    Hey Everyone,
I have recently been certified as a nutrition specialist through AASDN.
I am here to tell you that breakfast is an essential meal for everyone!
Think about your body being a car.
Your car will not run properly if you dont put fuel into it, well thats the same thing with your body.
Breakfast is your fuel that will help replenish your energy after it has gone through hours of starvation from sleep.
if you skip breakfast, your body will use up fuels from other sources and deplete your nutrient storages.
This slows down your metabolism and will in the end cause you to need less calories through out the day!
So if you eat when you wake up, your body will have enough charge to work faster, better and stronger.
Also you'll be less hungry later on in the day!
If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to ask!

Uhhhhhhhhhhh, the car thing is actually a better argument for intermittent fasting. Unless of course you go and put fuel in your car every time you go out.

I'll never understand why it's used as an argument for eating more frequently. It's completely illogical.

the oatmeal, crasins, rasins and brown sugar are all sugar- sugar will make you more hungry. if oatmeal is your thing switch to one with low/no sugar, get rid of the other sugar items and add some walnuts in it. you are likely making your blood levels spike first thing in the morning- and therefore when you crash you want more as opposed to that leveling you out for 3-4 hours.

good luck- I'm rooting for you:flowerforyou:

I agree and worry about not eating breakfast either until i read your post. I can't handle food early in the morning and eating breakfast makes me more hungry throughout the day. I have my coffee in the morning, lunch in the afternoon and some cottage cheese or yogurt late afternoon and then dinner and a snack. This seemed to work for me when i lost 39lbs the first time i dieted with weight watchers so im doing the same now.

Hi, I'm new to this, but as a dietitian thought I may shed some light. Thank you for sharing your feelings. Typically the advice for the general public is issued because there is evidence based research that shows some sort of significance in the nutrition statement. The reason that breakfast is touted so much is because it has SOOOOO many benefits. All throughout school junior, high and some of college I had NO breakfast, in fact many days I didn't eat until about 3 pm. I did this for no particular reason, just because. UNTIL I learned about ketosis, metabolism and overall energy and what no food does to your body.

AS health professionals we're not saying scarf down a 600+ calories, in fact the fewer calories, and more nutritiously sound options, the better. A glass of milk and a banana are more than sufficient. Try to eat a complex carb (for the energy you need), a lean protein (to help you stay full) and something with fiber (to help stabilize your blood sugar levels).

The reason you are hungrier throughout the day, is because your body is burning more calories, hence losing more weight. Just like when you turn on a car, gas is being used, making the need to refuel more often-- breakfast turns on your "metabolic engine" Just refuel with lower cal picks- Hope this helps. :)

So you are saying that this so called ” engine” turns off? Please elaborate on this

The reason its called breakfast, is because it indeed, breaks your fasting, whatever time you have your first meal is considered breakfast. You have a lull in energy intake while sleeping, but you still have physiologic functions, for ex. gas exchanges, growth and repair and regulating body temperature- all which require ATP- or energy. When you aren't consuming calories, the body uses the stored glycogen in your liver, when that runs out for prolonged periods of fasting, it takes glycogen from your muscles and fat. This is harmful because prolonged catabolism can lead to increased lactic acid build up. Your body has a pH of 7.4, added acid reduces your pH levels, increasing acid in your blood- this is called ketosis. This type of fuel cannot be used by the brain (because the brain protects itself from toxicity). This is why fasting can make one feel tipsy and groggy.

From what I understand this site is for HEALTHIER lifestyes, not dying to be thinness. I am recommending breakfast one hour within your time of waking up, to start your metabolism and stop the ketosis process. Grabbing something small is fine, just eat something! The point that many are not understanding is that when you eat, you are hungrier because your metabolism needs energy in order to digest the food, this is how you lose weight properly. Hope this helps.

thanks for the information, and I think that it all applies on extended fasts. But extending the fast by 4 hours for instance?

My personal experience is that skipping breakfast is fine for me, I do not feel tipsy, groggy, tired, lethargic, cranky or otherwise.

    Works for me.

My job is to offer you more information to make a more enlightened choice. Try breakfast for a week, if you don't poop within an hour of eating, know that its not right for you- however if you do (poop), you will better understand that your "metabolic engine" has been turned on and is revving to go.

I haven't read through all posts but I want to throw my opinion in.

For me, it depends on how one defines breakfast. Is it about the food itself, or about the time? I do have breakfast every morning but sometimes 3 hours after I got up. I also don't care what nutritionists etc. say because I won't eat unless I am hungry and it takes me a few hours before I feel I have to eat.
I never had any problems doing it this was. When I work out in the morning, I have a snack before I leave. After my work out I am hungry and breakfast tastes so much better when you don't force it.

Can you clarify what poop has to do with metabolism, and if she doesn't poop, does this indicate that her metabolic rate is lower?

Since i'm obviously not as smart as you, can you elaborate on fat's capacity to store glycogen? I've heard of the liver and skeletal muscle stores, but not fat's

Are you sure you're not confusing ketosis with ketoacidosis?

Eating breakfast starts your metabolism burning. A trainer told me that feeling those "hunger rumbles" means my metabolism is burning. If you don't eat anything in the morning and don't feel anything either, that means your metabolism isn't awake. Eating something with protein keeps me fuller longer. Then I eat another snack with protein about 3 hours later. This keeps that hunger away until lunch. Eating every 2-3 hours will keep your metabolism burning all day long.

As for "pooping", please clarify WHY this has anything to do with the subject. Are you saying that one should poop after every meal (6 times I presume based on your enlightened information)

Using a toilet plunger burns 150 calories/hour so this could indeed increase your energy expenditure.

    My god we're onto something.

aah, it's the cardio of pooping, got it now. I'm sure it has something to do with stoking a "fire" of sorts.

Personally, if I don't eat within the first hour after waking up I'm a wreck. It doesn't have to be a lot. Sometimes just a boiled egg or a slice of whole wheat toast with some peanut butter and I'm good to go. I'm not a fan of HUGE breakfasts. I think everyone is different, though. :drinker:

Can you please quantify what time period is required before liver glycogen is used? How long of a fast is required before harmful effects occur.

WITHIN 3-4 HOURS OF NO FOOD, SO IF YOU STOP EATING AT 7PM YOU WILL PROBABLY START USING GLYGOGEN STORED IN THE LIVER AT ABOUT 11, WHICH IS FINE, BECAUSE YOUR LIVER STORES IT FOR THIS PURPOSE. HOWEVER WHEN IT IS ALL USED UP, BY ABOUT 8-10 HOURS OF THE FAST YOU WILL START SPARING GLYCOGEN TO BE USED FOR THE BRAIN ONLY, AND USE MUSCLE AND FAT ENERGY, WHEN BROKEN DOWN RELEASES LACTIC ACID.

Also, what about the long term effects. In other words, what sort of compensatory responses are there, if any, when you do finally eat?

YOUR BODY WILL GO INTO TEMPOARARY STARVATION MODE IN THE FIRST 24 HOURS, HOPING THAT YOU WILL FEED IT SOON. YOU WILL LOSE, WATER, SOME FAT AND SOME MUSCLE. HOWEVER IF IT IS LONGER THAN 24 HOURS, MUSCLE BREAKDOWN IS MUCH MORE QUICKLY. THIS IS WHY YOU SEE PEOPLE WHO ARE TRAPPED FOR 3 DAYS, LETS SAY BECAUSE OF AN EARTHQUAKE ARE NOTICEABLY THINNER. YOU WILL HAVE A DEFICIENCY OF ELECTROLYTES, VITAMINS, MINERALS AND NATURALLY CALORIES.
From what I understand this site is for HEALTHIER lifestyes, not dying to be thinness.

I do not eat breakfast. Am I dying thin? Why are you assuming that skipping breakfast has anything at all to do with total daily energy intake since we're not discussing that, we are just discussing meal timing, which is largely irrelevant under somewhat normal eating procedures (intra-day fasting).

    WASN'T ADDRESSED TO YOU PERSONALLY.

The point that many are not understanding is that when you eat, you are hungrier because your metabolism needs energy in order to digest the food, this is how you lose weight properly. Hope this helps.

Thermic effect of food is not frequency or timing dependent. It still occurs regardless of when you eat.

CONFUSED A BIT BY THIS-- WERE NOT LOOKING ONLY AT FOOD DIGESTION, BUT OVERALL MAINTAINENCE OF THE BODY. SO ALTHO THE TEF IS DIET INDUCED, IT IS THE ENERGY NEEDED TO DIGEST, ABSORB AND ASSIMILATE NUTRIENTS, WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF YOUR BODY? HOW DOES THAT GET WHAT IT NEEDS-THE BODY IS A COMPLETE MACHINE AND WORKS AS ONE, NOT INDEPENDENTLY OF ANOTHER SEGMENT. YOU STILL NEED CALORIES TO SIT, WALK, LIE DOWN, HAVE YOUR HEART BEAT, KEEP YOU WARM NOT ONLY FOR LOSING WEIGHT. YOU DONT PUT FOOD IN YOUR BODY, IT WILL TAKE THE ENERGY OUT OF ANOTHER SOURCE

Finally, while your credentials might be impressive to some, they don't validate your argument.

I personally always eat something, usually oatmeal for breakfast. Its not right when I get up, but about an hour after I get to work and settle in. I find that it helps me keep from "snacking" until lunch.

Are you aware of programs such as Intermittent Fasting and do you believe that these are inherently catabolic and dangerous despite both anecdotal and scientific evidence?

Of course, but I am assuming that we are discussing the timing of nutrients and not total amount. I eat one meal per day very often. I am assuming here, that in this discussion, we are strictly looking at the timing of nutrients. For example, when I refer to skipping breakfast you would of course still eat those calories that day, you're just eating them later, because metabolically it makes zero difference.
