Kind of confused about what this post is accomplishing... do you think the 'rude posters' are going to see it and stop being rude? Or do you think that you're going to rally a bunch of snarky people on the 'non-rude' side to start siding against the 'rude' people? Do you want to be smug about how not-rude you are by complaining about rude people and inciting more rudeness?
A great way not to let the rude people win is to stay on-topic and ignore them. Starting another topic like this is passive aggressive at best and accomplishes nothing.
Not to mention, when you poke and provoke and just take the bait of a rude person (or internet troll) then they know they have you and just lead you onto a painful and frustrating downward spiral.
However, I do think that there are tons of positive and well-meaning people in these forums. Lots of people with the same goal (to become healthy by either loosing weight, gaining muscle, or staying at a healthy weight)and when you have multiple people with the same goal, it's easier to become friends with them and lead eachother on. My friend's list is filled with people that congratulate me on logging in for 20 days straight and when I eat well. The fourms do the same thing if it calls for it.
Those that say something insulting or rude, just dont bother with them. They offer no kind of constructive critisism and so what can you take from what they say? Take from the internet what will help you on your fitness journey and leave what would hinder you.
So many of the 'rude' people I've seen on these forums are just trying to be helpful or correct misinformation. Maybe they're not very tactful, but I don't see that many honest-to-god trolls on this site, honestly.
Lately a lot of people have been posting along the lines of, "but do I really have to eat above 1200 calories?" and then others respond saying yes, you do... but they're not full of sweetness and rainbows when they say it. They get impatient. Which then others interpret as rudeness, and yet others scream at the top of their lungs about how the naysayers are just being unsupportive, and then someone posts about how rude everyone is and everyone piles on.
I don't see many real trolls. I see people complaining about rudeness and meanness when people don't agree with them. I don't know about the specific incidents the OP is talking about - in fact, I'd hope there aren't specific incidents, because it's against the rules of the forum to start a new thread to continue drama from elsewhere - but most of what I've seen is just people starting things like this when someone disagrees with them.
The person who tells you your diet could use an adjustment may just be trying to help, in their own slightly grating way.
WELL YOU KNOW WHAT--
Nah I'm just kidding lol, I see what youre saying.0 -
I was telling my wife the other night how MFP is so different than most of the forums I've frequented because of its supportiveness. Really. Someone posts a thread saying "I've lost 3 lbs and this is a huge accomplishment for me" and within minutes there are dozens of messages of support and congratulations. That's pretty nice.
There are a lot of very well-informed people here and there are a LOT of people here. I mean it always shocks me to see how quickly a thread goes from being newly posted to having 150 comments. I see an overwhelmingly welcoming community of people who are looking to help and support each other.
That said, it's a big place and not everyone's gonna get along. My humor is not going to fly with everyone. Someone else's humor might not amuse me. Someone might have had a rough day and takes it out on someone here for no good reason. it happens. And there are some people who are just s*****. They just are. That's life.
Personally, I prefer to look at the vast majority of people here who are good-hearted folks - and the sick, twisted, pervy freaks like me - and enjoy them as opposed to worrying over the others.
Plus, I'm ptretty sure this thread falls afoul of the guidelines and as such will be either lockd or deleted...which will occasion another thread demanding to know why this one was locked or deleted...0 -

I agree a lot of people are rude, but MFP has more friendly people than rude compared to many websites.0 -
Step four: Feel smug about being better than ambiguously defined 'rude people' and leading the crusade for manners in society
It's the damn Crusades all over again! Well, I for one won't bow to your God! Allah akbar!0 -
Apparently me calling this "Rude MFP posters..." was a cattle call. I was just stating that it's not necessary to be a jerk to people.... I have seen extrememly rude posts...not the posts where people are CONSTRUCTIVELY correcting others. I'm an adult and I don't think the world is full of unicorns or a "utopia" for that matter...
I'm going to take most of your advice and ignore any upcoming negative posts...

I don't know who or what incident(s) you're referring to, but you will find rude people on every forum sadly. People who are very brave and nasty when hiding behind their laptop.
I've actually found MFP to be a lot friendlier than some.....
This is true. It goes especially for forums that deal with sensitive subjects (in this case, weight or how to go about losing it 'properly' ) and where people need support. When support is an option, there are those that will abuse it and those that will abuse the ones needing it. When opinions and factoids clash on the subject, people get defensive and angry and it tends to drag out because not only do both sides not want to lose face, strangers army behind them. Then you just have the generally opinionated people (myself included) who sometimes inappropriately interject.
It's the way the internet is. We've taken away faces, the threat of actual physical repercussions for anything we might say, and voice inflection. So it becomes an impersonal abuse of the power of anonymity mixed with the fact that, no matter what we say and how we mean it, if someone reads your post when they're p*ssed off or just moody that's the tone they'll think you're taking with them. I know this because I've had so many people on other forums in touchy situations come after me because I stated something that wasn't sugar-coated, but not rude, and they acted like I was looking to put a boot up their butt.

Welcome to the internet, where apathy is the best coping skill you will ever learn.

It is real easy to be a jerk sitting behind a keyboard in your mothers basement.

Generally it's not rudeness. It's sarcasm, which doesn't translate well online. :flowerforyou:

actually no you asked "is it necessary" you didn't say it wasn't necessary...
you should be more clear.0 -
Yuppp, you have a bunch of people that just talk crap but as soon as someone say something about them...the world starts to deteriorate! ugh so childish here! But MOST of the people aren't like that. I've only come across a few!0

You have completely nailed it here. Sadly it will get lost in the shuffle, or go right over the heads of the very people you are talking about - the ones who ask for advice but really just want people to agree with them.0 -

I don't know if you guys noticed this, but I have noticed that men with pictures of themselves in front of the mirror with their gigantic bulging biceps are the meanest -- maybe we are dealing with 'roid rage here Yeah, I have noticed some rudeness from others as well: EMO types, probably those bitter of people's progress, those who can't share their negativity in anyone else's forums..... It's sad but true! We shall be positive and continue our MFP!
I'm rude. I'm female. My biceps are sadly flimsy. I've lost 53 lbs.
Next logic?

I particularly agree with part of mikeyrp's post about people wanting others to be like them.. Those people are all over the place. If someone expresses an opinion other than theirs, they can't stand it and will argue the point til the bitter end. Like there is only ONE way to accomplish something... THEIR WAY. They try to control everyone to their liking. WOW! Wouldn't that just keep you busy all day long?0

Thirding this. I'm a highly sarcastic person in real life so when I use it online I've learned to add a disclaimer. But then people get mad because I pointed it out, assuming I believe they're too stupid to figure it out. Truth is... they kinda are, but so is just about everyone else.0 -

Like the OP here, who posted a snarky, passive-aggressive message ("Is it really necessary..." isn't exactly the shining example of good manners and well intentions), got replies that didn't just agree with and validate her for her completely unhelpful post, and said WHATEVER, YOU'RE ALL RUDE. Ha ha.0 -
Can someone please help me find where in Emily Post, this is a polite or at least un-rude topic? Also please help me to understand how this thread is in any way constructive or capable of solving a problem.
i would note that sometimes the context is needed. Folks are new to MFP and don't realize that someone tends to derail strength training women threads with their comments that waif-y is much prettier, or bulky is their thing or ooooooh ick bleck. Or another person derails everyithing with their hatred of Crossfit, love of Tae Bo or other pet projects. This gets irritating and is responded to. If you dont' have the long history and context it may seem out-of-proportion.0 -

At least I'm consistently as rude on the internet as I am in real life. Continuity is key.0
