Rebecca ... you mentioned in your post that you spoke with your "post sailor younger son?" What did I miss or did I read that wrong. Is your youngest out of the Navy?

Beth ~ Your Christmas photos are lovely. Love the entrance to you home and the photo of you, son, and your mom!

I'm thawing out the two Dover Soles, but, unfortunately, I hadn't seen them before John put them in the freezer. They are HUGE. He started on the Christmas cake this afternoon, so neither of us will be starving this evening. I have discussed it with him, and we've decided to eat just one tonight, and have the other one tomorrow. Unfortunately, they are welded together with ice, so I can't put one back in the freezer! They were sooooooo expensive as well. I would have separated them before I froze them, or asked the fishmonger to separate them, but then ......... he's a man.
Otherwise, I'm still working on my glutes, and think I'm making progress!
Beyond Paradise tonight.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxxx
If you can pry them apart while they are still partially frozen, you can put the second one back in the freezer and enjoy it later1 -
Barbie: I am so sorry to read of your loss. My sympathy to you and your family. I will be thinking about you in these first days and in the year ahead. Peace to you and your family. Some blogs talk about the landing to widowhood. I hope and pray your landing to widowhood goes as smoothly as it can. I know Jake would want this very much for you.
Best,
Rosemarie from GA5 -
Awe Barbie, you are doing everything right, and Jake would be so proud of you. Just click in when you can on here. We can start January post for you, (I don't have a clue but someone can do that). Big hugs!
Oh Lanette, my present price for a haircut is $60 at a Hair and Spa place. Its pretty swanky, but I feel really good after she's cut it, and there's no "helmet hair" feeling like from Supercuts. Plus they give you a mimosa while you wait. Also a shampoo beforehand, which Supercuts doesn't do at the one here. No water treatment.

Anyone here having issues with packages getting to where they need to be? I sent a package with a new phone, iPad, and I watch, to my son on December 7. It got stuck in Texas for a really long time before it moved on to another stop in Texas. From there it took a week to get to Massachusetts, where it now has been sitting for 5 days. It is now 20 days late. I’ve contacted the Post Office and the final PO stop has called me twice with no new information, only for me to keep checking the tracking, which I do every day. It was supposed to be delivered today, my son’s 40th birthday. Today’s, or rather yesterday’s update was that it will be delivered, but late. Springfield Mass. is only 40 minutes from where my son is. SMH

I had a little delay in former hubby getting his package but not the long delay you have had. His was supposed to be there on Friday, he got it really late Monday night. His parents who also live in Indiana(an hour or so apart I think) were supposed to get theirs Saturday and it did arrive Saturday just a few hours later than the tracking said.

haircuts- last real hair cut I had at a salon was almost 10 yrs ago and that was a trim. Daycare girls grandma trimmed and colored my hair before my class reunion- color didn't last very long, which was ok because I wasn't thrilled with the streaks, looked colored, not natural.
I trim mine simply by putting it in a braid, and cut the bottom inch off.2 -
Rita ... I have a package that's coming from a vendor that's been stuck in Flower Mounds, TX since 12/13. I've contacted the vendor and they don't know what the hold-up is, so they're making and sending me a new item. I don't know why it went from New York to Texas anyways since it's headed to me in New York! Shipping most definitely slowed down around the 2nd week of December and I saw on the news that it won't get better until after the third week in January due to Christmas returns.
Lanette ... I forgot to answer your question. I had a screening mammogram in November that needed a follow up diagnostic mammo and then a core biopsy. "Columnar cell duct hyperplasia for atypia tissue with microcalcifications." In other words, non cancerous cells that are growing/misbehaving and have the propensity to change to cancer ... so they need removed. It's a pretty simple procedure, but will need general anesthesia so I'll have to go through all of that pre-op stuff later in January.
I'm glad it's Friday.

Just got back from picking up dog meds at the Vet and filling up the Subaru. Decided to go down to a gas station close to I-5 and the price was $.50 a gallon cheaper than what I paid in town last month. Score!
About McAfee & Antivirus -what happened with McAfee is that I stopped the "auto-renew" feature a month or so ago. Ever since then, I get about half a dozen pop-ups throughout the day saying "we found X number of viruses or spam or something or other" on your computer and removed them. Make sure to renew or your computer will be at risk!" That type of thing. McAfee was bundled for "a year for no charge, then auto-renew" when I bought this laptop from Staples over 4 years ago. DH wasn't mentally with it enough to help me.
Microsoft Windows comes with it's own anti-virus which is pretty robust, called Defender. It used to be called Security Essentials. When DH was teaching at the college, they were beta-testers for Microsoft. DH was happy with the MS anti-virus and that's what the college used. When I bought a Dell this spring, I had a good chat with the guy at the computer store where I bought it about anti-virus and he also said the MS Defender can't be beat. Plus it's free and automatic. DH did run an anti-spam concurrently on all of our machines as well, I need to look into that. Ad aware maybe?
Sounds like the little Chromebook has its own type of anti-virus. I'm getting to like it more and more.
Kylia - thanks for the heads-up about the update. I've been getting the new Dell figured out
so I'm ready for this HP to implode or at least be sidelined if it acts funny, lol.
Rita - I know Amazon shipping has been messed up for the whole month and they use USPS in most cases. I was waiting on a shipment of mixed nuts which was supposed to be here last Saturday. Then I got a "delayed" email. Then earlier this week I got a "your shipment is on the way and will be here Friday (today). Then yesterday I got an email that it's once again delayed. Then today, an email that says "it has shipped and will be here JANUARY 8th" . I guess they plan to put it on a shelf somewhere for a couple weeks. Not sure if that's Amazon's shelf or USPS shelf. Hope your son's gifts arrive soon, what a hassle.
Beth - love your photos of you and mom and son. Now that's some snow - beautiful entry by the way. Glad your son is doing well and crossing fingers there's no repeat. Pleurisy? Hmm. Glad nothing major showed up. How are his migraines these days? Thank you for the info on your breast surgery, good to get it taken care of early.
Thanks to everyone who answered my question about hair cutting prices. The haircut I have in my photo here was $60 ten years ago and the best haircut I ever had. She has probably doubled her prices by now and her shop was closed for a while when she was on maternity leave.
Rita - I used to buy nuts out of a bin and they were always fresh. Sadly, that store closed. I found a package of Diamond walnuts buried in my freezer, they'd probably been there for a year. I opened them - smelled fresh, tasted fine. I'm going to write a letter to Diamond Walnuts enclose the bad smelling packages. The fact that these nuts came from 2 different stores is puzzling.

Lovely photos Beth. I remember your son when he was a teenager.
Debbie - By the time I could prize the fish apart without damage the outer parts were well thawed. It's OK. I can have the other fish tomorrow with rice, peas, and a cream sauce. Tonight's was great with the brown shrimp. It really is the most fantastic fish.

Rebecca ... you mentioned in your post that you spoke with your "post sailor younger son?" What did I miss or did I read that wrong. Is your youngest out of the Navy?
Beth
Youngest sailor son is my son that stopped chatting with me and family from 2020 to 2023. By then he had transferred and the Navy couldn't disclose where he transferred to. So I went on anti depression meds for a couple months. Husband wrote in a mass email to all my sons that I was on the meds due to not hearing from (insert younger sons name). Both my other sons had known this, but youngest didnt.
So he called in August of 2023 and its been great since then. He's grown up a lot since then.
He was diagnosed with Crohn's disease since his transfer to a ship in Japan. Then he got foot and mouth disease, he was a mess. So after getting diagnosed, he's had 2 infusions of a medicine that suppresses the Crohn's symptoms and is in a Navy medical hold situation, until orders are made for him to transfer to San Diego. He's feeling well and the infusions do their job. In the States he'll continue treatment, until they can figure out if he stays in the Navy or has to get out. He has accepted both scenarios. Actually he knows if he can continue to get infusions which should taper to a yearly thing, then he will be able to be a veteran, go to college, and live symptom free. He said he wants to relocate to Whidbey island so he's close to family. Which warmed this ol' mommas heart.

Rebecca ~ So glad youngest son wants to be back with family. That would be great and a real relief of not knowing where he could be. If he can get into college like your middle son, it will give him a much secure place to be. I hope your oldest son will continue to excel in his Navy career. You and your husband look great in your latest photos.

Years ago, one of my daycare kid's (who lived with her grandparents), the grandpa worked at the docks where the big fishing ships came in. He would bring in fresh fish quite often. Quite often during crab season he would come in with large bags of Dungenous crab legs- He had brought the crabs home live, cooked them and gave me the legs. They only wanted the body.
He would bring in all kinds of different kinds of fresh fish. I remember him bringing in both Patrolli(sp?) sole and Dover sole along with so many other types. I really miss that. Miss the girl too- Sasha was a great kid. Didn't like it when the grandma kept putting off paying me until she owed $2500 and then left a note in my mail box saying she wasn't coming back. Eventually, with a threat of taking her to court, she paid most of what she owed. She was the second one that got that far behind. The first was the mom actually passed away and the dad didn't have the money and they lost their house.
Now I never let anyone get that far behind

From way back pgs 7-11, Lanette and Rori where did you find/which brand of hydroxyapatite containing toothpaste did you get? DDS has been watching an old crown and found some “stickiness” at the edge, but didn’t even try to sell me on a treatment plan until the implant$ are done. Would like to head off further drilling. . . ;}
Today’s gratitude: taking a moment to consider.iPhone fixer closed again today. Nearest open fixit shop is in Arcata 2 hrs south. Almost dashed down there (I am really struggling without MY phone) but then realized I couldn’t leave Joe home alone for 5+ hours when I told him I’d only be gone for two. Store will be open tomorrow and I’ll probably go then. Joe wants me to wait tile the shop in town opens up on Jan 2, but I don’t think I can . . .Later, lighter, lovelies!

Barbara. i’m so sorry you are dealing with phone issues. I would be going crazy.
Barbie, you continue to be in my thoughts.
I ventured out to the pharmacy and grocery store today. My knee was screaming at me in the store. I could not have finished my shopping if I had not had the cart to act as a walker. Part of my problem was that it didn’t feel that bad this morning, so I didn’t take any pain meds. It has settled down now that I have medicated and elevated it.
Beth, your pictures are lovely. I hope your son is feeling better. The diagnosis, or lack thereof, must be frustrating.4 -

My eldest son has only a couple more years then he can retire. We have all chatted about getting a one level home (impending limitations) with some property on Whidbey. Then both eldest and youngest could each have a tiny home on the property, with a huge area for meals, a garden area, and a garage with work area so eldest can rebuild scooter a like he likes. Eldest really has no desire to learn to cook, but youngest likes to tinker. So tiny homes have small kitchens just what they need. It would be awesome!

My Dell came with McAfee and it was a pain to get rid of. As you say, Windows Defender is fine and doesn't make other software slow when it runs like Norton used to do.
I run Malwarebytes now and then to check on things. Thanks to everyone who answered my question about hair cutting prices. I go to the cheapest place in my city and it is $40 for a straight cut across the bottom of my long hair. No shampoo, no styling, no mimosa. I've looked around and just about anywhere else would be $80 and up for that.
Did you check the best before date on the nuts?
But sometimes nut manufacturers seem to have a run of rancid nuts.
I used to work in a bulk food shop with bins of nuts and all sorts of other things. We were careful about not allowing people to sample the food with their fingers and ensuring what we put out was fresh. I'm not as confident about the bulk food sections in a grocery store.

Heather - I’m with you, it’s hard not thinking about Barbie and her loss.
I bought Rodger a new pepper grinder for Christmas, it came with a smoked pepper, I bought it at one of the craft shows I did.
Sometimes those small things make a huge diffference.
Lanette - I’m happy you had a nice Christmas visit. It’s nice when people are included. We’ve had different people at our house over the years. I quite enjoy it.
I hadn’t read any of the books on your list except Firefly Lane. I enjoyed it and sent my copy to my BF afterwards. There is also a Netflix series based on the book. I read the book and watched the series far enough apart that it didn’t annoy me. I ordered a book for myself yesterday, I was really expecting it for Christmas. It was released in November and is the second in a trilogy.
Barbie - The biggest hugs to you. I’m glad you have people reaching out.
Rita - Shipping is a disaster here right now because we had a postal strike, because of that the courier companies became overwhelmed.
Beth - I love your photos.
If one of my girls don’t cut my hair for me I go to Great Clips.
I had a pretty relaxing day. I went to the scrapbook store that Rodger bought me a gift certificate for. I bought a kit to make myself a mini Christmas album. I was going to work on it this evening but spent the evening cleaning up my craftroom.
This afternoon I started to install the new backlight for the tv that I bought Rodger for Christmas. It wasn’t the type of light he wanted so I ordered the correct one and asked my friend that ordered the original one for me to start the refund process.
I’ll have to take it to be shipped off tomorrow.
The young lady in my life that was expecting twins was scheduled for her C-section this morning at 8am. I haven’t heard anything from her, I hope she’s just resting, I’m worried.
I’m sitting here with my Grandpup Ember. She has taken up my comfy spot on the couch.
This was her earlier today wanting me to let her outside after I made her come inside for scaring a cat and it running up into a tree. She just stood there barking at the poor cat!
I was struggling not to laugh at her.
I had a nice surprise text today from a girl I went to school with. She was visiting my Mom’s roommate. The roommate also gave me her number and told me i can call my mom anytime.
Maybe I’ll head off to bed.
