WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR JANUARY 2025

Michele-I have similar hand warmers from Amazon. I put mine inside mittens. I don't like walking with hands in pockets-it's a good idea to be ready to disrupt the fall so I need my hands ready!
Debbie-hope plans work for MIL-it sounds sensible.
Tracy-I hate unexpected appliance/furnace repairs. When my husband and I were young and I was pregnant with first child, the week or two before Christmas clutches went out in both vehicles. We had not choice but to fix them. We always referred to that as the year we got his and her clutches for Christmas-may have been the most money we ever spent on each other at Christmas!
Lisa-glad to hear DD and kids hope safe.
Barbie-I think you are doing wonderful job walking through this difficult time. Annie running around parking lot is priceless! And you and some help figured it out. I remember (more so the first few months) I would encounter some situation around the house of trying to figure out something and would get upset DH wasn't there to help or figure out. I would have "conversations" with him and talk through the situation and came up with solutions. Remain strong my friend.
Pip-too bad about colonoscopy. Interesting the different approaches to prep. I believe last one I had was a couple of the ducolax pills a couple of days before, clear liquids/food for a couple of days, miralax day before. It has changed alot over the years. I don't find the teste of mirage to be nearly as nasty as the old formulas.
Allie-your description of Kyle's mother's behavior really does alot to explain his reactions. Him going upstairs to deal with it sounds like a step forward. My husband reacted much as his father did in our early years together. We worked together through the fact that he didn't need to keep replaying those tapes and could change. He made great progress.
Heather-when you said the large window over the sink, I pictured a window in the wall over the sink so you could look outside (that's what I have)-didn't realize it was a skylight! Very scary stuff either way.
Yard guy was able to come and clear my driveway and sidewalks after more snow Friday night and into the morning. Got about an additional 4 inches on top of earlier snow. I had him clear a spot on the curb strip (grass between sidewalk and street) so I can sit trashcan there. I don't like letting cans sit in street and snow was a bit high for me to drag large can into.
Doing my January deep clean (at least starting it today). Making list of what I need to accomplish before move looks reasonable (manageable). This primarily involves, shockingly, more purging! I also want to get vinyl plank put in basement (but need to clear out junk I have put there), paint basement walls and perhaps tile small shower downstairs to make it look and function better. Will most likely hire all of those jobs out.
We are getting ready for several days of very cold weather-I could do without that.
Take care all,
Ginny in Ohio

Heather So glad you are getting the windows taken care of! So scary! Also condolences for your son's loss. Death is hard anytime, but I think worse when it is a young person.
Kittens are healing well but still aren't suppose to be jumping. We removed their tall tree stand when we got them spayed. The problem arise when they started using my dining room chairs as scratching posts! DH brought their stand back out this morning and laid out on its side. The kittens are so confused and enthralled! They did get lots of living when they scratched on it! Yes, they have been jumping up and down furniture, but I couldn't prevent that.
I have some to-dos to get done this morning . DH heading to process our last deer off the season. I need to go to grocery but need to plan a couple of meals first. I need veggies and fruit. Some other paperwork to deal with. I will make this day productive! I want to get a few thank you notes out as well.
I meal planned when my girls were little. I haven't done it in a long time. It gets complicated with work, errands, appointments. Anything that takes more than 30 mins after work doesn't work. We do have breakfast for dinner several nights a week because it is fast and easy. The downside is no leftovers for lunch. I need to choose a couple of meals to have ingredients for so that we have some quick options. I really am bored of spaghetti, breakfast, and sloppy Joe's. This limited processed food thing sucks! I would take suggestions..
So far my GLAD is working. Grateful is easy. Achieved takes a little thought. Learned is the one I struggle with. I think of something I learned when it happens, but forget by bedtime. Will start making note. Delighted in is easy because of kittens, but do try to chose different things.
Have a great day!
Hugs to all!
Stay warm and safe!
Make the best choices you can in the moment!
Love to all!

Morning, my friends,
Heather - So many healing thoughts swirling out for your son's loss. 😔There are few bosses that are loved anymore, so that shows a lot. If I remember, he was also instrumental in keeping your son working for the company when your son quit drinking. In a company that survives on the consumption of alcohol, that alone shows what a great guy he was. I'm so sorry. And that pane of glass looks terrifying! So pleased that Velux will replace! Considering they charge £655 for a small window, including labor, it's not cheap! Is it possible to get them to proactively replace the other while they're at it?
Kylia - Love the pictures from yesterday, but especially the first one, with the starburst of light on the snow, drawing your eyes up to the silhouettes of the deer to the sunset (sunrise?) in the distance over the fields of white. Your cholesterol numbers were almost exactly the same as mine in my tests in mid-December, and my doc was quite happy with them. And normal glucose level inches up as we get older. Most sources agree that between 90 and 150 for older adults is a good result. Most doctors are also aware that someone in their 50s and 60s does NOT have the same "normal" blood test ranges as someone in their 20s and 30s! I'm not fond of doctors who try to bully me into agreeing with them, either, and it does seem you may need to change yours, if you're uncomfortable with what she's pushing on you.
Michele - Hey, an inch and a half of snow accumulation is scary in the South! I discussed it with my best friend in Montana, as well as my sister, who used to drive school buses and concrete trucks. After they stopped laughing, we were all in agreement that it's OP we worry about (other people). I know how to drive in snow, but I also know these people do NOT. I also know my reflexes have slowed down enormously, and I don't wish to be out there on slick streets in case I need reflexes I don't have anymore to avoid the OP. So I stayed home.
Pip - I've lived in pull-behind camper/trailers up to 24 feet long, and in a 5th wheel, like the one you just got, and there is no comparison in terms of how roomy they feel. 5th wheels just feel huge on the inside, especially with the slides out. Yours is really nice. Great choice. Is this the 3rd or 4th one since you retired?
Barbie - Sounds like a VERY busy day with Miss Annie. Hope the bitter apple is a deterrent - it seems like she goes through a harness every couple weeks...
Busy day ahead, if Corey has the energy - He wants to start at the grocery store, and then to Home Depot to see about the bathroom vanity - the one I'm thinking about is in the spoiler:Much will depend on what they have in stock, of course, and not that fond of a black faucet - but I want it to have one lever handle, not the old round ball-type that you twist to the left or right for hot/cold water. If not that, then I want one with separate hot and cold handles, and they have a LOT of those.
Still lots of snow in the grass and center medians, and it's sitting right at freezing temps, so will wait a while and let the sun get completely up to warm the asphalt roadways. Corey's awake and about to get his second cup of coffee, so it will be a while anyway...
Yesterday was a tough day for my stomach, not my lower gut for a change. Had just a grilled sweet potato for lunch, and a bit of it got stuck. No warning that it was coming except a bit of nausea. It took me two hours and a cupt of hot tea to finally resolve it. Between that and the barometric headache, it wasn't a terribly good afternoon. Did get quite a bit of crochet done, though, so there's that... 🐈⬛😹🥰
This turned into a novel again, so I'm off to get a couple things done. Egg's ensconced on my sewing table again, so that can wait. I WILL be evicting her tomorrow. She gets over it pretty quickly.
Later, y'all,
Love,

Kylia I support your decisions. I agree your numbers are good. My numbers the last time I had my blood work checked were beginning to show problems. My doctor did not make any recommendations. I took responsibility and made the changes to my diet and lifestyle. I am getting new numbers in April. I decided I feel so good that I did not want a physical in December too much going on and you never know about the weather here. I believe it is more important to build your immune system naturally though improving your gut function. Unfortunately many of the modern medicine practices are not so friendly to the gut. So I weigh the pros and cons according to my own health meter. So far this year I have not had to take any prescription or over the counter meds or have added vaccines. This is the best I have felt in a long time.4

I had a post and I just lost it ! I think this is the fourth one we’ve had since we retired. We had the Airstream before we retired so this is the fifth one overall.
Thanks for all the comments about the kitchen. It is nice looking isn’t it. I’ve never had an island before. I may end up moving stuff around as time goes on thankfully there’s a lot of storage space so I can switch things up..

Man oh man, I fell off and got lost. So much to catch up on. I hope everyone is staying warm. I moved away from the cold 6 years ago to find myself freezing my fanny off this last week. Gah!
I hope everyone had a wonderful New Year. I spent mine at the beach. It was a little cold, but the sunrises were stunning every day.
Everyone around me over the holidays seemed to be sick. I somehow managed to escape little more than an ”almost” sniffle for a day or two. Thank you Elderberry, zinc and vitamin c. Getting back into my breath work and training this week. Really looking forward to it.
Thank you for your patience with me while I catch up and navigate how to work the posts here. 🫶🏻

Pip ~ How do you move the new camper from one location to another? It is beautiful inside!
Allie ~ I love your longer hair-do from 2023! I bet with your new weight loss it would look great.
Barbie ~ I remember when our Pom would occasionally slip out of his collar as I walked him. His fur was so silky that all he had to do was pull to get it off. One time I had to stop several cars because he had slipped out and taken off down the street. I guess your experience with Annie had to have been scary and glad some folks helped you get her back.
Kylia ~ The photos of the deer in the snow are lovely. The cats seem to be having a blast on the overturned cat tree.
Michele ~ My son's restaurant totally closed on Friday when the winter storm was expected so I can see why BK was late opening. He did open it on Saturday!

Lisa - It was his previous beer company that took him back after the drink incident. V good of them.
He pitched the idea to his friend, who owned this company, that they should have a non-alcholic wholesale wing, because he wanted to work in accordance with his new values. His friend took him on and my son started the new department from scratch. My son has had to take on much more responsibility since his friend has been so sick. Yes, a promotion and pay rise, but he works far too hard, IMHO. How he survived that trip to New Orleans and the bourbon factories, I don't know! My DDIL says, he knows what he has to lose.
I have no idea what will happen to the company now, but his friend has had plenty of time to make arrangements. He owns it. (!!!!????)
They are friends from university. I had a great rapport with him.
I think Velux may replace the other big window above the dining table. It is the exact same age. (We also have a small one on the top floor.) I have read of them doing this for other people. We will certainly ask. It's the place where we do everything with the grandchildren.
I had a good nap this afternoon. Last night was a little disturbed.
So sorry your digestion decided to wreak havoc.
Nice vanity unit etc. Cupboards are always good.
Love you all. I have BP and bloods for my new med tomorrow.

I second it! We get a lot of Fifth-Wheels here, especially in the winter months, snowbirds and travelers. How does Kirby fair with backing that up and towing? Is it difficult to learn? Do you have a truck to pull it or have it towed? I’m thinking of upgrading mine this year as renting an apartment is starting to look like a problem here. More later on this as it progresses.

@Kylia I would get a new doctor too. My Primary doesn’t recommend vaccinations unless you feel like you need them. They also don’t prescribe meds unless absolutely necessary. They were not happy when my cardiologist put me on cholesterol meds, and when my kidney doc put me on a diuretic. These 3 disagree on a lot of stuff, so I look at my bloodwork, then lookup stuff online and compromise. Cardiologist took me off diuretic, which I’m ok with, my legs are not retaining water, just swell when I walk to much and retain fat. LOL, the reason the kidney doc put me on it is gone, but has nothing to do with the diuretic. I’ve not been walking as much as I used to which isn’t good either. Not sure what I’ll end up with there. Right now trying to adjust BP meds to get that at a good level. It goes to low if I take all of what I am prescribed, but if I stop the one they told me I could if too low, it then goes too high. Checking my BP at 1/2 a dose right now to see what happens. I’m on 3 meds and all 3 of my docs know that I’m doing this with that one med. It’s the newest one so can me adjusted. So @Kylia, do you and what you feel is right for you! Find a new doctor that you are happy with. Ask one of your other docs that you like to recommend someone. They have the right connections!

Tina - good to hear from you. Hope the high winds have stopped and your area stays safe. Will be praying for some rain for SoCal!!
Heather ((((HUGS))). Hope Velux can get that broken window taken care of ASAP. What a nightmare - no going barefoot for a while. Sorry to hear about your son's best friend and boss.
Kylia - glad to hear your DH's hunt was successful! I bet the meat is really good - the deer probably are cleaning up the cornfields (and other grains) in your area. Love the snow scene with the deer. Are they eating nuts from under the tree where they are gathered? I'd be disgusted too with your doctor. I've learned the doctor's scale adds from 3 to 5 pounds, likely from clothing. Agree it's time to find a new doc who listens and lets the patient have input on meds and vaccines without pushing and cajoling.
Barbie - hope the bitter apple works on Annie's harness. Glad you got her corralled - bet she was excited to go on her short-lived run.
Sue - sorry to hear about that truck door, what a nuisance. Hope you can find an inexpensive repair shop locally that can take care of it. Some of these repair places see a woman drive in and dollar bills fill their heads.
I sent Social Security an email last week about the $35.90 deduction error. For some reason they credited me $30.50 the day after... appreciated, but what about the rest of it? They still owe me $5.40. I get to call them tomorrow, wish me luck.
Finished the final episode of Vera. Very nice - I'll sure miss the new seasons every year. Maybe it's time to watch them starting over from season 1.
A bit foggy and chilly. Looks like the cold weather is coming next weekend - lows in lower 20F. Hoping snow doesn't tag along.
Stay warm and safe my friends!

Ginny, Thank you for your encouragement and words of wisdom.
Lisa Annie has chewed through three leashes, a gentle leader, and her harness. She has been an opportunity for spiritual growth was afraid to walk out into the field for fear another dog would run into
About 10 years ago a lively dog ran into me at the dog park and injured my knee. My knee healed quickly but for awhile I stayed close to the fence and thought I might never feel safe again but in time I was fine and returned to my usual behavior. That experience gives me hope that I'll recover from my fragile feeling today.
Pip your new RV is awesome
Heather. It sounds like agood outcome for your windows.

Pip- your picture of your Minnie Winnie reminds me of an old family friend(thought she was actually my cousin until just a few years ago).
Her name is Winnie and she drives across country several times a year in her little Winnebego. Just her and her cats.
She is a tiny thing, barely 5' but used to work on the Alaskan Pipe Line- Driving big equipment that the tires were a lot taller than she was.
She is 80yrs old and still driving from AK to FL with stops along the way. She stayed with my mom for 3 weeks last month. This time, she had her son who was also driving down from AK to AZ follow her down.
Thankfully he did because she had a bit of "car trouble" that he was able to fix for her6 -
Machka - it must feel good to have gotten a ride in.
Hope your husband’s ankle heals so he can do the next one with you.
Phone calls - I don’t know how any of this will work in our house. We no longer have a landline. Haven’t for 8 years now. DH handles his calls and I handle mine. His name is on nothing but our vehicle insurance. It’s all in my name.
My brother told me when he went to tear our grandparents house down he contacted the power company to come unhook the main lines from the house, he ran into a huge problem. The power had been disconnected for 3 years, and my grandmother had never switched it to her name after my grandfather passed 12 years previously.
They kept stating that the owner of the account needed to call, he ended up showing both death certificates for both grandparents and they still wouldn’t do it. He finally said, look the house is coming down you can have your equipment or not, but there’s not going to be anything left standing on this date. They finally showed up.
I think part of the problem with this stuff is people in businesses aren’t trained to deal with something that isn’t 100% part of their ideal scenarios they have policies for. It’s all a lack of customer service. I can understand needing proof, because of all of the scammers, but some is just ridiculous.
Kylia - I’ve been dozing off every time I sit for a few minutes lately too. I think I need a couple of good rest days.
Lisa - the family gathered along with several friends for a 50th birthday party for me. I had assumed something was going on.
I’m sure Rodger will know there is something happening as soon as I tell him we’re going out for supper today. Rodger has a sinus headache too.
I hope your new vanity is in stock. I like the one tap type too. So much easier to deal with.
That’s a good report from the lab tests!
I’m surprised a test for UTI wasn’t done first too, it seems to be the first thing we think of at work.
I don’t know why seniors get them so much.
Beth - I find sewing a frustrating business at times. I have made curtains and when the girls were little I made them some clothes and Halloween costumes. I have not done any for a long time.
Allie - Looks like Miles had a great day. I can’t wait to see your next pic. You looked great in that one.
Heather - how scary that would be. That would worry me terribly knowing there is another in the house.
Glad they are fixing it for you. Will they replace the second one too?
Sorry to read of your son’s boss.
Pip - I love the new camper.
Kylia - that’s genius putting the cat tree on its side.
I too have been struggling with meals during the week. We have been eating too much processed stuff as well.
I made tacos one night this week, they at least have veggies.
I also have started using my air fryer more often. It does seem to be a help.
Ginny - what a Christmas present! Matching clutches 😂
I don’t know how we accumulate so much stuff that it seems like a never ending process of purging.
I have been working on taking more out than in, but it still seems to be a pile.
For those of you in the southern states, my husband used to drive truck and his most common run was Newfoundland or PEI down to Florida, back into Canada through the Niagara Falls border crossing. One of his trips that he still talks about to this day is coming out of Florida and there was a snowstorm in Georgia. He ended up pulling off because in his words “he was scared of all the people playing pinball with their cars and the guard rails.” The problem isn’t only people not knowing how to drive in it, the vehicles aren’t equipped for it.
Rodger’s “surprise” party.
I told him in the morning that we were going out for supper last night. He asked me where we were going and I told him the West End. He asked me why the (insert curse word here) we were going all the way there. I just looked at him.
So he knew that something was up, but not exactly what.
Early in the afternoon he asked me what time we were leaving for the surprise dinner. 😂
We arrived at the restaurant and he truly was surprised by everyone that had shown up for him. He saw a friend he hadn’t seen in probably 20 years. The girls friends that were at our house during their growing up years and one of their Mom’s all showed up.
It was really nice. He said on the way home that he really was surprised, he was expecting it just to be the girls, their spouses and the grands.
Kaitlyn and I had wanted to do this at the Olive Garden on the south side of Edmonton, I could have gotten him there with no suspicion at all. They don’t take reservations for that number of people though.
Today I have been to Costco and will be going back in a couple of hours. There is an appointment to get the rims replaced on DH’s truck. It will take about an hour. I guess we’ll just walk around while they’re doing it. He can’t go alone because he lost his Costco Card.
Maybe I’ll come up with some ideas for meals.

Get a hold of some elderberry and a little extra vitamin c each day. Boost that immune system. I’m a stickler for handwashing and wiping things down. When I asked my school teacher friends how they stay healthy, they say they never touch their face.
Feel better soon. 🤗4 -
Tracey ~ Looks like a fun BD party for Roger.
I have the heat turned up to 74* because DH keeps saying he is freezing even though he has a tee, shirt, sweater and his coat. He is always cold! Because of the heat my nose is so stuffed up I want to scream! Need a humidifier and got rid of ours when I did my decluttering thing back in August. A real regret.

Tina – I can’t believe when I heard that there wasn’t any water in the hydrants!!! How stupid can you get?
Michele NC
It's not stupidity. It's because the hydrants are supplied by tanks that are dry to to lack of measurable rain and other fires in the same area that they just put out. They haven't had time to replenish.

That’s the beauty of this, we don’t have to pull it at all. We store it at the parks storage facility. We pay to have it stored here and when we are coming, they haul it here and put it in our spot. The only thing we bring is our car with food. We have a portable refrigerator that we bring stuff to put on the fridge. I have already put a stock of t-shirts, socks underwear that stay here. I keep a constant inventory of what we have and what we need the next time we come. Same thing withe the canned goods.

Kylia-I agree with others that your doc sounds a bit off. I hate when they only try to treat numbers and not people. Regarding vaccines:I frequently did not take flu vaccines (had a bad itching spell after one and am not allergic to eggs, so who knows). My doc would always go over recommended vaccines and take note of my preference. The only ones he really pushed was pneumonia (I think especially because I have had pneumonia several times) and shingles. I thought since I had had shingles once I didn't need it because I wouldn't get them again. I was miserable enough for with the first bout of shingles, I would do darn near anything to avoid them. I decided on RSV and the Covid vaccines on my own. I think it is your right to decide what you want. My employer had been considering making Covid vaccinations mandatory for our employees and I spoke out against a mandat even though I personally chose to get them.
Pip-your current set up is about the only way I would have a trailer. I take it you are removed from the current fire dangers?
Tina-I hope you and yours remain safe. There is so much "stuff" out there about the fires. There will be plenty to review afterwards and lessons to learn. Right now everything that can be done to save lives needs to be done and debates won't help.
Heather-sympathies to your son and to you over the loss. So young to pass.
Carol-I would pick up another humidifier-they are small and don't take up so much space, If you don't want to go out there are a bunch of of them on Amazon. Have you tried heating pad or electric blanket for you husband.
Meal prep-I do crock pot meals on weekends or a meatloaf or soup on weekend and then have dinner for the week. Fish is a quick cook for dinner. I have a humus baked chicken dish that is good. There are several good one pan dinners that are a quick cook. I get alot of recipes from https://www.skinnytaste.com and https://www.delish.com. They each have a wide range of items.
Had a productive day today. Didn't get everything accomplished, but pleased with what I did. Going to do a bit of ironing done (doubt I will do all of it) and need to pack food for lunch.
Take care all,

Well productive was the word of the day. Not necessarily everything I wanted to get done, but productive all the same. The fridge is full with veggies and fruits. I washed my truck. I got to Lowe's and paid for my DH's Christmas present. My DH and I managed to get the large curio cabinet moved out to the new garage. We got the stuffs put back into it. We discussed moving a different cabinet into the space, but the ones we have are all too big. It seems so strange to see that particular wall empty. There has always been a cabinet in that space. I moved around some glass ware into my buffet hutch that use to house cars. I did tell DH that one of these days we (yes WE) would need to clean out the base of both the roll top bar and the buffet. I also said it wasn't going to be today! I figure we worked well for a long time together, no reason to jinx it! I would like a few more clean spaces. He did clean out and organize another cabinet shelf himself today. I am proud of him. He threw some things out and has some other things to give to someone else.
Dinner was sweet potato, rotisserie chicken, and steamed broccoli. It was yummy and so pretty on the plate.
Pip Beautiful trailer!
Rita I hope you get to feeling better soon! Lots of fluids and elderberry!
Tracey I am glad Roger was surprised! It is impossible to surprise some people.
Thank ALL of you for your support! It means the world to me.
Lots of love,

Tina – I can’t believe when I heard that there wasn’t any water in the hydrants!!! How stupid can you get?
Michele NC
It's not stupidity. It's because the hydrants are supplied by tanks that are dry to to lack of measurable rain and other fires in the same area that they just put out. They haven't had time to replenish.

Yes. The water has to come from somewhere and when there is no water to be had ...... some years it is a problem in Australia too. Unfortunately. My husband has been through 2 bushfires and lost just about everything in the second one.
Bushfire susceptibility is a big factor in where we choose to live.

Pip - Your new camper is fabulous! Can you tell us what it is about the site that you love. What are the surroundings like?
Blood test and BP today. I always get nervous about the BP. I hope it's OK as I don't want to have to increase the med. I'm on a low dose at the moment, but she was talking about putting it up. At least I've stopped that awful cough with the Ramipril. They will be testing for potassium today. I feel OK, but a bit bloated. A UTI always seems to be waiting in the wings, but it's OK at the moment. I drink lots of fluids.
I will say all this, but it's a nurse, not a doctor, and I have the proper chat by phone on the 21st.
