Hey cyclists: Summer is ending for the U.S., and the days are getting shorter.

How many miles do you think you can cycle in October? Each 100mi = one century.

I am challenging myself to 100 miles for October.

Come back each time you cycle and post your numbers. If you have a special experience while cycling, we want to know about it too. I'll tally it up for the month, and let you know how we all did.

I can say that I i will go for 200 this month. 10 a day 5 days a week, plus 20 each day on weekend, if I am good. Should be doable.

    10-1-11 21/200.

I'm in for 200 this month - weather's bound to start closing in by the end of the month, so can't see me repeating a 250+ month this side of next March unless I spend an inordinate time on the Turbo-Trainer, and I REALLY hope that's not going to happen.

Anyway - I've already kicked off with todays ride...

1/10/2011 - 24.40Km - (15.16 miles) - 1,457Kcal - local loop out of the front door, record breaking hottest day in october since they started keeping records!

Does spinning count for this challenge, or just outside cycling? If spinning counts, I'm in for 100 miles. Thanks!

Didn't quite make my 250 for Sept, but will try again for 250 in Oct. I'm not sure how many miles I do in spinning so I've never counted it - I'm sure I'd have made my target if I had done lol xx

    Good luck everyone :)

I'm in again for this challenge. I'm shooting for 200 miles. With the fall weather moving in, who knows how long it will be till the bike finds it's way onto the training stand.

    Picked up 40 miles today.

That is good. 17.3 mph average for 30 miles. My best ever was 17.1 average for 40 Miles. Any shorter distance and rate would have gone down. I was picking up going home with a breeze on my back.

Hey, what is the friction coeficient of a 23mm tire on packed gravel at 4mph??? Don't bother in taking out your calculators, I will tell you; it's ZERO.

So, today was one of THOSE rides. I checked my bike, found my stuff and got going. What I forgot to check was my shoes. One stop later I remembered that clipping out of the right pedal felt weird. I looked and noticed that one screw was missing. I dug out the hex wrench and tightened the two remaining. There was a head wind, so my speed was suffering. I pushed as hard as I could and got to an area where they are finishing a bridge. In this area, there is a spot with packed gravel. I slowed down to make a hard right. Before I knew it, my bike was on the ground sliding under a wooden wall.
As I got up off the floor, I tried to get my bike up, but the front wheel was stuck under the wall. I had to pull rather hard, and when I got the bike upright, I noticed that the handlebar was crooked. The tire was off center and also off round (a little). I loosened the bolts, put everything back where it should be, and started riding again, only to realize that the right brake lever was also in the wrong spot. I had to stop again, and fix it. By this time, the shoe clip was loose again. *sigh*
Only 20 miles ridden, and all this drama.

Wow Rick sorry to hear that? Great day's can be messed up with a bad bike ride. I switched to 25mm on my roadie until I get a few more pounds and learn to handle it a bit better. I think the handling I am almost there.

Boy it's flat around your way BikeNut5... 630ft of ascent in over 50 miles - I'm supposed to be taking it easy and avoiding the hills on doctors orders at the moment, and the flatest loop I can come up with is something like http://connect.garmin.com/activity/116934540 - around 460ft in just over 11 miles...

Wonder if my knee doctor would prescribe a 'plane ticket over your way
