my goal, but life happens.7
