CHALLENGE:
This group is overflowing with strong & reflective peeps. I’m that one at the dinner party that throws out a “deep” philosophical question to ponder…
So…. Please, if you accept, “At what point in your life did weight become “a thing” and WHY? Real reasons only…. Answer here in R256 or R257 or ignore the challenge. This might be against the rules @quiltingjaine….?! But knowing WHEN & WHY is important to the journey.
#WHEN.WHY.WEIGHT.IS.A.THING
I’ll go first!
#WHEN.WHY.WEIGHT.IS.A.THING
When & Why did weight become a “thing”?? 7th grade @ school. A boy said to me in front of all my classmates,”Carolyn, if you had to haul butt, it would take 2 to 3 loads. “
Even though I was an athlete at that time (competitive swimmer), I was “beefier” than most girls my age. They were all super SUPER thin … and ate anything & everything and did not gain. I was different. Always self-conscious. From that point on my weight yo-yo’d. It’s been a roller coaster, see-saw ever since. Constant, ever-present weight swings from 15 to 40lbs for 50+ years.
My mindset and perception of “health” was only connected to the scale and pants size. To me, healthy meant a certain weight… vs choosing new permanent healthy habits. My new mindset is to live the highest quality of life to avoid the healthcare system (from personal choices) and to be actively/physically engaged with my family. I accept and embrace this lifelong journey. Onward!

There is no real short answer.
I was chubby in grade school but it wasn't an issue for me. So it wasn't a "thing" yet. And I eventually lost the weight.
I gained 55lbs when I was pregnant (age 29), ballooned to 185 and got back down to 130. It was a "thing" then, but I seemed to have conquered it.
Then life started happening (details in spoiler) and it was a gradual increase over time. By 2002 it was a real "thing" and I'm still working on it. I agree with you that only in the last few years has my definition of "healthy" changed. It was all about the number on the scale, vitals were all normal, so no concerns at the time (not thinking that it could get worse at a later time).
Reflecting back > 2023 was horrible, it's a wonder I "broke even" with no actual gain.
I don't necessarily binge eat, but I do tend to turn to comfort food and drink, which are not necessarily healthy choices. Also, my challenge with portion control rears its ugly head, as it's easy to say no to a second helping of chicken breast or broccoli but not a creamy lasagna or garlic bread.
So, I guess I am a stress eater?
The book Younger Next Year changed my mindset but I still have a ways to go!Grade School - Chubby Kid by 4th - 6th grade
Junior High - Walked to school daily - Lost Weight
High School - Was extremely active - food choices weren't the best but I remained slim
College - Typical college - don't recall gaining the freshman 15 however
1983 to1987 - Got Married - was around 117lbs - worked out a lot, gained maybe 5lbs or 10lbs.
1988 to 1990 - Got pregnant (had a miscarriage in 86 so was paranoid) Gained 55 lbs (185)
1991 to 1995 - Got Divorced, Lost most over time and ended up around 130
1996 to 1997 - Became extremely depressed due to life, work, stuff. Decided to move from CA back to IL
1998 to 1998 - Mom diagnosed with lung cancer. Commuting 3+ hours a day. Weight increased to around 165
1999 to 2002 - 4 years - Gained 30lbs (7lb to 8lbs each year) My Mom died in Nov 1998, I moved, extra responsibility of my disabled sister...yada yada yada

2017 to 2017 - 1 year - Lost 15lbs - Keto for the first half of the year. 26 year old stepdaughter moved in
2018 to 2019 - 2 years - Gained 15lbs - started new job but primarily sedentary and stress of house guest
2020 to 2022 - 3 years - Lost 5lbs - Lost 5 - House guest moved out, covid Gained 6 - Back to in office, sedentary, Loss 6. Net 5lbs. Same sister diagnosed with breast cancer.
2023 to 2023 - 1 year - Was down 10lbs by July, then life happened and I gained it all back- Diagnosed with gout (severe pain) and it took about 3 months to determine
- Nursed my husband as he recovered from having Knee replacement surgery
- Could have easily been killed in a car accident when my car came to a stop on a busy expressway (80mph +) for no apparent reason
- Lost my dog of 14 years
- Struggled with my current husband wanting to revisit (discussed this in 2015) the topic of getting my first marriage annulled

04/13 -181.2- (Trend weight 181.4) I got into that Christmas chocolate buried in the garage freezer last night. The cravings were HORRID. I’ll choose a lower calorie/carb day today on the zig-zag plan to help make up for it and balance my calories for the week a little better. Water, water, water also. I’ve been avoiding too much thinking it would add to the foot swelling.
04/14 -181.0- (Trend weight 181.4) I went out-of-town unexpectedly yesterday to chase down a Facebook purchase. Dinner was out and not so healthy but so far the scale is okay. I may end up going out-of-town again today to pick up a special order door for my bedroom that came in. I babysat overnight and am waiting for my daughter to come pick him up. Gosh, I love my time with my little Prince!

4/6 DNW--Out of town—lots of walking and fly fishing, vacation food
4/7 DNW--Out of town—Hiked to Anna Ruby Falls, vacation food
4/8 DNW—Out of town—most of the day in the car, back on track with food, though. I expect a gain tomorrow, but it’ll be ok. I’ll work it back down.
4/9 181.4 WooHoo! Right where I started before vacation. We did try to be careful in our choices and split some entrees, etc, and were very active, so I guess it worked out. Now to keep on track and make a downward move by the end of the round.
4/10 180.4 Hoping this can continue. I really need to get back to real exercise. Weather has been nasty the last few days, so we are pinned up inside most of the time.
4/11 179.2 Happy about this. Hope I can stay under 180, but that's not what usually happens. Takes a few days (or longer) to stay under for good. Fingers crossed! Did yoga last night to get back in the groove with exercise. Still so much rain!
4/12 179.4 Took a walk in the neighborhood last night until the rains soaked us, so I came home and finished with a Leslie Sansone Walk at Home video. Had a salad with salmon on top tonight instead of something that could have been a salt bomb at a favorite restaurant tonight. Hoping not to bounce but I know it’s a very real possibility.
4/13 179.2 sure am hoping I can stay here or below until the end of the round!
4/14 178.4 Got in a long walk yesterday afternoon and it felt great! I’m in a pretty good place with food right now. Not very tempted and if I am, I’m content with just a bite. Allowed myself a small serving of frozen yogurt with the kids after I picked them up from school, but worked it into my plan for the day.

🎷 65 yrs young F, 5ft 4 Round 256 (my 186th). So grateful @Quiltingjaine for another round.
Goals for this round; to lose! To be consistent and lose something. Takes me up to the day before I officially become an OAP! How can that be I can’t possibly be that old – I feel much much younger 😊.
Good luck everyone for a successful round.Achieved goal weigh of 125lb in summer 2016 by losing 66lb and then gradually gained between 7 and 11 since then & didn't want to gain any more, it’s taken me 75 rounds to achieve target of 130 = back to maintenance!! But then I crept up again, so need to get back to around 134. A healthy lifestyle must be a permanent way of life.

SW RND 256
4/6 141.8 – (trend 141.3) – again no structured walking as attended funeral of an elderly aunt (94), she was the last of her generation, so a sobering thought for me is that now I am the oldest of my paternal side of the family!!
4/7 141.8 – (trend 141.4) need a move downwards now! 9.85 miles walked, all but 13 exercise calories eaten back. Getting some walking in today will be a challenge with Storm Kathleen around.
4/8 140.4 – (trend 141.3) – yes! The drop I was waiting for! 8.61 miles walked, less than 20% of exercise calories eaten back.
4/9 140.4 - (trend 141.2) pleased this number has stuck, 9.34 miles walked, 20% exercise calories eaten back.
4/10 140.4 – (trend 141.1) – only managed 5.77 miles walking with the persistent driving rain & wind. When will this rain ever stop!
4/11 140.4 (trend 141) - 9.59 miles walked 40% exercise calories eaten back.
4/12 141.4 – (trend 141) no structured walking; childminding little DGS.
4/13 141.4 – (trend 141.1), 11.97 miles walked all + exercise calories eaten back which I recon will show it’s ugly number tomorrow ☹
4/14 142.2 – (trend 141.2) 5.66 miles and 54 flights of stair yesterday around Warwick Castle, 200 calories over.
4/15 141.6 – (trend 141.3) – 11.89 miles walked, just less than 50% exercise calories eaten back. A grand total of 0.2 pound lost, but a loss never the less! If I hadn’t had that 2 day binge mid round then what could it have been ? Must have a “clean” round next, maybe being a year old will make me a year wiser?
When & why? I’ve always been overweight, was a “chubby” baby that Mom struggled to keep satisfied, a fat toddler, overweight child (this is when my binging started – in secret of course!), a flabby teenager and so on. I was always the one who wanted to blend into the background as I felt very self-conscious, always starting diets on Mondays to be broken at the very first temptation. All my family are the same, parents and siblings even aunts and some cousins overweight.
Lost 66 pounds 11 years ago and finally felt better with my own body, but maintenance is a constant struggle and have gradually gained 10 pounds or so, which now I want to lose, but the battle is very real, I just love food and especially all the “bad” things which I just can’t seem to resist! Not only that once I get a taste of chocolate/cake/biscuits I’m an addict which I can’t seem to stop. Hopefully this confession will stay in my mind next round before I start indulging in a binge and not afterwards as is what usually happens ☹. I must start thinking again that there is always tomorrow, I don’t have to gobble everything up all in one day. Thank you for listening.

@Chapter_3 although I was a very healthy active child I was always “rounder” then my stick thin sister who was a carbon copy of my mothers frame. The comparison of our bodies started very young.
In response to a childhood trauma I started stealing money from around the house to secretly buy food at the corner store and binge eat around 7 or 8. I also remember lying to my mother when questioned as to what happened to a one pound container of macaroni salad…
I was 11 when the TV show Roseanne debuted and my friends brother very loudly compared my butt to hers.7 -

4/7 ⚖️131.9 Today: all the above plus a little work, 📿rope & 📝 Habit Mechanic. Still out of sorts but getting back in the groove.
4/8 131.2
🎾 🙆♀️🤸🏼🏋️♀️🚶♀️📿💦 📝✅
Still not “feeling” the “healthy & fit” …. I keep reminding myself that I am NOT my thoughts or my feelings. Somehow I was successful in completing all of my round commitments yesterday even though I felt an internal braking system gnawing at me to stop & piddle. NSV: But I somehow pushed through it. Took every ounce of energy. Thank God. ✅Hit macros. Yes, I’m counting again.
That unavoidable, awful, worrisome, emotional family issue is currently at full throttle & front & center. …. All of my joy gets sucked out. Takes tons of energy to even TRY to stay positive. I conquered the internal battle yesterday by simply “doing” the commitments. ✅. Didn’t even feel good about it… Just blah.
But…. I do get to see my DGS today… Have not seen him since 4/27. I cannot wait! He sure is a sight for sore eyes. A full day of my “to do” list shall be completed before I pick him up. Today: Will fake it till I make it …
Let’s go stretch…. Onward.
4/9 DNW 🙆♀️🤸🏼🏋️♀️🚶♀️📿💦 📝✅
Rained all day. No tennis but ✅ everything else and macros. Only 10 min of 🏋️♀️but it was a good 10 min. I’m thinking I’m not eating enough.… Will eat extra protein today.
I definitely managed my mood better yesterday than the day before. Was able to change worrisome thoughts successfully throughout the day. Staying mindful & present is KEY. Oh, enjoyed BIGtime my grandson yesterday-God’s gift to me. ❤️
NSV: Catching unhelpful thoughts quickly is slowly becoming a helpful habit.
4/10 130.9
Fake it till u make it actually worked yesterday. Managed to get it all done except 📿. Able to stay “in the present” most of the day. Spent too much time w/🎾.
My day was made fabulous with two hours spent with my DGS. We played basketball and went for a walk to the nearby stadium to watch high school track&field. He was mesmerized! We practiced the long-jump!
Today: All schools are canceled because of severe weather. I’ll be home working on taxes, work and completing my “Healthy & Fit” ✅ list.
NOTE: My sleep patterns are in complete disarray. I’ve been up since 4:30 & positive my cortisol levels are high from stress. Practicing mindful breathing helps a lot but sleep sucks. Onward!
NSV: slowly accomplishing my goals because let’s face it, how many MawMaws out there can practice the long jump with their DGS?! 😎💪🏻❤️
4/11 Thunderstorms & severe weather all day yesterday. My neighborhood ok. Used the day for taxes /work. At computer eight hours. Nothing else got done.
Today: will eat right& ✅ my list. (Work @ clients office & dinner with friends. ).
4/12✅ day!!! Managed to accomplish ✅healthy & fit list.
NSV: Working with client is going better than I had imagined. Our time spent is of value to both. I’m enjoying it! I’m giving part credit to “feeling” good. I’m feeling strong- perhaps this Improves my self-confidence and delivery… Go figure!
Played basketball with DGS for about 45 min, 🏋️♀️for 45 min… Laughed so hard! I was just a little short on steps, so DH& I walked to dinner (Gorgeous evening)! ✅ 10k! But….. FORGOT HM &📿!
BTW: Our friends know that I have a special “WOE” … hard cheeses for app& served me (just me) baked/roasted chicken w rosemary & garlic, & perfect avocado on the side…. Delicious!
Found out my girlfriend has a girlfriend with the same “condition” with veggies & leafy greens…. I’m not alone! Felt good to talk about it with someone who gets it.
Today: 🎾😎 & ✅ will have perfect weather and DGS!
4/13 ⚖️133.4 Jumping on the scale conundrum and joining several others this round with true shock. THREE pounds? I’ll drink more water than usual today. I did eat later than usual last night…. And, I’m still not sleeping well? Stress? These are all rhetorical questions because I know it’s timing and not real weight. So we journey on.
I join the crowd here for not wanting to post, but I posted it anyway simply to share what we all experience. Inexplicable.
I’ll throw this out though – I sure wish I had an inexplicable 3 pound drop!!!! That has never happened!
Today- no tennis but all else is planned. Extra long walk this morn to take in a gorgeous day!
📿🏋️♀️😎.
4/14 132.4lbs ⚖️ still settling from whatever is going on inside me…. Walked 6 mi then the rotten family stuff altered & RUINED my entire day. Will do my best to refocus today- emotionally exhausted. Glad I have 🎾 this afternoon & will 🙆♀️🚶♀️🏋️♀️& 📿this morn. Fake it till you make it.
4/15⚖️ 131.2 = range
I don’t believe I’ve increased any muscle or decreased any body fat for the last 3+ rounds. I’m hovering around 131 without much, if any body composition change. Way too much stress/lack of sleep. But still, implementing as many de-stressing behaviors possible.
✅🎾🙆♀️🏋️♀️🚶♀️
NSV: Spent two hours in Habit Mechanic and “Younger Next Year” yesterday. Plenty of wisdom there. Habit mechanic is basically workbook… I’m enjoying the contemplative reflective time hence, the CHALLENGE yesterday… #WHEN.WHY.WEIGHT.IS.A.THING
I was able to influence my mood by changing my thought patterns and attempting to eradicate my BAD habits of brooding and ruminating. Ended up having a really good day yesterday.
I’ll give myself a B+ for this round for keeping the scale even… through horrific sleep patterns, high stress and heartbreak. Yes, heartbreak. (No hugs needed or wanted… It’s just life) … I didn’t come anywhere near my “healthy and fit” commitments- but I am starting to see a positive change in handling or detaching from the family situation. The next six weeks will be stormy but I’ll be ready.
I will spend time today planning R257. I will have to be ever vigilant over the next 10 days and pre-plan. Gosh knows I love a plan and I know what is before me.
See y’all in R257. You inspire me.
About me, WOE & Health Journey
****************************
F65, 5’6” married, MawMaw Proud. Clean MAD 🥩. Track macros, kcals, all exercise and NSVs. HW 172lbs in 2010.
WOE since 7/2023: Whole Foods. No processed foods. Animal-based proteins. EGGS, Beef, pork, chicken, seafood, venison and grass-fed whey protein. I count macros & kcals - always will. (Since portion control is my issue). Keto is high-fat but I’m now leaning lower healthy animal fats with leaner proteins. I had paralyzing IBS for 20 years. My mother was diagnosed with celiac’s disease in her 50’s. Following her lead, I eliminated wheat, oat, barley, and rye several years ago…. Dairy? Hard cheese, HWC and butter - an occasional Greek yogurt. Vegetables destroy my digestive system… I love vegetables, but when I splurge, I pay for it for a few days… I do enjoy berries, lemons, limes. Avocados are my weakness. Enjoy a piece of dark chocolate on occasion. Generally, I eat btw noon and 6 pm. (IF18/6). Alcohol? Used to be a social drinker and would enjoy a good martini/scotch or Paloma at home while cooking dinner. NO MORE. Root of many evils. Primarily, the destruction of will power and the enemy of optimal choices. I’d rather journey toward my best-self. I haven’t given up alcohol completely, but I enjoy it sparingly on special occasions. This is me. I finally feel terrific.

Logging Trend Weight
Goals:
- Plan food daily and work the plan.
- Fast 12 hours dinner to breakfast.
- Do 30 minutes of dedicated exercise 5 days a week.
4/6 - 215 - Sleep issues and night eating associated with insomnia are my biggest focus. Its pushed me to gain so much weight in the last year. Very hard habit to break.
4/7 - 213.9 - Clearly a drop in water weight but I'll take it. Worked the plan well yesterday through dinner. However, I did eat a protein bar in the wee hours, so I had to restart my 12 hour fasting window over.
4/8- 213.3 -Lifted some weights, lots of steps, eating on point with a lot of veggies and protein. Still struggling with eliminating the night snacking.
4/9 - 213.2- Eclipse party. No alcohol. Stayed within calorie range but not the healthiest foods. Lot of steps and outside much of the day. Slept better.
4/10 - 212.9 - Perfect day yesterday and slept through night. Lots of veggies and protein and no food off plan.
4/11 - 212.8 - Okay day - no breakfast; lentil chicken bowl for lunch but added a small brownie; chicken nachos for dinner. Not the healthiest overall but within calories. Hard to get to sleep, but then slept well. Did have a protein bar in the evening.
4/12 - 213 - Busy day at work, catered lunch and dinner and drinks out. Stayed reasonable but not perfect. Bump up on scale.
4/13 -DNW
4/14 - DNW - (Distracting weekend)
4/15 - 212.5 - Snacked more than I would like over the weekend, but two nights of uninterrupted sleep was good. Makes a difference.

Thank you so very much for responding. I deeply appreciate your reflection & honesty. Our journeys are different yet the same in many ways.
The “Every Monday starting a new diet” “body comparisons” “binge eating” …. Butt jokes, family 💩 dysfunction… Secrets, Lies…. Shame… Pretty clear many issues start VERY early. TRUE!
I’m learning that BAD choices stem from deeply engrained perhaps life-long BAD habits (bad choices). (Throwing nice words away now). Truly, self-destructive choices. (Not -self-sabotage). And each of us (I) have the power to identify and change those behaviors that keep us (me) stuck.Hard stuff. Me: fake it till I make it!
Hope, strength & determination!

I'm Crystal! I am aiming for 1200 calories/day, less than 90 carbs and low sugar. Recently added more protein to my diet and walking on most days.
4/12 171.7 Almost the weekend. We will be going turkey hunting in the morning. I enjoy being out in nature this time of the year and we will be doing lots of walking. Only thing that I'll need to watch is hubby likes to go out to eat after lol. I have been making better choices at restaurants though so I will plan to eat as healthy as I can.
@Sweetzyd did you ever mention how the turkey hunt went?3 -
@Chapter_3 #WHEN.WHY.WEIGHT.IS.A.THING
My mother put my first diet weight chart up when I was 11, hidden in the broom closet of our kitchen. That's also when I learned to hide candy and snacks.
My sister (who is 15 years older) struggled with obesity (still does) and had to lose 50 lbs to enter nursing school. I think my mother (stick straight, tall and thin) was worried that I was headed down the same road. I probably was, but the fact that I got a bra and my period that same year may have had something to do with the changes in my body she thought was "fat". By mid-high school I was on swim team and had the appropriate eating disorder, trying to look like a Mary Quant ad (remember her?)
It's been a rollercoaster since- highs after first year of college; first baby then 2 and 3; high pressure job in my 40s, then covid. Divorce was an all-time low (re-emerge eating disorder) followed by the financial crash in the mid 2000's. Stress eating and stress not eating.
Lessons learned? By 11 I was ashamed of how I looked- and shame should NEVER be part of this. Learning to appreciate who I am and how I look has been a struggle, finding self-love and self-acceptance is my real goal- numbers on the scale be damned (I'm only partly successful )
Thanks for asking the question- it was important to remember as we end this round....

This is my posting format….

I will take this scale reading after my German feast last night at the German American Society. I even had a piece of German Chocolate cake. (is that even really German?) Even so, my calorie budget was busted by only a little bit. How many times can I write the word German?
Thanks @quiltingjaine for setting it up the round. This one takes us to Tax Day. Our last entry should be postmarked by midnight.
4/7: 224
/logged; Exercised; 45 oz water fiasco/
This is the residual effect of the past two days of too much salt and not enough water. Out shopping with DW yesterday and we decided to stop for some Vietnamese food. I had a “small” bowl of Pho. It was actually huge. Though very reasonable in calories, it was very high in sodium. And delicious.
Did some nervous noshing during basketball games.
My exercise was mowing the grass, hauling yard waste, plus some functional lifting of boat batteries. Those batteries get heavier every year.
4/8: 223
/logged food; exercised; 75 oz water/
Maybe I can eventually get back to my starting weight this round. Yesterday I was very good. If I can do two good days back to back…
4/9: 224.0
/logged; exercised; 66 oz water/
Though I met my food goals with calories, the specifics were not good. Who thinks a “breakfast skillet” at a restaurant is a good idea anyway? Come on Jeff!
Yesterday’s highlight was the total eclipse that traversed the US. What a creation we live in! We are a 4-hour drive away from the path of totality, so we passed on that experience. Traffic promised to be a bear. Even so, the sun was reduced to a tiny “fingernail clipping” at our location. Still pretty light outside, but kind of dingy and gloomy feeling. We had zero cloud cover so we could see it all with our special glasses.
4/10: 222.2
/logged; exercised; 75 oz water/
OK, just a hair under the starting weight for the round. The past two weather days have been glorious!
4/11: 221.6
/logged; exercised; 64 oz water/
I just can’t seem to ingest enough water…
Rotary lunch today. It’s a minefield because the caterer does a fantastic job. There are always good choices available if I desire to be healthy. Always a good salad and fruit. The unhealthy choices are very tempting usually, such as dessert or some salty savory starch dish.
4/12: 220.2
/logged; exercised; 64 oz water/
Well, what do you know, I reached goal number four. Can I use this as a catalyst for further change? Or will it give me an excuse to cheat a little bit since I “have been so good?” I guess it depends on the condition of my self esteem seasoned with wisdom. Probably a little bit of both catalyst and cheating.
Fun fact: the last time I weighed this amount was around September 21, 2023. Scale reading popped back up right after that. I MUST keep my eyes on my OGW, and not get complacent.
Easier said than done.
4/13: 219.6
4/14: 219.8
/logged; exercised; 60 – 70 oz water/
Missed posting yesterday. You would think I would want to get on here a brag ASAP. Ha! I managed to cobble a few good days in a row, and on a weekend no less. I would love to end this round under 220, but I am so close to the line my body functions will likely decide. And, that’s ok.
I just need to leave the jar of peanuts in the pantry while I sit and watch the Masters golf tournament final round.
3/26: 222.4
Starting weight on day before this round.
4/15: 219.4
/logged; exercised; 70 oz water/
I can’t seem to get my water goal accomplished, but this has been a good round despite that. I think it helps me to get outside and move around.
Also it helps to steer clear of the pantry and fridge if possible. Out of sight, out of mind, wins the day for me. If it is within reach I will be performing bicep curls, hand to mouth. That is why buffets are bad for me.
#WHEN.WHY.WEIGHT.IS.A.THING?
I was a super skinny child. Very active in sports and tall for my age. Had to feed the furnace, and it was a race at the dinner table to get to “seconds.” We had no sense of what the right foods to eat were in my family. Just wolf it down… And, food became a major reward and celebration focus for us.
Then I got older and less active. Engaged in the pursuit of my profession which involved a lot of sitting for long hours at a drafting table. But, I still loved to eat. My body type (we all have different types) gathered excess fat in the face, neck and around the waste. Legs and butt not so much. I went from Zues to Buda. Ha! Decided to do something about it when I hit 250# and my clothes looked “painted on.” The MFP app has really helped me be mindful. But it is an up and down battle due to my hungry pie hole. I am a long way from reaching my normal BMI, but if I did people would ask if I had cancer. (I don’t trust BMI)
To this day, I love to eat.
See you all next round!

I like to track averages due to my wild fluctuations. For the same reason, I like to weigh daily so I can see the lows from time to time. It gives me hope.6 -
