Does black caffeinated coffee count as daily water

Has anyone asked this question of their doctor or a nutritionist?

    When I saw a nutritionist she mentioned coffee as being a separate beverage, although black coffee has no sugar and hardly any calories (if any at all) so adding it in addition to your daily water shouldn't be a big deal. But, no, it won't substitute as water.

    Typically, anything with caffeine in it is likely to dehydrate you, and to drink equal amounts of water. My vote is on no, it's not part of your daily water.

    technically for every cup of coffee you have, you should be drinking an extra cup of water bc the coffee dehydrates you .

    ok, I will share this one more time...

    Coffee... Log it as Coffee
    Tea .... Log it as Tea
    Soda / Pop .... Log it as Soda / Pop
    Apple Juice .... Log it as Apple Juice
    Milk..... Log it as Milk
    Water.... Hello log THAT as Water

    Its really not that difficult to remember that. Why must you try and give yourself "excuses". Water is Water is Water.

    According to the Mayo clinic web site it only has a diuretic effect if consumed in large quantities ie; 5-7 cups daily.

  • Old school answer is Coffee is a diuretic and therefore can not replace water.......new school theory which your Doc apparently subscribes to, is that all fluids are effectively diuretics and coffee in small amounts (5 or less cups a day) can be counted against your daily fluid intake......My own personal opinion is that anything not as pure as water does not count against my fluid intake, but does get counted in my calroie intake.....if you google "is coffe a diuretic?" you will get professional arguements on both sides of the issue. It seems, much like everything else in the wolrd, no one can agree.

    Yes and no. Caffeine dehydrates you by acting as a diuretic but that's only if you consume LARGE quantities of it. By large, I mean 5-7 cups of coffee, 10 cokes (which you shouldn't be drinking anyway), 4-5 energy drinks... etc..

    Needless to say, a cup or two of straight black coffee won't cause you to be dehydrated. Yes.. you can count it as water.

  • That article was very helpful. I've been feeling guilty trying to get all that water down during the day. That's a LOT of water to be drinking.

    I didn't even know it was under debate. I learned something new. But I drink 5 cups of coffee some days, so there's a little truth to it.

    I've done some research on this (not extensive, but about an hour of reading), and the jury is still out.

    First, there is a question about where the 8 glasses a day comes from. There is no real answer where this came from, though there is speculation. But part of the 8 glasses a day has been rebuked, since on average a person gets 4 just from the food they eat.

    As for caffeinated beverages, the amount of water retained from them is somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2, with the remainder being flushed out because of the affects of the caffeine in the beverage.

    I personally don't count them, but I also don't worry as much about getting 8 glasses (8 8oz glasses) each day. Some days I get 6, others I get 10.

    Not really - I asked the question so I could adjust as needed. But I had no idea this would be such a divisive subject.

    Caffeine is a diuretic, but an extremely weak one. The fluid in a cup of coffee outweighs the "diuretic effect" of the coffee bean. If you usually have a cup of coffee each morning and your body is use to it, then you can consider it part of you daily fluid intake.
    I am not a daily coffee drinker so I do not use it as my water intake, but you will not cause any harm if you do. I would not suggest you use only coffee as part of you daily fluid intake.
