๐๐ก๐๐ญ ๐ ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ THIS ๐ฐ๐๐๐ค: 4.3lbs because I decided calorie deficit was plateu, so I interpreted the correct calculation for protein per pound of weight I was.
๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ: Definitely was the protein change and keeping the calorie deficit that same.
๐ ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ฌ ๐ฐ๐๐๐ค: managed only 1 day to his my protein daily goal but had a big win, also went to the gym 2 days even though I didn't finish the sessions as finding my feet at a new gym.
Congrats on the big loss your first week. Just wanted to remind you that calories make you lose weight not macros. A calorie is a calorie whether itโs from sugar, fat, carbs, protein, the body doesnโt know the difference in terms of calories. If protein keeps you in check then great, but the protein was not the source of your weight loss. If you believe otherwise would you please provide your source? This is to be sure everyone gets the facts regarding CICO or the thermodynamic concept that a "calorie" is a sufficient way to describe the energy content of food.
I get what you are saying, I have my masters in nutritional science/anatomy and contraindications when comes to people with medical needs. Hey there! ๐ While it's true that calories are a fundamental aspect of weight loss (calories in, calories out - CICO), the role of macros can't be overlooked. Proteins, fats, and carbs can influence satiety, energy expenditure, and even the composition of weight loss.
Studies like those published in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" and "Obesity" show that high-protein diets can enhance weight loss by promoting a feeling of fullness, boosting metabolism during digestion, and preserving lean muscle mass during calorie reduction to focus on targeting body fat and not your lean muscle mass.
So, while calories matter, the type of calories (macros) can impact how your body processes and utilizes them in the weight loss journey. Keep rocking your progress! ๐๐ช
Please donโt misquote me (this is my pet peeve so please just donโt ๐คฆ๐ผโโ๏ธ). I never said nutrition doesnโt matter for satiation and health, and itโs offensive to educate me on something I never said. Know what I mean?
You said you kept calories the same but changed protein and thatโs why you lost weight. The only way that would happen is if you lost water weight. If you lost actual fat lbs it was because of calories NOT protein. This is important to make clear because many people starting a high fat or high protein diet donโt know that you still need to count calories to lose weight for actual fat loss.
Glad you found the macros that satiate you, thatโs the goal! But weight loss is purely CICO ๐๐ป.
Thermodynamics is your energy balance, breaking down all food into heat, work, or stored calories.
Nutrition is a method in which the food is consumed by the organisms and utilizing the nutrients from the food.
Thermodynamics (calories) = weight loss
Nutrition = macros for health and satiety

๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ: This my first post on this site since using, so, newbie here. My story started with going to my son's wedding. We had to take a plane to the location. Boarded the plane and noticing the seat belt barely fit, was a wake-up call. I then got the pictures from the wedding and confirmed why I don't like to be in pictures, a whole denial thing going on. I used to be in great shape but with life and sport injuries I've made excuses not to get back there. Way overdue with โtime to get serious about my healthโ. I've been using MFP now for 54 days in a row to keep me on track with my new education on portion sizes and what's actually in the food I was eating. Was quite a shock to be honest. I'm also back on some lifting weights and indoor bike training. I am a little surprised that MFP doesn't track fiber as I find that itโs just as important as the things it does track, but overall, love the program.

I just found this string, and at a very opportune moment in my journey. Like some of you, I started back after getting some distressing news on my triglycerides, cholesterol, and A1C. I have for many years been pre-diabetic, and I historically consume a lot of alcohol. But whenever I've gotten poor blood results, I start back working out and dieting. This time, I hadn't been to a DR. since before Covid. My blood workup was so bad, I literally was in danger of stroking out. My triglycerides were over 580! Needless to say, I started back working out and dieting. I had been dining out every day, and drinking. I had a nasty gout flareup and wasn't able to wear a shoe, or work out, so I just enjoyed my life eating and drinking
Since August 23, I have religiously worked out, and dieted. I have cut out red meat (for now) and eat a vegetarian diet 3 days/week. The other 4, I have chicken or fish, and lots of veggies, salad, etc. Remarkably, I dropped 30 lbs in less than 2 months. And that is the problem. I continue to expect huge losses, and it's just not possible. I was losing at least a pound/week because I gave up alcohol. The balance was a calorie deficit from working out and diet.
But I've hit my second plateau. I continue to use the treadmill daily, and I push. I get my heart rate up by raising the incline, and I work. I also began weight lifting again. Now, I know part of my plateau is that I am building muscle mass at the same time I am dieting. I have increased my protein intake, and I do adjust my target caloric intake for the amount of working out I do
I do hope the plateau breaks soon, it's been 5 days that I have actually put on a lb or two over my low. It is frustrating, so I am glad to be able to share with you all. I know I need to keep working--in fact, I did a second treadmill workout just a few mins ago.
To all, I hope you keep on working. I do hope we do all benefit from sharing. And thank you for listening--and happy to get any feedback on how to break this plateau.3 -

Like I said to my sister, the changes happening on the inside of your body are more important than the visual changes your eyes see on the outside. When you DO go back to the dr. and get labs done- compare those results to the previous ones and let those good or better numbers be your inspiration to keep the faith. I too, hope this forum of sharing helps this time around. Iโve succeeded a few times in the past but Iโm tired of falling off the health/nutrition/fitness wagon and want this to be my last time starting over from a big gain. Iโm 65, and want to go into the last quarter of my life in the best physical condition, and STAY there! This needs to be a lifetime commitment to my SELF, FOR my SELF! Letโs all do this!! ๐ช๐ฝ
Good luck to us all on our journey! ๐3 -
@ggerics - Thank you for sharing. It gives me some insight on some of the challenges I will be up against. It sounds like you're on the right track. Like you mentioned, it could be muscle gain or you could be retaining water. The scale can't
recognize between muscle weight and fat weight. Therefore, the exact number on the scale isn't important. Its just a way to measure your progress. Do you use other forms of measuring your progress? I find it encouraging to take measurements and pictures too. You should be proud. 30 lbs. is great progress. Keep strong. ๐ชYou are capable!3 -
