@SunnyDays930 I remember when you bought the green velvet pants!
I do not track my food, and when I did, I was very militant about it. I know that's so important.
I have a big European vacation soon so I will not worry about food. But that alcohol is a demon- the calories just add up. I like how you said you go back to healthy eating after a weekend/parties. That is true.
@frankwbrown I love seeing your posts. And I applaud you for how far you've come over the years regarding weight loss. Since May 8, you're doing very well!

@RubyRed427 I thought about a Fit Bit before. But I believe it is like a watch worn on your wrist. I really don't like wearing watches. My hands are constantly in water. It may seem weird, but except my wedding ring, I don't wear any type of jewelry at all (my husband is probably happy about that π). I also have never worn makeup, had a manicure or a pedicure. I'm just kind of a shorts and T-shirt type of gal. That's how I grew up. And I guessβ¦somethings never change.
I pay for premium because I do track my macros. I also like to track my fiber and potassium intake. I'm really not sure what the free version of MFP includes. I have no idea if it tracks your weight and measurements. But, I don't mind paying $20 a month. I spend that much (or more) in two days on alcohol βΉοΈ
You're going to laughβ¦but I have a pedometer that I just put in my pocket. It's very low-tech. But, it seems fairly accurate. Even if it's not 100% accurate, I can still tell if I'm improving or not from day to day with my steps. I haven't been using it lately. As soon as I get a AF day, I will put it back in my pocket.
Feel free to tell me more about the Fit Bit if you feel that there's something that I don't understand about it. I'm still kind of old school.

I'm going to follow SunnyDays advice. That's basically how I maintained as a young woman. When I was young I was always on a dietβ¦β¦..I always wanted to lose ten pounds no matter what. (Does anyone remember Twiggy?) So in reality what that meant was tracking low calorie for 4 to 6 days. Followed by a blow out day or two. I never lost that ten pounds but I maintained fairly well. The key was daily weigh ins. I'm pretty good at that. LOL
Some people recommend tracking your maintenance calories until you find that magic number. There's no way I could succeed at that.
Congrats on your Christmas velvet green pants, Sunny. There's nothing like fitting into clothes to motivate you. Just six months of being consistent would make a difference. You'll look great at the holidays. Patience. Not perfection.
Thanks, all. So glad to hear from everybody. It helps me stay focused.

I feel like if I kept up with the things I did today consistently I would end up where I want to be.
It's not easy - change is slow and that's what stops me every time. I recognize that and am ready for it.
I will weigh in again on Monday when I get home.

Patience, not perfection. Excellent way to think about it. I have a terrible time logging my food. I feel like I just nibble here and there since I am on semaglutide. I never have a full meal. It really does keep me from being hungry. However this time ( I was on it in 2023) it is NOT discouraging me from having wine like it did before. Otherwise the weight would be flying off. I was really hoping that would be the case. I have a few stressful things going on (who doesn't) and I guess I believe it helps me cope. In reality, alcohol just gives you more anxiety. It can become a vicious cycle. Anyway I am going to see my gf at the beach this weekend and she does not drink at all so it will be easier if there is not any in the house or anyone tempting me.

I am officially pre diabetic with an A1C of 6.0%. A little over the threshold but still, nothing I wanted to learn. My mom was Type 2 for years so I figured it would happen to me eventually. Iβm 62. I am more focused than ever to lose these last few pounds and reach goal weight by the end of this challenge. I also reduced sugar grams in MFP. I get rechecked in 6 months.
Scale is moving so slow but at least itβs moving so Iβm pleased with my progress.

This morning I had a treat and didn't feel guilty. This is a mind adjustment. I want to eat healthy and moderately. I'm quite good at scolding myselfβ¦..it's almost like a habit.
Yay!!!!! We're still here. Thank you RubyRed.
P.S. lclark. Don't give up. My husband started at 6.2 A1C Three years later he got up to 12 AIC. Now he's on insulin. I think at the beginning he felt like Metformin would let him eat whatever he wants. He's 75 and not overweight. Take one day at a time. I'm sure it'll make a difference.

Great conversations on this thread!! So inspiring and helpful!
It's the end of the school year and I am exhausted. We've had an outdoor field trip and field day. But I am happy to get all the steps. Yesterday, my fitbit measured 17,500 steps. I think that's over 8 miles of moving. The fitbit is a basic one. I like to chart my steps, get my sleep score and see sleeping heart rate (which skyrockets when I have alcohol). For a few months, I was charting my alcohol intake and then the next day's sleeping heart rate. So scary! After 2 drinks ( glasses of wine) my sleeping heart rate was usually 8 beats higher per minute at night. My poor littleπ.
Fitbit Premium shows you your sleep profile, stress management score, sleep score, and provides guided workouts, meditation and audio, recipes⦠I imagine it is competitive and similar to MFP. It even monitors and will alert you to "irregular heart rhythm" ( it doesn't diagnose but it can let you know when ther are signs of Afib. ) The only thing I don't like is wearing it all the time. I sometimes take it off at night; I don't like watches either.
6 -
@RubyRed427 It would be hard for me to wear a watch all day. My husband wears his 24/7. He wears it to bed and even in the shower (diver's watch).
The only thing I would really be interested in would be tracking my steps. Although, the sleeping heart rate feature is pretty interesting. In fact, it's a bit scary. I notice that when I wake up in the middle of the night that my heart is beating faster (almost racing). I guess the solution to that problem is not to drink π€ It's amazing how alcohol affects so many functions in our bodies.
I didn't weigh-in today since I'm still drinking. I going to buy some whiskey for today and some for tomorrow because our liquor store doesn't open until 11 am on Sundays and it just scares me to be without. I do plan on being AF on Monday because I have an appointment with my retinol specialist on Tuesday. I don't really get hangovers from whiskey (beer, wine, and liqueursβ¦yes). But I get what a lot of you call hangxiety. I think if I can go without on Monday that I can keep going.
I will weigh-in tomorrow since it's the first. I started out this month on 5/14, so there's a possibility that I may have lost a pound or so (or maybe not). Not very good. But I hope to do better in June. If I can be AF in June, I feel that I should be able to lose 10 lbs. Of course, I will have to be mindful of my food choices. I don't always log my food. I do at first, but I eat a lot of the same meals, so after a while I know what fits in my daily food tally.

@LittleSurferGirl7 re your comments on fitbit and your hands constantly in water - a fitbit is waterproof. Most activity trackers/fitness watches are, because they expect you to wear it when swiming, sweating, showering, etc. I have been wearing a fitbit for about 5 years and while they are buggy at times in reporting activity to MFP, I've never had an issue with water. I don't swim, but I sometimes shower with it on.
I'm not fond of wearing a watch and I hate having to recharge all the time and its various issues. OTOH, I find it invaluable to keep me on track. Because it tells me how many calories I've burned and how many steps I walk, and it (usually) updates calories burned to MFP. With me tracking calories going in, I have a good gauge to keep me in a calorie deficit. And I've lost (since I started wearing fitbit) 70 pounds. So that's a major plus in the minor annoyances it has.
I am not going to advocate for fitbit because it does have issues. OTOH, I bought a more expensive Polar watch when fitbit stopped posting exercise calories to MFP. After about a month, fitbit fixed the bug, and I went back to wearing it rather than the polar. All trackers have their various issues, and Fitbit was, in some respects, better than the Polar watch. At least for me. Also the fitbit is pretty inexpensive. My first one is still working, though after 4 years the band connector crumbled. I glued the connection with superglue, but replaced it. The device itself still works. Not bad for 99$. The Fitbit Charge6 I replaced it with was only about 60 on sale. And the first one came with a year's Premium subscription. The Charge6 came with a six month premium subscription. The free premium subscription just ran out but I didn't renew it. The extra features that come with PRemium aren't things I use. (guided workouts, sleep score, etc).
Some people like Garmin trackers. I tried one, but after half a day of mowing grass, it didn't record any steps, because my arm wasn't swinging so I returned it. I get a lot of exercise mowing, so that was a deal breaker. The fitbit did not have that issue.

@patriciafoley1 That is interesting that they are waterproof. I still don't like wearing a watch. I had to wear one (just a cheap Casio) when I was a meter reader in SoCal. When I started, we where still using paper documents that were fed into a computer. Later, we got handheld computers which showed the time. But when I did have to wear the watch, you should have seen me. I was in the sun all day. I was living at my Mom's house and my brother came in one morning to wake me up. He said, "You need to start taking your watch off!" My arms and legs (we wore shorts) were very deep brown. But I had a white stripe around my left wrist (which would blind you).
It's great that the Fitbit did help you lose weight. But I'm really getting tired of technology. For me, it would probably be a nightmare trying to link it to MFP. I think I'll just stick to being really active (once I quit drinking that is). Drinking has not only added extra empty calories but I also don't eat like I usually do and I'm not able to do a lot of the physical things that I normally do.
I had read that before that the watch type step trackers wouldn't count your steps if you were carrying a box or laundry basket and like you mentioned mowing the lawn because your arms aren't' swinging.
Thank you for the info though! Have a nice day!

From one extreme to the other it seems π΅βπ«
Drank too much at my sisterβs last night and then of course ate too much. And the cycle starts again.
I feel like crap today- really tired. I see a pattern- why canβt I just stop? I know why- because itβs hard and uncomfortable and easier to just do what my brain is used to. Changing these pathways in my brain is way harder than any workout.

Hi everyone
I've been doing a lot of debauchery myself! The scale said over 165 this morning. I'm going to clear this bookmark and try to focus on only up to three challenges at a time.

It always sounds like a good idea until it isn't. I do that too! I feel like I deserve some fun, but feeling horrible the next day is terrible. I take a milk thistle each day which seems to help the liver process, at least that's what a pharmacist told me. Not sure if it works but I think it does help. I also sometimes take a charcoal tablet. Of course, I wish I didn't overdo it. But we are human.

Anyways, keep up the good work!

I woke up a couple of times last night, but managed to stay in bed until 7:15 am. I had a pint (375 ml) of whiskey saved in the cupboard. But I really didn't need it. I thought about dumping it down the drain. But I decided not to do that. It's a bit hard to throw out a whole pint. I actually drank several cups of coffee when I first woke up instead of mixing a drink (I haven't done that in months). Hey, it's progress! I'm sure I can be AF tomorrow. And then the fun begins π

@LittleSurferGirl7 A trend weight basically will show you a bigger picture of how your weight has been going in general and what it anticipates will happen next based on your recent history. I use the website trendweight.com and input my weight in there daily. It will also link to other places if you want it to. Overall I like that it doesn't just look at a bad day singularly, but overall how you've been doing all week which really is the real picture.

Thanks @deepwoodslady I didn't realize there was a website. There's so much to learn. Even all the acronyms. I've never used social media much. So, some of the acronyms, I've actually Googled to see what they mean π€
5 -
there is another website for tracking weight called weightgrapher. or one for the phone called Happy Scale. There is lots to chose from, all depending on what interests you.
Littlesurfergirl, going alcohol free can be very liberating. It is a moment by moment decision. I understand the FORO, fear of running out. Have you tried to 'save" the alcohol for later? such as I can wait for later to drink. What i mean is when u get up tell yourself, wait for later, I don't need it right now, or say I can have that after supper, reavaluate then and ask yourself do I need/crave it right now, no but I can have it later! I know it sounds like a game but in truth, it buys u some sober time.
I'm just tossing some ideas out for you.
Do you want a vacation? travel to Hawaii? go to disney world? the money you save from not drink could fund your vacation.7 -
@walkintofit I just weigh myself and enter it on MFP. I looked up one of the weight tracking sites and it said that you have to have a Wi-Fi scale. I have a very accurate scale that I have owned for a few years now. I'm the type of person that keeps things until they no longer work or do what I want them to do. I just recently replaced my 44-year old microwave that my Mom gave me as a present in 1981. And, I still own the first brand new 4WD truck that I bought newβ¦it is 43 years old and still runs great. A financial guy (Clark Howard) that I used to listen to while I was driving for work always said, to get the best value is to "drive them until the wheels fall off!" I guess I took his advice seriously π€
The last three days, I have drank coffee in the morning before I had a drink. Two of those days were by choice (I had alcohol in the house). Sunday night, I poured the whiskey out. I had a horrible night and woke up at 5:30 am. I had to wait until 9 am to get more when the liquor store opened. I have whiskey in the house right now. But I had a couple of cups of coffee and am now drinking water. I know I will mix a drink soon though. I don't need it. It's more of a routine. I'm down to only a pint a day (which may seem like a lot to most). But, I was drinking a fifth a day (twice the amount). Since I'm starting to feel OK in the morning, I'll probably be able to quit soon. I bought a fifth yesterday afternoon and poured it into two pint bottles. So I have a pint for today and a pint for tomorrow. My birthday is on Saturday. So, we'll see. I hope to be AF soon.
I haven't been on a vacation since the 1980's. I had a friend whose brother was the editor for a popular magazine and he owned a awesome beach house on Lido Isle in Newport Beach, CA and a condo in Palm Springs. So, my friends and I would have access to both homes when they were on vacation. I lived in So Cal. So, we had nice beaches (sand, surf, nice restaurants, surf shops), Palm Springs, mountain resorts, snow skiing, and the Mojave desert all less than two hours away. So, our thing was mainly day trips. Although, we used to go camping at the Colorado (major party times) and Kern rivers when we were in our 20's.
Sorry this is so long!

Re: Comment "I know I will mix a drink soon though. I don't need it. It's more of a routine."
I wonder if you could just fill the two pints with something of the same color such as straight ice tea etc.?
When the urge to go and pour a drink out of habit hits, it would then be there for the hand-to-mouth and habit of pouring, but would be AF ?
When I quit smoking cigs I actually made fake cigarettes. I used straws (red ones) and kept the cigarette feeling paper on them. (Burger King uses red straws). I would cut the tip of paper off to see the red so it looked lit. I put bean bad ashtrays in my car, where I normally sat to talk on the phone and near my kitchen table for after I eat and kept waiting "cigs" in them. I also carried some in my purse in a pack. Each place they were cut off to the length of my normal cigs. I actually did not even need to suck on them. I just needed to feel it between my fingers, bring it near my mouth occasionally, see it on my steering wheel in my fingers as I drove, out of the corner of my eye between my fingers as I talked on the phone etc. I also used sugar free starlight mints to signal an end sometimes to the cigarette (like toothpaste after a meal when you brush). It was all trickery but it worked. I have been smoke free since 2007 (18 YEARS!) I smoked 3 packs a day and I had smoked for 35 years.
Just an idea because this girl understands the addiction of HABITUAL practices such as lighting that cig or pouring that glass.
The new "habit" of pouring your tea etc. can turn into something really healthy later, like a nice warm cup of green tea a couple of times a day. THAT would help you lose weight and has a bunch of health benefits.
I hope this helps. I'm with you, my friend, on how difficult this can be. You got this!

06/01 β 192.8 β (Trend Weight β 193.9) Pizza with DD, DGS and DS last night. Muffin top today. Carb bloat. Will try to keep things clean and at a minimal today. They leave at 7:00 pm but are with me every week from Thursday until Sunday evening due to her job (and my babysitting). Ughβ¦.. She is my 100 lb soaking wet size triple zero daughter that is a HUGE foodie. Constantly eating little bites of everything ALL THE TIME. My meals were about as perfect and healthy as you can get but my snacks were WAY out of line. I did have some calories and carbs left over to help mitigate but I MUST have gone over with what I ate late last night. And it was all leftover JUNK from my daughters weekly stay. It will probably catch up to me but I plan on staying active and drinking plenty of water today to help. I really want to make the goal I set for June. It puts me in the new decade of the 180βs.

@deepwoodslady Thanks for the suggestion. But, putting iced tea in the pint bottles wouldn't work because in the morning I use iced tea as my mixer with lemon wedges. I mix my drinks pretty light. I use a 16 oz tumbler, add ice, and for my first drink I add a full jigger. But, afterwards, when I freshen it up, I just add a half of a jigger. I waited until 10:30 this morning to mix a drink. Right now, the drink seems too weak (I can barely taste the whiskey). I guess the iced tea is too strong π But, that's not a bad idea. I really feel I've got this. The only problem is my birthday being on Saturday. I haven't not had a drink on my birthday in forever. But I really don't feel the need right now. I will keep you all posted.
I also quit smoking in 2007. I too smoked 2 to 3 packs a day. My husband and I both quit at the same time. I got a prescription for Chantix from my doctor, but I could afford to fill it. My husband got the full 12-week course from the VA. So, we decided to share his. We figured if it really worked, we could use the money we were saving to have my script filled. I only took it for 2 1/2 weeks and stopped taking it. My husband didn't finish the rest of it either (at the end, he just forgot to take it). Neither of us has wanted a cigarette since. It would be nice if they had something like Chantix for alcohol. I imagine someday they will.
I have trouble remembering everyone's status with alcohol. I'm also involved with the "Less Alcohol" group. There's a couple in that group that have long AF streaks (basically no longer drink). I don't think you've ever mentioned (at least since I've joined this challenge). Do you drink at all? Did you ever drink? If you have quit, how long has it been? Also, @walkintofit said that going alcohol free can be very liberating.
If you both don't mind sharing it would be helpful to know what your drinking statuses are now. And, if you ever drank, when you quit, etc.
And, @deepwoodslady thanks for the list of acronyms!
Well, I've got a drip irrigation project that I'm going to try to get done todayβ¦at least the major part.
I'll check back later!

Your welcome on the acronyms.
I suppose you would not have to use iced tea. If you could think of anything else that would work it just may help. Soda, Iced or cold brew coffee etc. Just something to give you something to grab at your standard time to feed your habit but not an addiction. Even water with a little vanilla in it so it would slightly color the water. Or Ginger Ale perhaps. Just an ideaβ¦.
I have never been much of a drinker. It's not that I don't like it. In fact, there is very little alcohol that I don't like. Beer, mixed drinks, wine. All of it is good. However, my dad was an alcoholic and died at 59. My brother was very severe and died at 54. My brother was a heavy beer drinker but after he died we found hundreds of those tiny bottles (like shots) empty under his bed so he was drinking the hard stuff too though he always denied it. This has helped me keep a lid on my drinking. I know I am an addictive personality because of the years of heavy smoking that I was so VERY DEPENDANT on. Also, my addiction to food, especially sugar. So I need alcohol which is pretty addictive like I need a hole in the head. I probably drink about 3 times per year and it's usually about 2 glasses of wine or 1 wine and 1 mixed drink of some sort. As long as I don't do it more than that, I have no problem saying no.
I also used Chantix to quit smoking cigs. Luckily my insurance covered it. It was a horrible drug. All the promises of horrid nightmares absolutely came true. It was almost unbearable. But I just kept telling myself that it's not a lifelong drug like my thyroid medicine. Also, when I woke up I could see that the dreams weren't real so I managed to get through it, but it was hard. But quitting the smoking was not hard. Not with the Chantix. Without it I know it would have been impossible because of all the other times I had tried to quit over the years. Chantix REALLY helped with the cravings but not with the habit. The hand to mouth habit or the social aspect of it. That is where my fake cigarettes came in. 18 years later and I still feel so freed!
Anyway, I wish you the very best on your road to self-improvement. I hope everything that you wish for yourself and your life will be something you can attain and achieve.
