MyFitnessPal Community Update to Rich Editor Format (3/4/2025)

As of 3/4/2025, the MyFitnessPal community forums will incorporate Rich Editor for formatting discussions and comments, replacing BBCode. This change will bring us up to date with current features, support future updates, and provide a modern, user-friendly forum experience.

Why is this change necessary?
Rich Editor has been a supported feature of our forum platform since at least 2021, and when we launched our first redesign of the forums in November of that year, we launched with that feature enabled. Due to an abundance of support of BBCode, at that time we opted to reverse this update temporarily. In the 4 years since, our forum provider has iterated and updated this feature, providing a number of functionalities that will deliver tangible benefits to our community that we would like to make use of.

What features are new?
The following new features will be added via Rich Editor:
  • Text headers (replaces super/subscript)
  • “Insert media” - the ability to embed YouTube/Vimeo videos directly
  • Images in-list (images will not break list formatting)
  • Image management options (sizing, etc.)
  • Table support (if pasted from another source)
  • Smart embedding (just post the link, and it will embed!)
What features will continue to be available in Rich Editor?
Nearly all of the features you currently use- some may have minor appearance or behavioral changes.
  • Text formatting via Bold, italics, etc
  • Links & hyperlinks
  • Direct images & attachments
  • Quotes, code blocks, & spoiler (Quotes are getting a slight update))
  • Bulleted & numbered lists
  • @ Mentions

What features are no longer available?
The following features will be lost during the transition:
  • Ability to change font color
  • Underline
  • Existing legacy emojis will be replaced with standard emojis
  • Super/sub-script & font size changing (replaced by Text headers)
  • Text alignment

Will this update impact the format of older posts?
We have no reason to believe this will impact older posts. If you have any issues with this transition, please report them to Staff via the Flagging feature or private message.

Can I opt to continue using BBCode in the forums instead of Rich Editor?
No; while we recognize change can be frustrating, we believe Rich Editor provides a simple, elegant experience that will be easy to adjust to and be in parity with other modern social media platforms.

For questions regarding this update, please reach out to a Staff Member directly or post in This Discussion.

Personally, I think MFP should fix the things that aren't working before implementing something new. Here are some issues that fixing them would be more helpful to me.
    • Your food list is no order whatsoever and it's just a jumble of different nutrient amounts for the exact same foods. And, if I do choose to use someone else's food entry, I often get kicked out of MFP altogether so I have found that creating my own foods and not adding them to the jumble of everyone else's foods is the most expedient way for me to track my food.
    • An updated member messaging service would also be great. Right now, it shows as one big block of words. It would be nice to be able to actually have paragraphs. It would also be nice if we could have the ability to add a link to the message.
    • It would be great to actually be able to sort our emails. I've been a member since 2015 and have a lot of messages that I often have to go through to find the one I want. If the messages were able to be filtered would be a big help.
    • Currently, when I copy and paste information into a post, large spaces open up between the lines and paragraphs that weren't showing until after I post.

But, for me, the most important one is the Nutrition Tracker. And, I really hate that we won't be able to use colour in our posts anymore.

@BKWERM88 ~ Thank you for your comments. I feel the same about many things on MFP.

If you are checking, those that lead MFP, please take a look at some of these suggestions.

[*] Your food list is no order whatsoever and it's just a jumble of different nutrient amounts for the exact same foods. And, if I do choose to use someone else's food entry, I often get kicked out of MFP altogether so I have found that creating my own foods and not adding them to the jumble of everyone else's foods is the most expedient way for me to track my food.
For me, I've noted that when I add foods from the App, I can sort by the foods that have a 'green check'. While this feature is WONDERFUL to use while 'on the go', I still like to see a full picture of what I've consumed during the day and then make any/all edits that I need to ... I don't have that option in the computer version. I respectfully agree - it is most difficult to 'find foods' that actually match labels. This, I'm sure would be a HUGE undertaking, but would go so far in helping us to better utilize labels. Perhaps you can allow some kind of 'screenshot' of nutritional values from a company website that you can store/use.

[*] Your MAIL SYSTEM is AWFUL at best. It is difficult to connect with members that you are not friends with, however, it is equally as difficult to become friends with a member that you are communicating with and would like to have on your friends list. I can't tell you how many 'trolls' request to be friends with me and I have to jump through all kinds of hoops to see if the person and I have any friends in common and/or if it is a 'new member' just looking for 'new friends'. There has also been a determination made by you to limit asking for personal email addresses from members that you work with all the time. I help to run a Seasonal Challenge and because of YOUR email system, it is easier for me to communicate through personal email. PLEASE LOOK AT THIS!! Being able to format your emails **and** sort them would be a huge help for members that actually have a need to reach out to our team mates.

[*] I'm hoping that the above comment about spacing here will be addressed in with the new formatting, I'm hopeful.

[*] I LOVE using colors. Please reconsider this ~ it helps to highlight various items in our posts and/or just gives the poster some personality. PLEASE consider adding a feature that will allow this. I surely can go to Canva and create a 'signature' but would love to be able to continue using what I currently do (see below). AND - while I'm discussing signatures ~ why don't you consider allowing something that allows a signature with each & every post??

In regards to the feedback above; while it is valid and appreciated, please be aware that the Community team (so the MFP staff members you see here) don't do dev work on the actual MFP platform. We work on the forums, which is completely independent of the dev work that happens on the MyFitnessPal program.

For that reason, please keep feedback specific and relevant to the forums in this post. Thanks!

Also wanted to provide the clarification that we aren't choosing to remove colors, they just aren't available as part of the Rich Editor.

Signatures have been a discussion for a long time- it's an option that's certainly on the table, though again, is independent of the changes being discussed here.

I think that this will generally be a positive change. I admit, if the switch to standard emojis means that we'll lose some currently-available options that I don't think have standard emoji equivalents, like "flower for you" ( :flowerforyou: ) and "drinker" ( :drinker: ), that will make me a little sad, and remove some liveliness from older posts (including, I suspect, some in the "Most Helpful" sections). I'm sure I'll live, though. :D

I recognize, too, that MFP itself and the Community are separate but linked software systems, with the MFP part supported at the code level by MFP-ers, and the Community supported in that way by Vanilla Forums (a separate company), with MFP staff presumably involved to some extent in the code that links the sites together. That does make the situation more complicated.

@durden I agree with the comments above. However, if this change fixes the formatting problem in the MFP email, it will be a positive change that will make the rest easier to accept.

I surely was not trying to cause trouble - just trying to point out some things that have been a concern for some time. The banner above (copied here) clearly states (have a suggestion...):

Based on that, I formulated my answer and meant no disrespect by expanding my suggestions (although I don't think that I was that far 'off topic'. I welcome an off-line discussion with someone from the MFP Staff, if anyone would like to chat.

Colors for the win. If the new editor can't do colors, then I don't understand why we're changing to an inferior editor. BBC Code has worked fine for ages, why switch now to something that doesn't at a MINIMUM include what we can do in BBC code and then adds new things. Seems like yet another backwards step on this platform. 😣😒😭

This change seems as ignorant as getting rid of the Feed on the main MFP site. Claims that not having color won't adversely affect our use of the forums grossly underestimates how useful color is for our posts. Just like getting rid of the Feed in MFP has adversely affected us from staying in touch with our friends and encouraging them daily.

@b3achy Well said and 1000% agreement!
