Does anyone use coconut oil

I love it on a baked sweet potato. With a little sweetener (I use agave), it's better than the way I used to eat them- with heaps of butter and brown sugar. I also brush a little on corn tortilla strips and bake my own chips. So yummy! It's great on the skin, too.0

It should be with the oils in the grocery store or in the natural foods section. I bought mine at Whole Foods, Dr. Bronner's Organic Virgin Coconut Oil was on sale for $7.99 for a one pound jar. Their 365 brand was $6.99/jar. Make sure it is VIRGIN oil. The processed stuff is very bad for you (the kind of coconut oil they use in junk foods = trans fat city because it is hydrogenated).0 -

i use coconut vinegar as salad dressing.. its good no calories0

I use extra virgin organic coconut oil and I feel a significant increase in my energy and I am MUCH less tempted to eat junk or overeat because my body wasn't getting enough good fats. It's supposed to be very beneficial for weight loss if you follow a low carb diet. I make my own chocolate from coconut oil - you just melt 5 tbsps of oil, add 6 tbsps of unsweetened cocoa powder, a splash of heavy cream, and add stevia and vanilla to flavor! It's amazing and I prefer to have my oil as an actual 'snack' instead of adding it while cooking a meal where I won't notice it.0

Does anyone use coconut oil? It really works? How much use? Any information is valid. I just bought one, but I still have many doubts. Thank you for your attention
I use it all the time for cooking anything that needs oils. I'm reluctant to heat unsaturated oils, as they're more susceptible to oxidization. I have used extra-virgin organic coconut oil for years... "It really works" for eggs, fish, chicken, you name it.0 -
I used it on my hair this morning Natural, homemade coconut oil straight from the islands (Micronesia).
You can use it on skin, in food, it's great!0 -
I use it in place of extra virgin olive oil to cook chicken, etc....it's also really good for your hair...put it on your ends (on dry hair), leave on for a few hours, then wash as normal!0

Do other coconut oils have a scent? I've seen a few of you post "it smells great." I have this stuff, and it doesn't smell like anything... http://www.louana.com/product-detail.aspx?productID=75&catID=44&pcatID=370

I use it for cooking. And sometimes as a moisturizer and hair treatment.
It works for those things.0 -
Am I the only one who thinks putting oil or butter in coffee sounds horrible? Yuck! :sick:0

The stuff I have doesn't have much aroma when cold, but does have a faint coconut smell while cooking. Not a strong smell like Hawaiian Tropic tanning oil.0 -
I was using it, but my dietician told me to stop as it would not aid my weight loss.....now I can't remember exactly what she said about it that made me quit. I wasn't taking it for other health benefits but strictly to see if it could help with weight loss.0

In everything and on everything. I have put it in my coffee. I have sauteed veggies or greens in it (prefer butter though).
I have tried unsalted butter in my coffee and I loved it. (Will be trying "bullet-proof coffee" soon. You can google it).
Eating fat will not make you fat. (Eating fat and carbs will make you fat. Remove the carbs and all of a sudden saturated fats - animal fats - become very healthy for you. In fact, your body converts excess carbs - the carbs it can't use immediately - to saturated fat and stores it. Most of the fat we have on our bodies is saturated fat).
Spectrum makes an virgin coconut oil and a refined coconut oil (both cold-pressed). The virgin smells like coconuts and has a very, very faint taste to it. The refined doesn't. I found Louana at Walmart for 6$ (I pay more than this for Spectrum) so I grabbed it.
The MCTs (medium-chain fatty acids) in coconut oil and pastured butter are more likely to be used as energy - by the body - rather than stored as fat. Saturated fats are very stable fats.
I eat mostly fat. About 60%-80% of my daily calories come from fat. I am maintaining a healthy weight of 110.6lbs (at least this has been the lowest). Protein and fat do not make me gain.0 -
There is another good thread on this with the addition of some information on apple cider vinegar. Yes, I use it and LOVE IT. YUMMM!0

That's the stuff you want to avoid, it is refined. You want something that specifically says "Virgin" oil. The virgin has the texture of vegetable shortening when cool but when heated goes liquid. It smells and tastes like coconut.
This is the brand of the virgin type I picked up at Whole Foods (on sale this week for $7.99):

Does anyone know where to get coconut oil in New Zealand? we have coconut body oil but I have never seen coconut cooking oil so the thought of coconut oil in my coffee makes me cringe a little! :sick:0

I used it to take gum out of my 2 year old's hair last week. It worked like magic!
Last week I made popcorn and topped it with coconut oil mixed with chocolate chips and a little salt and it was delicious! I also tried it with coconut oil, cocoa powder and a little sugar and salt- both were good!0 -

I'm not sure what they use in junk food as I am not a consumer but refined coconut oil has no transfat. It has less nutritional value than Virgin Coconut OIl but is not harmful.

From what I could see, the link below addresses the transfat thing in Candy and Coffee Creamer and I'm guressing that's what you were refering to.

I bought my VCO at Trader Joe's. A 16 oz. jar for $5.99.
I put it on my Triple Health 100 calorie English Muffin and sprinkle cinnamon spice on it at breakfast. Very good!0 -

Does anyone know where to get coconut oil in New Zealand?
Apparently the Maori use coconut oil as part of their traditional cooking, so I would think it would be available anywhere they shop.
Here's one place I found by googling: http://www.frot.co.nz/nature/coconut.htm0 -
I bought but not yet arrived. But I see he is very caloric and is very saturated. At the same time, I'm not sure, but come Dier that fat it will not for the body but rather slightly to the liver and is transformed into energy, leaving us more willing, active. And the saturated it would not be bad. That is, it is a thermogenic product, so it helps you lose weight.
Do you have noticed about this change? weight loss? I confess that I'm scared about fat / saturated it would be high ... then reduce the amount of weight.
Thank you all for responding!0 -
I like coconut oil and cook with it a lot (and butter and ghee and bacon fat).
As far as adding it to coffee: I have tried it and couldn't get it down. Blech. Unsalted butter sounds a bit better, but why not just use heavy cream? Or, rather, what is the supposed benefit of using high quality butter over high quality heavy cream?0
