Good morning beautiful ladies!
I've been avoiding taking showers while Dad is up and about, but I need to figure out a way. I usually wait until he is at class. Hmm.
Have a great day ladies! May you be happy, healthy, safe and free!

I stopped stress eating. My DH lost weight faster than I did. I have 75 more pounds to go. It is nice fitting smaller sizes. I will take it 10 pounds at a time, so it won't seem so daunting.
Machka, I loved that sunset picture in Canada. You are a great photographer. I want to start riding my bike again. I have been looking into bikes but will wait until I move to Chicago. I have a friend who runs bike events and manages a bike shop. I am so excited to do that. I may pull my old bike from the shed and ride here. The Natchez Trace has a beautiful scenic bike trail.
Terri that is a lot of travel, but spending time with your granddaughter is worth it. I know you all will work hard, but you will also make memories. Have fun, enjoy, and please be safe.
Michelle, I am so happy to hear from you. Like everyone in this group, I have been worried. God answered my prayers. Be safe out there.
Pip, this is a teaching moment for our youth to learn compassion. Please don't hold back; tell them how you feel. I am glad that schools are making these kids volunteer to help people, that is an important lesson, to care about others.
@mstin123—Welcome to the group, and don't be shy. I am a newbie, and these ladies are lovely. Sign your discussion ending with your name or nickname and where you are from so we can get to know you. It took me a while to get it.
Hi Rori, it looks like you had a wonderful time in Maine. I am so glad you went.
I am ready to sleep now. Everyone take care, and I will talk to you later.
XO,

They are in their 30’s and 40’s. They should definitely know better. My mouth is way too foul so I want to step back before I say something I may regret. Believe me, I did vent to Kirby (hubby) and will talk to their mom (my sis) to let her know my feelings as she was included in the post and saw their remarks.

You're traveling a lot more of late. Hope it's going fairly easily, as well as rewarding. Also, how are your parents, particularly your mom?
My parents seemed a little better this time than last time.
Perhaps that's a perspective thing ... last time it had been 6 years since I had seen them, and the change was a bit of a shock. This time, there was no shock.
Or perhaps last time my mother was starting to feel unwell.
My husband did reasonably well with the travelling, but we travel at a slower pace than we used to. I have to incorporate rest times or it all becomes too much.
And yes, we have been travelling quite a bit recently. I didn't intend it to be this way initially, but after shuffling dates back and forth, to try to get them to work with all the factors that go into planning a trip, this was the best option.Machka: Welcome home. Hope you got to relax. Who watched Rhody while you were travelling?

I was trying to figure out what I actually do for self care--whether it's art or a long shower, or some form of relaxation, and realized that I'm finally coming around to what I call "yoga" as a form of self-care. It's probably better called "extended stretching," as it's not done with any religious bent or thought, it's just various postures and gentle movements right now that are meant to help my flexibility. But it is finally becoming something that I use for self-care, with all that entails. She pointed out that when you've spent your whole life looking at exercise as a chore or an obligation, it's a really good mental step to take.
Just thought I'd share.
Later,
Love,
lisa.
For me, exercise is an important part of self-care. That's one of the reasons I like it. It burns off stress, gives me a sense of accomplishment, provides me time to think, often allows me to have some alone-time, puts me into a better mood ... and more. If I don't exercise regularly, I feel my stress-level rising.

Good morning everyone!
I'm Michelle and I am in Alabama. I'm 53 YO and Live a very quiet life for the most part. I'm single, with 1 furbaby and I work a lot. Looks like I am going to love this thread...such exciting lives everyone out there lives.
My plan is to be more active...take walking breaks throughout the day and implement some exercise before or after work. Also to be aware of what goes in my body. I have a tendency to wait til I'm starving and overeat. My goal here is to start prepping my meals and have something on hand to keep the hunger bug at bay.
I can't wait to learn all the tips and tricks from everyone! Thank you for welcoming me!!

Michelle in Alabama- welcome and come back here often! Your fur baby is a dead ringer for my Rosie. Here she is inspecting the baby chicks last year.
Guess who has frost on the deck this morning? Thermometer says 34F. Looks like I'll be stapling down the anti-slip carpeting this week. Got the deck re-stained just under the wire.

Some might remember how relieved I was about the badly crowned tooth the dentist told me was doing fine? The one he said to call him about if I started having problems? Yeah...I'll be calling when they open. Woke me up a half dozen times... one of the few times I've really been able to FEEL the very specific fact that some teeth grow nerves that are laid along the floor of the sinuses. Feels like someone punched me in the face on the left side of my nose. Annoying.
Not devastating, I might add, it's not like I haven't been up in the early mornings every morning of late. Just... annoying. Took a pain pill, some Tylenol (no NSAIDS for me) and rubbed Orajel all over the area, which makes my tea taste like ca-ca, but the tooth is somewhat calmer. Until I clench my teeth without meaning to. Will just try to ignore it for the time being.
What can't be cured (yet) must be endured (for now). --Burton, updated to the 21st century!
We cannot catch a break lately on the unexpected outlays. We're doing fine, don't get me wrong, but there is no money going into savings... it's all going out. Ah well, this too will pass.
Egg is staring me down as I'm typing this in the craft room, because she doesn't have room to sit in my lap while I'm typing at the table. She's purring at me very loudly, though. She begged to go outside, but I've been hearing coyotes in the area, so won't let her out in the very wee hours of the morning. One very spoiled kitty is just not getting what she wants this morning.Small Christmas gift bags - my fingers are there for scale. Please note, small ones take even longer to make than large ones, quite a bit more fiddly:

Hope you can get into the dentist soon and get that taken care of.
I totally understand what you mean on finances. We too are doing ok but they took dh off the schedule for two weeks so no pay check coming in from that then added expenses keep popping up- new tire for my car(second one in a year)both from pot hole/road damage or debris). He also bought a second catio and new wood for part of the deck. We were only going to replace the worst spots but the place has the ones we need at 40% off so getting extra this morning.
Wanted to sleep in but couldn't. Now I am in the living room, door open because it is cool BUT they are doing work on the gas lines here and the workers are just on the other side of our fence digging, shoveling gravel, grinding, etc- started exactly at 8. They have been working on our street for weeks-can't park on the street until 5pm each day
Going to do a nebulizer treatment and drink my tea while dh sleeps(worked until 4am this morning after working full shift the night before and only a very short nap yesterday)- he is so exhausted. He tried to sleep last night but couldn't(didn't help he had the light on,tv on and his phone on, watching a video)then he got a terrible thigh cramp- he was SCREAMING and cussing like crazy . Took a hot shower and it finally let go. Just about the time he had to get up to go to work at 10:30. Letting him sleep as much as possible now.
We will go to his mom's-I will walk her dog while he tends to her then we will stop and get the lumber.
Skipping walking the wetlands today-
Mid 90's again today- cooler than yesterday but we will wait and see. It got hotter than expected yesterday.

Cute pup.
What part of AL are you in?

Hello, my dearlings... as Lanette said, at the bottom of every post, there's a "flag" icon, and if you select "report," it allows you to choose why you're flagging it. For those who are new, it doesn't happen often, but MFP has been good in the past at getting rid of the trolls and urkies.
A couple more hours of sleep helped me get my brain working again. In my waking hours, been working on sock defenders all morning. Kind of a market test. Picked up four thrifted sweaters yesterday, and was able to rescue two pairs from each one, so I'll see what happens with those at the November fair. Not hard to make, just a little boring, which was what sent me off to sleep, so there's that. 😂 Carol, my only advice for napping is that practice makes perfect. 😴😂
Michelle in Alabama, welcome! Your fur baby is beautiful, look forward to having you as part of the group! The thread moves really fast, so don't assume no one is listening because a lot of posts haven't responded to yours--the person who will respond may not have dropped in yet... Please comment or add your two cents to any conversation that interests you... There are a wide range of subjects, for sure. Getting healthy isn't just about fitness or diet, but about the whole person, so a lot of things come up to talk about regularly! Glad you're here. We're supportive, judgment-free, and avoid politics and religion, making this a truly wonderful place to get together and gab.
Rita - My mums just all popped out as well! I had to pull down all my morning glory vines yesterday, and they were shading the mums, mine are the dark magenta chrysanthemums, and they'd been hiding in the shadows...
For my master gardeners -Last year's $2.87 Christmas poinsettia is now three feet high, three feet wide and plotting to take over my flower bed, where I put it six or eight months ago, as soon as it got warm. I'm planning on letting it winter outside, under my policy of benign neglect for most plants. Right now, it's in a protected spot, but it will get down to freezing for quite a bit of January, most likely. Is it going to croak? Please note, I don't get all het up about most plants, this one included. If it makes it, great, if it doesn't, oh well. I bought it for Christmas a year ago and never expected it to survive at all!
However, it is beautiful, but the blinking thing could get as high as 15 feet tall if it survives the winter! So I want to move it from the flowerbed to the ground near the bed. When should I transplant it? Now, or in the spring? I mean, if it dies, it dies, but I don't want to actively murder it. And no, I don't worry about Egg munching on it, as she is supremely uninterested in plants except the occasional blade of grass. I really don't worry about the feral cats that wander through, either (sorry, Debbie, neither feeding them nor adopting them). That benign neglect thing extends to them as well. I leave them alone as long as they don't try to come in the house.
House and flower pics:This is the front aspect before the vines all died...
And today, after - the big pile of greenery behind my car is all the vines, which I will drag off to the burn pile tomorrow.
The poinsettia in the flowerbed outside the sunroom:
The mums in the front flowerbed:
The vincas, also in the front flowerbed - and if you ever need a flowering plant that blooms all summer long, these have been great. And one teeny-tiny morning glory that survived the purge.

Barbara AHMOD-thanks for posting recipe for me!
My September was a blur-exceedingly busy and preoccupied. Also didn't help caught a cold two weeks ago (yes, babysitting gdaughter). I think I just catch all the day care cooties. This one is hanging on. Giving it through the weekend and will see doctor if not better Monday. Meanwhile I am running air purifiers at home and attacking all dust and cat hair.
Heather-sorry two of the men in your life are having struggles. I think it make sense you can love your ex-that doesn't mean you were a good fit married.
Allie-the new baby is adorable. Very good of you to take care of Selena.
Michele-glad you came through ok. The destruction in Asheville (and everywhere it hit) was just devastating. We had quite a few people here without power for several days from the wind and the rain.
Well darn, I missed the troll-or evidently fart-head according to Pip. I even went back reading to see what I had missed.
Need to go fill the dishwasher. Working from home most of tomorrow. Hoping things settle down. Nothing I can discuss here-but I am still glad you ladies are here to help keep me sane.
Take care,
Ginny in Ohio5 -
Glad MFP stepped up. Nastiness should not be encouraged... don't know if I will ever understand people like that.
In the end, after I posted on here, I went in and used my knockoff Waterpik and really went after that area... and lo and behold, a tiny little piece of beef jerky, just a thread, washed out of my mouth. Within about an hour, the tooth had completely calmed down. Didn't know if it was the pain meds, so I just kept checking in on it for the rest of the day... and it's still fine.
No more beef jerky! And whew! Glad it settled down. Amazing what one tiny little thing can do to cause pain.
Nice quiet day... thinking about everyone who's in need of comfort, and joyful for those who celebrate. 8 a.m. telehealth appointment with my hematologist tomorrow morning, then no more medical appointments until November. For now, anyway.
Later, my chicks,
Love,
Lisa in AR

Motivational Tools
I know these things don't work for everyone, but over the years, I've found that reports and challenges motivate me to exercise more.
Exercise Minutes over the past 30 days. I log my exercise here on MFP and use the Report tool to produce the following image.
I also use Strava to log my exercise. In Strava I join challenges which can motivate me to get out there and do something.

To name a few ... in no particular order ...
Machka in Oz
2024 has been a year in which I have been doing things for the first time ... things that have been on my LIST for years, decades. I decided that it is finally time to start doing some of those things rather than just looking at them on my LIST.
This year, my husband and I have learned to fence.
We bought a house (first time for me!)
We took a train trip from one side of Australia to the other - the Indian Pacific
And on this trip to Canada, I was determined to continue those firsts.
During the train trip, when the people I met learned I was from Canada, almost all of them commented on the Butchart Gardens and how beautiful the Butchart Gardens are. I was given a set of post cards when I was in my early teens from a family member who had been to the Butchart Gardens, and thought it was a beautiful place, but for some reason, I have never been. This year, we remedied that situation. My husband and I went to the Butchart Gardens and it is indeed a beautiful place. I regret not visiting earlier, but am so glad we went this year.
In 2007, I had a brief stay in the Harrison Hot Springs Resort at the end of a long, long cycling event. I was too exhausted to really enjoy the stay but I knew I wanted to go back and enjoy the place. This year, my husband and I stayed 2 nights and thoroughly enjoyed the hot springs. We haven't been in a pool of any sort since his accident 6.5 years ago, and it got me thinking again of taking a "Learn to Swim" course.
When I was telling my work colleagues about the Indian Pacific train trip from one side of Australia to the other, one asked if it was like an "old west" train trip where train robbers on horses come up and "rob" the passengers etc. The Indian Pacific is not like that ... it reminded me of the Orient Express movies I've seen. However, I did think the "old west train trip idea was interesting and I found one out of Summerland BC. And yes, train robbers on horses stopped the train and "robbed" the passengers!!
Some of the other places we visited are places we've been before, like Chemainus BC with all the murals, but I wanted to go there again to help spark my husband's memory.

Machka- I LOVE Butchart Gardens. I have been a few times. Getting to see it at night was amazing. Would love to go back.
Had my first try at using a drop trap to catch a stray/feral cat and I succeeded!! Was easier than I expected. I guess all those hours watching cartoons as a kid payed off. I caught the mom of the triplets we have(and the mom of the last two kittens we caught and found fosters/homes for)- we got her fixed along with the other two that were out there. The other girl is in the house- she was someones cat for sure and then just dumped her- the other, the boy is in the new catio so I caught the girl so they can be together again in a safe place where they will be pampered I am sure..
Now, Dh needs to stop putting any food outside- IF he sees the neighbor's cat he can put food out for it but that is it- Putting all that food(and he put a LOT) invites other critters, including the racoons, is wasteful if they don't eat it, and is expensive.

Hello, my lovely friends,
I hope you all had a wonderful day today. I heard there was some silliness posted. Pip called him a fart head; that was so funny. I still think the word fart is funny. I always thought of Pip as straight-laced, so hearing that from her amused me. My in-laws were appalled when I got the kids "Walter the Farting Dog." My kids loved that book. Well, I had a day. Like Lisa, my wisdom tooth on the left side of my face hurt. I thought it was my sinuses. The second time, it hurt so badly that I took 800mg of motrin. I felt much better, but then I felt nauseous. I took Rose to get groomed in the morning, and she was supposed to play with the other dogs until it was time to get groomed. I am so glad I called to make sure she got groomed. The lady forgot about her and assured me she would groom her. Her paws were beginning to look like the grinches. I brushed her and noticed some matting in her skirt, and her nails were too long.
I decided not to go to the pool today. I laid down and napped. I declutter our nightstands, but I need to do the drawers next. DH's drawer is terrible. I will put whatever needs sorting by him in a box, and then he can determine keep vs trash. Then it got worse. I got the mail, and the nursing home sent a letter stating that they decided to close the Memory Care and focus on assisted living only. So now I need to find another place for my mom. Moving to another place will be hard because she is comfortable where she is. DH had me take a pic of the letter. He called, but it was too late. He wants to see if she can be transferred to assisted living. I started looking around now. DH was upset and binged on candy. I reminded him that eating about it does not fix the problem. On top of it all, his mom is not doing well in Florida. His brother does not care for her as we would. So, we have two moms to worry about. So we decided that she would need to move to Chicago with us. We will prepare for that when I move to Chicago cause he travels too much. I think she needs assisted care because she is not coherent sometimes. Sorry for being so long-winded.
Alabama Michelle, I love your dog. She is so cute. Like Lisa, we are state neighbors.
Lisa, I love those gift bags. You are making beautiful things, and you are in your happy place. That pizza Corey is working on looks good. Egg said it was time for some attention. I love the pictures; they make me smile.
Rebecca, I am sleeping well. I am glad you are having fun with your family.
Ginny, I am sorry you have been so sick. Many have flooded the ER with rhinoviruses and other viruses. When you are on the mend, you may want to get the Flu shot. Unfortunately, there are no guarantees on that. We are amazed to learn that we get another type of flu. I am getting the COVID and Flu shot in November, which can last the flu season. When I see my allergist, I will ask about Arexvy, too. I hope you feel better soon.
Machka, you are so lucky to have those beautiful views.
Well, good night, everyone.
XO,
MO

Today’s gratitude: SempervirensJoe called me out to the side yard to “see something.” “Is that what I think it is?” Yes! A redwood sapling sprung up from the root of the 3 ft tree that was cut down in July to make way for the water tank. I was sooo angry I was sick at my stomach. Now, it’s already 18 inches tall. Relief, redemption, rejoicing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sequoia_sempervirensCarol, wow, what an abundance of vintage jewelry! Good sorting! Mama had a choker that I loved, it looked like an Ancient Egyptian collar necklace. Don’t know what ever happened to it, but since I rarely wear jewelry. . .
Lisa so glad you got to the root of the tooth pain. Still might want to have the DDS check it out, that much pain is worrisome.
Michelle in AL prepping meals is the best defense against the starving/overeating cycle. Well done! Absolutely your furbaby! Miniature Schnauzer?
Lanette and pip, somehow I have missed the silliness, so thanks for flagging and reporting it.
Ginny, my summer cold-fatigue lasted almost three weeks. Hope yours doesn’t!
No decluttering progress, but I did re-gift two puppy dog coffee mugs in with T’s other birthday present. She’s going with me to Coos Bay to have the rest of the 100K $$$ervice done on my car. I’ll take her out to lunch at the yummy vegan restaurant. We’ll shop at Natural Grocers, Wal~Mart and wherever else she wants to go. It will be a long day so, time to snooooozzzzzzzzz…..
Later, lighter, lovelies!

Lisa so glad your health has settled down. And yay! For winning the struggle with the VA!
Mo I can't imagine having two moms to settle at once. Hope they gave you plenty of notice for your mom.
Terri have a lovely trip!
My dad put his hearing aids in the charger backwards last night. They will charge some because I caught it early, but geez. I thought he could do that himself. I guess this whole journey forward will be a series of things he can no longer do. So sad.
