For you ladies with kitties.... I just saw this on FB:

Chilly and foggy SW WA State

Lanette I often buy my store bought flowers at a local grocery store who gets their flowers from a local nursery named Bachman's. I bought a red bunch and white bunch and put them together. I am pleased with the result. If I change the water frequently they can last as long as three weeks. Roses might last a week. The roses I got from my Thanksgiving dinner are still looking great but then I do keep my house cool. Lots of blankets, sweatshirts, and some space heaters keep the thermostat down.
I just learned from a friend at church one of the Social Security Offices no longer does walk-ins. I hope my friends can find one that will let her walk-in otherwise it will take her even longer to start getting her spousal benefits.6 -

jenferbar – welcome!
Annie – I do think the podiatrist is helping. When I go back Tuesday, I’m going to ask him if there’s a more permanent solution like putting some sort of acid on it. Maybe it’s some kind of medication, I don’t know. I did try using the voltaren on my heel last night and I’m THINKING that just a little bit of it is better. I definitely want this gone by Feb. because I love walking down in FL. I know Vince feels bad that we won’t have any Christmas tree (except for the sizzle one for the cats). I told him to try to look on the bright side...we won’t be cleaning needles for months, there will be less popcorn that I’ll have to string next year….:)
Lisa – I don’t see a post from a “juliabuyers”. All the flagging must have worked! Can you post a picture of the pillow? Sounds interesting
JoAnn – welcome. What part of PA are you from? We used to live in the Poconos and then in Kennett Square.
Advent calendars: this isn’t exactly an advent calendar but when the kids were small, I’d put up a hanger (we had a drop ceiling) and I’d put 24 candy canes on it. They got one each night. This was also a good way for them to visually see how much longer it is until Christmas. Speaking of which – wonder what KJ’s up to Update: Denise just called to say that she's doing the same thing with PJ
kylia – thanks for popping in. Boy, you have sure been busy!
Sorry, deb. I don’t have any pictures of the tree. The parts are already in recycling. We just took it apart. Oh well…. It really wasn’t that hard to put together but you really needed those pieces for the base and I think there might have been another piece needed for the top (there was just ½ of it)
Vince is working on these blowmold Nutcrackers we got. See, they just had LED lights and at night, honestly, you really couldn’t see exactly what they were. Last year we put floodlights on them but what he’s doing is cutting a piece of PVC at an angle so we can put that in the ground with a light on the top so it’ll light up the whole Nutcracker. Just not the drum, but that has a fair amount of LED’s so it should show up pretty well. The Nutcracker will go over the pipe so it’ll be illuminated. He also needs to put in a wire so that the light gets electricity. I know he can do it. Just wish he’d done it earlier so he isn’t rushing. Well, that’s the difference between us. I like to get things done early, he waits until the last minute. Then many times runs out of time to do whatever it is he needed to do.
Remember I told you about the sequencing problem Vince was having with the Christmas lights? Well, he figured it out. The computer was running the sequence from LAST year. Guess the program was still on the computer. So he’ll fix it.
Allie – was Miles making the cookies at home or at his daycare?

Things such as diet, stress, and exposure to chemicals can all affect our epigenetics. So, while we inherit our genes from our parents, how our body reads and uses those genes can be influenced by our life experiences — and sometimes these changes can even be passed on to our children! It’s a way the environment and our lifestyle can interact with our genetic code to influence our health.

Heather - I remember the year my grandmother decided not to put a tree up. I was devastated. She finally relented and bought a little table top tree that came fully decorated. She took it out of the box and set it up. I thought it made for a great compromise. I understand the reasoning, it’s a lot of work, but I hope I don’t ever get to the point I don’t want to do it.
Your Christmas Eve pancake orgy sounds wonderful!
Machka - it’s a lot of work planning these things and then the weather being a contributing factor is never easy.
Happy 1st day of summer.
If Christmas were just my decision I would probably only do stockings and one gift for everyone. Rodger and I both grew up with big Christmases. His much bigger than mine. We were only grandchildren on my maternal side and my grandparents really spoiled us. My parents did what they could and I think Dad must have struggled to do what he did each year.
Rodger’s family had massive amounts of gifts. Rodger doesn’t feel it’s Christmas unless there is a lot under the tree. I’m more about the time spent choosing a gift and then watching my loved ones open them.
I bought Michaela a necklace and earring set today. They are Mickey. She goes by Micki to everyone but me so it’s appropriate.
Lisa - I love the heat from a wood stove or fireplace but boy I don’t like the work they take.
A crochet pillow is a great idea.
Margaret - your Mums are so pretty!
Read through everyone’s posts but started late tonight.
I did some shopping this morning, groceries and a little Christmas. This afternoon and this evening I made a couple of cards for coworkers. These are not my designs. The coffee one someone else posted online and I just did my version of it, the other one is a pattern I bought online. That one I’m going to a young coworker who is moving into a new home on Dec 10th.
I have so much more to get done!8 -

Good Morning!
Allie Sounds like sleep was just the ticket! Miles and Delia are getting so big!
Machka Thank you for the quotes and the 12 days of kittens! They were needed this morning! Now if I can figure out the root of the problem......It was asked of me if I always wanted to view myself as a victim or if I wanted advice to fix situations.....I have struggled with that statement. I didn't/don't realize that some people hear that when I speak. I am being stronger in speaking my needs and wants with DH and work. More food for thought.
Jennifer Welcome! There are lots of different ways to set goals. Several styles show up here. You will find the right one for you. I am still trying to figure out what works for my "squirrely" brain. I have never thought of goals or planning until I met this group.
Tracey Your cards are beautiful! I don't know where you find the time or energy.
Yesterday was good. I did get outside for about 20 mins to help DH with a project. Worked on Christmas cards. Did a few little chores. Cooked dinner. I really dislike my air fryer. Will need to decide if I want to try a different kind, keep this one and grin and bear it, or just recycle and remove from my cabinet. I use my toaster oven frequently as well as the electric griddle so those will stay. I did drink more water than normal, but not as much as should. I moved more than I normally do on a Sunday, so also good!

Our printer is playing up. John hasn't managed to fix it so far. He thought he might have done, so I tried it this morning, but no go.
I wrote (a very short) round robin this morning, so that those 'once a year' people will get an update on my hip operations etc. I've sent it over by email to my DDIL to see if she can do me a few copies. I can collect tomorrow, at Bea pick up. Otherwise I will have to go to one of the print shops around the corner.
A small frustration, but something you don't need.
John seems to think I tried to print in colour, but we shall see.
I have never done one in the past, but thought it would save me scribbling.
Like some others of you, I love receiving cards from old friends, and always appreciate news.
Kylia - I think of you often. I have faith in you. You will find your way through this, I know.

Today was recovery day.
Organising cycling events often takes it out of me. Stress about the weather. Stress about rider safety. Stress about ensuring everything is where it's supposed to be along the route. And being social.
Even when we sat at the finish line with our club flag up, we had people coming along and talking to us ... which is great, but it's a lot more socialising than I'm used to.
With a few exceptions, socialising drains my personal energy battery.
So I slept today.
When I got up, we made a trip to the storage unit and with some difficulty we managed to extract the Christmas decorations!! We also got a bin of my clothes - I wanted that because one of the things I want to do during the Christmas break is to go through my clothes, and take a pile of them to an op shop.
Then I went out and spent a bit of time doing battle with that grass we have. My mattock vs the grass!

Good morning ladies!
I was up super early again but still got 6 hours of sleep. It's currently 23F at my house. I put on the outside faucet covers last week. Once we finish with this foggy cold snap in a couple days, it looks like we'll be back to warmer weather (low's in the 30's/40's, highs in the 40's/50's and rain.) The first week of December can be exciting in my area. Major windstorms, floods, now nearly record cold. So I'm grateful only fog is predicted today. And that I don't have to drive in it.
This morning I made the first woodstove fire of the season. Rosie is laying in front of the it right now soaking up the heat. I have a rule that if the night/early morning temps get down into the 20's and the daytime temps stay in the 30's, then I make a fire. Didn't do it yesterday and the house just didn't seem to get warm. No fog right now, just beautiful starry skies. Maybe the weatherman's fog prediction won't come true.
Kylia - I need to take a hard look at my kitchen cupboards and especially cookware/bakeware too. My instant pot and air fryer sit on a shelf in the garage. I use an egg cooker similar to the one shown for hard-boiled eggs that works perfectly every time and doesn't take up much space. I use it at least once a week.
Jennifer - Welcome! I like your plans for next year. It's not too soon to get started, is it? I've been thinking about my own goals. A year ago, I had no idea that my foot would be so bothersome, or that I'd be diagnosed as pre-diabetic. But on the plus side, as a result of these things, I'm now doing morning stretches which help me overall, my foot seems better, and my diet is much improved. I'm a big believer in silver linings and things working out for the best. So we'll see what's in store for 2025.
Heather - hope John can get the printer going for you. Mine is temperamental too. Seems like every time there's a software upgrade of some type, it either works or it doesn't. And it's always giving me the "ink low" warning, which means I can print another 24 pages at least. Aggravating.
OK ladies, back in a bit.
Lanette
SW WA State3 -
Good morning beautiful ladies!
JoAnn from PA and Jennifer from CT welcome!
Kylia good to hear from you!
Lanette glad you mentioned outdoor faucets. It's time to do something about ours.
Dad's been a nuisance lately. I got a bookcase as a present for my birthday. He assembled it wrong then tried to drill a hole where it needed one. I had to take it apart again and reassemble it. I'm forever interrupted. Plus he ate lunch at church and didn't tell me to cancel Sunday dinner.
I told him I wanted to carry the bookcase upstairs while it was still in pieces so we could make a few trips. But it didn't sink in.
He is getting worse. He told the same story six times Saturday morning. It reminds me that I need to work on his paperwork.
Meanwhile I've been bad about taking my prescriptions since the diverticulitis which was a month ago. I need to work on self care.
He wants to light candles on an advent wreath every night. I think fire is a terrible idea. Plus we need a tray for underneath to catch the wax.
I really don't want to bother with a Christmas tree. I hate being forced into it. Maybe I can just delay.
I still have to pick up things from Thanksgiving.
Boy am I whiny today! I need to kick myself in the butt and get going!
Have a great day! May you all be happy, healthy, safe and free!
Annie in Delaware7 -
Our woodstove is more recreational than anything. I love the heat but controlling it is awkward. The furnace is much simpler. Jake loves the wood stove and thinks it saves on our heating bill and I don't argue with him. This year we've had to have more help than before with splitting wood and supplying kindling but Jake has good friends to help. We have a fire in the morning when Jake is inspired to build one. I could probably build and start it myself but with him here, he would direct and try to help and if he weren't here, I'd be more likely to just kick the thermostat up a few degrees to get warmer.
I had a Christmas tree every year for decades until one year I decided that I'd had enough. We boxed up nearly all our ornaments and gave them to our oldest granddaughter. I have no idea whether she still has any of them and don't care. I put energy into what's important to me and don't do other things. We don't have local kids and grandkids so there is no family that will be disappointed to come to our house and find no tree or lights or decorations.

Morning my chickens, from the sunny, cold climes of the Arkansas River Valley.
Welcome once more to Jennifer in CT and JoAnn in PA - glad to have you!
My daughter's feelings got hurt when I told her yesterday we wouldn't be filling in the books, and she sent me a tersely written text and image of a return label and asked me to return them. Which I printed out and the books are repackaged today for sending.
For those who don't get why we won't fill them out, I've explained a bit more in the spoiler. For those who don't care, just skip it.Here are the best metaphors I can find. Sending that book to her dad, asking him to answer all these questions about his past and his life, is like him sending all the lumber and materials, etc., to have her build a sunroom on our house FOR HIM. And then getting angry when she won't do it because she doesn't have the tools or the skill or the time to do so. He also noted this morning, "It's like sending me an activity to do for Christmas. I have enough activities that need doing."
Sending that book to me, on the other hand, is like saying, "I know you've written your autobiography, but here are the questions I want you to answer, because your answers aren't good enough." I asked her if she had even read the questions in these books, and she said "No," so it's not even her questions, it's some complete stranger's questions!
And then she got angry when I said "No."
Corey and I talked a bit about it, and while we don't act like her fantasy of how parents should want to act, that's really OK. There are parts of my life I don't share with anyone, because I think they should die with me. There's no reason for them to keep living on after me. He feels the same way.
I fully get the emotional reasons why she wants these things, I do. But we're not the people she thinks we are, apparently, and once she pulled out that old saw of "I never ask for anything," I was done. I do not respond well to emotional blackmail.
Anyway... other than that, things are going quite well. Regarding November goals. For those who are new, my goals, unlike many others, are vague, as I do not respond well to specific numbers these days. I obsess over them, and have been known to let 3/10ths of a pound ruin my whole day. I had to pull out of that mind set. I'm also dealing with an auto-immune disease that does not respond well to stress, but is responding well to the latest biologic.
So my goals are:
✅Be lighter
✅Be healthier
✅Stick to the budget. My budget, of course has numbers built in - but the goal is just to stick to it.
My performance for November's goals:
❌ Be lighter - Nope, but reasonably pleased that I gained only a pound with Thanksgiving just last week! Was 156 on November 1, and am 157 this morning.
✅ Be healthier - Yes, my body is responding very well to the prebiotics (fiber), probiotics and Skyrizi. I'm as close to a normal regimen as I've been in the last five years, and sleeping 8 to 9 hours most nights is also helping so much.
❌ Stick to the budget - No and yes, in all reality. While we didn't stick to November's budget, the overage was actually the Christmas budget that I had set aside for gifts for ourselves and each other, son and daughter and grandkids. That has been spent out and is either on our mantelpiece, in their hands or on its way.
So, all in all, not terribly upset at not achieving my goals exactly, and actually pleased with them in the overall sense.
And one huge leap forward: This morning, for the very first time, as I heard Corey getting dressed for work, I thought, "I should get up and get going on the laundry," and then that lovely thought crossed my mind, "I'm retired! I'll do it when I get it done." And I rolled over and went back to sleep.
Only took me four and a half years.
I can be a little slow on the uptake. 😽😹😃
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR
PS - Goals for December:
✅Be lighter
✅Be healthier
✅Stick to the budget.4 -
JoAnn from PA and Jennifer from CT welcome! You are like family to me! I have a brother and Goddaughter/cousin both in PA at opposites sides. One by the ocean, one by the mountains. AND I come from CT with family still there ( I also have a brother and a sister in Kentucky, and my middle daughter in TN. We are a family of Nomads! LOL)
9My mom and 1 sister live in CT, so does my son and 1 grandson. I have a daughter and another grandson in MA, and a nephew in NH.) We lived in Both the Northeast and Central parts of CT. I lived in TN for 15 years in between the 2 CT years and now am retired and live in NM. As you can tell, I love traveling and living in different cultures, areas, and weathers. Experimenting for when we finally REALLY settle down to finish our lives out. Perhaps never permanent? We shall see! 😁
I am working on my goals for 2025. They like this year are SMART goals. I have grouped them sort of like Machka does her wheel. I like the way I have it set up for this year. I have already figured out my Word of the Year, and it will be: CHANGE. Lots going to happen this coming year with a potential move to a house somewhere. Not sure yet where we will go, but research begins in January! I’ll post a copy when I’m happy with it.
Physical Therapy at 1 pm today, and Psychologist at 11:30 am this morning. Then, no doctors the rest of the week. Further in the month we both have bloodwork for PC, then visit there and I have bloodwork on Christmas Eve for my Kidney doc. Don’t know how many more PT sessions, at least 3 counting today’s, so once a week for those. I am so sick of medical stuff! I really hope next year is better!

Lisa, This is so well said. I've heard the ads for projects like this and they are all about how satisfying the project will be for the giver. It is somehow assumed that the recipient will enjoy doing the work. It is not unlike buying a vacuum for your wife or mother. Bravo to you for speaking up. I hope your daughter will think about what you said and understand it better. Saying "I don't ask for anything" makes exactly the point that the gift is asking something of you rather than giving you something.

Some of my out door lights...I did this when it was warmer this year...really helped...
Having someone recheck furnace tomorrow...It has been chirping and zone board says valves are shut. I just had it checked at the end of October. It is a newer furnace. I am finding the newer appliances tend to have more problems. We got a new dish box system last year and I am having to switch that out too. I did tell them if this does not fix the problem and if I have to pay for a technician to come out I am discontinuing Dish. I don't watch it enough to pay any more than I am already paying. Mostly had it for DH. There are a couple things I like to watch on it so I'm still deciding if time to pull the plug.4 -
Regarding Lisa's daughter's request for answering questions: I think that most of us have things in our life that we do not wish to share with others! And, I know that my husband feels the same way about his growing up years. Maybe it's our way of coping with past hurts and embarrassing circumstances.
Margaret, I like your outdoor decorations. I am mortified to be paying Xfinity so much for our internet/tv service but don't have the expertise to find better/cheaper ways to get the entertainment we love. I did notice that Direct tv is about the same price in my area.

Good Morning!
I have an Insta-Pot too that I only use to make hard boiled eggs. These two things take up a lot of cabinet space for how rarely I use them. Something to consider in my quest to declutter. I use my toaster oven frequently as well as the electric griddle so those will stay. I did drink more water than normal, but not as much as should. I moved more than I normally do on a Sunday, so also good!

What is it about your air fryer that you don't like.
Those are my two favorite appliances
Yes, it did take a year to start using the air fryer and 2 before I started using my pressure cooker but now, use them both all the time.
We have upgraded a few times on the air fryers. The only appliance dh will actually use occasionally.
He will even cook a steak in it. We use it all the time
I used to not like when he would pick up fried chicken but when I air fry it to warm it up, it renders the extra fat out between the skin and the breading, making it extra crisp and not greasy. They reheat pizza in it to crisp the crust. Love making tots in it. A lot quicker than using the oven.
The pressure cooker I use pretty often. Great for so many things. Great now that I got over the fear of using it.

Made three pots of pesto from my monster basil plant, and they are in the freezer.
Dinner was halloumi curry, one of our favourite discoveries from this year. Or was it last year?
John has sort of fixed the printer and is able to print a rather grey page. 😀 He has composed a rather longer round robin than mine and printed it out. I have left the job to DDIL, and her laser printer!
My laptop is struggling, the TV is struggling, mainly because we are cheapskates and make things last as long as possible. Plus I hate changes and hassle! My phone is ancient 😐, and so is my tablet. We are on borrowed time! Strangely, the printer is newer.
John threw me into a loop this morning when he asked if we were doing presents this year, apart from Santa presents, and was there anything I wanted. My brain went into a spin because we had agreed no presents!!! After a few moments, I said no, no presents, though I did toy, just for a moment, with asking for something luxurious and expensive. Temptation.
A new phone?

My favorite spot at mom's house(the house I grew up in from 4th grade up) is the fireplace. It is hand made with river rock we gathered from the creek or my uncle and grandpa got at the rock quarry that they worked at, made by a very close family friend. It has a raised hearth to sit on that is also rock but little tiny flat ones we got at the ocean or at the river.
It does have an insert in it now so not as nice as it was but works great- That was our only heat we used when we were growing up. We did have a heater but didn't use it. Mom has a new one now and does use it to take the chill off but uses the fireplace all day/night this time of year. She just keeps it going. Making sure to put a "night log" on. Dad would get up during the night to put another one on, to keep it going. She has the people who live in the trailer helping bring in wood but she still does most of it by herself. Many people drop off wood for her and there are others that split it for her.
I will be up there this coming weekend and will spend some time in front of that with my tea. She does get it a bit too warm for me so I make sure to have cooler clothes to change into. Tank top for sure.
She likes it warmer than I do. I am used to having it cooler- They were always cold when they came to our house(she hasn't been here in at least 6-7 yrs)so we would crank up the heater for them.

Thank you Barbie for getting us going for December.
Welcome-- JoAnn from PA and Jennifer from CT. These ladies are the best.
Kylia--So glad you are posting. Sounds like a lot going on.
I bought 2 differet memory books and started filling one out, but just can't get into finishing them. I agree somethings are better left a lone.
Tonight is the Women's Christmas party at church. Last several years I have hosted a table Invite my DDIL and 2 granddaughters. Enjoy the time with them and they play fun games and lots of door prizes. I got a cheese and cracker tray and oreo cheesecake to take. We also collect gloves, socks and hats for the shelter.

MFP Weekly Check-In for December 2, 2024
Rita in Roswell NM - My weight has been going up the last few weeks. Eating my stress plus holidays. At 178.3 today, I am still below the 186 I started at this time and way below the 210 my all time high. So not depressed about my weight, just too much life hitting me at once lately. I’m not going to focus on my weight loss so much this month, but just on not getting any higher. Being healthy is my main goal and not gaining any more. I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving if you celebrate it, if not, I still hope you’ve had a great weekend!
Barbara on the Southern Oregon Coast - Looks like I missed, last week so comparisons from two weeks ago.
WT Sunday back down to 130.3 from 131.6 . Weekly average down to 130.7 from 131.7.. Weekly average steps WAY down to 5459 from 7778. Again skipped one each of the weekly BB&B, dog groups, and weekly line dancing, unwilling to travel during storms.. PT & Zumba not yet.
Not too bad for stormy week and feast day ;}
Debbie in Napa Valley CA - up two pounds when I weighed yesterday. Really need to get back on track. Didn't walk at all last week and didn't track food at all.
Lanette in SW WA State – weight holding steady thanks to some IF – a few 16/8’s last week which kept me on track. Let’s see how the rest of the month goes – I know goodies will start showing up at the door which I’ll graciously take. I haven’t been good at rationing in the past so I hope any cookies and candy I get are stale, soggy, taste “funny” and otherwise inedible, lol. My average daily steps 6663 which is down considerably from last week.
