I recommend you read about strength training and positive bone density changes. There’s quite a bit of research on the advantages of lifting weights as we age. If you are not familiar, start out with getting your form down then add weights. There’s tons of resources out there and you will not end up looking like Arnold S - I promise. Best of luck to you.

@jspecies11 I actually have done weights more than most women in my past. I have always enjoyed them. Interesting claim I heard today was that reasonable impact makes a difference. The claim was 2 minutes of skipping is equal to an hour of weight training. Problem is I will feel very silly skipping around the neighborhood. But jump roping and box jumps are a possible substitution. I need DH to remind me how to turn on our Apple Fitness+ subtraction on on the TV.

So, as of yesterday, I have a new reason to work on my nutrition and habits. Some of you who were here, may remember that in May 2023 I went to DEXAFit for a scan. Goal was to learn body fat, but it also came back with bone density data. It came back with a score of 1.0. I was quite chuffed (I think that’s the right word) about that, and felt validated in my life choices. Well the bubble popped yesterday. I had the radiology department based screening. After the scan, I showed her the DEXAFit printouts and she looked highly confused. Long story short, the medical community puts me at a -2.0 hip and -1.9 for spine. These are osteopenia numbers.. . . Now, that I am “diagnosed” with a condition, it would ironically not be a screening, and I believe that going forward it will not be free. Anyone else addressing this issue as well?

Sheri, at my previous medical DEXA scan, I was still osteopenic but in the 2 year interim I have become osteoporotic. My GP way back then (30 years?) told me to take 1800 mg of calcium a day which I have done. (I’m not a milk drinker.) After the diagnosis of osteoporosis (February, 2024) I started seeing an endocrinologist and she said to cut the calcium to 1200 mg daily. (Possibly because my blood calcium was high??) I’m supposed to be starting on Prolia soon. I don’t know if I’ll be able to get free annual DEXAs but if I can, I will.

I just saw Donna’s message. I took Fosamax from the time they approved it for osteopenia for about 12 years. Until they said not to take it for over 10 years! Then 2 years ago my GP put me back on it after that DEXA showed osteopenia. Two years later, I am worse than I was.

And regarding exercise - yes, it is important to exercise but the endo told me NOT to lift over 10#! There is compression in my spine which I find very concerning since there are 2 - 1 foot long rods in my back!

@quiltingjaine Wow! Quite the journey. You may be seeing my responses to others so I'm trying to only add new points here. Do with it what you may, but in almost all the YouTubes I listened to yesterday/today, pretty much all stated that calcium supplements are not what we used to think and that that calcium supplements do not tend to end up in the bones. Claims were diet needs to be the calcium source. They also stated that calcium supplements are now watched due to heart issues/calcium in blood, which actually parallels what you mentioned above). Sorry to hear about the fragility of your spine, that is scary. What shocks me about myself is I lift everything, including things I won't let my 6ft husband pick up. So how did I get to this place? I am eyeing my bad dietary history.

@SModa61 thank you for the heads up. Good to know, I was hoping I was just not seeing a simple way to do it. I will Do it the way you said. I really like this 10 day accountability.

    Round 270
    August 24 – Sept 2, 2024

62 year old female, 5’5”. I am married, semi-nomadic (we live in three states, Mass, Maine, Florida).

    GW Maintaining between 124 - 126

Continuing to figure out maintaining, and to work on best nutrition and exercise.

    History:
Harry and Han are our cats, who travel with us. Have two “kids”, who are very much adults, a two grandsons. We have two parents, 87(mother), 85(MIL) still with us, and I have logically been needing to help them more as they age. I got my act in gear during COVID, somewhat inspired by NOT becoming my parents. I lost 30 lbs and was exercising daily. Unfortunately, I am an “all in or not” person. Hubby and I seeing our family home and downsizing distractions, plus medical incident with my father and all their new needs, became an excuse (father has since passed and I am DPOA, Personal representative AKA executor, trustee, and oversee the majority of my mother’s care). A year and a half later, I gained 25 lbs and lost all my athletic improvements. I need to figure out balance and how to make health be a daily priority for life!

    Day/Weight/Comment

8/24 – 135.2 Very happy surprise. In the past I have often found that a pasta dinner results in an uptick the following day, even if the calories are on target.

These are osteopenia numbers. So glad I asked for a verification of my fantastic number, or I would be continuing to coast along not questioning my habits. It is making it clear that not all calories are created equal, even if you can lose weight while eating them (cough…Ben and Jerry’s….cough). So I am going to be wrapping my head around focusing on nutrition, and maybe as a consequence I don’t cut my calories quite as hard while trying to trim weight. I need to think about my daytime food choices, and I need to get me exercise back in place. I am looking into grabbing a weighted walking vest to make my walks (that I need to get back to) more of a weight bearing exercise. I am so glad that the scan was supposedly “free”. I will see if that is true. But according to the billing department, everyone is allowed an annual free done density screening. Now, that I am “diagnosed” with a condition, it would ironically not be a screening, and I believe that going forward it will not be free. Anyone else addressing this issue as well?

DS is beginning to look at wedding venues, so I do also want to look good in a dress. They are looking at fall 2025, so I have a year.

8/25 – 135.8 Back to the starting number. I did eat thoughtfully and estimated tracking implies that I was under on calories, but who really knows when you are guessing provided food. I WENT FOR A WALK yesterday. Yes, I meant to write it in caps. Were any of you with me in the UAC challenge? (@UTmom81 were you with me?) Anyhow, I was doing it and this group simultaneously at one point in time. There was an aspect from that challenge that I am going to try incorporating, and that is 20 minutes of INTENTIONAL exercise OF ANY SORT each day. I remember from back then, 20 minutes was possible, even if I have to break it up into two 10 minutes to work it into my day. I am going to try working on the quality of my food choices, not just the overall calories. I need to stop yo-yoing.

Tonight, we are having neighbors over and I need to put something out. Been trying to come up with a nice offering, that will not have dangerous leftovers, and might have some healthful aspect. I have decided on Macarons (purportedly Target’s frozen macarons are great), with fresh grapes, and chocolate covered almonds. There will also be wine, coffee and espresso.

I’m really loving the conversation about bone density that is going on this round. I definitely learned a lot of details this morning that I had never fully thought about.
This led me to ask the question “At what age do I start having my bone density scans?”. Dr Google says most women should start at 65. This sounds too late to me!
I’m thinking if the best thing is to PREVENT bone loss instead of treat it and the best way to do both is through diet and exercise shouldn’t we start addressing this issue earlier?
My goal with my fitness journey is to steer myself in the right direction to age with my health as intact as I can. So thank you everyone for my intro education to bone density, I was not thinking about it fully!!!

@Skyleen75 If I had a do over, I would start with a call to my insurance company and find out what their restrictions are. I was shocked when I was told (hopefully correctly) that an annual screening is free. Is that for a certain age, or not? And if true, why do doctors not encourage it earlier. Now that I am reading on this topic, I cannot tell you how many stories I am seeing of someone with very early onset osteopenia (like in their 30's). As for using a non-medical assessment like I did last year with DEXAFit, I cannot understand how my two numbers are that far apart in 14 months (3 standard deviations of change for the worse) unless one is WRONG. I have to sadly assume the hospital version is the more correct. They won't reassess for two years. Assuming my -2.0 is correct, I would have loved a kick in the @ss sooner, but to be honest the screening was not offered to me, I asked about it and THEN was offered it. I totally expected to come out with brag worthy numbers. Glad I took the test.

@UTMom81 - How is your dad doing?

He is almost totally non-responsive now. Stirs occasionally but didn't even speak in his sleep yesterday. He seems to still know when we talk to him though. His breathing changes or his arms or legs will move a little. My daughter, who loves him SO much, sat with him last night so I could get some real sleep. Thank you for asking. <3

@utmom81 That is so difficult, I am sorry. Last year when my father was passing, and it was clear this was his end, I found his suffering those last days (pain) more difficult that the knowledge I was losing him. I am grateful for you that you have the support of your daughter! <3
