Today is BRAIN day! Exercise your brain! I like playing Words With Friends. If you’d like to challenge me, PM me! Also Mango and Penuche Fudge. I love Penuche and used to make it, but no more…. Too much sugar!! I’ll buy a Mango today as I haven’t had one in a long time!

Ginny - I'd probably want a retirement facility that had a gym, clubhouse - a place to get together with friends. And walking friendly. Gated. Hope the right spot shows up for you. Glad you enjoyed your visit with the grands.
Beth - many hugs. Hope your mom is closer to being in a better facility. Has to be worrisome. You are a great daughter to keep close tabs on her.
Margaret - good job on the weight loss and even greater job on your journey toward better health. Do you have a weight goal in mind or are you just letting your body establish a healthy set point? That's kind of where I'm at. My goal was my clothing fitting better, and I'm pretty much there.
Annie - I'm ready to go back to watching health videos on YouTube and leave the news alone again. I just received the ballot for the primaries in our state. There are over 20 people running for governor, although just a few have really done any campaigning that I'm aware of.
Butler PA rabbit hole stuff from my 911 perspective - please skip if you're tired of the whole she-bang (I don't intend to make this a constant topic of discussion!)... I was intrigued by the recent events in Butler PA, especially the Secret Service (USSS) and likely gaps in surveillance and training. In 1996, President Clinton and VP Gore made a whistle stop in a community close by. I was working at the 911 Center at the time, and the cops stopped in and reported they were told to just do traffic control, the USSS would handle everything else. And they did. The USSS communicated on a radio frequency the 911 Center was unable to monitor, although I recall they could get onto our law channels if they needed to. Very glad that everything is beefed up now for all candidates.
On top of that, different theories have come to light regarding JFK's assassination. I wonder how that investigation would have gone if everyone lining the street would have had cellphones recording everything and everybody... and drones could have been employed to help spot trouble.
Carol - thinking of you this morning. Best wishes on a successful surgery and speedy recovery.
Scam report:Friend T and her DH stopped by yesterday. They told me about an elderly friend and his wife who live in an area with mostly seniors, and who was scammed out of $25,000. This fellow answered a phone call and was told some story that he needed to pay $$ or there would be consequences. The man got scared, came up with the money, put it in a box and set it on the kitchen counter. But something told him it might be a scam and he started calling trusted friends who advised him not to go through with it. Evidently he left the house for a while, and the scammers came to the door. His wife, who is disabled and starting to have memory loss, gave the scammers the box of money. THIS is why I do not answer my landline phone, and let the answering machine filter all calls. Only trusted friends and businesses have my cellphone number. And they use email or messaging to communicate with me most of the time.
It's going to be a GREAT week! I don't have any appointments other than Rosie's annual vet checkup Wednesday morning. Will walk a little with neighbor D tomorrow and see what's new at her house. Diabetes Prevention ZOOM class has been cancelled for this afternoon.
So far this morning I have washed both cars (it's cool and overcast) and might hop on the mower later today when the sun comes out and dries things off a bit.
Make it a fabulous week.

Tonight we had a frittata with 5 eggs. We have enough for sandwiches tomorrow, so we probably ate less than 4. Rather too much feta, but it is delicious. The veggie pile was huge to go in the omelette. Big bunch of asparagus, broccoli, broad beans, peas, scallions, artichokes. We were stuffed, with a few oven chips, (fries).
We always cover most of the plate with veg. Our plates and bowls are v large white china. I think most of you would not believe our veggie portions!
Then it's stewed fruit for dessert, usually with crême fraiche, sometimes Haagen Dass vanilla, and sometimes it's fresh fruit with cheese.
I am lucky to have a husband who loves his veg! Plus he does most of the buying.

Kylia - so glad you had a good time at the car shows, congrats. And I think those kittens have really helped you take a break from thinking about work all the time, you just seem more relaxed.
Heather - did you get the results from your DEXA scan? Perhaps you already mentioned it and I skimmed over it.
Margaret - again, what lovely gardens in your area. Thank you for sharing your visits to them.
Lately, I've been watching reels of K-9's on FB. Mostly the Belgian Malinois. They show them in training, on the job with both the police and in the military. They look a bit different than German Shepherds, but are agile and apparently very intelligent and love to work/stay busy. If I was 30 years younger and had the time and energy, I'd get one.
In the meantime, Rosie the schnauzer is doing a great job for me "on the watch."
Finished mowing, did a little weed eating.

MFP Weekly Check-in July 22, 2024
Debbie in Napa Valley, CA - 149.6 this morning. A tiny bit down from last week but still up 2 pounds from 3 weeks ago.
Barbara on the Southern Oregon Coast - Better than yesterday:
Move: steps 6/7, PT 4/7, dog group, 1 BB&B, 2 line dance and one Zumba class.
Fuel: sugar 5/7, CI<CO 7/7, AF 4/7
Wt today down 2.0 lbs from last week.
Not enough PT. Challenge again this week will be to do some form of PT every day there is no BB&B class.
Rita in Roswell, NM - Today I was down to 172 from starting weight of 186! That’s 16 pounds down! I’m excited! It may be all the work I’m doing to get there, or the Jardiance, or both, but I’ll take it!! Down 4.5 pounds from last week. Seems like a lot but must have been holding on to a lot of water. I am going to the bathroom more often- a side effect of the Jardiance getting rid of all the sugar in my body. Should slow down next week. We will see….
Sue in WA State - I have had a pretty good week. Kept up with exercise. Eating not too bad although still too much sugar. I have days of fatigue caused by sarcoidosis and A-fib and tend to eat more on those days trying to give myself energy. It does not work and I know that but I continue to feed myself thinking it will. Not sure how to get a handle on that.
Lanette SW WA State – weight staying in range. Have added calf stretches and some “knee planks” to my early morning stretch routine. Still house walking and doing the Farmer’s walk, both with 8# weights and also with heavy watering cans outside.

Lanette, We started reading the voters' pamphlet this morning to get ready to fill in our ballots. We have very strong feelings about what we're looking for in our leaders but as we read through the statements from the candidates we found many very entertaining views on what constitutes leadership. We, too, were astonished at how many people had thrown their hats into the ring for governor.
Annie's favourite neighbor has plums from her tree to give away so we paid her a visit on our after lunch walk. Fun for all.
Jake's chemo meds for the second month were delivered today. He has to sign for them so we are all relieved that they arrived safely and he can take his nap.
Ginny, it's so important to know what you want when picking a place to live in retirement. What was important to me was a bit of yard to putter in, a fenced yard so dogs could run around, almost no traffic so dog walking would be safe, a room with no carpet so I can dance, but I have no interest in a gym or social activities. My neighbourhood is perfect for me but probably wouldn't be what you are looking for.

Yum! Had fresh blueberries from our own bushes on my yogurt this morning. Cool and cloudy again today. DD and neighbor took advantage of weather yesterday to clean up scrap piles and take metal to recycling. The pile that was next to the garden shed is now all cleaned up.
Carol - hope you have the best possible outcome with your knee surgery. Be sure you do the prescribed PT.
Heather - sounds like your preparations are moving apace.
Margaret - DD and her best friend looked at going to Bouchart gardens in Victoria, Canada but the entry price has gone up to $80 so they are making other plans.
Everyone take care, Sue in WA

Surprisingly there was no charge to get into the garden. I learned from my cousin if you buy a membership to Missouri Botanical it is good to get you into other Arboretums throughout the country. Perhaps Canada has something like that. I did give a donation to the garden. They were selling root beer floats to support the garden. I just gave them money and did not take the float.3

I had to look that up- Not sure which tickets they were looking at for Butchart Gardens.
Their site says-Price Range$26.80 - $41.50
$80 for the annual pass
I have been there a few times and loved it. I know it wasn't anywhere near that expensive when we went because my parents wouldn't have paid that much
Loved being there at night with all the lights.

Heather, I could write a book on the organizing aides that work and the ones that don’t. I love lazy susans. I have one of the type you recently got, and I love it! I use it on my middle shelf that is very close to the top shelf. I keep containers of yogurt, soft cream cheese, etc. It makes every item accessible, and the rectangular shape exactly fits my shelf. I have a round, more traditional one on the bottom tall shelf and put all my tall bottles there like milk, aloe juice, plain yogurt tub, etc. Then, I have a double decker one with a cut out middle in the cabinet for my vitamins and prescription meds. The cutout in the middle is for the tall bottles of magnesium and ashwagandha.5

Allie - does your brother not drive or have a vehicle, isn’t his own responsibility to get himself to court? Your SIL was a piece of work before it seems she’s still trying to boss.
Michele - one of the schools I was at taught all subjects in French. I can see how they could learn math and science in Spanish.
In my course we learned that the best time to learn a second language is when we are young.
Beth - Hugs to you. Will you get to see your brother while he’s in town as well?
Barbara - I hope you have more of an idea on the tank install today, even a week range would help I’m sure.
Ginny - Those Grands sure have a way of growing on us don’t they. I was talking to my Godchildren’s mom last night and we were discussing how fast the life cycle is
We have downsized twice - when we moved from NB to AB we came with 9 suitcases and a hockey bag. Eventually we managed to get some furniture pieces that meant a lot to me, my China cabinet, hope chest, great grandmothers dresser and other antique pieces of hers. Then some boxes.
The second time we downsized was when we moved in here. Kept most of what we had been able to get from NB.
I will be getting rid of some shelves, a couch and some footstool storage boxes when I get my living room cabinet built and new couch this Fall.
Machka - I am much like you. I do make plans when it involves other people but for the most part I’m a “fly by the seat of my pants” type.
Rebecca - I was wondering this morning if this was going to affect the visit with your sister.
There is OTC meds now for pink eye here in Canada. Made by Polysporin.
I went for a long drive with my friend today to check out a spot that she wants to move her trailer to. I think she’ll be fine there, it’s not something I would be interested in doing in a million years but I’ll support her.
We stopped and grabbed some ground beef and I made burgers when we got home. I took Patches with me and sent a picture to Michaela. Michaela loves Jeb too, the dog in the background.
I didn’t hear from the interview today. Really hoping I hear tomorrow.
I took my table apart today and questioned my own sanity about what to do to prepare it to stain. I ended up going to the local paint store and the owner walked me through what I should do, I bought the stuff and he told me I shouldn’t do it today as it was too hot, the stripper would dry before it had a chance to do its job. So I’ll attempt it tomorrow if it’s cooler.
At least with my table in pieces on the floor I’ll not leave it like this for a long time.
The smoke is terrible here tonight, I can barely see the planes taking off. The town of Jasper has just been put on evacuation notice.

Ginger ... welcome back and congratulations on the weight loss!
Rebecca ... I missed why you are now needed as a sitter, but I'm hoping that you find a routine that works for you while taking care of your grands.
Heather ... sorry to hear about your brother's illness. Had you mentioned to your surgeon that the new hip is hurting? That doesn't seem right to me. Praying for your surgery later this week.
Carol ... praying for a successful surgery and complete recovery tomorrow!
Machka ... you have been incredibly busy!
Facebook ... I've snoozed and unfollowed so many people it's pretty much just me and the ads. And now that Machka has shown me how to manage those, hopefully many of those will change soon too!
Barbara ... yay for finally having water!
Debbie ... keep the pressure on your mother's roommate! Every time you visit remind her of the move out timeline.
I got so far behind that I've forgotten much of what I wanted to comment on.
I continue to be busy with my mom, visiting her every day. She is physically stable, but her cognitive health is a mixed bag. I left her today in tears because apparently she believed the aide and I "yelled" at her when she tried to do something she shouldn't have. No one actually "yelled" ... we were just frightened by her near fall. I tried to reassure her that no one was angry or mad at her, just worried about her getting hurt, but it wasn't getting through. Sigh. Tomorrow is her 93rd birthday and my husband and I will visit in the morning and then my brother is driving in with some of his family to bring in her lunch and visit in the afternoon.
My eating habits have tanked and my recent blood work shows numerical evidence of that. I have a doctor's appointment on Tuesday to discuss my lab results. I know that I have to re-tool my food choices and restructure my day to allow time to prepare healthy meals. Exercise has become non-existent. I have to make changes now before things get out of hand.
Beth near Buffalo
Oh their last sitter there were issues. They came home to their 10 month old with two pretty pronounced scratches on his face. Caused by her 3 yr old. Then my son and dil looked at video and she is seen kind of dropping the 10 month on the floor, he cries. That was the end of that! My son called us the next morning and was up to Whidbey that afternoon! Athena and son stayed the night and I drove back to their home. I'm starting my second week. Its been exhausting but I will miss them all when I stay at my sisters this next weekend. Hopefully everyone will be healthy enough to go visit with my eldest sister. Currently Athena has pinkeye.

Today’s gratitude: the encouragement of others in the BB&B class.
Annie what you said to Machka about caregivers needing to be flexible. ((hugs)).
Barbie “…the things I chose to do or buy make me happy or fill a need…”, yes this!
Pip, yup, guilty
Tracey Brava for consulting an expert about your table refinishing project. Patches and Jeb. Hope the weather cools and air clears soon.
Ginger, Kay, Sue, Terri, always good to see you posting.
Carol prayers continue for swift, pain-free-as-possible recovery.
Plans. Seems I only have energy to do one or two things a day. BBB and line dance class wipe me out. Today’s “plans”: to cut Joe’s hair, telemedicine phone call follow up for thyroid results. In between times try to squeeze in a little laundry, a little plant watering, a little Tumble grooming. If energy holds, open line dancing tonight. We’ll see ;}
Later, lighter, lovelies!

- Crossing fingers and toes for you re the job.
I've just been for my blood group test. I questioned whether I needed a fourth one, but the nurse said they were also testing for antibodies.
I dressed in Italian style, in black with gold accessories. It amuses me.
My grandchildren go to a bilingual school. English/Spanish. Bea has a perfect accent!
I haven't installed my rotating shelf yet, but will get to it this afternoon.
John and I thought crushed cauliflower with crême fraiche and parmesan would be nice with herby roasted chicken thighs. I ordered 2 packets on my last Waitrose. When I opened one frozen packet, I found chicken wings, which John hates. We are going to eat them, but I will email them to get a refund. The other packet is thighs.
Left over fritatta for lunch. Yum.

Good morning beautiful ladies!
Sue I am struggling with sugar too. Evil stuff!
I hope to dye my hair today while my dad is at his class.

Have a lovely day, my friends! May you be happy, healthy, safe and free!

I am putting this in a spoiler because it may be too much information!Hello Ladies! I am thankful my knee replacement is over and the dr said it looked good. We got to the surgery center at 7 Am and was out by 2:30. All of the employees were very, very kind and did excellent jobs getting me through it. My only problem was that I came out of the anesthesia before the nerve block was over. The knee hurt so bad that I cried but they gave me more pain meds. Was able to use the walker and went up/down the steps (good because our car garage is in the basement). After I was feeling better, I used my cane instead of the walker and now I am icing. Will just follow all the directions and hope for continued healing with no blood clots.
Margaret ~ You look great in your photo at the gardens. Your efforts to change your diets are showing up.
Rebecca ~ Hope you are able to have a good visit with your sister and that pink eye won't interfere with it. Hope your son and d-in-law find a suitable sitter soon so you can go back to your island.
Heather ~ Good luck and blessings on your second surgery. You did great on the first so I'm sure you will succeed beautifully.
Sorry, but that's all I can remember but love you all!

Good morning ladies!
Carol - thank you for the update! Continued prayers and good wishes for a quick recovery.
Tracey - sorry to hear the smoke is getting bad again. Yesterday we had sunshine after lunch, and light fluffy clouds, but the sky wasn't true blue - there was a very light haze. By suppertime, that haze had moved off and we had our beautiful blue sky again. Overcast this morning, I'm curious to see how today will be.
Annie and Machka - I also keep a running list of things I need to do when I get a chance. The ability to check off one simple one gives me a lift. My superwoman days are over, no need to accomplish everything on the list in one day. Took me a long time to let go of the "Type A" that I enjoyed when I was working.
Yesterday I discovered a foot doctor on YouTube. He has a ton of videos about everything related to feet. I got a lot of good information about metatarsalgia, questions answered and advice on exercises, shoes, etc. I found information here I was hoping to get from the local podiatrist I saw several months ago, who spent the 7 minutes convincing himself I had rheumatoid arthritis. I decided he was way overworked and hope he has taken a vacation. Don't plan on going back to him for a long time.
If anyone is interested:
He also has a website: https://www.michiganfootdoctors.com/
Calf and hamstring stretches are at the top of his list for alleviating the foot pain I've been having. And cutting back on walking to let the damaged tissue heal.
I was able to get my 10 minute sunrise walk done. I'm scheduled to walk with my neighbor at 7:30. It will be super short and I'll let her know this extended pavement walking she likes to do is curtailed until further notice.
Did I mention I'm looking at treadmills again - Joe the orthotics guy said walking on a soft surface like grass is best, but a treadmill has some give which isn't as bad for feet as a hard surface is. He pointed me to treadmills that are more affordable, fewer bells and whistles, said he got a very nice one at Costco (I'm not a member) for around $800. We'll see how the budget looks this winter.
That's it for now. Have a fabulous day!
