LESS Alcohol ~ OCTOBER 2023 ~ One Day at A Time

Followed through on getting to the Total Body workout at my gym yesterday. Honestly, I haven’t raised my heart rate that high in at least a few years and pushed hard on the raised step and ‘interval’ sessions; including seven 40-30-20 second planks and running basketball hoop moves, and more, lol. I’m pretty sure I was laughing (inside) and my self talk was vacillating between, “what am I doing here, and ok I think I can do this.” I didn’t love it, but feel it was a great stress buster this week.
It was another super warm day and happy I stuck to my AF last night.
Had a Stella 0.0 and popcorn after a light dinner.
Did pick up a low A / low cal KJ Chard in anticipation for wine tonight with a fish dinner.
Have a great Sunday!

Probably AF again today but won't count it until it's done. Still not feeling great so not really feeling like drinking which makes it easier. Trying to build some new habits so that when I am finally over this cold or flu or whatever I have, I will not automatically resort to my old habits.
Strange but true, if I don't feel like drinking because I don't feel well, it almost feels like it doesn't count since I'm not actively "trying" not to drink.8 -
@zensome ...AF is AF...take the win !!
@mfowler883 ...my almost 19 year old grandson wants to know where you place a pocket square when wearing a sweatsuit ?? I think he was kidding.6 -
Another AF to chalk up.
Yes @Womona I drink less on vacations. NO ONE wants to fly with a hangover. I did once long ago and I was miserable.
Plus we have a busy itinerary to follow. Lots of events I don't want to be sluggish hiking the grand canyon.or attending our sports events.7 -
ROFL @forestdweller1 I will give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that he was being funny. Well played. To be fair, I had a suit at 19 but didn't know how to really rock it.
Today, I traded in the last remaining bits of retired gear from the old guitar rig at Guitar Center and walked out with a new (to me) Audio-Technica LP60XBT turntable. It's not AWESOME but it's decent. Awesome costs a heck of a lot more than I care to spend right now. I had enough leftover to snag a copy of DSOTM, so that was a nice perk - man, it's not even subtle how different this sounds hahaha I know this album inside and out, backward and forward and can't count the times I've listened to it, I've owned it on vintage vinyl, cassette, CD, mp3, listened to it on YouTube and Spotify, now I have it on brand new vinyl and it sounds SOOOOOO GOOD. I think I will be looking for some of my favorites.
Planned A day, wine and Dark Wave makes it four and four. Not planning more until next Sunday, so we'll see how that goes.

Had planned white wine tonight and kept it to my personal limit. Nothing too grandeur planned or happening this week so AF goals seem on track.
Supposed to cool down this week then maybe I can resume wearing sweaters and getting to bed earlier this month.
@ahoy_m8 thanks for the tip on the KCI. Totally makes sense!

Good morning all! It's getting cold here in Virginia Beach (42F this morning). I'm trying again. I'm here to drink less for weight loss and overall health. For the most part, I've been having at least 1 drink every day (1 to 3) for several months now. I'm going to start up again on logging alcohol intake as well as calories (which I hate doing). Maybe I'll track calories every other day or weekdays only. I plan to stay AF for the next three days.7

October not off to great start - for this month so far 6 A, 2 AF (last Tuesday a post-work HH threw me off)

@RockinRobyn672 good to see you back. You have been missed. Each day is a new day to restart!
I’m trying AF until Saturday - that’s a 5 day break which I haven’t done in a long while. Have my Stella NA 0.0’s, cranberry juice and club soda, and herbal teas handy for this week.

I'm really trying to do the "Sober October" thing-- mostly. I'll probably have some champagne at my wife's birthday party.
It was difficult to visit my son at College, where he threw a dinner party for my wife and I and parents of a good friend. Everyone drank wine (which I don't drink much, as it bothers my stomach). I could have snagged a beer or something else, but I stayed away. At the end of the night I did feel a little left out. In any case, I got up the next morning and went running fairly early. And, it was a beautiful morning, so that was the payoff!

AF today. Made the rounds, scored a little used vinyl. Nothing too special, a beat up copy of Physical Graffiti, a slightly noisy copy of Gerry Mulligan's Freeway that looked better than it sounds, Gershwin and Telemann both in decent shape. There's a few other shops around town that I want to check out, but I was trying to watch my spending so kept it limited to thrift shops. I suspect most places aren't checking vinyl taken in nearly as well as I would want them to, nor pricing accordingly. Bella is FASCINATED by watching the records spin, of course.
Anyway, 5 AF, 4 A.

Update to yesterdays count….forgot it’s my birthday week? I’m another year older, wiser, stronger, and yes much healthier! Started LA in February and have lost weight, and inches. What I’ve gained is more energy, self-respect, self-control, and greater compassion for myself and others.
So, I had 2+1 glasses of white wine last night. Today, I will start racking up those AF days!

Happy Birthday, it sounds like you have really changed your life here.4 -
Off to vacation..sitting on the tarmac waiting for a log book to be delivered to the darn plane.
I WANT TO GET TO VEGAS NOW. 😡
Planning less drinking more living!6 -
AF - the past 4 nights and feeling glorious and then today - not! Ugh.
My usual trouble (devil) got to me - that is going to the supermarket hungry, tired, and irritable, at 5pm (@MissMay knows this). A bottle of California pinot grigio made it's way home.
Lessons learned - humans repeat the same behaviors over and over and over. I am so predictable and need to outsmart my human programming!
I really hope everyone enjoys the cooler Fall weather and I wish safe travels for those of you going to fun places!
Tomorrow is a new day and I re-focus on my own continuous self-improvement and commitment to out-smart myself

I was AF on Monday, and had a bit of an epiphany. I was craving wine, but once I had dinner, the craving had passed and I was able to be AF. So, I thought I needed wine, but what I really needed was food!
Last night I did cave and have one glass of wine, but didn’t refill that extra half glass even though I was tempted. Tonight I plan to be AF.5 -
@globalhiker and @womona : You both point out the odd thing about alcohol cravings: they may come from within deep in the brain, but they pass. And everything is harder if you are hungry (or, even worse, hangry).
The best defense is planning planning planning. Getting groceries early, planning who will cook what when, cooking extra some nights to eat on other nights, etc. (My wife and I share the shopping and cooking.)
Also, not stocking too many temptations. I have two beers in the fridge that I've been eyeballing since 9/24, when I decided to start a dry spell. I already poured out the leftover whiskey from my August vacation because I find it too tempting to have around the house. I probably should pour out the beer!

I love the conversation today around cravings and how they can pass @Womona, @globalhiker, and @Jthanmyfitnesspal.
I’m going to spend time letting that in today as it’s really powerful. I know how easily I can cave without being thoughtful and intentional in a decision to have a glass or just one more. Always learning here, thanks!

@Michieb125 Wishing you a very happy birthday week!
@MissMay - Hope you have a marvelous time in Vegas. We were there recently for the first time; flew into Vegas for a trip to the Grand Canyon. DH and I hiked to the Indian Gardens and back up in a day. It took about 8 hours. I was sore for a week after! Las Vegas was fun. We lost $25 in about 3 minutes, then spent the day hopping on/off the bus to check out the strip. We spent some time at Red Rock Canyon, which was spectacular.globalhiker wrote: »Tomorrow is a new day and I re-focus on my own continuous self-improvement and commitment to out-smart myself4 -
@RockinRobyn672 thanks and congrats on accomplishing your 3 AF in a row! Have fun on date night!
@MissMay enjoy your vacation time in Las Vegas! I used to travel there for work several years ago and had the good fortune to stay in top hotels. Yes, this thread has helped me immensely with LA and better habits.
Funny story: The MGM has huge pools on sight and once I stayed there for work (took my husband ) and it happened to be SPRING break in Vegas. You know where this is going…..Every pool was packed full of guys and girls maybe 20-30 something and dance music was blasting, drinks were happening, and a DJ was setting up on a deck for a party. We found a spot in the pool because it was so hot but found ourselves laughing our heads off because we could have been the age of parents or grandparents of the other pool goers, lol. Of course we left before the actual ‘party’ started.
Let’s join Rockinrobyn672 and refuse to give
up on ourselves!
Make it a great day!6 -
@Michieb125 Inspirational birthday reflection. Hope it's your best year yet!
What a fun week, but I've been all over the place with diet, haven't logged anything while travelling (restaurant meals are just hard to guess), and had drinks every day. I didn't have to, but I did. Now I'm back home, playing catch up and need to find those good habits I used to have.
Have a great weekend, everybody!6 -

Honestly, I had a bit of a struggle sticking to my AF days this week.
However, last night I followed through and chose no wine. We had the grandkids spend the night and have plans to go to a pumpkin patch this weekend!
