I've had a very interesting and informative couple of days, medical-wise myself. ☺️
Turns out the residual mild numbness on the outside of my lower left leg/foot, that has persisted for months, is the result of a pinched nerve, and I did NOT have Bursitis last August, I had aggravated this pinched nerve at the very base of my spine (per neurologist yesterday) or actually my tailbone (per chiropractor today)! Great to have a proper diagnosis!!
It was so weird, as I do not have back pain, just some stiffness in lower back (but I have never been flexible) and sore if you really press on it, but that just doesn't happen in the course of everyday living 😂
Its not from injury, just congenital mild spine curvature and sway back, but the chiropractor is going to help me put it to rights again by opening up some space. Hallelujah 🙌
Weight loss still slowly progressing, started to put down that 2nd 5 gallon water bottle lol. My goal is to put it down fully by my 65th birthday next March...
Which reminds me @ridiculous59, my son turns 40 next year when I turn 65, isn't that funny? So I told him about your special Mother/Son plans, and while we will not be doing a canoe trip, we might go to Vegas or something. You have inspired us 😘5 -
Hello everyone, I too have medical issues but don't know what it is. Waiting for my Dr to call me. I think it's respiratory3
-
@BCLadybug888 Glad to be your inspiration....though I'm not sure I'm worthy of it haha I have had this canoe trip on my bucket list for YEARS. My son and I aren't doing the whole circuit, just a 4-day portion of it. There are a couple in town, both in their 80's, and they still canoe the full circuit regularly. I also see them out cross country skiing all the time in the winter. They are MY inspiration 🙂 My son is an outdoorsy guy. Lots of hiking, fishing, hunting, and time in the bush. It would never have entered his mind to suggest a trip to Vegas for our birthdays 🤣🤣3

@sadiesue215b HI, "Over 60s"! This is my first day. I'm so glad to find this group. I'm 74. I live in a very small town in Nevada, called Hawthorne. We have a population of approximately 3,000. Hawthorne is located 20 miles from Walker Lake and is between Reno (135 miles away) and Las Vegas (314 miles). Basically, we live in the middle of a high desert.5

hi. i’m really new and not sure i can ever find my way back here, but i’d like to connect for support and accountability. i’m 72, in florida. can you see me?1
-
@KeriA forgive me if i’m doing this wrong but i’m so new i haven’t figured out how to comment! is this how?
you sound like me! i’m 72, retired from art teaching in june of 2019 (just in time to escape covid!), spent the first year getting my retirement ducks in a row, then we went into lockdown! i live alone and spent eons in my house, but only found i liked it. now, five years out, i’m in the middle of a multi year home redec/declutter/reno!
amazingly i have no diagnosed health problems, take no meds, but need to keep it that way by finally getting my body together and sticking with it. i’m coming over here from very successfully tracking food on fitbit until they trashed that and made it unuseable, and i still can’t figure out the vast translation difference between this, fitbit, and an online energy expend counter…!1 -

I use Fitbit to track steps and exercise (and sleep!), but I use this app, MFP, to track food and water. Fitbit links with MFP, so I can see steps and extra activity calories burned in my food diary. I find they work very well in tandem.1 -
Hi everyone. Just joined, I'm also in 60s and my goal is really to eat healthier, less fat, less sugar and lose a couple of kgs as well.2

Hi everyone- I’m not quite 60 yet (57 and climbing) but am enjoying the comments in this thread! I have low metabolism, thyroid issues and just started hormone replacement due to horrible joint pains. I thought I had an auto-immune disease like rheumatoid arthritis, or Lyme disease… all ruled out. My PA immediately said to look at hormones due to menopause. I had no female in my life that I remember ever having this issue. I’m only about 2 months into the journey and it’s helping. That’s when I started back on MFP. I’m not extremely heavy but want to stay healthy. I had a gastric sleeve in 2018 and maintained weight for 5 years. This past year with the joint pains, among other irritability issues (lol), I gained 18 pounds. I teach students with special needs (K-2 severe), so I’m not sedentary. All the body changes are new and weight loss much harder. I have managed to lose 9 pounds since the end of May and my success story is taking a family cruise a few weeks ago (26 of us) and only gaining 1.5 pounds! I did eat and drink whatever I wanted in moderation. I hope it’s ok to post and participate in this group. The health issues and weight struggles are real. Thank you!4

@BCLadybug888 I’m glad you pointed out the issues with Fitbit and MFP. I have considered getting a Fitbit, but haven’t yet. Good to know I can link info. I’ve been using Under Armor app to track my walks and then posting in MFP under cardio for calories burned. Any other suggestions are appreciated!0

Howdy y'all. I'm coming around my second time. This time with fire and a desire to get back on track. January 2023 I had to do something about my weight. I was at my heaviest 256lbs. I had to change my eating style. It took me 18 months to get where I am at now. I currently weigh 180lbs. I am looking for some FitBuddies. I sure would appreciate the help5

This is exactly how I do it too. My Fitbit is three years old though and I'm not sure what to replace it with when it finally stops working. I love its simplicity, but google/Fitbit is changing everything.so not sure whether to stick with it or try something else, like a basic Garmin.

My son gave me his fitbit some time ago because he doesn't use it but I'm having a problem getting the app for it so I haven't used it. Do you have to pay for the app? So far it has a fee0
-
@Evamutt, love my Fitbit!
The app is free, but similar to MFP there is a premium membership also available, which I do not feel the need for.0 -
Hello @clayton510 -'not sure how you got past the doorman, but since you're here...make yourself at home 😘, you can be the young'un!
Welcome @58marianoz, you have done very well, brava.2 -
RIP to a real legend.
I know this group will remember Richard Simmons
He preached exercise, and common sense diet choices, but he also preached self acceptance and kindness.

i also have a smart scale connected to fitbit. tomorrow is my first weigh-in since coming over to mfp and i’ll be interested to see if fitbit sends the weight it gets from vsync over to mfp, or if i will need to remember to log it myself. i’ve been on program for a week, but i’ll consider that first weight my actual starting one. gotta start somewhere.
2 -
as a follow up to my last comment, the scale seemingly did not forward the weigh-in info to fitbit, BUT mfp *does* show this morning’s info. mfp is not connected to the scale so it must have gotten it through fitbit, there’s no other route. but no new info is showing up on the fitbit app!
i give.up.1 -
as a follow up to my last comment, fitbit doesn’t show this morning’s weigh-in info but mfp does. so we know the scale is transmitting and info is flying around, fitbit is simply DOA except for energy tracking. i have no reason to ever go to their now unreliable app! google took a great product and simply borked it.0
-
@elithea175, so strange that scale updated MFP via Fitbit, but not Fitbit itself! I always record my weight here on MFP manually, and it then updates on Fitbit, but not using a smart scale.0

Happy Sunday, Went to one of our grandson's birthday parties yesterday. It was so hot, I stayed inside but could still watch the kids keep cool playing on the water slide. My son made hamburgers & hot dogs & potato salad & cut up fruit. He has these warming metal pans with lids (don't know what you call them) but uses them when ever there's a get together. I thought he did sometime clever yesterday- he wrapped each hamburger & hot dog with the bun in foil so all you had to do was take one out, unwrap it & add condiments if you want. everything stayed pretty clean & it was organized. I'm tired today but did manage to take the dogs for short walk with husband & pick up bunch of leaves in backyard after church before it got too warm.I'm not cooking dinner today but am cooking food to add to the dog's kibble and I saw a recipe for zucchini balls (in air fryer) I'm planning to try. I love zucchini & always buy some whenever I go to the grocery store & eat it many different ways. Hope it turns out good5

Hello all, my daughter came over after church and we went to de Dutch Pannekoek (very thin large pancakes) for brunch and I had a savoury one made with onion, deBakon, tomatoes and Dutch cheese (Edam I think). You can have them made sweet or savoury - so good! I had plotted what to have yesterday and planned my diary for today accordingly.
Then we went to a shady Park to sit and read under the trees, but I did go for a short walk. Was breezy today and almost cool in the deep shade sitting, but as soon as I ventured out for my walk it was broiling in the sun!
We had a pedicure appointment at 4pm, so I have pretty toes again 🙂. There was a flower shop that also sells houseplants next to the nail salon, which is sort of my kryptonite, and brought a new one home, love the foliage 😍
Yesterday my main focus was watching Dune part 2, which took me about 6 hours as it is long and I kept pausing to do things...the only reason I was watching it was because my SiLaw had highly recommended Dune, and lent me the DVD to watch, which I watched but was not completely enamoured with...it was a very long movie - and I had been really irritated nearing the end, as I realized there must be another one to watch since the story was NOT wrapping up! And then to find out it hadn't been released yet!! So you can imagine my feelings as I entered the 5th hour of part 2 with the dawning realization that the story was not likely to wrap up thus time either! Aargh. Bring on part 3 I guess...
My weight has been pretty steady all week and I have maintained my deficit, looking for a drop soon.🤞
Keep on keeping on folks!2 -
@BCLadybug888 Very pretty plant! We joke at school that I have a bad aura because I can’t keep any plants alive, not even air plants… lol! I love looking at them though, and I take the students to the garden area a lot. It’s really calming.
I went for my daily walk. I try to get in at least one hour or 3 miles outside (treadmill on bad weather days). I bought resistance bands at advice of nutritionist but haven’t done a workout yet. She said we lose 10% of our muscle mass every decade and cardio isn’t enough. Given my labs I should live another 30 years, but she said I won’t be able to care for myself because my muscle won’t support my body. That’s scary… they have a machine (can’t remember the name) that measures everything internally… body fat, muscle, weight, etc… so that’s my goal in the coming weeks…. Work on strength training. Doing well logging food and staying within calories, but still struggling a bit with macros.3 -
Thank you for all the comments about Fitbit… seems there are issues with Google. Might wait to get one to see if it improves.1

I have a brown thumb too.
But now I can grow a few plants - including a couple orchids that I have kept alive for almost a year - because I have been using an app called Planta.
Just FYI. I have found it well worth the small yearly fee. $35. Less expensive than a bunch of dead plants.

I'm 61 and tracking calories as a way to help me lose 10 pounds before I hike the Alta Via 1 in the Dolomites of northern Italy in 6 weeks. I could do the hike with my weight today, but I will enjoy it much more -10 lbs.
Add me if you want to share motivation.3 -
Good Morning, I haven't posted in awhile but I have lost 6 pounds in that time. I joined a CSA so I am trying some fresh veggies that I have never tried. That is a lot of fun. I also joined the Y and I am trying some new exercise classes. I was bored with the gym and not giving it my best effort. I am also doing online cardio videos. I find that it is easier to move my body, I am less stiff and sore since making these changes.6

@BCLadybug888 sorry to keep bombarding you but you seem to be the only one in the whole place who answers anything! after spending days getting mfp/fitbit/scale set up, injust got a place in noom’s pre-diabetes program. i got it to connect with fitbit but can’t figure out how to connect noom with mfp. i read on reddit that you can connect via apple health, but i can’t get mfp to connect to apple health either, it just sticks on the connecting screen.
do you have any clue the best was to avoid having to double entry food logging? or know where i might look? mfp help is useless!1 -
Wow, it's great to see so many new people joining this thread, and also previous participants coming back to post again!
@Elithea175, I'm glad you've joined us. I'm sorry not to be able to help with your Fitbit connection issues, but I don't even have a Fitbit (I'm a Garmin gal, but don't link it to MFP). I see you've already joined the Fitbit user group here on MFP, which would be about all a Fitbit-ignoramus like me could suggest. I hope you find a solution!
@BCLadybug888, I'm glad to hear you're getting some answers on the medical front about your pinched nerve. I hope the chiropractor will help you improve it quickly! That's a beautiful new houseplant, too. I have a lot of houseplants, but mixed results. A couple of my orchids seem to have given up recently after several good years, and even had rebloomed sometimes. Right now, I have a nasty aphid outbreak among one group of plants, which is discouraging.
@Evamutt, I hope you get some answers soon - hopefully reassuring ones - about the respiratory condition. Keep us posted, if you feel up to it?
@maxiet1, the high desert area of Nevada is beautiful. I lived one summer in Sparks (suburb of Reno) decades back, but never ranged as far as Hawthorne.
@Clayton510, as far as I know, no one checks IDs at the door here, so welcome to the thread! Glad to hear the HRT is helping you.
@58MarianoZ, that's an excellent loss so far. I hope you keep participating here, because I'm sure you'll have insights that can help others make progress.
@MargaretYakoda, I hadn't heard about Richard Simmons. Only 76! That's very sad. When I was first starting to be more active in my later 40s, I used his "Dancing to the Oldies" aerobics videos, since I needed low impact given joint issues. I liked that his ensemble of dancers included regular people, not just fitness or dance pros, and that they were all sizes and ages.
@jdoe0512, your Alta Via 1 hike sounds inspiring. Maybe give us your impressions after you do it? I'm sure you're right about even 10 pounds making a difference in how comfortable the hike will be.
@1poundatax, good to see you back, and to hear that you've made some nice progress. Greater mobility is a wonderful thing. I know I should follow your good example and work more on that.
Not much new is happening in my world. Physical therapy is resolving the rib pain I was having, and we're now working on getting my shoulder blade moving better over my ribs in hopes that one rib that keeps going out will be persuaded to stay in. At least now it's just the shoulder blade making crunchy noises, and the rib area is rarely uncomfortable anymore.
I'm still rowing regularly, but we've had some interruptions due to the tail end of hurricane Beryl causing heavy rains and thunderstorms here. My heart goes out to those who experienced Beryl at fuller force: We had some localized flooding, but no true disaster.
I hope everyone is well and making good progress!

Forgive me if I already told ya'll but I went to the Dr & he ordered chest xray, labs & UA tests & they all came back good so couldn't find anything but one of our sons says they're having the same symptoms so I don't know but I did feel much better Friday & did many "chores" I haven't done in a while like mowing the backyard, moping etc but was tired on Saturday (birthday party day)& Sunday. Today I'm kinda tired but my legs are sore. Went for walk with dogs then took them to dog park but I didn't walk around much like I usually do because my legs are sore. I don't know whats going on. So today is when I'm going to make the zucchini balls also making chicken thighs in the air fryer oven I bought when our oven didn't work . I don't turn the oven on during the hot summer but the air fryer oven I use because it doesn't let out a lot of heat so I cook more things. I gained 2 lbs. It doesn't sound like much but it makes a difference how my clothes fit, so I'm working on it. It's odd how I was at the lowest range of my maintenance last November & December. I usually gain a few lbs during the winter4
