There can be a bit of a learning curve.

A food scale for stuff prepared at home can be a big help. If you go that route, finding one with a tare button (to reset to zero after you put a dish or container on it) and a decent capacity (mine weighs up to 11 pounds I think) if you do much large batch cooking (a pot of stew or soup, for example) can be helpful.
