Dressing your age- 30ish and up

I don't think it's about dressing your age, but I think it's about dressing in whatever makes you feel confident.
But what do I know, I'm just a young 24-year-old. I'll be 25 on Saturday though, eeeeek! :smokin:
Happy Early Birthday!0 -
Tell me about it....what is up with all the butt crack jeans?? I do like them to fit below my navel, but not so that it looks like my rear is pinched into a little butt muffin!!0

I don't believe in "dressing one's age." I do, however, believe that you will be judged in both how you look and how you carry yourself.

Well said.0 -
I wear skinny jeans when I'm feeling skinny. I'm 41, who cares. I don't dress like a teenager, but I love the skinny jeans. I don't wear midriff bearing tops because of the 3 sons that came out of my body, and my consideration for those around me. I don't want to be the old lady people are pointing at because she thinks she's 20, but I also don't want to be the mom running around in jeans to my rib cage and big, bulky color-block sweaaters. There is a balance, as far as I'm concerned. And dress in what you like. That. Is. All. lol
I like your attitude.
To be fair, I have now idea what would suit me at the moment. It's a fine line between fab or frumpy when you are 4 sizes larger than you used to be.
I have to remind myself I am 37 and not dress frumpy. I would wear skinny jeans if they suit me when i get to goal. I d be glad to dress younger, if I could figure out what looks nice.0 -
I didn't know there were fashion rules for my age.....45
Some may not like this but.....if my husband wants me to wear a short, tight mini skirt out - then I'm wearing a short, tight mini-skirt out.
I say go for it! My friends mom is prob 45-50 and she has the awesomest legs I have ever seen! She should not cover up her best asset in my opinion! And since she is comfy in short skirts she wears them regularly!0 -
Where I think the line gets crossed between "dressing your age" and "dressing appropriately" is when any overweight, unfit woman dresses in jeans that are too small, skirts that show the cellulite, and tops that show entirely too much cleavage. ANYONE no matter what age has no business showing off too much unless the body is nearly flawless and even then, there is such a thing as dressing appropriately. If you're sportin' the muffin-top, buy your jeans a size bigger. If your breasts are threatening to flop out, your top doesn't fit right. If it's jiggling and looks like cottage cheese...cover it. Don't wear the mini-skirt to work or to school to pick up your kids (or grandkids). Save them for the bar. Oh, and for you men out there...there are far less of you who offend so I wouldn't worry about it!!!0

I'll be 35 in 2 weeks and Im finding that the juniors jeans low rise is a nono for me..I feel like my crack is hangin out and if its not that my underwear IS.... :blushing:
I like alot of the urban wear like, South Pole, Fubu, and Baby Phat jeans because they are actually made for people who HAVE curves... (in my case thighs)
As far as is there things I shouldnt wear : NOW I MEAN ME PERSONALLY
... Id say
1. anything with a word printed across the whole butt of it...
2. wrap around ANYTHING!
3. anything Id see my BF grandaughter in (shes 9)
4. something Id see on someone twice my age...
35 IS STILL YOUNG... I DONT HAVE TO DRESS LIKE A GRANDMA OR A GREAT GRANDMA IF I AM NOT ONE :flowerforyou:

@ishallnotwant I think I love your grandmother and I hope you've inherited her spirit!0

I've been wearing hand-me-downs from my 21 year-old daughter for a couple of years now. After all, she does get her taste in clothing from me haha. So, skinny jeans, skirts or what-ever...if she says I look good in it...then I usually wear it. I guess I just refuse to succumb to my age :P0
-
I've seen What Not to Wear...and there ARE some things I wouldn't wear at my age (will be 45 on Friday) such as:
- Tight miniskirts
- Super tight skinny Jeans
- Shirts showing midriff
But there are other things that I will wear that perhaps most my age would not:
- Miss Me Jeans
- Sequined Uggs (I have the silver ones, they're awesome!)
- ANYTHING with sparkle or glitter
I never want to look like I'm trying to be 20 again (trust me, I am not) but on the other hand I feel awesome at this stage in my life and enjoy my 'younger' clothing items (and really don't give a good shiz what others think about that).
30 somethings and beyond, do you always follow the fashion "rules" for your age?
I haven't read all the reply's but your post intrigued me. I, too, am 45 and according to my Mother (May she rest in peace) I have never dressed appropriately. When I was younger I dressed too old, now that I'm older I dress too young....
On the other hand, I do not dress inappropriately. I am not in my 20's or 30's nor do I want to be! But I do have fun with my wardrobe and I do add some flash/pizzazz/style, if you may. I am me, and that reflects in my entire attire, from my hair down to my glittery pink toes. I have some tasteful leggings that I can rock with a longer top/sweater/vest and I wear plenty of just above the knee skirts that are fun and flirty and different. Some days I am all Hippie, others I have an "edge" and others still, well, I guess one would call normal.
I remember being in my late 20's and early 30's and looking at some of the Mothers of my Son's classmates and I thought to myself, I will never be that old. And here I am. I am NOT that old.
Dress how you feel, girlfriend and freakin ROCK those glitter boots! I know I would!0 -
I don't think that people necessarily have to dress their age, but should dress in things that flatter their figure. If you have to tuck, roll, and squeeze into something then more than likely you shouldn't be wearing it. I am 27 and still shop in the junior stuff. First off is because I am short 5 ft 1and second is I just don't like the clothes in the women's area they don't fit my style.0
-
I do think there comes a time when you have to realize you look like a fool in junior clothes and I don't think anyone looks good in sparkles unless your 5-12, that's just me. I am almost 56 and cannot find a pair of jeans that aren't Mom Jeans though. Snce I lost weight, I have to go to the junior section and then they are so low my Arss sticks out when I sit. That was fine in the 70's but I'm a Grammy now. :explode::grumble: :ohwell:
The Old Navy Sweetheart style is a classic rise, not high rise or super low rise, and has a bootcut option. I know some people don't like how Old Navy jeans fit, but I have a curvier bottom than top and I like how they fit. Plus they're inexpensive0 -
I have three daughters to keep me in line as to if i am dressing "too young." They are never at a loss for advice.
At 42 I share clothing with my teenagers often (I just tone down an item with something on the more conservative side) and I still feel good in skinny jeans and knee high skirts. However, there is a certain line you can cross into looking like a joke if you are not careful (In my case, one example would be Pink yoga pants) but most items can be wore if paired correctly with well ballanced item.
It's all about feeling good and confident0 -
Still in jeans, I pull them up, I'm an old guy. At 44 the biggest diff I see is that I don't like to go to work in a shirt without a collar any more. I'm into middle age, kind'a seniorish on the job. I'm an engineering tech. Shirts without collars just don't feel right in the shop/office any more. I want to look a little classier, or at least grown up.0

I dress my ageish.. meaning that I try to look presentable but I don't believe that I can't were something specific just because of my age.. does that make sense. I think if I find something that looks awesome on me and it makes me feel good when I wear it then I should be allowed to wear it. However, I do think there are certain things I will avoid because they might be inappropriate. For example if I stay away from the tight short mini skirt it's not because i'm too old it's because I think that no one should where a tight short mini skirt unless you are at home alone with that special someone doing some role playing. LOL. I also won't wear midriff but for the same reason. I think there is a point where we over sexualize ourselves. Don't get me wrong I LOVE dressing sexy and I think there is a place for it but I wouldn't choose it in everyday life. Now I'm just rambling so I'll say one more thing.
There is one place where it doesn't matter if you're dressed too sexy or if you aren't dressed your age and no one will really care.... Comic con! I can't wait to wear something like this.

I have a hard and fast rule. For every five years you are over 35 you need to add an inch to your wardrobe. In other words if it is a skirt add an inch past your knees and an inch to your cleavage. You can wear whatever style you like but no one wants to see grandma in a mini skirt.0

I'm 51 and I don't know what the fashion rules for my age are, so I probably don't follow them. But I live in a rural area and dress pretty casual most of the time. I don't really dress that differently than I ever have, except for work. And lounge pants. I love lounge pants, but we didn't have those back in the 70's.
What are "miss me jeans"?
LOL.. I just turned 32 yesterday and bought my first pair of miss me jeans today and LOVE them. I only shop juniors, because the rest looks old lady ish. When I was big I shopped in the bigger sizes, but now that I'm not, I'm enjoying being able to wear the fun stuff again. That said, I don't wear shirts that show my stomach, or pants that show my *kitten*.I don't wear super tight clothes, though I do like them form fitting and not baggy. I get more compliments now, than I ever did in my frumpy clothes. I used to wear everything baggy, feeling I was too fat for smaller. I had numerous people tell me I needed smaller sizes and now I have the confidence to wear them and not feel fat. I don't buy the stuff that is obviously teen looking and not appropriate for me. Right now I'm loving all the bohemian tops and the 60's & 70's inspired clothes.0 -
Hell no.
I'm 32. I'm "supposed" to stop wearing short skirts at 35. That only gives me 3 more years.
If you look at my pictures, that's all I wear! As long as I feel good about myself I will not be following any "rules".
Plus, rules are meant to be broken. Rebel!
Well said! I couldn't agree more.0 -

Not always true If grandma has the legs, then she should go for it.
And yes, I am a 50 year old Grandma of 6. I'll wear my short skirts as long as my legs will allow. And the 4 inch heels.

What makes those "miss me jeans" as opposed to regular jeans? Is the black part panties and the jeans have cut-outs?? Sorry to be so dense, I guess if you have to ask maybe you are too old. :ohwell:0 -
My mom is almost 55 and she doesn't give a damn what anyone thinks about her clothes. She's a punk at heart (loves Joan Jett) and wears clothes that make her comfortable and happy. She's basically a 55 year old punk and I think she is the coolest bc of it.0

Personally, I think it depends on your age and your size..........ie skinny jeans look fine on anyone teen - 45ish if they've got the figure to carry it off.......if someone is a plus plus size and wears skinny jeans, i dont care how confident they think they look in them, its a no no....!
Totally disagree! I should take a pic next time I am wearing skinny pants.
It all depends on your leg shape, the fit and what you pair it with.
Sorry, I don't agree........I won't express why because whenever I do express mysel on this site, I get bollocked by someone for having an opinion. !!0 -

I agree.........when you see women in their 50's wearing short skirts with their tits on show it just looks like mutton dressed as lamb!! Not a nice sight!!0 -
Never. I wear what I like and what looks good on me....without looking like a slutpuppy of course!0

I dress business conservative with color -- hot pink, royal blue, plum, bright red or lemon yellow suits -- double breasted or single, a suit jacket with an asymetrical cut or man tailored. I work in a conservative, predominately male industry; but aside from that, I would choose this style anyway. I look great. For weekends, I like boot cut chinos or jeans, and tees with cardigans or pullovers I have a pair of black and red cowboy boots that I love, and a dark fringe "cowboy" jacket (leftover from the 70's and too big but I can't part with it). I like flannel shirts and jeans, and "Deadhead" tees. We go to dressy kind of functions so I stick with the basic little black dress .0 -
FASHION AHHHHH my Favorite topic!
I will be 29 in May, and I wear what ever I feel that I want to wear.
You don't have to be a certain age to where certain clothes. You are your own self, Your own mind and own taste
Wear what makes you happy and feels good

I'm 39.
I'm usually found in jeans - mostly indigo or black, but there are a pale frayed, a beige and a green pair as well - and teamed with a vest top that covers everything or a fitted T shirt, sometimes with a plaid shirt over the top. I've got a battered old black leather jacket and wear Converse, trainers, Doc Martens, brown suede cowboys or black suede crepe soled boots. Most of my clothes are black, but there are also the odd khaki green, red, taupe or other 'non Barbie' colours in the wardrobe. I have trouble wearing some tops because I have quite well developed arm and shoulder muscles (bass players' arms, to be precise).
Occasionally I'm found in gym gear - but that's mostly just swapping the black jeans for black leggings or trackies instead.
If I absolutely had to wear a skirt, it would be a black linen calf length pencil skirt and that would go with a fitted shirt - my favourite is black with small polka dots on the sleeves and a lace up back detail. Plus black wedge or platform heels.
There's no point trying to change - I don't feel right in skirts and dresses, I don't look right in them, pastels make me look like I'm a candidate for Season 3 of The Living Dead - and, in all honesty, seeing as I've got a nose ring and a couple of ear piercings (and a well hidden tattoo), it's pretty obvious I would be wearing a costume, to all intents and purposes, if I changed. I'd have to totally rethink the makeup situation as well.
Having finally found myself, I don't want to give it up just because I've reached another arbitrary number on the calendar.0 -

I'm 40, I have short skirts and they look good, as do my short shorts. I think its more to do with dressing for your shape than your age. I have decent legs but a flabby belly so short skirts are cool but crop tops are not.0 -

I hope I look like that at 50!! You look great and it would be a crying shame to hide those fab legs because you're considered 'too old'0 -
There are a lot of things I think are cute but I won't wear because I know they would look ridiculous on me...however...I don't follow any "rules" either! If I like it and it makes me feel good and feel like I look decent...then I wear it! Life is too short to care what other people think about how I am dressed!
P.S. - one of my first "goal gifts" to myself, which is coming up soon, is getting my tips (hair) done in pink! (kinda like the chalking pics you see everywhere...but I am going for it with the permanent color instead of chalk!) I have questioned myself about it being age appropriate but finally decided ya only live once!
btw- I am 380
