Finished the two bread sauces. I packed them for the freezer in plastic bags, so that I could flatten them to take up less room. It worked fine. :D

The pharmacist has just rung me about changing from the Ramipril, which has given me an awful, intermittent cough. There is no way I can share a room with John when I start coughing. So they are changing me to Losartan, and I pick it up on Saturday morning. I will have a blood test and BP test in a fortnight or so, and she will ring me on the 9th to discuss results and dosage adjustment. It can affect the kidneys, so they keep an eye on it.
    Pleased about that conversation. :)

Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx

Kay ~ I had meniscus surgery on both knees and don't remember needing crutches or having problems walking after the surgery. That was probably 15 yrs before I had my first knee replacement. Hopefully you will do well and see a vast improvement after yours.

Debbie ~ How old is your MnL? Sure hope things will get better at some point soon for you and your husband

Lanette ~ Glad you are feeling a bit better today. I truly understand your feelings in seeing things begin to deteriorate around your property. We have lived in this house for over 30 yrs and there are so many things that need attention. My DH is really not interested in changing things but I keep hoping. LOL

Heather ~ Glad your brother's visit was a success.

Rebecca ~ Hugs and know that your sons will call during the next week.

    Hello, dear hearts,

Up too early because my traitorous brain knows I have an 8 a.m. appointment, and goosed me in the elbow when Corey's alarm went off. I know it's the elbow, because that's what hurt when I turned over! 😜

How it did it was a little weird, though. Woke up in the middle of one of those dreams that just cling to you like a smell that you can't get out of your nose... Dreamt I was hosting a dinner party for 24 people in a pizza restaurant, and missed out ordering enough for two people. Someone at the end of one of the tables had just asked me very loudly if I knew what it would do to those two people's digestive systems if they didn't get fed right then, and I yelled at them, "Do I LOOK I know what would happen to them?" when someone beside me poked me in the elbow and I woke up saying "Ow!" Dreams are weird.

Heather - Your Christmas dishes sound wonderful. Well, they would if I liked vegetables--but in all honesty, I'm not sure I've ever even seen a rutabaga in the flesh. So glad you had time with your brother, and happy for Edie (and her parents) that she got the scholarship she so richly deserved.

Rebecca - Knowing that no news is good news in the Navy is one thing, but being happy you haven't heard from them is something entirely different. Christmas is coming, and hopefully they'll both be able to call on the day or very near it! You might want to learn to crochet or something. It's a reasonably cheap craft to learn, and very absorbing.

Hope Annie and her dad are OK. She doesn't often go this long without checking in, and she hasn't been on MFP since Monday.

In family news, had a really nice long phone conversation with my brother last night. I only hear from him once or twice a year at most, and I let him do the calling. I will probably try to call him every once in a while. I do talk to my sis once every couple weeks, and it wouldn't kill me to talk to him once a month or so, as well.

All three of the brothers I grew up with have terminal conditions, and apparently this one now has an abdominal aortic aneurysm along with the lungs of a coal miner with black lung from 50 years of smoking. He has no intention of getting the aneurysm repaired. He'll be 66 soon, and apparently they are all in a race to the grave. The other two have terminal brain cancer and terminal heart disease, and will be 70 and 75, respectively, if they make it to their next birthdays. The one with cancer is the only one who quit smoking when he was in his 20s. I haven't actually spoken to the older two in many years, actually since long before I married Corey 15 years ago, but the oldest one always likes my posts on Facebook.

At a lot of levels, I just don't necessarily feel like shared genetics mean you have to love someone, or even like them that much. It happens - I love my sis, and care deeply about the brother who called. But I don't push that love on anyone, and don't see it as a requirement that they love me.

    Ah enough family philosophy,

Hope it's a good day, will check in later,
    Love,
    Lisa in AR

Oh yes so true! My youngest is learning that when I say "check in👍🏼😁" that he connects and that alone makes my heart sing. Little treasures in this day in age of kids not doing that.🙄💖

    Good morning ladies!

Debbie, I understand your mom's sadness at her situation. It sounds like your dad was like my DH - and Lisa's Corey and Pip's Kirby (and other of you ladies with talented husbands like that) ... able to build and do some pretty neat handy man type things. So I bet your mom is really missing your dad from that aspect too.

Also Debbie - your MIL would sure be in a mess if anything happened to your DH. In her state of dementia or orneriness or whatever motivates her, sounds like she doesn't realize it. Do you think your DH's dedication to her in spite of her nastiness to him is a cultural thing? Was she a snag to her husband? My DH spent some time in Okinawa during his last tour in the Marines and got to know them quite well, if he was here I'd ask him about this. ;)

Rita - interesting that your A1C jumped, but not surprising with what you've been going through. The last couple diabetes prevention zoom classes I've had have been about stress and what it does to our bodies - cortisol, insulin and all that. So even with eating right and getting some exercise, it can throw us into overdrive it seems. I have a hunch you'll be back on the program after the first of the year. Also glad to hear that otherwise your blood tests were good. Hope that UTI gets under control quickly.

It is hard and very overwhelming for mom- the property is big. We used to plant a full acre of garden. Each year since dad passed, it is getting smaller and not worked as much as it should.

This is the first time in her life, she is 81, that she is totally on her own. Married at 14 and married for just months shy of 65yrs.
She is missing him so much. Also, this time of year is harder because she is missing her parents and siblings(all gone), she doesn't hear from any of her 8 grandkids very often. Only one calls occasionally. He does come visit once a year from CO to work the garden for her which is great BUT, he is sure to load his truck up with tools and things that were my dad's each time. He almost walked off with my dh's guns that we were storing in dad's shop. He was actually carrying them and all of dad's guns to his truck when I stopped him. Mom didn't realize/remember that dh had some of his there. I didn't know which ones were his so he got none of them.
One sister used to call every night, rambling on about things mom didn't care to hear and talk for hours when mom just wanted to go to sleep- one time, while I was there, she thought she had hung up but hadn't and she said something about it- sister heard, called her back and told her what she heard. Mom said she was sorry but she was just very tired. Younger sister lives closer to mom than I but doesn't call or stop in. Mom doesn't care. Too much drama with that sister. I hear from her once every 6 months.

As for dh taking care of her. It is an obligation only, yes cultural thing I think. She is so demanding and thinks she deserves to have him wait on her for every thing, jump as soon as she mentions something or worse, mad at him if he doesn't realize she is out of something(like her cigerettes) and didn't buy them BEFORE she tells him she needs them.
She thinks we can put her in a home and she will get treated better. They will feed her exactly what she wants, she can treat them any way she wants, they will do everything little thing for her.
She will NOT be going in some fancy place like that. And, we will NOT be the one paying for it like she thinks- it will come out of her account.
She treated my FIL like this and to some extent to her other son(dh's half brother, her favorite). He was killed in a car accident. We don't know if it was a true accident or on purpose to get away from her- he lived at home and was just put on disability. He treated her the way she is now treating dh.)

As for the A1C and stress- Dh has found that stress is so much worse for his A1C than any food he eats.
He can eat a whole pizza and his sugar is pretty much normal but if he spends a few hours with his mother, it spikes it super high.
Between being diabetic and having high blood pressure- being around her is going to put him in the hospital or the morgue.

She will be 89 March 1st.
The only way this will get better for him is if we can find a home that will take AND keep her(and not kick her out) or she dies.
Sounds very cruel but that is it.

John had a lovely 'walk and talk' with Max. :) Apparently he didn't stop talking for two hours. John was very touched and pleased that he still enjoys coming to see him. They had a great bond when Max was young. I used to joke that they were best friends.
    So, a 13 year old, and a 79 year old. Precious. <3

My friend B in Glasgow has been complaining on our WhatsApp group about her 85 year old husband not noticing things deteriorating in the home. He missed an oil leak in the heating system that she had been smelling for months, and now they've had an emergency breakdown overhaul! Plus a water leak in the loft that he thought would wait until the next service. All done now by the same guy, but she is furious, as she has a house full over Christmas. Entropy indeed. Expensive entropy.

John bought Dover Sole from the fish market yesterday. We are having them on Boxing Day. Ridiculous price, :o but it's once a year. We have been known to have them on Christmas Day, when it's just us.

Love you all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx

    :) Some food for thought:

Author Francois de La Rochefoucauld reminds us that we often justify our mistakes rather than addressing them:

"We try to make virtues out of the faults we have no wish to correct."

Yay, I bought no candy, cookies or chocolate at the commissary. During this time of year, my willpower is shot, and the commissary has a special row of holiday treats. So I bought cottage cheese, brie bites, wild rice, cucumber, mushrooms, radishes, cheese slices, turkey, some everything bagels, and a turkey pot pie. My only vice is some Fritos because I was going to buy some chili, but I forgot that part.😂
Did I tell you I am on Social Security? Should start in Jan. I am also getting spousal disability included because I am married. It will be $600+ which isn't a lot, but I also didn't work a lot during my lifetime. Well of course I worked but I didn't get paid for it! We are going to look for another car during the spring, and the car payment will come from my SS. It wil be nice to have a car that handles long trips better, better seat, cruise control etc, but we want it to get as good of gas mileage as our Spark.

That is what my SS is and I have worked for the past 40 plus years. I have been self employed most of that time so my input into SS is a lot lower. Not a lot of $$ but, better than nothing. It doubles my personal income each month with what I get for watching Ezie.

I know if it was just me, I would be hurting! But if I hadn't have been married with kids, I probably would've worked my entire life.

Just finished "building" the lasagna. Garfield would be proud! I am not eating any because my lunch of an egg salad sandwich didn't quite settle. Well I think what happened was the bread must've had a moldy spot I didn't see. Its a hearty grain and seed bread, and I didn't notice anything. Of course when I finished, the moldy taste was all I tasted. *Shivered*. I will have a small cup of peppermint vodka to kill anything that's growing in my belly!😂😂😂

    A very annoying morning! :p
The battery on the smoke alarm decided to chirp at 4.30 this morning. Didn't get back to sleep. :#
We replaced a battery in the hall alarm a couple of years ago, with the help of YouTube, so I anticipated a similar easy fix. Unfortunately, it's in a very difficult position at the top of a flight of stairs, so it's difficult. I revised the procedure with John on YouTube, but the alarm most definitely was not complying. He could not get the cover off, despite following video instructions. I was standing on the bend of the stairs, in case he fell. :o Many tries, and rewatching the videos later, we gave up and I messaged my son. He is coming in half an hour, but I'm not sure he will be able to get it off. He is a few inches taller than John, so he can see better.
John obviously is frustrated and annoyed with himself. :|:#
Fortunately, the battery has completely given up now, so it's stopped chirping. :)

I also have boiled the carrots and swede for the Christmas mash, (not mashed yet), and I had so many carrots left, I made a quick carrot/curry soup. Just got to whizz it up for lunch with streaky bacon crumbled on top, some sourdough toast, and cheese. .

I also cut my toenails and plucked some random hairs. :p
So a morning not entirely wasted. But it feels frustrating.

I'm recording 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes' this afternoon, to watch tonight. I'm sure I've seen it, but I don't remember it.

Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx
