I guess i am missing something Your working out WAY to hard to loose 1 lb. in a week. I have lost 45lbs of fat and gained 20lbs of pure muscle since july and i dont work out nearly what your proposing. It took me two years and loosing no weight or fat to figure out that hiking 20 miles and biking 35 miles a week in addition to working out twice a day just wasnt doing it for me i actually gained weight because i was not eating enough and what i was eating was not very clean food. It was about the diet not being insane about running for 6 hours or wasting my time on a treadmill for more than 30 mins. Now that i have figured it out i do not work out for more than 45-60 mins a day 5 days a week and still loose 1-2 lbs of FAT a week and Yes i gain about 1lb of muscle in place of that. So explain to me why killing myself working out is going to do what exactly?? besides waste my time.0

I want to continue with this i like having a target!0

I loved this challenge in November and will definitely participate in December!
tarmacsports - you know as well as I do that this journey is different for everyone, and what works for one doesn't work for another. those who choose to participate in this challenge enjoy working out harder and longer than others - for some of us, it's our only "me" time for the day and it's a big stress relief to push our bodies further than we thought we could. I am happy that you have found what works for you and know how your body works - please respect that burning 5,000 calories a week is what works best for us and we love having a group to support and motivate each other.0 -
I like this. I know I can burn 5000 calories a week.0

I'm in! Can I count my cleaning hours?0

I hope tarmacsports doesn't discourage too many people from pursuing this challenge. I was a little apprehensive about doing it too several months ago. I'm not actively trying to lose weight any longer as I have attained my desired weight range. I actually attribute my success in losing the last 20 pounds of 70 overall to this challenge. I don't follow any particular diet plan, I simply eat the foods I like in moderation during the weekdays. I eat at least half of my exercise calories, so I can eat pretty well as a result. I'm 47 years old now and I feel fitter than I was in my 20's. I can meet the 5000 calorie challenge every week now by just being disciplined enough to workout 5 to 6 times a week for 45 minutes to an hour. I've always enjoyed running and biking. These activities tend to burn calories at a higher rate than some other activities. I think if people find something they really enjoy and excel at, they will find this challenge worthwhile and may achieve similar success and at least improve their fitness level. The journey is the most valuable part of this process. Accomplishing the goal is just icing on the cake. Over the past few years I have taken up an interest in cycling, so I have one arguably insane thing that I train for and that is century (100+ mile) bike rides. I enjoy biking and if the weather and scenery are awesome, I don't really mind the 4 to 6 hours it takes to complete the ride.0

Sounds like a good plan! Should we post daily or once/ week? Any rules to this?0

absolutely the journey is much different for everyone. i do like the 5k calorie challenge. Its very easy for me to reach that goal in 4 days. in my case it do me no good to burn off that many calories when i can barely get enough food in me to reach a 2k calorie healthy diet. So i store EVERYthing. My metabolism is finally working but no matter how much i work out even burning 5k calories in one day will i drop more than 2lbs a week. For me i work out for 30 -45 mins a day and ill loose the same weight as if i worked out for 4 hours. I want to understand how to burn more fat than i am.0

Week 1
11/28 - Monday - 1,510 (56 minutes/684 calories burned kickboxing, 42 minutes/510 calories burned elliptical, 39 minutes/316 calories burned treadmill incline walking)
11/29 - Tuesday

12/01 - Thursday
12/02 - Friday

12/04 - Sunday
Total: 1,510
To Go: 3,4900 -
So far this week
Monday 333
Tuesday 558 Sub total is 891
So my normal workout will only get me to 891 times 3 will be about 2700 with one trainer led workout estimated to be about 400 with about 200 cardio will only make 3300.
I would have to add 1700 to make it to 5000? I'll have to think on this. My problem with working out more is that it makes me really hungry and then I consume the extra calories that I usually don't use which myfitnesspal adds into our daily allowance.
So in going through online database of exercises this is what I might add:
1 mini golf outing 1 hour: 191 calories
5 days of situps for 10 minutes: 85/day
5 days of jumprope for 5 minutes 53/day
non game basketball: 20 minutes 140/day (do twice)
Guitar standing up 10 minutes/ day/3 days 32 /day
this would total: 191+85*5+53*5+140*2+32*3=1257
Oh still short: maybe I should add 15 minutes to my elliptical workout for 3 days to make up the difference. Or some time on the WII. FYI: I don't play guitar, but have some DVDs I gave to the kids.0 -

Well, when I started out I was losing 3-4 pounds per week. Now that I'm 13 pounds from my goal weight, I'm eating more calories and slowing the weight loss a little (purposefully). And the more I exercise, the better I feel! Plus, I'm working on my endurance levels because I'm running a half marathon in February and need to be accustomed to 2-3 hours of continuous exercise. I don't feel it's a waste of my time at all. I don't miss out on anything I did before except watch television...I've come to the realization that watching TV was the REAL waste of my time. Now I'd rather go on a long walk with my dog. Anyway, thanks for your comment. Of course, you don't have to join. It's not for everybody. Have a great weekend! )0 -

Yeah! What she said!!0 -
For the questions asked: You can post as many times/wk as you want. I only post on Mondays. Yes, you can log calories burned doing ANYTHING! And, no, it is NEVER too late to join the challenge. Also, please join even if you think burning 5,000 calories/wk is impossible for you. It is always good to have a goal to work towards.
Just think, "If you always do what you've always done, then you'll always get what you've always got!"
*Everyone's doing great so far...keep up the great work! I know it will be hard this month but we CAN do it!*0
