JANUARY 2025 Monthly Running Challenge
WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the DECEMBER 2024 Monthly Running Challenge which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10928141/december-2024-monthly-running-challenge/p1?new=1
Anyone can join in, new and old, and if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch. You never need to be ashamed of your miles. If you are making the effort, you will find only support here.
Here are the details from last month that apply again:
Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until JANUARY 1, 2025 to start logging your runs!
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:

After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the bookmark in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.comandcreate your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:
Use the link that ends in .png
Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
Remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow. There's no judgment, we all started somewhere. And no comparisons, except with your former self. Don't compare your Chapter 1 to somebody else’s Chapter 20.

You may see some phrases / words that are unique to our little group when it comes to describing some of our runs. It is a mash-up of words that seem to best describe the way the run felt that day. Here are some examples. Feel free to come up with your own to add to the dictionary 😃

I'm in for 20 miles.9

Thanks @AlphaHowls for getting us started for 2025!!
Good to see you back @chris_in_cal!
Still hurting from behind left knee, but I think it is getting better. I attempted a few short, easy jogging steps over the last couple of days, and it didn't hurt. But after sitting for long periods of time I am limping while walking for quite a while.
So I will start out conservatively and say 40 miles for the month.
Happy New Year EVERYBODY!! 🥂🎉8 -
Happy New Year. January is always a lower mileage month for me because of the heat and holidays. We’re heading to Fiji for a week in the 4th where it’ll be 30C and super humid so I’m not sure if I’ll be able to run in that soup - the priority will be to stay hydrated 😜🍸🍹
My goal for the month is to simply build back my fitness and clock a few longer runs.10 -
Thanks for setting this up, @AlphaHowls!2
-
My goal is to stick to my plan. Since I can't see more than 1 week in advance, I'm gonna guess 110 miles. That's roughly where I was in December. What do you hope to change?
What do you hope to keep?
What do you hope to accomplish?
What do you hope...?
Change: My diet. Parts of it. I have actually kept up the meal prep habit and my meals are fine. I find myself eating more sweets over the past year and that is a hard habit to break. So, conscious effort will be made to get back to normal.
Keep: Running. I am happy with the volume and consistency of my running. I hope that the speed will come back but I want to continue to run even if it doesn't. I enjoy the mental health benefits and the long-term health benefits as I age.
Accomplish: I'd love a new HM PR. I don't know if it is possible. Right now it doesn't feel possible but I'm working towards a solid effort anyway.
Last but not least, I hope we end this year happy and healthy and that we can help new friends that join us become as enamored with running as you all did for me back when I was a newbie!8 -
January 2025 Goals:
- 400 mins. of exercise
- 365 mins. of running/walking
- Run/Walk a total of 100K (62.1 mi)
- Run/Walk a 5K, 10K, and 1/2 M
- 2000 m of elevation gain
- 5 swimming workouts
6 -
Hi, not sure how this community stuff works. New to MFP. Does anyone see my post? Will try to start running mid January after the big freeze.
9 -
Well, cheers friends, and happy new year!
It's been I think exactly a year since I last posted so I guess I fall into that regular new year's enthusiasm and nostalgia that makes me want to check in and see if y'all are still here. And of course you are! I read a few December posts and great to see the amazing accomplishments of old friends and new faces.
2024 was another year of not getting back into running as I hoped. Last year when I popped in here I was getting ready to have surgery but in a fit of optimism I had signed up for the Clarence DeMar half marathon for September 29 (for my friends 50th state marathon celebration), thinking this would motivate and kickstart my running again. Lol. I'll spoiler the update if you want to read it, but although I did run it, my training was so inconsistent that it was really awful and I continue to struggle to get back on the running program.Short(ish) recap is that surgery and recovery went well, but motivation to run did not. Lots of stops and starts and never really building the consistency I needed. But I DID THE RACE! It nearly killed me and I cried during it, but I did it. It was an amazing weekend with gorgeous fall weather, and my friend's finish and celebration was incredible and so special. But man, that was rough.
Since then, I have also not been consistent and it came to the point where I was miserable in trying to run with my friends because I was so slow and everything was so tight and I hated it. I started seeing a PT who I met doing a Spartan DEKA indoor fitness event (10 stations, I did it with a friend. Side note, for the partner challenge they add your ages for the age group and ours was, uh hum, the 110+ age group. Which we won. As the only ones in the group). The PT was helpful and I continue with that once a month but really I know that I need to be consistently running and not this stop and start to have any chance to not feel so bad when running.
So that's where I am now, in trying to work on that. I bought a NordicTrak treadmill with the iFIT program and I joined a 6 week back to running program. The trainer and beautiful scenery on my screen (it's running through Portugal) are managing to motivate me and the automatic speed and incline changes force me to do the intervals and not slack off. It started easy enough that I didn't get immediately turned off, and now I'm feeling the old spark of a "challenge" to motivate me to get on it every day. I told my friends I'm out for now, except for walking because I want to be in a better headspace and physical space before I join them again. I also have been doing some of the other challenges on the iFIT for hiking and walking - like a base camp hike to Everest or volcano hike in Ecuador and it's really pretty cool and makes me want to travel to these places in person! As much as I resisted ever getting a treadmill until now, it's surprisingly working for me.
I don't blame you for not reading all that - I'm as long-winded as I always was. Ha.
Goals for 2025? Hopefully just getting to a place of easier running that I don't hate. I don't care about distance but I want to feel better about my fitness and being able to do things I enjoy, like hiking without feeling so out of shape or painful. It's probably going to be a rough year on several work and personal fronts I fear, so trying to keep perspective do what I can - and ENJOY what I can do.
Great to see you all. Happy new year and happy running!7 -
My goals for January:
Walk/jog 3 times per week as I break in my new orthotic inserts (which I picked up today - photo below).
Walk/run/steps total aiming for 80 miles again with 25 of those miles being the walk/run combo miles.
Notice how they’re different to accommodate the differences in my feet, especially aiding the left one with my fallen arch and collapsing ankle. (Left one is on the right in photo.)7 -
Hey great to see you @katharmonic 😄 Glad you're back!
@martaindale very well said for your 2025 goals. Those mirror what I was going to write. Except I want a new marathon PR. It is highly unlikely at 62, but I will train for it and see what happens.6 -
Hello everyone! Happy New Year!
My main goal is to get out for 3 runs a week and just enjoy them… I’ve got a ski holiday booked in the last week of January, so keeping injury-free is my priority this month!5 -
Hi Everyone and Happy New Year!
My January goals are to start building mileage for my marathon in April. I would like to PR in the marathon and think that it will be possible if I am able to up my mileage and finally start getting out for longer runs. So, that means ca. 280km for January.
And…. to actually do the weight training. I am aiming for 4 hours of active weight training.
5 -
Well 2025 is off to a good start - went for a walk in the forest with the family this morning and then followed it with a 5k run. Both were great. Family photo below. I also saw a heap of morning glory at the edge of the forest, which made me think of you lot. Sadly, although stunning, they’re officially a weed here!
My goals for the year are to build back up to and maintain a 40km per week running average (makes for a 100 mile month) and to go to Pilates at least twice a week.5 -
Glad to see you back and setting a goal @chris_in_cal !
I hope your knee continues to heal @Scott6255 .
Great goal @ContraryMaryMary ! Fitness and hydrations wise.
Welcome @stevenb6462 . Anyone in the thread can see your posts here...I guess, in theory, anyone can it. This is a great group you have found. Very supportive and chatty. What is your running history? Do you have overall running goals?
@katharmonic Glad to see you back! I'm glad the surgery went well and you did good to hang in there and finish the race. I'm glad you have found the treadmill helpful in motivating you to run. I totally understand not wanting to run with your friends right now, but I have a feeling you'll get there sooner than you think. One foot in front of the other. Repeat.
Interesting insets @daria0919 . I hope they work for you.
Not sure of my goal yet. Will try to think about them and post soon.2 -
Thanks for setting us up @alphahowls. I'll have to give your questions some thought, but I will go ahead and say that I am in for 125 miles for January.
It's so good to see you back @katharmonic!6 -

Checking in for the new year. I'm not sure yet whether I'm able to run again after my de-boobing surgery, and the weather will be stormy and wet for the coming week, but lets find out. 😅8 -

@SummerSkier would you be willing to be part of a relay team? They have a 4 person relay team option. I’ve never done a relay race. I’d be game for that since they don’t have the 10K option this year.5 -
What do you hope to change?
What do you hope to keep?
What do you hope to accomplish?
What do you hope...?
Change:
-Overeating, gluttony, eating more than I need, stop listening to the permission people, "you deserve it"
-Procrastination, excuses. Do it as it crosses your mind, don't say later, do it now
Keep:
-Maintaining my weight, since 2015
-Maintain Run streak - 1 mile daily
-MFP days streak
Accomplish:
-Injury free, just for today
-Hoptown half marathon in October 2025
-To be back up to long distances
1 5.4 miles, Crazy Laps!
Clocking in at 135.6 lbs. this morning. I want to go back to 125, but know this is fine to.8 -
Emilie Butler - I have a request on Strava, but I am not seeing any activity and I need you to let me know if you are here.
@WarmJellyfish
what the heck is a crazy lap? sounds like fun...
I forget that we have people here who do not know my weirdness. So crazy laps is what you do around your house. I do not have a treadmill. I have my basement and stairs (hills). I have run a marathon in my home. Yes, I actually circle my basement and through the house to get my miles in. It is a testimony that you do not have to wait for weather or conditions. Just get up and move and do it. Anyone can walk or run in place. No excuses.
TMIMy other crazy for the day. I evidently caught a cold. It woke me up 3AM on the 31st. Mom was sneezing and full of snot on Monday and eight hours later it had a hold of me. My throat hurts, my ears hurt, congested, sneezing. I dragged all that into my new year!9 -
2025 goals:
- 2500km for the year.
- Run a few races. Already signed up for a 25k in Feb called Frozen A** and a 50k in May,
- Fastpack a few backpacking routes. Hmm what can I do for 3 day weekends and where it's snow free.
- Loose another 5kg minimum, or more, probably more...anything past 5kg is a bonus and keep it there.
- January will be low mileage as I'm doing some travelling for 2 weeks in a blisteringly hot place.
- 150kms goal.
- Keep the arthritis and diabetes at bay
9 -
I thought I would share our team's RTY stats with everyone. We totally crushed it!
My goal for the month and for all months will be 100 miles but I sort of had an epiphany when I was running today. I have spent the last few years (in my 60's) feeling like no matter how hard I try the best I can do is just maintain my fitness and strength but today I thought. WHY NOT GET STRONGER AND FASTER. Just because I am old doesn't mean I have to settle for status quo and not backsliding. So for 2025 that is my approach!
First run of the year - chilly, breezy, dry. Perfect running weather - got in 7 miles (plan was 4 hahahah) and managed to push the pace on many of the splits under 10 min. Also managed to get my HR up higher than I have in a while.
6 -
@AlphaHowls ahhh those are fun. I once saw someone run a marathon on their apartment balcony during covid.....5
-
Welcome @stevenb6462! Jump right in! We'd love to hear a little about what brings you here and what your goals are.
@katharmonic Good to see you! I also have a treadmill with ifit and really like it. I mostly use it during the summer but the guided runs in interesting places makes it so much easier!
@SummerSkier I forgot there wasn't a 10k this year. Maybe the relay option @daria0919 mentioned? Either way it would be awesome to meet you!5 -

Ok, I was supposed to wait another week with exercising, but slow running should be fine. It's such a great feeling to run a) without bra and b) without anything moving on my chest. I'm in love! Anyway, super stormy weather, too cold temperature. Was difficult to just move and my throat feels frozen. But I had fun! Happy new year, all.9 -
Jan total 5.9/110 miles
YTD: 5.9 miles
1/1: 5.9 miles
Beautiful weather this morning! Low 40s with low humidity. Perfect conditions for a speed workout. Garmin had 3 min intervals scheduled. The workout went really well, and I was hitting the pace more easily today. Conditions? Fitness? New shoes? Maybe a little bit of everything.
Oh yeah, I got new shoes! These are Mach 6, wide. After reading reviews, I decided to try the wide fit since the regular fit I've used for the last couple of versions rubs a callus under the ball of my foot where I'm pretty sure my foot is hitting the edge of the sole. I can tell the difference in how they fit and they felt so springy! It really drove home how bad a couple pairs of my shoes are. So, I will be cleaning my closet out later today.6 -
@yirara Just a little light running a week before I was supposed to. 😂 Sounds like a runner to me! Glad you are recovering well and felt ok during your run despite what sounds like very cold temps.
@WarmJellyfish your definition of fun and mine are different. The thought of crazy laps has me going 😵💫6 -
martaindale wrote: »@yirara Just a little light running a week before I was supposed to. 😂 Sounds like a runner to me! Glad you are recovering well and felt ok during your run despite what sounds like very cold temps.
Heck yes! I didn't do much during the past 5 weeks, thus I needed that. Well, I was away between crimbo and NYE and walked some 10-14km each day in lovely and sunny 16C. But that really was all I did. Stamina did ⏬4 -
martaindale wrote: »@SummerSkier I forgot there wasn't a 10k this year. Maybe the relay option @daria0919 mentioned?
@SummerSkier let us know how being part of the relay sounds to you. I'd consider being the third.6 -

@chris_in_cal sounds like a possibility. @SummerSkier? Who else is interested in partaking in a team relay? @quilteryoyo?
My husband and I were looking at flights. Right now there are direct round trip flights Richmond VA - Houston for $300. Hubby is definitely game for a week in Texas - neither of us have ever been there and we like taking trips to places we’ve never been before.5 -
