Good morning all! I've been a bit MIA with a trip to Hilton Head Island this past week, doing some volunteer work at Operation Christmas Child, getting ready for the holidays, etc. but I finally caught up on reading and liking and hugging! Lots of activity while in HHI - running, walking, biking and even went to a gym for some weight lifting one day.
I was feeling the cold here yesterday but I made myself go to our local park and ran 5 miles on the trail there. It was one of those where I had to force myself to keep going and just get it done.
@tarun_yadavA - Congratulations on reaching 2000+ miles for the year! No pictures of a sloth?
@daria0919 - Definitely get a second opinion from a sports doctor. Someone in your running group can probably recommend someone.5 -

I can see a lot of you use Strava, do you find it good? I only use my Garmin, would you recommend having Strava too?
I use Strava for the community feature. You can easily see what activities your friends have done and like and comment on it. You can link your Garmin to Strava and the activity automatically uploads to there. Come join us there!5 -
Got 7 in this morning.... only 9 more days left in the year. wow. that went fast. Went out before dawn because I had gotten up and I sort of like the peacefullness of early morning runs. Ran by a skunk who was trundling off rapidly away from me so no threat and very few dog walkers out. The dawn was simply amazing as there were low clouds and the sky around the red ball sun was on fire. I really enjoyed seeing that and along with the lower humidity and cooler air managed to push my pace. I even had a 9:10 split altho I admit I was trying to get the .25 mile under the 9 min pace. Calculated I need to avg 4.3 miles the rest of the year to match my running from last year and that will make this my month with the most mileage.
A friend gifted me 2 amaryllis this year and I am totally impressed by how easy these are. I had pretty much given up on having them in the house due to causing gnats and basically being messy but look at this self contained beauty. I also found a neighbor with heavenly blue morning glories which were a lot easier to get good photos of.

Nice run @Teresa502 . It's just hard to get out there some days. Looks like you had a really nice trip to Hilton Head.
@SummerSkier Great speedy run this morning. The sky sounds lovely. Beautiful flower pictures!2 -

I did my normal Sunday rest day walk on the treadmill. It was a busy day and I really didn't have time for anything more.
I did make the other two batches of Super Hero Muffins between church, lunch, practice for a Christmas Eve church service, running a couple of errands, and taking care of the neighbor's animals for them. It was a busy day.

I ran 11 miles today. The temperature wasn't too bad, but it was a little windy so it was chilly running into the wind. It was a good run, but pretty uneventful.

I met a friend for 4.70 miles this morning. It was 19F and chilly but it was nice seeing the Christmas lights in the downtown area.5

Nice @kgirlhart .
You are braver than me @Teresa502 , even though with no wind, it wasn't horrible out this morning.4 -
Good running everyone.
It's been an eventful week. Been lying low on a taper, stuffing my face, err carb loading for a weekend race. Quite the race report.
Did a 20 miler trail race on Saturday. Totals were 33.7km and 1090m of elevation gain, average 0c. Perfect temps, now if the ice would go away. Skied on ice a few times. Had to collect 3 wrist bands from 3 different legs. Yay.
This race was epic. Being the klutz I am, managed to trip on a tree root going downhill, flip, fly and do a tumble, banged up lots of bits, knees, chin plus a badly cut finger:/. Managed to bruise the left big toe joint too during the unintended acrobatic stunt (intended? was fussing with something then) and I still had 22km to go. Got it done. Kept thinking about what was needed for selection.
Best part was I didn't even know I was cut until later I saw I had blood everywhere, after I stopped to delayer and took my glove off. I was wondering why it was so hard to get the glove back on after the tumble earlier. Now I know. Never knew a finger could drip so much red stuff, Looked like a mini shark had a deep bite. I won't post that gory pic. That one is on facebook lol.
Toilet paper makes for a good emergency dressing and a glove a good bandage. Pro tip a black glove is awesome at hiding blood. Thanks all the first aid wilderness training I've had to stem that. Still had 9 km then to the next aid station for some bandaids. Just don't try to take it off later, ask me how I know. I just ripped the glove off. The aid station crew wasn't terribly impressed about me dripping all over their table and food, reaching for the kitchen towel roll aka emerg dressing Right now finger still stings a lot.
Probably lost 15mins race time dealing with this. Here's how you know you are a racer. I am trying to stem the bleeding and all I can think about is how much time I'm loosing in the race...lol Note to self, remember to bring the first aid bag next time.
Don't remember the rest of the race much. Was so focused on not having a tumble repeat and the throbbing toe. At least the scenery was nice when I bothered to look up.
Am at 143 of 150km this month. 2243kms for the year.
Feeling it in every joint these days. Sigh aging....

Sorry it has taken me so long to get my race report done. It's just been really hectic since the race. And, sorry it is so long. I could never work for Reader's Digest. LOL
On the morning of the race, I got up at 3 am...yes, a miracle happened in case you missed it. I took Tippy out the door for a really short walk, ate my breakfast of champions (McDonalds egg and cheese biscuit), had coffee, and tried to hang around as long as I could for the coffee to kick in.
I got dressed and was out the door at 5:05. The race didn't start until 7:30, but I know from past experience that getting to the starting line is a long process and can take forever, so you want to be early. The moon had been shining really brightly when I took Tippy out to pee, but on the way to the base and the skid strip (where the shuttle orbiter landed years ago), it started to rain. It rained pretty hard, but not a FL torrential downpour. Once I got parked, it had quit. I looked at the radar and it looked pretty clear, so was convinced and happy that the rain was over.
I put my race dots on my bib. Per the directions, I had tried it while I was still at the Airbnb to make sure I understood the logistics of putting them on correctly so as not to lose part of them in the car. It was actually much easier than they made it sound like it would be. The video I watched had said to only use 3 unless it was really windy. I started out with just three, but had to get back in the car and put on the forth because it was very windy.
My race dots, in case you didn't see them earlier.
It was really dark at that time of day, but the walk was pretty well lit. I walked to the security check point and then onto the bus to be dropped off nearly a mile from the starting line. I had hoped they had changed that, but no luck. The total amount of walking just to get to the start was right at a mile.
Shot from in front of my car to help identify where I parked after the race. It was easier this year though because they also had numbered flags up and I was between 13 and 14.
Waiting for the start
Still waiting. Some shot after it got lighter.
I used the port=a-potty and got in the group about 7. If they had an opening ceremony, I couldn't hear it from where i was. They really need speakers further back in the crowd. Anyway, I lined up with the 12 min/mile pacer. He was a really nice guy and we chatted until we started. He said his strategy for that pace was to run 3 min/walk 1 min. I decided to keep up with him as long as I could. His wife was pacing the 10 min group, I think. He said she had ran like 18 marathons and was more of a runner than him, but you could tell that his normal pace was way way faster than 12 min/mile.
The people in front of me at the starting line.
The people behind me.
Almost as soon as they started the race, it started misting and just kept getting a little bit harder and harder. By mile 2, it was a pretty good down pour. I wish I had gotten a picture of the person in front of me because the wind was blowing so hard from the right that everyone's right side was soaked, but our left side stayed dry. Thankfully, it did quit by about mile 3. I'm really glad I had bought the sleeves and had them on. Once the sun came out later, I took them off, but I did need them at the start and during the rain. I was able to keep up with the pacer for the first 3 miles. (Paces were 11:53, 11:48, and 12:16) Then I slowed for water and to eat a peanut butter cracker and they were gone. Also, about that time, we turned into the wind and it felt like it was blowing me backwards. I decided to walk a bit more that mile so that I didn't expend all of that extra energy trying to run into the wind. (13:25 min) It never became a tail wind, but we did get to where it was blowing from the side again, so was a little easier to run.
Half of the rainbow after it quit raining. It was a full one, but couldn't get it in just one picture. At least that was a bright spot to the rain.
I felt pretty good through mile 7, then I started loosing my mojo. I was still able to maintain a decent pace with all the walking I was doing. (Splits 5-10 were 12:26, 13:17, 13:05, 13:58, 13:43, 13:56, and the last 0.17 at 12:27. Garmin said I went 10.17 miles). Garmin finish time was 2:11:57 and 10.17 miles. The unofficial time was 2:12:02. I need to go back and check to see if that turned out to be the official time. Overall I was pleased with the race as I beat my previous record for it by over 2 min.
Some pictures from along the way are in the spoiler.
Selfie of wet me with the TN state flag.
Blue Origin site. We ran pretty close to this and a guy was standing there telling us pictures weren't allowed. I didn't see anything that a picture could show that would be interesting to anyone, plus, once we got passed the immediate area it just made everyone want to stop and get a picture. LOL
This one may have been Space X. I'm not positive.
Finish line was in sight. Time for the last minute push.
Me ringing the bell.
They don't have a lot of bling at this race. We did get a shirt, medal, and patch. I bought a running hat too.
Bling
Close up of the medal and patch.
The line for the buses back to the parking area was long, but at least they had busses this year. After being dropped off though, the walk was another 0.44 miles to the car.
I pulled it up and my official time was 2:12:02. Overall pace was 13:13 min/mile. I was 6th out of 14 women 65-69, 121st out of 171 military females, 454th out of 553 military, and 903rd out of 1202 overall. So, a little bit in the back of the pack, but I'm okay with that.
Overall, it was a good race. I did feel stronger this year than I have in the past.

@WarmJellyfish That sounds like a cold tough race! Sorry about your horrible tumble. Glad nothing was broken. You did great!1
-
@WarmJellyfish It sounds like you had quite a race! Blood and all. Maybe the adrenaline made it so you didn’t realise you had cut yourself so badly when it happened? And running is not usually such a comfortable experience as is . I am glad you didn’t fall again but sucks that it was in the beginning.
and @quilteryoyo I was very glad to read your race report. I am not such a big fan of wind myself. It makes things so much more difficult! But it sounds like you mastered it regardless. I am glad that it didn’t rain on you the whole time!
@tarun_yadavA You are so close!!!! I hope you are enjoying your vacation and that you can manage to squeeze those last few miles in. ….even if you have to run in lots of circles or around tiny airports;). I have been thinking about my goals for next year and am seriously considering trying to run the year myself next year .
I had a nice run this morning but the weather was quite unpleasant. Ice cold rain and some very muddy slushy spots! Ick. I was wishing it was snow (which we haven’t had yet this year). I even ran on the road part of the route, which I usually avoid, but I thought I might as well change things up a bit. The final 10 minutes I picked up the pace. I guess marathon training has commenced. I ran 12.1km.
172.8/200km for December.5 -
@quilteryoyo super jealous you got to do a race by Space Force and next to the launch pads!
@Laurz9191thanks. I landed in some snow too so that was a factor freezing the hand. These are what memories are made of! Battle scar stories over a campfire, that time a land shark bit me on the finger....
@tarun_yadavA I remember there was this fella who ran a whole marathon on his apartment balcony during covid.5 -
@WarmJellyfish what a race experience! 😮 Sorry you had such a rough day, but huge kudos on the effort!
@quilteryoyo great race report! You put as much energy into the report as the actual race 😁 Super job!
@tarun_yadavA you're so close I can taste it 😋 Hope y'all are having a great time!
I think I might be done running for the year. I felt some pain behind my left knee on Saturday but I thought it would go away. It didn't. And I was limping pretty badly on Sunday morning. Still hurts after sitting a while and when walking. Just going to rest and try to go into 2025 fresh.
Happy Holidays everyone!!7 -
@Laurz9191 Thanks. I'm glad it didn't rain the entire race too. I can't imagine running in icy cold rain. You did great.
@WarmJellyfish It's a great destination race if you are into space and the Space Force. It's just their third year, so I think they still have a few kinks to work out, but they are getting there.
Thanks @Scott6255 . I knew the race report would be long. That's why I kept putting off starting it. I'm so sorry that you are having pain behind your knee. Do you have any idea what is causing it? I hope rest days is all it hits and you'll be hitting the ground running on New Year's Day!2 -

62.67/80 mile goal
I worked at daycare, 2 year old class, today from 8 - 4:50 ish. I ran during my break. I always seem to go faster on that route..it is a bit less hilly. I walked 0.20 miles, ran 2.00 miles, and walked 0.30 miles. My running avg pace was 11:53 min/mile. Splits were 12:43 (included the warm up walk because I forgot to hit the segment button), 12:00 and the "extra" 0.20 miles was at a 9:42 min/mile pace. I was pretty pleased overall as I didn't really feel like I was pushing it. The temp was 45F (7.2C), so a little chilly in the shade, but not too bad.
I wrote my race report while the kids were napping. I'm trying to use my time wisely for the next few days as I really have a few too many irons in the fire.5 -

I got 5 miles in this morning. It was 57° and a little windy, but overall a good run. I didn't see any critters on the run, but the dogs did have a possum cornered in the back yard this morning when I was getting ready to head out.
@scott6255 I hope the rest is all you need.
Great race reports @quilteryoyo and @warmJellyfish.
@Teresa502 Kudos for getting out there!19F is too cold for me.
5 -
@Scott6255 I hope your knee feels better soon and that rest helps!!!
This morning I got out for a 10.4km easy run.
No icy rain today, just the usual grey skies . We are having a falafel Christmas Eve party later - so I will be busy today cooking and hosting .
183.2/200km for December.8 -
@scott6255 sorry about your knee but sounds like a good plan to rest it. These strange injuries and aches and pains are really annoying.....
@quilteryoyo I really enjoyed reading that race report. It may be long but you should be a writer I think! And I did not realize you got rained on so much. Seems like strange weather there every year so far. Congrats again on a PB and super racing! 👏👏👏
@AlphaHowls how are those toes doing? I see you are trying to keep your mileage low...
@daria0919 how are those tendons doing? I see some activity on strava!
@warmJellyfish I think cold keeps us from realizing things like bleeding and such. What an exciting race that was. I don't think I could have done any of it. CONGRATULATIONS and there is a saying somewhere that if you don't put some blood into it, it's not worth doing? or some weird thing like that. 😳🙃😳 PS we are all gruesome some sharing injury pix is all good here. 😎
@Teresa502 19F !!!! holy moly. I think I know where all the AC is. It's almost 70 here this morning and will be sweating badly with the humidity. Oh well after your Hilton head beach running such a huge change.
car inspection rant!So I have been a little anxious about getting my car inspection completed as my registration is due the end of this month. Unfortunately a few weeks back I had to have the battery changed which resets all those stupid emission monitor thingies and the first time I took it in I had forgotten and I failed as the sensors (2 o2 and evap) had not reset.
Well I went and drove it around for almost 100 miles and dangit it failed again 2 weeks later. Starting to panic a little bit thinking I was going to have to be driving on an expired registration to get all those dang sensors to have enough miles and data to pass. (here in Tx you cannot register without inspection - emissions only starting next year). Anyway, it was not that anything was failing but it was just the sensors would not set. So last week I called the dealer and they said - you have to drive 200 miles - normal driving not like one big trip.
OK I did that but dang it one sensor (EVAP) was still not ready altho now the O2 ones were. I have a little computer reader for the car so at least I was smart enough to check it myself instead of going to the shop and wasting time. Then I read on the internet when I was trying to find what the magic formula was for resetting this sensor was that you can PASS inspection with one of them incomplete. Hmmm. So I went to one of the places I know on Sat and they said. No you cannot. hmmm. And I know this one place has been doing inspections for a long time - like more than 10 yrs!
Yesterday I drove to the dealer and talked to a service advisor (what an idiot turns out). He said I needed to replace the sensor!!!!! well crap. So I went back to my mechanic, and he said that was BS as that system is an entire series of things not just one thing you replace. Anyway, he said that yes you CAN pass with it not reset yet as that one can take a really long time to check all the things. 😖😳 So I got it inspected again and it passed. So much misinformation out there... I feel like the people I did ask should have been experts but just did not really care enough or were just trying to get rid of me.
I wonder why sometimes the ticker resets all the way and sometimes it lets me just add mileage?

Merry Christmas, my MFP family! I will be back with a vengeance on Thursday. May this Christmas bring happiness and peace to you. All my best wishes to you this Christmas.7 -
Nice run @kgirlhart . Possums can be mean when cornered, like all of us, I guess. I hope all the animals went away unscathed.
@Laurz9191 Nice run this morning. Your party sounds like fun. Enjoy!
Thanks @SummerSkier . Yep, the weather has been interesting for that race every year. I think maybe the first year was the best, but I really don't remember what it was like - I think cool and then hot, but not unbearable. So, that one may be the best I can expect for FL in Dec. So sorry about the inspection hassle. I hate it when the "experts" all tell you different things. And, you would think you could just show them the receipt that you changed the battery and get an extension at least. Crazy. I'm glad we don't have to be inspected in TN.
Thanks @capewrathultra . Merry Christmas to you too.
5 -
@Scott6255 sorry to hear about the knee. I had a similar problem awhile back so I followed some knee strengthening exercises which helped. Plus a ton of advil...
@quilteryoyo I have fond memories of the Kennedy Space Centre. Might be another reason to go back. Now if only the CAD dollar isn't tanking so much against the USD
@SummerSkier Ahhh yes, blood sweat and tears. Definitely all three made it memorable. Glad your car passed the inspection.
@capewrathultra merry christmas too!
@AlphaHowls I don't seem to be in the Strava group....
@kgirlhart that's some nice mileage

Hi all
Got in 5.0M at 09"53.
Now down to less than 10 miles. Ive got NYE in Tamarindo pencilled in - so 🤞🏽 I should nail it then!
(Don't care if it's a sandy beach, or torrential tropical thunderstorms... Or both! )
@quilteryoyo thanks for race report! And I did see the little plane take off today!
@WarmJellyfish amazing! ... And damn!!!
@Laurz9191 you could totally nail it... You're gonna finish this year at around 1800. Totally doable!
@teresa502 sloth!!!
If I get time... I will write about our near-death Night safari
7 -
I had to work today but I left early and went for a run. Got 4 miles done. It was nice running in the daylight and at warmer temps.
Dang @WarmJellyfish you are a beast! Congratulations on the race and I hope you are healing good.
I enjoyed reading your race report @quilteryoyo thanks for taking time to write it and share with us.
@Scott6255 I hope some rest will get your knee happy again!
Thanks for the sloth pictures @tarun_yadavA and do tell about the safari experience!
Merry Christmas everyone! Wishing you peace, joy and happiness!5 -
@WarmJellyfish I’ve signed up for three 2025 races already, the Hannover marathon in April, the half marathon in my city in May, and an obstacle course 12k in August , which is kind of a team race. I need to have some future races on the calendar to keep motivation up for the times I need it, like now when the sun never makes an appearance .
@tarun_yadavA Near-death night safari? Stay safe over there!4 -
@Teresa502 @Laurz9191 thanks all good now.
Soooooo.....
Last night, we did a night safari.
Not booked through the hotel.
Long story short: It was terrifying!!!!!
Our guide asked what we were interested in seeing. So said kids wanted to see snakes and spiders ...
The guy went rogue!!
We went to a village - El Tigre. Not in the national park. Just Outside it.
It was pitch dark.... Guy took us well off beaten track. There was no one else there. NO ONE. No other tourists.
Pure horror movie stuff.
.
We went past the NP sign. It was closed. He took us another way. Past some tiny village of 2-3 shacks and scooters... Opened a gate. Pulled some barbed wire... And that's where we entered from. (Warning sign #1)
He coulda been a serial killer. In the middle of nowhere. At his, and nature's mercy.
Anyways, after 20 mins, and a few sightings, he didn't kill us.
But... the next 90mins...
Wet. Covered in mud. Slippery.
But guy wasnt that good. He knew route in dark. Spotted a few things. But...
Pitch dark.
Single file line, with him Infront.
In the dark, walking on mud and leaves (where snakes likely to be). Coulda easily stepped on one.
My youngest was just Infront of me, wit me last.
My youngest spotted snakes go past TWICE. that he missed.
Saw everything but glad to be alive7 -
