I went to a concert a couple days ago and wore my loosest size 14 jeans again for the first time (the smaller ones don't quite fit yet). It was so pleasant getting dressed without having to worry about what I might wear: I know that everything in my closet fits me and looks nice. I wore high heels, and my feet didn't kill me afterward! I felt so good -- just a normal person going to a concert, and enjoying it without stress. No worrying about finding a close parking spot: I could easily walk from whichever spot I ended up with! No squeezing into the seat: there was plenty of room! No discomfort at being seen and judged for my weight!22

I'm very new.
I've been logging faithfully for only 17 days. I started out being very careful about what I am eating and have gotten a bit better at keeping that accurate.
In this short time, I have reduced my calories, but significantly increased the quality of food I'm eating.
As well, I started using an activity tracker as a reminder to get moving every once in a while. I've stepped up my activity quite a bit.
Prior to starting 17 days ago, I was released from the hospital. It was a huge wake up call. My sugar had gone unchecked for a while and my a1c had the doctors get an endocrinologist involved. Severe kidney infections had me circling the bowl, but the infections were likely being fueled by high sugar. My life just changed a bit with a type II diabetes diagnoses.
I didn't wait even a day to start making changes. 6 days after I left the hospital, I followed up with the endocrinologist. Based on blood glucose levels after just under week of better eating and more activity, he significantly reduced my meds. A week later, just a few days ago, they looked at my journal and cut them back again.
Being down a few pounds is cool. Replacing medication with better eating and a walk here and there feels pretty damn good. I think I'll keep going in this direction. It sure beats the other road I was on.41 -
This weekend I hit the "High" cardio fitness level according to my smart watch's VO2 max estimate. I started out "Below Average", have built my way up through the "Above Average" range, and finally crossed the line to the highest bracket.
Not only is this a personal victory in terms of making my fitness goals. This means I am much more likely to continue to be an active and healthy person as I head into my "over the hill" phase of life. I always admired my great-grandmothers who stayed slim and active into their 80s and 90s. I feel more confident that I'll follow that same path.25 -

My mum said my legs are looking smaller!
I had cake dished up for me at a party yesterday and I struggled to eat it all
I was walking home and my six year old niece wanted me to carrry her and I managed for about a hundred meters after doing a delivery job for about four months. I have gotten much stronger! I am often carrying 10+ kg.18 -
This new year the scale was at its highest, and I almost hit 300 pounds. My highest weight was 3 weeks ago at 288.
I got a very physical job which set me back at 270 pounds, what I started at last year. I'm totally motivated to work out more so hopefully the number will keep shrinking!14 -
Just in case some people don't realize, a "NSV" means a non-scale victory. If you get good news from your scale, that's a victory. If your pant don't fit because they've got too big, or if your ring falls off, or if you can walk stairs effortlessly for the first time, that's a NON-SCALE victory.
Congratulations for ALL victories! I like to read about Non-Scale Victories here.
I'll offer one. I played disc golf yesterday. My score wasn't great at 13 over par. There are still some trees standing after the ice storm, and I didn't even hit every single one of them. But my NSV is that I sort of played "Speed Golf." Or I set a personal par for future. Speed golf is when you time your round to set par. Then next time you play, you have to add a stroke for every minute longer. I think you also get to shave a stroke for every minute FASTER. It works better if you don't have to wait for other groups. Yesterday two twosomes let me play through, so I had a decently fast round. I played 18 holes in almost exactly 60 minutes. I might have set myself up for failure since I went fairly fast and that will be hard to beat unless I jog. I do walk fast. I felt good, and I'll go play again in the next few days.
I think that I should set a different par time for each different course. This is my most local course - it's pretty much close enough to walk, but I usually ride a bike because it takes too long to walk there and back.9 -
2,000 yard swim in 66 minutes. Not the fastest swimmer on the planet, but the swims are getting longer and faster than when I started two months ago.
My food diary is insane today, but I’m already in the black and still have a couple biggish workouts left to record.
Wednesday and Thursday are my heaviest workout days of the week.16 -
Comparative data from Garmin Connect; reference group is women aged 65-69 not everyone, but I still feel pretty good about it. (I'm 68 F.) It reflects steady state stationary bike pace at moderate intensity for me (usually somewhere 100-110W average) during 15k workouts (about 40 minutes including cool down), which may be unfair since I don't know what others are doing?
17 -
@AnnPT77 I would imagine that Garmin figures those variables into your ranking, since it has access to all that data for its users? Maybe that's overly optimistic of me but either way, I think you have reason to be pleased!3

I pushed myself at the gym today. I added an extra set to all of my movements. I added weight to many movements. I felt good when I was done.
The REAL NSV will be tomorrow if I don't have too much soreness. Maybe the sauna will help prevent that. Even if not - it felt great.11 -
Rereading a few of my recent posts, my NSV seems to be a mental turnaround to a more positive person.
Massive win.

GMI was 5.7 as of this morning, it's not the only indicator, but for my situation, it's not a bad thing6

While reading online pants size guides and reviews, I’ve realized that I am slightly smaller size-wise than the average person at my height and weight. I no longer have bulges and “problem areas” like I used to at the same weight. Most clothing sits the way it’s meant to. I’m not super toned like a bodybuilder, but it’s enough that I’m not self conscious about any specific area. I can walk around in a bikini without even thinking about it. Thank you, weight training.
This could also be a product of age and an improved sense of self-worth as well as the fashion industry being vastly different from the 90s/2000s when I was growing up. I am grateful for the fact that normal female hips and butts are now allowed to exist and are even celebrated.16 -
This NSV is also kind of a NSF (non-scale failure).
I buy shirts from second-hand stores. Shorts too. I buy jeans new because I know what size I wear. Well, I did. For the longest time I wore a particular size. Then starting around 2017 when I lost weight, my pants were too big. I was chuffed when it was time to replace my jeans, and I was wearing a smaller size. That was a long-ago victory. It still tastes sweet.
Eventually even THOSE jeans were feeling a bit too small, and I was going to be able to get the next smaller size when the time came. That was even sweeter. Well, fast forward to late 2020. During the pandemic, for a number of reasons that aren't important, I gained back some of the weight I had lost. For the next several years I bounced around and lost some of it back, then regained... rinse and repeat. I know this rings true for many. Even at the slightly higher weight, I was still at a healthy weight. Not ideal, but healthy.
Well last November there were some good prices on the jeans I wear. I had decided that, "Well, I guess I'm going to be this size now." So I bought three pair. They fit fairly well after the initial shrink, and a bit better after the second wash. This past month I've got back down closer to my ideal goal weight. That's a scale victory, but it's relevant. Guess who's brand new jeans are now too big? Yep. That's the failure. It's also the victory. I need to get a new belt I reckon. I can still wear these, and they'll just be a little baggy. Maybe in a few years when it's time for the next pairs I will still be at my ideal weight and size and I can finally size down.
In the meantime, I'll wash a few more times in HOT water and see if I can shrink 'em just a little bit more. Maybe I'll even treat myself to a couple pair of Carhartt pants. I've worn out a pair, and they were getting way too big anyway.

I'm noticing that there is less strength to my excuses for either not going for a walk at all or shorting the distance. I'm still making bad food choices when i let my self munch but I'm thinking about it before eating said food. I'm still at the whatever I don't care stage for the most part but there is at least conscious thought of what is going into my mouth. I also have logged most of my meals this week so far and some of the random munchy food. there is hope for me after all.15

I ran a 14 min 48 sec mile this last Sunday! That's beating my high school time of 15 min 03 secs! Now I need to top my next best mile time of 12 min 42 secs from 10 years ago. I can't remember my mile time from my peak of running, I want to say in was in the 10 min 30 sec range.
Either way! I'm trying to shave 15 seconds at least off my mile time each week before June if I can! I want to finish a 5k in 35 minutes!17 -
This is a sweet but TMI NSV, and not nearly as creepy as it sounds.
Today, my mammographer was asking the usual questions : prior cancer, any soreness or unusual issues, any enlargements?
I told her no, except for extra loose skin from weight loss, and a reduction many years ago.
She stopped, stared intently at my chest for a moment, and said, “No problem, honey. Those are the best ones I’ve seen on an older woman.”
Then she stopped again, blushed a little, and said, “Sorry, honey. I spend all day looking at the things”.
I feel kinda cocky. The Gurls got evaluated by a pro.
Maybe all those 🤬 fly reps are good for something after all.26 -

I just ran into some photos from an event almost five years ago, and I'm blown away by how incredibly awful I looked back then. I knew I wasn't in good shape, but I didn't realize I was THAT fat. I look and feel so much better now! Seeing old me, and knowing what I look like now, has totally made my day.18
-
@springlering62 - haha, that’s a great story! I have panic attacks when I go for my annual mammo. I’m going to try thinking of your story, instead!6
-
I never have to have a mammogram again: I have no mamm to gram. You don't want that, trust me: The on ramp is pretty sub-recreational.
Get your mammogram, even if it's unpleasant. The earlier the diagnosis, the better the prognosis.
Men: You can get breast cancer, too. Not many men do (relatively), but a higher percentage of men who get breast cancer DIE of it because so many don't know that that little painless bump on their chest could be trying to kill them. They are diagnosed late - sometimes too late. Get it checked out!17 -
This was a day of multiples:
- I was going to hike with a friend. He opted out, which is totally fine. I went anyway. That isn't much of a victory; I hike on my own plenty. Instead of going where we had planned, I went somewhere else. We'll reschedule for next week. Instead of doing a short hike (minimum of about two miles, but I could add on some by extending the trail in either direction from the top where the upper trailhead is), I parked way down below and hiked the whole way. This saved gasoline from driving up the very steep grades and turned a short hike into a nice eight-mile 3.5 hour hike. That's kind of a NSV.
- Instead of coming straight home, I went by the gym because it wasn't that far out of the way. I had not intended to do any exercise, just sit in the steam room for 15 or 20 minutes. Well, I got dressed and walked out to the pool where the steam is and saw only one lane occupied. Instead of getting in the steam, I went back to the locker room, put on swimming pants, got my gear, and swam for a half hour. That's number two. Unplanned, but took advantage of an empty pool because - it's always full!
- I usually swim with a dive mask and snorkel. I have "zoomer" training fins. I swam ten lengths with that, then swapped out for goggles and left the fins and did ten lengths of breast. I can do that all day. But for some reason, I decided to try my freestyle stroke without mask, snorkel, or fins. I did OK. I started adding in a length of that in between lengths of breast. I was able to keep up with my breathing. I must be getting better. For fun I put the fins back on. I for sure went faster, and could still swim with just goggles. Now THAT is a real victory for me. I'm not fast, but to be able to swim like "normal" people is something I just have trouble with. Maybe I'll get it down in the next few years.
That's all. Just three.17 -

Omg, my husband wants to know what I’m laughing at!!!!
The sign on the mammogram waiting room read “BIRCH ROOM”. I did a doubletake because I misread it.
The aide laughed and said,”I know what you think you saw! Everyone does!”

Adding 25lb plates to each side of the leg press and still hitting as many reps as I did before (3x12). I am pretty sure I'll be able to do 4 plates a side for 3x10!
3plates a side was big for me. 4 plates makes me VERY happy.
Also, I did 3 reps of deadlifts at 275lb. That used to me my ugly 1rm. (And that was at the END of my set - 10x135; 5x165; 5x195; 6,6 x 245; and 7, 6 by 260!)
Sometimes the gains seem so minimal, until you look back from whence you came.16 -
I did not feel like running last night, I had run Sun, Mon, Tues already and skipped Wednesday to recover. I asked my neighbor if she wanted to run with me last night for accountability. She said yes, we did 3 rounds of walk 3min/run 1-1.5min and walked the rest of the way. I was really not feeling it, and my running was slower than usual.
But I did it! I pushed myself to be uncomfortable and this officially marks 5 weeks into my health journey and I haven't given up!20 -

That is so huge!!! I OFTEN do not want to go to the gym, and last night was one of those nights, but I have found that I rarely regret going, and sometimes my best nights are the ones I had to push my self to go to.
Super awesome that you pushed through and have been pushing for 5 weeks. You've got this!!
Dedication takes over when motivation is lacking.14 -
Someone at work noticed that I have been losing weight and toning - She said I look slimmer in my jeans - fantastic!16
