…and This is Why People Have Unrealistic Weight Loss Expectations

I see so many people here with totally unrealistic expectations, but, my heavens, when you’ve got newsfeeds, magazines, and social media throwing garbage like this out, is it any wonder?

We jump all over posters here for using the word "toning" but I see it all the time on the cover headlines of fitness magazines and I cringe. Yes, women's fitness magazines, I don't think they'd reel in too many male readers with blurbs like "6 exercises to tone your abs" or "Effective toning in just 15 minutes a day".
I sometimes like to buy one of the better quality fitness mags but I'll bypass any that talk about toning.5 -
Facebook sent a lovely one my way. A guy in a video saying that cardio doesn't work for weight loss because it burns carbs, which are then replenished by eating, and then turned to fat.
As if that wasn't bad enough, the solution he offered was possibly worse: 'take my quiz to find out which of these three body types you are, to find out what to do to lose weight'

When I first joined MFP I picked a weekly weight loss goal of 2# per week, which I thought was easily doable after watching The Biggest Loser contestants drop pounds in the double digits week after week. Well, that goal didn't make it past lunch of my first day13

Sounds like V-Shred? I get that one on YT from time to time...

The ones that absolutely gross me out are the ads with the boiled banana slices. 🤢

I’m noticing the k’chava ads are also getting pretty desperate for attention. Several shirtless older grey headed body competition type man-wonders mixing their k’chava up or posing in front of a surfboard. I’ve spent zero time curious about the product because I’m so wrapped up in “are they photoshopped?”4

Sugar. Huh. So what's with the "Keto" in gray below the text?0 -

If you do a Google image search this screen shot is from a "Brown Sugar Substitute Recipe (sugar-free, low carb)".

I have no idea what the *most* ridiculous tip is I have ever had, but "eat when you are hungry until you feel full and satiated" is certainly among my favoured ones. Hunger is what drove me to overeat in the first place. Just because I eliminated the associated stomach pains, nausea and vomiting is not changing that. I have learned to formulate meals that keep hunger at tolerable levels and because of that, I am able to lose and keep it off, while fully realising that the hunger is there to stay until I snuff it.8

Maybe it’s like “haint blue” porch ceilings in the South. Scares the ghosts of bad calories away.3 -

My kitchen IS blue. Blue is supposed to be a calming colour and I wanted all the help I could get since I'm not a morning person and I'm hanging out in the kitchen.1 -

It’s the URL link to get info on this wonder plan. Don’t ask. I don’t know either and I’m sure not clicking.0 -
So I scroll up on this very page and see an ad for "XL to M in two weeks challenge" from some outfit called Unimeal. Yeah, not happening. The only thing that's going to downsize that much in two weeks is your wallet.5

Lose weight without diet or exercise!
(I'm always wondering: okay, so what does that leave, exactly, for a plan? )5 -
An odd one that might actually work was from Paul Harvey ( good day!) anyone remember him? Well, it was "The Naked Diet". You eat every meal in front of a full length mirror, naked and if that doesn't make you lose your appetite, nothing will! Lol!17

^^^^ um, what happens in your lunch break at work or if you go out to dinner???10

There was an ad on my local radio station advertising an exercise class that makes you burn 5000 calories in 30 minutes.3

This lady looks so darned happy at the prospect of having her fat vacuumed out.4 -
Even the less-awful sources' marketing is pretty eye-roll-y . . . another click-bait race to the bottom, I guess.

And the artful placement of a small array of succulents just makes the whole experience look so darned spa-like.3 -

I’m sure they allow succulents in operating rooms, right?
Just like I was looking at the guys working out in scrubs this morning (my gym is affiliated with and physically attached to a major metro hospital/trauma center).
I was wondering which was grosser: hospital personnel working out in scrubs after a shift, or working out in scrubs in a gym before a shift?
Either way, you know there was no change in scrubs involved. 🤢
MERSA, anyone?4 -
FWIW, I posted a similar thread over in Debate a couple of years ago, with this as the lead illustration; I think it's worth sharing here for the eye-roll factor:
From my supermarket check-out area, as is probably obvious.
There are a number of things about that magazine cover that are pretty hilarious to me, not least the inevitable juxtaposition of treats and weight-loss diets.2 -
All fitness magazines have "lose fat" or "waist reduction" ads on the front cover. Classic bait and switch just to get you to buy the magazine. And more and more articles are disingenuous at the truth.
