    Hey - question for you guys -- do any of you do races? My friends and I are thinking of entering a women's only race in February and I can't decide which distance to do... They offer 30, 60, 80, 100. 30 would be no challenge. But this is my first ride -- anyone have any suggestions for a rookie cyclist doing her first race?

    And any training advice, in addition to daily rides?

    Kate: I've done 62 miles on Tallahassee FL Spaghetti 100 annually and averaged 10 mph 1st year and 12 mph 2nd year. To train I took 10-15 mile rides 2-3 days a week, with a big ride on same day of week the race will be on. The big ride was 10 less the full race distance 2 weeks before and 20 less 3 weeks out and so forth (last week was just 2 easy rhythm rides). All of this was on MTB, so if you r road riding, distance and training might be different and/or your starting point for training may be different. The weekly bigger rides are good to test what eating and drinking is comfortable and necessary. Pasta load night before, oatmeal morning of 1 hour out, gu and clif blocks during rides was my pref-supported rides will get you variety like pb&j bananas or cokes. Pedia lite for more successful re-hydration and arnica gel for sore muscles are my aces in the hole. RTW
