Please tell me I am not the only one

Since I have a 13 yr old at home I have to keep some chips.cookies etc in the house or face mutiny. But I also try to plan out my snacks just like my meals to try to avoid the problem. Then there are the days I eat a whole can of pringles in 10 min. So no you are most definatly not alone.0

I agree. The reasoning doesn't make sense to me.
I do not do this. When I think things will tempt me, I throw them in the trash.
Same here. Otherwise, I just force them on other people (who usually willing accept). :bigsmile:0 -

I do the same thing. If it is here and in eye sight, when I'm bored I want to eat snacks, even when I'm not hungry. I have to hide what is in the house, well, my son does, so I won't eat them. After the snacks that are currently in the house are gone, we will not be buying the yummy but fattening snacks. My son actually suggested this since he wants to help me too. I would have fruits or veggies in the house and I would go for the fattening snacks instead and the heathly food goes bad. Maybe after the bad food is gone, I will eat the fruits/veggies when I feel the need to eat something. I do keep chocolate chips in the freezer for when I get a craving, at work and home. I just grab a few choc chips and it gets rid of my sweet tooth.0

My freezer is my friend when it comes to treats. I did eat more yummiest than I really should have, but when I realised what I was doing I tucked it all into the freezer. I won't eat it frozen (too much expensive dental work) so I won't scarf it all down at once. If I have space in my calories for the day and have fulfilled my protein and fibre goal I'll take 1-2 toffees or other small treat out, let it warm up and enjoy. Anything that can't be frozen? Into the trash with something nasty on top or down the toilet.0

You're NOT the only one. I struggle with this too. No matter who thinks what about how your mind works...its real.0
-
It's completely irrational but I am guilty of this as well... LOL0
-
I am completely the same way! I don't feel quite as tempted since starting MFP, but there is more than one reason I don't keep Oreos in the house. :noway:0

I have to throw tempting food in the trash and then "soil it" or I will dig it out for one more bite! A clump of hair from my boyfrined's brush usually does the trick!0

This. Very much this. I'm baffled by some of what's being said. I get cravings and make not excellent food choices. Today is an example. But eating something in large quantity to be relieved it isn't there is a bit foreign. Sounds like keeping it out of sight out of mind is a good choice at least until you get used to being more healthy . Good luck.0 -
Solution...don't bring it into the house. Outta sight, outta mind.0

You are definitely not alone. My weaknesses are sweets and chips.0

I am sooo guilty of doing this!
It's nice to know I'm not the only one. It bogs down my mind some days. (I think way too much!) My thought is if it's gone then I won't have to worry about craving it so I eat it all, usually in 1 or 2 sittings. Once the bf brought over a peach pie and we had our 1 piece each. As soon as he left I immediately grabbed it from the fridge, got a spoon and dug in!
i'm slowly learning why I do such things and have not pigged out in a few weeks.

Haha! You are so certainly not the only one that does this. I was at a party for my husband's work just two months ago and a girl was telling me that the anxiety about ...."to eat or not to eat" drives her so crazy that she'll polish off the rest of the cheesecake just to be like, "There, it's gone. No more debate".
I've done the same thing with brownies, I'm sure.0 -
You're not alone....lately I give myself little pep talks though. It helps a little. But what helps more is not buying the sweets (in my case -- I'm safe around mostly everything else). But I also indulge, too. I think the best thing for me is to buy single servings of something I like (such as one candy bar, instead of keeping cookies in the house).
But, you definitely have a lot of company. I also think I have those feelings because I'm worried (on some level) that there's never enough. I don't know where this feeling comes from, but it's there.0 -
You are not alone.. I do that at times!! frustrating =/ People say keep it out the house but its hard when you have others in the home that aren't on this same diet or lifestyle. I do see it all as a mental thing and we just gotta have the willpower to not eat them.0
-
Yep - and I've learned it's not very effective to try to hide things from myself.0
-
I do this too. My weakness is potato chips.0

Portions, what are portions? This first week I am looking at portions. I usually eat everything and don't even think about it. I guess that is why I have to lose twenty pounds.I have to admit when I don't want to eat something I'll put detergent on it and throw it in the garbage.Simply throwing something in the garbage is not enough!0

The fudge got me good this Christmas. I don't keep sweets on hand or at least not gluten free ones. So long as they are gluten, you can't pay me to touch it but those GF goodies.... best to just not have them around.
I murdered Udi's Snickerdoodles and vanilla ice cream.
I'm the same way but with everything.0 -

Never said it was rational
Luckily it tends to only be stuff like holiday candy and thank God that only comes a few times a year (but dammit now they're putting cadbury creme eggs out MONTHS before Easter!). Right now I have oreos, fudge poptarts (Mmmmm) and chocolate covered granola bars in the pantry, but those don't tempt me. I can keep those in the house and eat them in moderation, but a box of chocolates (or God forbid chocolate covered cherries) Halloween candy or Easter candy, it's game over.0 -
Dilly Bars are my worst one... I can portion everything else out nicely for the most part... but when there is a box of dilly bars in my fridge it just doesn't make it more than a day or two... They are my weakness.0
-
Oh you are sooo not alone. I don't usually buy my trigger foods because I will fixate on them and binge until they are all in my belly. When I end up with delicious binge worthy foods in the house (like the delicious box of Fannie May pecan turtles my MIL sent for Christmas), I put them in the cabinet over the fridge, That way I will have to want them enough to drag a chair over from the other room. My laziness usually outweighs my craving
And omg cadbury cream eggs.....they are my biggest weakness. I saw them in the grocery store check out aisle and had to RUN!0 -
i Do the exact thing. Even to somethings that aren't as good but not really considered "diet" food. If I can ever get over that issue, that could be one of the best days of my life.0

I used to be more like what you are describing, feeling like I needed to eat a lot of certain goodies, but I'm not really anymore. I actually think that it kind of comes from growing up in a house with 3 siblings (at least in my case). Whenever my mom would buy snacks they would be gone pretty quickly, so I got in the habit of trying to get 'my share' before someone else did. There were too many times when I missed out on the good stuff. Then it kind of became a habit, but I'm over it now. If I buy a special snack or treat for myself, I usually try to eat it in moderation. I've learned to slow down and savor the flavor of things too. It's much more satisfying that way, and I find that I don't eat as much when I really think about what I'm eating, the tastes, textures, etc.
Oh, I used to have a problem with cheesecake. It was around 10 years ago, and I was a whole lot skinnier then (go figure), but I knew it wasn't good for me. One piece was never enough, so I stopped buying it all together & now I have lost the taste for it completely. Thank goodness!0 -
I have to tell my wife to hide the candy and goodies we get. And she does!
Sometimes, like now, I am very motivated to lose weight, so right now it isn't a problem. But I still tell her to hide it just in case! :ohwell:0 -
I ate a tin of bisquits in ONE day!!!!0
-
You're not alone - I used to do that alllllllll the time lol! Now I don't buy it!0
-
I am exactly the same as you
We just can't have chocolate, crisps or biscuits in the house at all as i have zero will power if these things are hanging around.
At Christmas we had a big tin of chocolates and i had to finish them before the New Year so that I could start back on the plan, but that meant eating them twice as quickly and eating most of them myself! My husband is the complete opposite - he can have chocolate just laying around and it doesn't bother him. He once had a mars bar in the fridge for about a year! (that was back when i had more will power).
The only bad thing we have in the house at the moment is some turkish delight chocolate in the fridge, but that's quite safe as i'm not too keen on them. Oh and my son has some chocolate in the fridge, but that's safe as well (i would never steal chocolate from a child! )0 -
Yeah I do this all the time. In my head it seems like if I eat it all at once, then I can start eating healthy again afterwards because there'll be no junk food in the house. But it never works that way in the end. Because what will happen is, I'll eat that whole bag of chocolate biscuits in one sitting, then the next few days I'll eat healthy because there's no bad food left to eat. But then there'll be a day where I'm just really tired or stressed and I get a massive craving for chocolate and just can't get the thought of it out of my head. So I end up going to the supermarket and buying another bag of chocolate biscuits and eating it that day.
So I figure it's best to leave it in the house where it's tempting me constantly. Because every time I'm tempted I'll eat some, but feel too guilty to eat all of it, and then when I get an insane craving for it, there'll only be half a bag left to eat anyway, which is better than the full bag I would have gone and bought from the supermarket and eaten otherwise.
Alternatively, tell yourself you're saving it for a special occasion, like when friends are coming over. Then put it in a special place, and make that the place you keep food for special occasions. If it's somewhere you're not seeing it constantly, you might forget it's there after a while, or at least you'll feel more guilty about wanting to eat it because you were saving it for something special.0
