Week 12 of my bench press triplet protocol, where I started doing 10 triples at 60% of 1RM and every week add 5lb. Any week I fail to complete all 10 triples, the following week will have fewer triples to perform. Repeat until I am down to a single triple, then recalculate 1RM and see if it's changed.
Today was at 250, or 85% of 1RM. Had to happen eventually, the day when I failed to complete all 10 triplets. For safety sake I called it after eight sets, the last one with a spotter who almost had to step in and help me finish the last rep. Per the rules of the protocol, next week I will do a max of 8 sets, even if I somehow have the energy to power through and feel I can do more. I do not anticipate that happening, though.1 -
So... Quads are slowly coming in!
And pullups are my nemesis... Working on negatives and holds.
Maybe one day I'll get back there!

Good day everyone, and sorry i have not been aroudn for a while.
Back injury started end of May, and after that i have had 3,5 weeks vacation from work, in which i have not worked out at all.
Have my equipment with me today, and gonna workout for first time in 6 weeks again (i know i am gonna regret it tomorrow and sunday)
Have to make sure to use light weight and go for high reps, instead of being stubborn and try to do the weight i was doing 6 weeks ago3 -
@Minion_training_program I went bowling with my son the other night, just the two of us spending a little time together in friendly competition. Once upon a time I bowled multiple leagues every week, was borderline good enough to think about going pro (if I do say so myself). But upon moving to my current home, all my equipment was stolen from my car, and between the cost of replacing it plus odd hours of my job I let slide rejoining a league immediately, and before I knew it it's been twenty years since my last regular league. The family has gone 3-4 times over the years to bowl, but always for a single game at a time.
But last night was a full 3-game series, where my son thought he would whoop his old man's butt given how he's been bowling on the regular with his friends and he was always top dog. He stopped thinking that after the first game, and after the series he ruefully admitted maybe I was the better bowler, rusty as I was, after I outscored him by 181 on the night with every game at least 49 pins better.
He may have been impressed, but all I could focus upon was how rusty my game had become. True, I was using house equipment include a ball which didn't fit my fingers right (shocking how bad most of the house ball hole arrangements were!), but my average speed was a full 3 mph (4.8 kph) slower and way too nose-on with the head pin, one of the reasons I recorded 5 splits and only 10 strikes on the night. My only saving grace was my spare game was on point, converting two of those splits and not leaving any other open frames, but without being able to string the strikes together I had no chance to get a good score.
By the third game my grip was starting to give out, leading to a lot of erratic swings and my lowest score of the night, but all told I had a great time (scoring a good 25+ per game below my old average notwithstanding). I could feel the old fire rekindled, and my son and I may have to make this a regular thing until I can justify the expense of replacing my old equipment and convince my wife to join me in a league once again. She may complain that her injuries from the car crash a few years ago will limit her, but I'll just appeal to her sense of social contact and calling it a "weekly date night".
Anyway, @Minion_training_program I just wanted you to know I was reminded of you on the night, and wanted to share the reawakening of my love of bowling (and realization of just how far I've fallen lol).

I organize i summer league each year since 2017, and this week i have had one of my better nights (after 3 weeks vacation and no bowling)

PS this is LaenTalk app, great app to keep track of your scoring and statistics (it is used world wide, and a lots of bowling alley's use it, you just need to sign up and then you can see if there is a alley near you that uses it as well)
I started using the paid version, so you can add arsenal of balls as well, and track more than 9 games at once.0 -
A 718 series is super solid. Sure trumps my 551 the other night (when I used to average well over 600).
And I am well aware a 600 average is NOT good enough to go pro. My belief, however, was that if I was averaging that as an amateur, if I focused on making a full-time go at it, who knows what could have happened.0 -

Was this during house league you averaged 200+?
Because even though its not bad, i have seen so many people, especially from USA, scoring high on house patterns, but on sport pattern they could not even score above 140.
There is such a huge difference in house league oil pattern and when playing sport.
That national championship i played little over a month ago was sport pattern as well, and while i was scoring pretty good the first day, the finals was a different story. I did not score really bad or anything, but had barely made 190 average that day. Because weather conditions were different, the lane were not reacting the same way1 -

Entirely possible, as the owner of the lanes was a former pro who could bowl a 300 with either hand and whom I considered both a friend as well as a coach. As I recall, my tournament scores were almost identical to my league scores at that time.
Home lanes, for league that is, hardly uses sport patterns, because they want to have people scoring high during league, so they come back.
Biggest difference between recreation pattern and sport pattern is the ratio, which basically means margin of error.
I have never been to USA, but from stories of my pro shop owner who comes there 2 times a year (for Bowlexpo) he mentioned that the house pattern over there is a lot easier compared to here, and he with a average of 200, was signing up for a little tournament while he was there. Drilled a ball on the spot, and shot 250+ average. And he is definatly not the best bowler he admits.
He said his margin was about 10 boards wide, while even league patterns here have maybe 4-5 boards margin.
When i was having a clinic over here with a few PBA players, among which was Parker Bohn III, he also said that patterns here played so much different, even if it was just house shots.
He had trouble shooting 200+ when we played against him and the other PBA's (Sean Rash, Jason Sterner and John van Hees)
I can also say after that day, that i beated 3 PBA players in a 1on1 match (didn't play against John though) with a 236, 224 and 2091 -
So friday was my first workout again after 6 weeks (last was May 31 i saw in my notebook)
And een though i only did Bench, core training, leg curl and a attempt at assisted pull ups, i am still sore.
But no rest for the wicked, going back at it again today
Friday started with benchpress again, today gonna give a go at Deadlifts2 -

The game has changed a lot over last decade, just look at all the 2handers nowadays
Even lane conditions change, they have now fire and ice oil patterns, lane material changed, hard wood is a no go now, and you barely see that anymore, and the string technology is coming up now a lot as well
I am still not a huge fan of it, but that has more to do with the sound it makes, rather than scores. If you have the newer versions of string, it reacts almost the same as freefall, and they tested it, and scores changed only by 0.6 pins over 10.000 played games.0 -
So the bottom line from what I'm hearing is my memory of how good I used to be is pretty much a fantasy thinking I had a prayer to go pro. Sounds like I made the right decision to go college instead!0

Today was at 255, or 86.5% of 1RM. I stopped after five sets (when the protocol said to try for eight) because my form was retched and my depth nowhere near where it should be. I also question whether this protocol is actually helping me to improve, considering I was doing 5x3 triples at 275 before but now I'm struggling with triples at 20 pounds lighter.
So I'm calling an end to this little experiment after 3 months, calling it an interesting diversion but will return to the 5x5 standard I was using before which had successfully raised my bench 1RM by 10 pounds. Let's see if I can squeak out another 5 pounds to top 300, or another 20 to get that 315. Not ready to call it a pipe dream yet, but obviously my goal of hitting it by my birthday (now 5 weeks past) didn't happen, so let's settle in for a longer haul goal of hitting it before I turn 50 in three years.

haha, well you will probably never know. Like you said it was some time ago, and coditions were different back then, not sure how high scoring was back in those day's on house shot patterns nation wide. I just now know, that scoring 220 average on house pattern nowadays means not much if you have a lot of room to miss. If you are very consistant in what board to lay down the ball, place at the arrows, and breakpoint at the end of the oil, then you are a good player.
In my old bowlinghouse, which used old style oil machines, and lay down patterns based on wick machines, the room to miss was about 1 board, so you really needed to play very accurate to score high.
In my last season there i managed to average 188 over the season, with maybe 10 200+ games in a season, so pretty consistent.
I thought of myself not that good at that time.
Then i moved to my current bowling house, and the margin of error was about 5 boards on that pattern, and first night there, i scored a 761 over 3 with a 233, 249 and 279
The weeks after that i kept scoring 220+ on that specific pattern, which was recreation pattern and averaged 215 by the end of the season.
All because i was used to not have any margin of error, it made me very accurate, so on a oil pattern with lots of margin of error, i could easily throw 6 or 7 strikes in a row.
Now i am more used to the margin of error, which kinda made me more lazy, altough my spare game is still pretty good, so i can still score 200+ on a normal night, an d230+ on a good night (see my scores of last week).
Lane conditions and consistency are 2 major factors of bowling nowadays, no matter what style you have.
Although the 2 handers seem to have a bit more margin, hence you see so many 2 handers nowadays if they got enough rev rate. My rev rate 1 handed is only 320-250. My rev rate 2 handed (i played 2 seasons 2 handed) is 540-5700 -

@Minion_training_program I have no clue what my rev rate is. I just know that I was taught bowling by an old-school purist, and I cringe every time I see somebody using the two-handed style. I can intellectually acknowledge its potential for high scores through stringing strikes, but in my limited experience watching it also seems to lead towards more difficult spares.
@kinetixtrainer2 thanks for the support. I allowed my bad day benching at a lower weight to mentally dissuade me from looking forward to the higher weight. I think I also need to crack down on my food intake again, in terms of actually eating more...I've been eating at maintenance for a few weeks, and my weight hasn't budged, meaning the muscular gains I was experiencing have likely also come to a screeching halt. But maybe not...at my current weight of 203, a 315 bench would be 1.53x BW, where actual strongmen are benching over 2x BW, so maybe more muscle isn't the issue, I just need to grow stronger, lol.1 -

Well, again a bummer and no workouts for a few day's
Last night with bowling, i went down to the ground.
For some reason y right knee refused, like it locked all of a sudden, and i fell down to the approach pretty hard on my knee and side.
Pretty bruised, so gonna give it time to heal before going to the gym.
Still gonna do my home core workouts, just make sure to take it easy on that as well1 -

I'm actually ambidextrous, though I've only ever practiced bowling righty. My old coach bowled most of the time righty, but he could bowl either hand and usually went lefty just to hit the 10 pin. Would be interesting to see how well I did lefty one day...
Anyway, the reason I ask was you said your right knee gave out, and I was trying to picture how it would work. If you were a lefty and your right plant knee gave out that's one thing, but it's an entirely different mental picture for the right knee of a righty bowler to give out.0 -

I know in current lane coditions, when playing tournaments, the left side kinda gives a advantage. Would probably apply for house leagues as well, since transition is less, so longer to play the same line
And yeah, on my slide, so with my left foot, my right leg somehow gave out, before i could swing it to the left for my balance, so instead it kinda pulled me to the right and to the ground...i feel it must have looked funny

Slowly pushing toward my new Deadlift goal of 350lb.
Today was a new PR of 320lbs! (a small 5lb one, but STILL) I was tired and sore going in
If I was fresh, probably could have done 325. Might have been able to get it today, but figured I'd not be arrogant...

WONDERFUL deadlift video! All the more impressive when I remember just how bloody tall you are, making it a LONG way to pull the weight. Honestly, have you thought about maybe trying sumo deadlifts instead, allowing the torso to stay a little more upright with just slightly less range of motion to traverse?1

Each to their own. I personally prefer sumo because of my lower back, but am always terrified I'm going to drop the weight on my foot, lol.1
