I'm in year 9 overall, just under a year of loss, 8 years since maintaining a healthy weight (after around 3 previous decades of overweight/obesity).
Does it work? Yeah, it can work, if it suits a person. Different people may need different methods. Calorie counting works great for me. Life transforming, honestly.
Stick with it, you'll succeed. Everything doesn't need to be perfect immediately. As long as you keep refining your plan and chipping away at implementing it, you'll make progress.

MFP 'saved' me when other weight-loss attempts failed.
From a BMI of 34 to 22, starting in 2019.

Previously I tried Weight Watchers. That was almost 20 years ago.
I’m rural so there weren’t any local meetings.
Counting points helped, but wasn’t as informative as the nutritional information on MFP.
And exercise was more of an afterthought. That was back in the days where I could actually run, too. (I do miss that!)
I was doing their online program and it was incredibly expensive for a few benefits. And practically zero admin help when trolls invaded the boards and spent hours every afternoon making fun of the participants there.
Yeah, I admit I can occasionally be a bit thin skinned but this was absolutely over the top stuff. Everyone on the WW boards were trying so hard to get someone in charge to do something about it and the response was crickets.
That experience really soured me towards WW.
Then there was SparkPeople.
Absolutely lovely website. With a great and supportive community.
Which failed due to not enough revenue.
Some of us migrated here, and personally, even though I slacked off the last couple years? It’s been great.
Overall the community here is very welcoming.
The system is good, and very customizable.
If there is a real issue on the forums there is a clear process in place to resolve it.
The free version is good enough for most people. And it’s relatively affordable for the premium membership.

measuring food on a scale was a game changer for me. like many people, i over estimated portion sizes. getting a kitchen scale made it completely worthwhile. my family teases me about weighing everything, but i lost 20 lbs 7 years ago and have kept it off!16

I Lost 17.5 pounds since Jan 14th using MFP premium. I weigh everything, count macros, and do 1200 calories Mon-Fri. Weekends I bump it up to 1500-1750 so I can eat some of the foods I love and not get discouraged. At first weight came off quick, but now that my body adjusted its coming off at a rate of about a pound a week to 10 days. At first, I was very discouraged but now I am looking at it in another way. The weight may not be coming off as fast as I want but it is still coming off. I am 5'8" and started at 209.7. Today I am 192.2.15

First, what a great question.
I know people who have been in maintenance for over 10 years using this app. I haven't had as much success. I've lost weight and then gained it back several time over 10 years.
These days I use it as an index of sorts. I want to know what my calories are to be sure I'm on the right track, but I don't need to. I started meal planning since being diagnosed with Diabetes. That is so simple. I just cut out the carbs and sugars. That's it. It's tough to overeat on a diabetic meal plan.
If you look at my bio you'll see that I've lost 91 pounds. Most of that was from being sick for more than a year. I had diabetes and didn't know it. About 20 pounds is what I lost since going to meal plans.

i have been on here 10 years, lost 40 lbs. One time I did gain 25 of it back after a bad flu and then did not log and ate everything in sight but got back with it and lost it again. So I love MFP, makes me accountable.5

I think you have to bear in mind that all eating plans rely on the user sticking to them. MFP is easier than most to keep to because it isn't extreme. It's sensible and makes you eat a balanced diet.8

Yes, it makes it easier to stay on track. The premium version even more so as the time stamps give a lot of insight. Like all tools, the importance is to find its best use for you. I am disabled and one of the ways I handle my illness is through my diet. Therefore, I use my Food Log to both plan my diet—I eat the same thing everyday for a myriad of reasons—in addition to tracking as soon as I eat. I also am not afraid to change my Diary Settings or even my goals and macros as required. The freedom to customise is one of the main reasons this works so well for me.
I have gone from a size 24 to a size 2 and maintained it for over two years. During this time I have learnt to cut myself some slack. If I go off my plan or don’t track, I show compassion for myself and start again the next day.

I've lost 50 pounds since January 2020 counting calories and exercising using MyFitnessPal. It's not magic, it's slow going, but if you keep trying it will work.
We know that research shows obesity is not just about calories in, calories out. It's different for everyone, but I've found it's the only thing that will help me long term. I am a numbers person, so I enjoy figuring out my nutrition everyday and tweaking it. If someone doesn't like logging their food and inputing their recipes it may not be the right app for them. I still have about 29 pounds to lose.5 -
I lost over 30kg with MFP and have gained it all back through my own poor choices, so I'm back because it's the only thing that's ever worked for me long term.5

It works if you are committed to it. I lost 74lbs the first time and 90lbs the second time (I fell off the wagon due to my binge eating disorder), but the whole time I was committed to the app it served me great.2

Self awareness is one of the best features of this app. Plus I love monitoring over time and seeing where I can improve, getting the most "bang" for my calorie bucks so to speak.
I have been off and on here for a decade. My weight has fluctuated over the decade but when I need to get back on track, this is the best tool for me. It helps with meal planning, and even when I want to splurge, I can account for it. I no longer look at just losing weight, it helps me maintain my health!1 -
I've been using this for a while. It does defiantly helps keep me on track. In the last 11 months, I've lost 41 pounds following this. Most of the weight loss has been within the last 8 months.1

It worked for me. Lost around 32lbs using the CICO method and have been maintain for 5 months now.
Being self-aware of calorie consumption is what it's all about and it works if you stick to it!

Nope, this isn't a magic pill that "works" or doesn't "work". It's a tool that that can be very useful if you're committed. I've been using MFP since 2009, I've lost and gained weight 3 times since then and I'm currently still losing weight since I chose to make the effort again in February last year (I've lost 60 lbs since then). I'm Nerdy about this kind of tool so it works for me, for some people it won't work at all because it's way too much work for them. I like tracking everything every day using a fit bit and MFP together, for me, it works really, really well and when I get to where I want to be I'll keep tracking everything to maintain that weight. I also really like that I don't have to change my diet, I just eat less and exercise more.

I can claim success, but MyFitnessPal is only a small part of the reason. I think people are either committed or not committed, myself included. MyFitnessPal is just a tool. Once you get to the place where you're ready for changes, you really could do it without this app. I hope you are successful and continue to make progress.1

Day 284. Went from 260 to 170 today. Eat less and you will loss the weight. This app is just a tool.4

It works (for me)! The weight went up when I stopped logging! And has now started to go down once I started logging again! I have a love hate relationship with weight since I was a kid....so all is fair in love and war!2 -
I think the greatest benefit is to help ensure you get the proper amount of nutrients and don’t get too much of the wrong things. Tracking sugar, sodium, protein, carbs, calories, etc. can be a crucial step toward a healthy lifestyle. For me, I like it because if I get to a plateau or realize I am not making any progress, I can go back and look at what I did and what I ate and make changes as necessary. This by itself isn’t magical. But with the right mindset and a strong commitment, you will definitely succeed. Good luck to you.1

Since counting calories really isn't that difficult and you're NOT restricted on the types of food you like to eat, then many find it easy to do.

I"ve been tracking my food since 2011 and on here since 2013 and it definitely works. If you're honest about what you eat and track it all. it also helps to see the macros and for me looking at the week results reminds me if I've been over too much. Exercise every day in some way is a must for me. Have lost about 80 lbs and kept it off for 11 years.5

Since counting calories really isn't that difficult and you're NOT restricted on the types of food you like to eat, then many find it easy to do.

I may have chosen the wrong App. I’ve been on Zepbound for a couple months, lost 40 lbs and was looking for an App to track calories and workouts. My problem is the minimum calorie requirement. I’m in my 60’s so 1200-2100 calories a day is way too much, even while going to the gym 4 or 5 days a week. After taking a shot, the next three days it’s extremely uncomfortable pushing down 1200 calories. The App tells me a 900 calorie day won’t count in the weekly average and some other features. Not sure if there is a way to adjust this, if anyone knows please reply.0

You can set your daily calorie goal to whatever you want. I'm 4' 11, 70 and am not very active. So I probably use only 1400 calories a day. I set my goal to 900-1000 and just ignore the warning that I am not eating enough. The warning is annoying but I just treat it as noise. Sometimes I'm under 1000, most times I'm just over. I have been losing about 3/4 pound a week. That's a healthy rate.
As for MFP working - I've tried all kinds of diets, but counting calories has been the most effective.1 -
Honestly it's the best system out there, but don't expect it to do the work for you, you only get out what you put in. You have to be consistently logging long term under your calories to see the results, if you "cheat" then you're only cheating yourself.
I lost 70lbs back in 2014 then another 90lbs in 2022 (I fell off the wagon myself between then)2 -
I've been on MFP for 135 days and weighed in this a.m.. I'm down 36lbs thus far. This app works if you make it part of your daily program. It took me a while to find friends and create my own personal support system but I'm introverted so that was no surprise. But it's taught me to NOT compare myself to others but rather celebrate my own journey while I learn about my own dietary and exercise needs. MFP really did change my life.3

In 2016 I was 55yo and weighed 315lbs.
Thanks to MFP; in a year I dropped to 200lbs.
To get under 20% Body Fat; I continued to drop weight (but slower) and by 2022 (with MFP and Exercise)
I was at 160lbs. I now use MFP for Maintenance and monitoring Macros.

You sound just like my body type and i am trying to get down but my body holt on to my fat like we are drowning haha1
