Any marathon or ultra runners here? I can use any advice and tips I can get! This is my first long race and I’ve done many 5 and 10K races in the past. I’m running this year just to finish, not to win. I’ve never been very fast but I’d also like to not be dead last 😅
For now I set a target for myself at 100 miles for the month of January, and holding my pace consistently between 10-11min/mi by the end of the month. I currently can run up to 5miles avg 12min/mi but my pace is very sporadic.
These 24 hr races intrigue me but not in the way where I think I might do it. Good luck!
Also, so many questions! You mention having run lots of 5k, 10k. How long have you been running? Where are you starting from mileage-wise? How many days a week are you running now? What got you interested in this particular event?
Obv I’m working on limited info but I would encourage you to focus on speed OR endurance as you start training. Cutting 1-2 min/mile in a month is a big goal, one that I would be unable to do for sure. If a 100 mile goal also represents a significant increase in mileage, you’re at a higher risk of burning out or getting injured by tackling both at the same time. 10 months is a long time. It’s a marathon (or ultra in your case), not a sprint. Gotta have a running analogy in a running thread! Is 12 min/mi a truly easy pace? Race pace? Something in between? For example, my current paces range from around 9:05 to 11:30 depending on the purpose of the run (HM pace-based intervals down to recovery). During the summer I am more in the 10:45-12 min range. That shift in paces happens over the first couple of months as temps shift and my training plan ramps up.6 -
Random for the day:I was looking up symptoms over December and found this:
"...so symptoms can be confusing, often making a person feel a bit “NUTS” or “not understand their symptoms.”

Hello runners! I'm coming back for the second month.
Goal for January = 38 miles
Goal for 2024 = 1,000 miles
I'm training for my first marathon in Sept 24.
I will be running 5ks, 10ks and at least one half marathon through the year as I get to train for those distances.
I have a few other things going on in my academic, professional and personal life. 2024 is going to be a good year.
Good luck to all of you and I look forward to seeing your updates.10 -
Thanks for setting up January @AlphaHowls!
I’m aiming for 60 miles for January.
I just signed up for “run the year” for 2024.
Hopefully I can end up on a team. This’ll be my first year doing this.
@SummerSkier thanks for the link to the RTY site! I’ll look for your team. 😀
Oh, and a goal of mine for 2024 is to walk/run several races in 2024, mainly between 5K & 10K distances, including the April 20th 10K that I already signed up for.
I got on Athlinks earlier today and realized I’ve participated in almost 60 races (ranging from 5Ks to marathons) and 2 sprint triathlons in my past life.
Here’s to 2024!! 🥂 🎉
This is an amazing and inspiring group! Thanks for the encouragement and support!10 -
Great goal everyone.
Love the shoes @AlphaHowls !
I joined RTY and bONs team! I'll try to decide on goals tomorrow. I didn't have time today to sit down and think about it.

@eleanorhawkins a friend of ours hosts a “red barn challenge” every year. It’s a chip timed event around the pond and some fields at their farm.. about a 1mi loop. Goal is to do as many laps as possible in 24hrs. I have no idea what my personal target would be, but I see in the previous years some experienced racers have completed over 100mi! I am a total noob when it comes to long distance running and don’t have a clue what to expect or what I am capable of.. but I THINK I could shoot for 75-80miles as a beginner.
This is my first Ultra! I’ve done a few 5 and 10Ks as far as races go, but longest run distance was 15mi, 2 years ago! I’ve never really payed much attention to pace, just ran for fun.
My “training” for January is to get comfortable paying attention to and setting a consistent pace in order to build my endurance for the upcoming months.

Morning all.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!
Hope everyone had a great night last night.
Off the mark with a gentle 4.36 (7k), at much slower pace of 10"47. Precautionary for awhile. Don't want to risk an ankle injury.
Dry January here we go...

@tarun_yadavA Good job getting in your first run of the year!
I’m going to take today off. So tired. They finally posted the race results today. Last year I ran a 52:49:90. This year, I ran a 52.49:10. So yes my time was better than last year, but by 8/10 of a second . I’ll take it!
Other than that the race was mostly uneventful. My splits were more consistent than last year and I enjoyed having 2 of my kids waiting at the half way point of each lap. That definitely gave me some extra motivation.7 -
Happy New Year all!
@tarun_yadavA good job getting a run in. Hope ankle’s feeling ok.
Thanks @SummerSkier for setting up a RTY Team - I’ve joined 😀4 -
Nice start to the New Year @tarun_yadavA . I hope the ankle gets better quickly.
@Laurz9191 Congrats on the official PR! That's an awesome pace.

Hi @quilteryoyo! Great to see you. Happy new year.
I just signed up for the half for the race my friend is doing for her 50th state marathon. The Clarence DeMar in Keene NH on September 29. That should give me a kick in the pants after my surgical recovery to get back to at least being consistent enough with running so I can finish it! So I guess I have my 2024 goal now.
I haven't done a half since March 2022, which was my 19th HM race. This will be #20 so that's cool.9 -
Happy New Year everyone!
@Laurz9191 Congrats on that 10K PB I can only dream about getting under a 55 min 10K much less a 52 min one. WOW. You fly... 🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀
@tarun_yadavA hope the ankle is a thing of the past oddity and you are able to do you daily miles without being "careful".
I am excited about RTY this year for some reason I think because I convinced my friend MK to join and rejoin MFP and we have always had a friendly competition going for miles.
@daria0919 and @quilteryoyo thanks for joining the team. I wasn't going to have one at first but decided what the heck. Now we need at least @kgirlhart to join. ✅✅
I must not have been eating enough the past few days. odd really. But my energy level today was not as good as it has been. Or maybe it was the lack of sleep due to the fireworks in the neighborhood. I am lucky my cats don't seem to mind altho 2 of 3 crawled into bed with me. Some of them last night sounded more like mortars than rockets. Must be a new type that is popular. Definitely rattled the windows. Anyway, for RTY I need to avg 5.56 miles per day. That's probably not going to happen running but I like to start off that way so I pushed and did 5.64 at a speedy pace and then walked for 2 minutes and finished up with another mile. It was cold and windy tho even if the sun was shining. I wore shorts and probably should have worn long pants. I can tell in my hamstrings that my pace has been faster. It's interesting to me how different parts of your legs work harder at different paces.
Goal:100

Jan total: 8 miles
YTD: 8/1200 miles
Since I don’t have a mileage target this month I decided to start tracking YTD miles. Temp wise it was perfect this morning. Low 40’s and sunny. But that wind. OMG the wind! 15-16 mph making it feel more like 32F. I had 1 mile repeats on the schedule for today but out here I don’t really have a place flat enough to really do that workout and have any consistency in pacing. So, i did an out and back that is flattish for about 3 miles at the turn around point and planned to do those miles at race pace. Stretch my legs a little while accommodating the terrain. I figured the hills are basically little intervals, so good enough. The first 1.5 miles of the race pace leg felt pretty good and as I approached the turn around I realized that I wasn’t feeling the wind. Yep, I had been getting a tailwind and as soon as I made the turn I felt the full impact of the wind. The last 1.5 miles were tougher for sure and colder!
The hills felt easier than the day before yesterday. It always surprises me how quickly I see adaptation on the hills. I think this week was well placed to give me a little cardiovascular boost right before taper week.7 -
Hi! This sounds fun. Happy new year! My goal is:
Week one: walk or jog 1 mile a day
Week two: 1.5 mile a day
Week three: 2 mile / day
Week four: 2.5 mile / day
Week five: 3 mile / day

01.01 6°C 3.2km 27min 8:20/km stride repeats
3.22km/80.5km
Checking in. Was away on vacation the past 5 days and spent a lot of time walking (and eating cheese). Thus no running. On we go with my 10k running programme. Today things weren't too good because I have a lot of water in my legs from driving back from vacation. Running never goes to well then. Will be fine again with the next run or two.6 -
