i dont really care who sees me sweat or jiggle.. i do what i want regardless of what anyone else thinks.. my thinking is most people at the gym sweat and jiggle .. and the ones at home i dont care what they think . my neighbors already think im nuts in the summer when they watch me run around the yard up and down the hill with weights in my hands .. and i set up obstacle courses in the yard and do laps in the pool..sometimes i take out the cardio machines by the pool and go to town there too.. the whole world can sit on their wide behinds and watch me till the cows come home while i work on mine ..0

You go girl!! I'm right there with ya! Who cares what others think!!!0 -
You are certainly not alone. I don't like working out while anyone is watching either. I do my DVD's in the bedroom where the door can be shut.
Also, you might want to rethink your use of the word "retarded". There are a lot of folks out there with disabilities that might not want to be associated with a silly meaning.0 -
You know youre family. You don't really know the people at the gym. I can understand getting embarassed far more with the small audience you have a connection with rather than the larger audience you don't really know.0

I hate having to exercise in front of the bf. He knows not to make any comments but when I catch him looking I just can't help but feel embarrassed. :blushing: That being said I think its just all in my head.0
-
I'm totally with you on this! I've gotten used to it though and now my nine year old does them with me. However, I absolutely won't enter my weight on the Wii Fit or any of the dancing games that I exercise to. No way!0
-
Thanks for all of the responses! (And, if the word "retarded" offended anyone, I do apologize.) I knew this was going to be an obstacle for me, and I owned up to it and talked it out with the family lastnight, and they all agreed that if I want "private time" in the living room to do my thing, they will respect it and give me an hour when I ask for it. YAY!!0

I used to have a problem with anyone watching. I get up early to try to workout before my kids get up but sometimes they get up before I'm done. I'm not self conscious about it anymore but I still don't want anyone to talk to me while I'm working out. It's bad enough that they interrupted my "ME" time. They can at least let me focus on getting it done. The exception is my 2 year old. He actually cooperates pretty well. He's learned to sit there and watch or play until I'm done or he tries to do some of the moves. I suggest focusing on the fact that you are doing great things to improve your health instead of focusing on how your belly moves, etc. when you workout. I had to get over this myself. Be proud of what you're doing0

My husband is a mess! Chile the things he will say when I am doing my dumbbell squats... Maybe I am a sicko. I love it! lol0

That's great! You can go all out, girl! :bigsmile:0 -
, I just feel like I look like an orangutan in the middle of a seizure when I do it and don't want him to see me like that. I0

Ha! I won't do my Wii Zumba in front of my husband either. I just feel silly. When I start dancing, the dog looks at me for a minute and then gets up and walks away in disgust. So I prefer to dance alone.:laugh:0
-
Just think of the example you are setting for them.0

Glad I'm not alone. I don't mind working out at the gym-even in front of hot guys (and there are bunches at my gym.)
But I hate working out in front of my roommates. They are super sweet and supportive but I just feel weird. Plus they are in better shape than me so I wonder if they are secretly criticizing my techniques/ endurance/ form.
It's ok to be embarassed but any way you feel the key is to just DO IT. If you have to do it in front of someone, so what? It's your body, not theirs :-)0 -
You aren't the only one. I have no idea what causes it, but I am more comfortable @ a gym than my house!0
-
I HATE doing anything when my husband is around...I guess I don't want him to see my tummy jiggle, or I don't want to look awkward.0
-
So, it's funny.... I have, I guess you'd call it a mental block, about working out in the house. I would much rather workout at the gym. Well, now I'm doing the Chalean Extreme with my girlfriend and we're both working out at home. It doesn't matter if anyone is home or not, i just don't like working out at home, in the living room.... maybe it's the carpet? LOL... i don't know. I'm still trying to get over it though.0

Me! I close all the curtains in the off chance a neighbor might look over and see me in my window (that have sheers in them anyway). I don't mind if I am at the gym or whatever, but doing the exercise games and what have you are tough on me.0

That is totally me! I close all the curtains, lock the door, etc. I can't work out in front of anyone except for my boys (5 and 7). I'm single at the moment and actually had an old "friend" of mine hanging around for the past week... he was off work and I work from home so he figured it was cool to just hang around me. Finally yesterday I told him he had to go! Everyone can know I'm dieting... but exercising in front of anyone is hugely embarrassing for me. Maybe that will change when I don't have so much jiggly fat around... but for now.. no way!
Oh yeah, and I do the DVDs with the volume low because I'm afraid someone will walk up to the door and hear it. ESPECIALLY if I am doing a "fun easy day" I call them... Richard Simmons Party off the Pounds... so fun LOL but this is the first time I've ever even admitted to owning that DVD hehehe0 -
Hi
I work out at home in our basement - no windows... lol.
I refuse to work out in front of my husband, I get up at 5am - 6am - six days per week so I can work out before the house gets up... plus it creates me time with out any distractions.
I definately would feel uncomfortable with eyes on me.... I am not a fan of an audience.
I am with you girl... you do what you feel best and what works for you to reach your goals... this is about you and your healthy weight goals...0 -
As long as it's just my kids I'm the complete opposite. I don't do well at the gym because I feel like I look silly and I don'
t want to get all sweaty in public. At home if it's just the kids I can push myself and not care. But, my kids are pretty young and used to it by now. I do feel like that in front of my husband though and won't exercise with him home. For awhile he was going to the gym first thing in the morning and I was doing a half hour of exercise in the living room and then still doing my normal half hour in the afternoon while my youngest naps. But, now he's taking a college class and is up studying in the mornings so I'm down to just once a day until he's done.0 -
Ha, I get up before my family, but I always let my dogs in before I workout - I don't care if they watch, but poses a challenge when the labrador sticks her face in mine when I'm in plank, or on my back doing crunches & she gives kisses! LOL
This is too funny.. my puppy does the same thing... I have to take her out in the morning when I get up to work out (5:30am) and then put her back in her room while I work out because she is constantly jumping on me when I am trying to do crunches or planks... lol.
My puppy is a mix .. beagle x jack russell x pug ... she is 6 months old.0 -
No, I've always had the same problem. You can avoid seeing strangers if you choose, but family will know if you try and fail. However, I learned my son never even noticed after I'd lost 35 pounds. My daughter was extremely proud and began to pay attention to eating healthy herself. My children were old enough that I could leave them at home to walk, or excerise indoors while they were in school. If yours are younger than that, they will just think its a game. Don't give up. Once you build up some endurance, it was not quite so embarrasing to exercise in front of them. The role model you are setting for healthy living will be much more meaningful to you and them than you realise. Good luck.0

it's like you're in my head!0

I Have my 8 year old excersie with me..and we have good quality time together:)0
-
I used to be like this really bad in front of my boyfriend, until I worked out with him a few times. I like the Wii suggestion, your kids could play with you and than it won't be so much like "workout" as a time to spend time with your kids!0
-
USed to have it to-- than I embraced it, let the kids watch, encouraged them to join, and even made fun of myself a few times.... now they no longer laugh they are impressed (after trying it....)
Don't like it when my wife watches either... weird, I know-- but I am sefl concsious. not self concious at the gym unless I am lifting weights.. newbie with the weights.
I'm self-conscious when my husband watches me too, so either you're not weird or we both are. When I was starting Insanity, I didn't want to wait to start it (I was kind of anal about the day matching the one on the calendar lol), but I knew that he wasn't going anywhere. So I just sucked it up and did it and discovered he wasn't paying much attention, anyway. And my daughter kind of likes to join me, which adds some comic relief since she's 5.0 -
I used to feel the same way, BUT not any more. I have a treadmill down stairs in my laundry room.My husband knows better than to bother me (I guess he got helled at to many times). My one son comes in and yells "Work it baby work it" LOL BUT I went from a sz tight 16 to sz 8. Now I am proud.. Don't let people bother you. Soon they will be commenting on how good you look.
Good Luck!!0 -
I used to stop dead in my tracks if my husband walked in the room while I was exercising. He never said anything, never made fun of me ... it was all me. At some point, that changed, but I don't know when or why.
As for the kids ... they know to stay out of my way when I'm working out, so I don't have to worry about them watching me. LOL
If you're uncomfortable, move to another room or maybe just mention to them you'd rather they not be there during your "you" time.0 -
I'm so glad I found this thread. I just got into a big fight with my boyfriend because he wouldn't leave the living room so I could do P90X. It's hard enough without feeling a pair of eyes at my back. I get embarrassed and distracted, and I don't give it my all. He says that I'm spoiled and I need to get over it, and I say I need his respect. He apparently thinks he's helping me by trying to force me into it. I think he's being a big jerk.
