This is an article I came across while researching a Paleo Diet. I would normally add a link but I think it was more powerful to paste the entire article. So if someone asks can I lose weight and by only eating twinkles (yes this once was a post)? The answer is yes but at what cost?

In addition to throwing off the body's homeostasis, excess sugar may result in a number of other significant consequences.

    WOW!! I was looking at labels in the supermarket today, trying to purchase no sugar products, so was reading labels.. Almost everything has added sugar! Thanks for posting!

    But... how much sugar? It's listing any possible situation even if it's .1% chance, but it makes a good point. Still, even some of my veggies have sugar... not to mention the fruit!

    #100 is sooo true...I need a support group for my addiction...I just can't kick the habit...especially when I am stressed...I so need a 12 step program for this...

    Everything is bad for your health. Too much water could kill you. Too much exercise could kill you. Eating too much of <ANY FOOD EVER.> can cause health problems in some way.

    I think what you should say is too much sugar - "everything in moderation" and all that.

    For every article saying one thing there's another disproving it, I'll just stick to a nutritionally balanced diet thanks.

    as a scientist I object to some of those claims due to the caveats that need to said for them to be true
    but I agree that XS sugar, added sugar, artificial sweeteners and the prevalence of hidden sugars are BAD
    thanks for posting this and giving us so many reasons to eat healthier!

    Sugar, like anything, is better in small doses. Problem is, so much of what we consume these days is laced with the stuff. A product claiming to be 99% fat free can be loaded with sugar, at 20-30% sugar.

    It's the Fructose element of sugar that's the issue. Naturally occurring Fructose as would be found in fruit can be digested by our bodies because it's consumed with fibre. Fructose from Surcose (Sugar) can't be digested by our bodies... and it's basically turned into fat.

    I tried to find research supporting a number of assertions made in this article and couldn't. I doubt this is a peer reviewed paper - I'm going to file it under voodoo science.

    The list is dubious at best, as it states itself is a collection of possible ways sugar can affect people, gathered for medical journals and reports, but doesn't reference any of those.

    The above research by Princeton University focuses on High Fructose Corn Syrup.

    "The rats in the Princeton study became obese by drinking high-fructose corn syrup, but not by drinking sucrose. The critical differences in appetite, metabolism and gene expression that underlie this phenomenon are yet to be discovered, but may relate to the fact that excess fructose is being metabolized to produce fat, while glucose is largely being processed for energy or stored as a carbohydrate, called glycogen, in the liver and muscles."

    Did the article define exactly what "excess" sugar consumption is deemed to be? Without such guidance the practical applications of the OP are minimal. Personally, I think the stress induced by obsessing about food intake is harmful in itself.

    That's nothing new - read Sugar Blues by William Dufty and you'll have all the facts about sugar and how bad it is.
    I haven't been having any sugar, or just very little and very occasionally, since january 2008. It was not a choice, my body started refusing it, having very strong reactions (my whole skin soar, awful feeling) to it because I have an autoimmune condition and sugars are a strong inflammation trigger.
    After a while, if you stop all sugars, you'll find that certain fods are naturally sweet - I can hardly have boiled parnsnip or carrot now because I find them awfully sweet for my liking.
    Your taste buds change and discover what is sweet and learn to distinguish it from sugar.
    It's a very bad thing and living without sugar is possible (and just Fyi I do not use honey, sweeteners or anything and also had to cut off fruit because I can not stand fructose too much either - my sweet treat, on occasion, is just plain jogurt with smashed fruit I add to it or coocked apples with cinammon and nuts.
    Try to live without sugar for 2 weeks and you'll notice the difference.
