i think people know what they mean personally when they say the want to tone up..whether it's losing fat or making you muscles stronger, the overall look you end up with is a leaner, toner body..so if they choose to say toned, i don't see what the big deal is. but to each his own..

    Ditto this ^^

I would agree if it weren't for the fact that 'A rant' in the title pretty much alludes to the fact that it's a pet peeve.

I don't mind the usage as far as people saying "they want to tone up", but I do think a HUGE dis-service is done to people when it's preached that low weight/hi rep will "tone you up" without making you bulky. IMO that route is pretty much a waste of time.

    From Webster's dictionary;

    Tone:
a : the state of a living body or of any of its organs or parts in which the functions are healthy and performed with due vigor
b : normal tension or responsiveness to stimuli; specifically : muscular tonus

Sounds like people can tone their muscles to me!
Lol, so then use "muscular tonus". Yeah, that sounds much better.

I find the word "toning" annoying simply because it is often used to imply that muscles on a woman are ugly, unattractive or masculine...

Talk about taking things out of context. ROFL.

Just because I'm a b-word like this. KEEP READING THE DEFINITIONS.
    28.
    tone up,

    b.
to gain or cause to gain in tone or strength: toning up little-used muscles.

It does have to do with muscles also. Here's a little lesson. It's a VERB. You can become "toned up" if you can tone up and be in the process of toning up.

    Just sayin'.
Thanks for expanding. People use it as an adjective when it comes to fitness.

AND, How can you get stronger without building muscle??

You're conditioning your muscles to get used to heavier and heavier weights. There will come a point though when you will need more mass / muscle to lift even heavier weights, it's not limitless (hence why there is weight catagories for weight lifting / powerlifting competitions.
Not sure how it works exactly, I just know you can get stronger while on a deficit. I was on one from June '10 til April this year and still managed to get significantly stronger, even if it wasn't as quickly as I'm progressing now I'm eating at a surplus.

The one word that irritates me in fitness is when people state they are "toning", want to be "toned", looks "tone", etc. There is NO such thing as "toning".

I see people post this a lot, mostly hard core lifters and I must say it baffles me because surely you know what someone means when they say it. Don't you? I mean when someone says they want to be toned I know what they mean. They want more muscle definition. Why is someone using a technically incorrect, but common usage term, so irritating?
Your muscle is either growing and/or getting stronger or getting smaller and weaker. That's it. Body fat that covers your muscles hides DETAIL and DEFINITION. The less body fat you have, the more detail and definition you have. So when someone says they want to be "toned" and not "bulky" or "muscly" they are in others words really implying that they don't want their body fat to be too low. That's it.

Are you saying that muscles can never remain at their current state. They must always be changing by getting smaller or larger? I'm sorry but I just don't think that is true. And it would definitely be in direct contrast to the "women don't get bulky" argument becasuse it suggests that if a woman keeps lifting their muscles will continually grow and grow and grow.

I use the word toned all the time and I've been chastised on here for doing so, but I when I use it I do mean that I don't want my body fat to drop too low, but I want some muscles beneath it. I like my curves but I understand that I need muscle and fat to keep them.

Ok, I'm so confused with all the stuff I've read on here....See if you can follow me and help me understand.

♦ You cannot gain muscle eating at a deficit.
♦ You can only gain muscle very slowly, (not overnight or even weeks)
♦ There is no such thing as "toning" your muscles---only make them grow or shrink.

Given these facts, explain how someone (i.e. me) hasn't lost 1 pound in the last 3 weeks, but has lost several inches. I'm not even strength training and I'm definitely eating at a deficit.
You can lose body fat without training, but when losing weight you lose fat AND muscle, which can explain the inches. Retaining water and fluid (not uncommon in weight loss) can easily explain why you haven't lost weight.

AND, How can you get stronger without building muscle??
Conditioning of the muscle. Olympic lifters compete in weight classes. So their goal is to get stronger without gaining weight. They strength train to lift heavier poundages and keep the same weight.

Obviously I do. Not that it's any concern of yours. It's kinda like when a pilates instructor says you build long lean muscle, when in truth you can't change the length of your muscle at all. But of course no one in pilates wants to hear that. Carry on.

I'm working on "toning", I want to be "toned", hoping to "tone", and really like it when other people look 'toned'
tone, tone, tone, tone, tone, tone.....

This thread reminds me of watching a movie with my husband and the actor/actress says "looks like he used a silencer" and my husband freaks out and screams at the TV "It's a supressor!!!" Ya whatever. No one cares.... he used a supressor, COMMONLY KNOWN as a silencer. POINT? Looking for defined muscles, stronger muscles, grown muscles.... commonly known as TONED MUSCLES. Jesus what a pointless thread. I'm bored or I wouldn't have wasted my time with a response.

    +1

    And another +1

look up the definition of tone... here I'll help you out

    tone/tōn/
    Noun:
The overall quality of a musical or vocal sound: "the piano tone is lacking in warmth".

    Verb:
Give greater strength or firmness to (the body or a part of it): "exercise tones up the muscles".

I love to get TONNED up!!!! dude its not a misconception it just a way of describing what we want.. some want to be ripped others toned others lean and some buff... don't get so bent over it LOL

THIS!!!!!!! It implies that their isn't enough "softness" to their physiques! You want to be "toned" then in truth you want to have more body fat. That's the truth.

When I power lifted, I also had to meet a weight class. If that class is under your normal weight, we'd had to cut down to get in that weight class. At least with powerlifting the lifts are low rep and and do end up putting on muscle mass. You either cut down more and more or move up a weight class. Eventually, you get too weak to cut down to a specific weight class and you move up

Bring 'em on! I'll dispell it like I would when people say that eating fast food makes you fat. Or that you have to eat "healthy" to lose weight. Just because what mainstream America thinks is correct doesn't mean it is.

I cringe when a woman WON'T pick up weights and lift heavy, claiming they don't what to get "bulky"....

Number 1...muscle don't make you bulky, fat does...
Number 2....ask the nearest man how hard it is to gain 5 lb of muscle.

AND even if you gained 5 lbs of muscle, compare that to 5 lb of fat...which one is bulkier??

IMHO only here. Oylmpic lifts are highly technical moves. I've never done alot of these lifts but it's not all about getting stronger. It's alot about learning the right technique to do the lift properly and efficently. I'm not sure if Olympic lifting is the best example. Even powerlifting has it's technical aspects that atribute to higher lifts.

Bach, there was a couple in the gym this morning and I just wanted to shake them and yell "what the hell do you think you're doing?!?!" I mean, who wants to wake up to get to the gym at line 6 or 615 in the morning just to have it be a complete waste of time, what's the purpose of that other than loss of completely useful sleep just to go through some completely usless motions. Seriously, deadlifting the lightest bar on the weight rack and sprinting through it? If you aren't breathing heavy, and it's not effort, you need more weight!

I don't find it pointless at all. There are a lot of misconceptions floating around, leading people in the wrong directions. But I guess people don't want to hear they can't "build long lean muscle" like a dancer. You are either born with it or not. Simple as that.

They are technical, but particularly at the olympic level having the right form has to a large degree been 'worked out' by everyone. There's different philosophies on how best to do things and such, but they also focus to a very high degree on increasing muscle strength without building mass and being put into a higher weight class.

I may not be able to build long lean dancer muscles but give me some weights and let me at least melt some fat and build what muscle I can/do have.
