I'm not great with distinguishing between American accents very well. To me there's a general US accent, (the ones you get on most american comedies), which doesn't sound that strong that I'd find most pleasant....
...and then there's the strong southern accent which are the ones I find the most annoying.
I realise there's more than 2 different accents but being not from America I can't find them myself.
To the person saying all British people sound smart. You obviously haven't been to some parts of England ! People have already mentioned the West country and Essex. Also, a lot of the chavs you have here you definitely wouldn't think they sounded smart!
I get a kick of how chavs talk. Aren't they the ones that say "innit"? I can tell Keira Knightley talks different than say Lily Allen or Victoria Beckham. One of my paramedics is originally from Yorkshire and he sounds way different than anything I've ever heard. I like how they talk up there lol.0 -
I am from Germany and study English and the different accents/dialects.
I luuuurve (as in jelly legs and stuff) the Southern drwal most. But the kind that was popular amongst the higher society in the 1950s. I also adore the working type cowboy drawl ("yes ma'am" anyone?)
I also like the Bostonian accent because it's quite similar to certain English dialects.
As for most annoying, hmm...Probably the ghetto Englishes that rape and murder the English language like "yo dawg, you down for tha shizzle" or whatever, really -.-0 -
I'm from the sticks of Pennsylvania and I have a mild southern twang..but with a sententiously vivid vernacular...void of grandiloquence of course. ;]
I find other southern accents comforting and pleasant...NY,NJ accents are off-putting.0 -
In regards to the English accent, yes many different kinds of accents from England. My trainer has the "Ozzy Osbourne" accent and I spend the majority of my day saying "pardon, could you please repeat that?" when he comes to visit each year. I have a head ache by the end of the day, but I love him to death!0

Man, gets me EVERY time! lol I'm a sucker for a cowboy with the southern drawl and "yes, ma'am"-ing me all the time, :laugh:0 -
I don't have an accent. I've heard myself speak and it sounds normal!0

Wow! From Michigan and didn't even realize we have any particular accent. I will give you this, I hear a lot of "warsh" for wash (something I've been working on lol). Imagine moving to Michigan having a Texas/ New York accent. Horrible!0

I am American and am exempt from having an accent like people from other countries do.0

I am from Philadelphia, USA and hate my accent. I think the east coast has the worst.0

HAHAHA! That's awesome! I have been out of the state of Mass. for 30 years, and not only do people STILL tell me I have a "PAHk the cAH in HAHvad's yAHd" accent, but my hubby says I STILL drive like I live in Mass.!! LOL! :drinker:
PS... Go Red Sox, Bruins, Patriots, and Celtics!0 -

I'm from Maryland and as far as I know, I personally don't have an accent. There are some in this area that do though. I pronounce everything properly though. I love slight southern accents though. I was in Auburn, AL a few months ago and it was like being in heaven listening to the women talk. It wasn't too strong but it wasn't non-existent either.
Everyone in the world has "an accent". You do not think you have one because that is normal for you, but if you went to another country, or sometimes even another state, they would think you have an accent and they don't.
For example, I never realized people would think I had an accent, but once I went to New Jersey, and I was talking to a group of people. They all had the "southern-ish accent" that many Jersey people have, and they said my accent was funny. I was of course dumbfounded and was wondering why they thought I had an accent when they were the one's with the "funny accent".
I'm from Maryland too. We Marylanders do not have accents, unless we are from Balmer hon. Or from Southern Maryland y'all.
LOL...0 -
I have a friend from Montana. You have an accent.0

I live in TN, but my entire family is Canadian. There is quite an accent difference, but somehow I (softly) blend them.
Yes, I have used ya'll and eh in the same sentence before, but it's pretty unusual. :]
The southern accent doesn't really bother me until someone redneck shows up. Then it drives me crazy.
As for my favorites, soft French or British accents are so easy to listen to.0 -
I'm from Maryland too. We Marylanders do not have accents0

oh, you have a british accent? excuse me while i take my clothes off.
i dislike every american accent :grumble:0 -
I tease my Ohioan hubby for the way he says certain words, and I love a light southern accent. I tend to pick up accents where ever I go, so depending on where I am, is how I sound! LOL!
I'm a sucker for Scandinavian English as well. I can pick them out of a crowd. (Since my dad is Danish, I hear it a lot with my aunts, uncles, & cousins).
As for pawn and porn, as a midwesterner, there is a distinct difference... P-ah-wn (pawn) and P-oh-rn (porn). But I can see how for other areas of the world it would sound the same with their accents. :laugh:0 -
