I am in a clinical trial of an experimental bariatric device. It is making it much easier to loose weight because I don't feel the need to emotional eat. Is it cheating? Who am I cheating? I look at it as a tool to make this last better. I medically need to lose weight and haven't been overly successful all of my adult life. Now I'm in a 5 year trial. So I'm determined to lose and stick with it. I still have to follow a strict eating plan and I still have to exercise. The difference is, that it's a bit easier now. Enhancement for sure. Plus I feel you only cheat if you compete. That's why I hate the term "cheat days". You are only cheating yourself. This is a journey and it had better become a lifestyle. So if there is a way to make it to goal and stay there, I say go for the enhancement.

I am taking this journey to become the best me, not only from a "look good" point of view but from a health point of view. I would consider it cheating if what you are choosing to do sacrifices your health to look good.... What is the point of looking good in the short term if it prevents you from living a full and healthy life in the long term...

but, in the end, the only person you are "cheating" is yourself... unless you are competing.
So would you consider breast implants "cheating" based on this reply?

    Ugh.
Enhancement is supposed to make one better.

With the same argument used by the OP, you could say that steroids is "just an enhancement".
C'mon. And if it's called an "enhancement drug".... hello? Drug? Can't be good.

I think that people are just cheating themselves in the long run.

How can you appreciate something you didn't really have to work for? To earn?

It seems to me there would have be set rules that were broken for any of those to be considered cheating. For example, if you joined a weight loss contest that specified weight loss through diet alone, and you added exercise then you'd be cheating. However, if you were execising when you joined and continued at the same level, I probably would not say that was cheating.

If a person was taking supplements to change physical attributes, then it wouldn't be cheating unless they'd agreed not to.

I don't really believe in competitive weight loss. For me the issue with enhancements like the OP described is that they are controlled substance and that particular OP was not using them in controlled conditions.

If the golfer was wearing glasses, that would be "Cheating" by your standards... You are not born with them.
So then Tiger Woods should be branded a cheater (lol, in golf of course).

Neither, both.. if a set rule is broken, its cheating. If it is in the case of casual use, it's not cheating.

That said, in a situation where an individual is using aides that almost guarantee success despite any skill, knowledge base, or handicap, I think it counts as a cheat.

Maybe a participation trophy is in order?

    I'm thinking Enhancement

Which makes me think that eating at calorie deficit alone wont do quite the trick of losing weight that I want- plus the muscles I wont will not come from eating less. DANG IT! I have to workout tonight! I swear I only get tired when I know I'm going to have to workout.. bahah

No cheating involved - unless of course the one is eating deficit and the other got a lap-band= cheating. :grumble:
I would think that "lipo" is cheating.

I wouldn't consider cosmetic surgery "cheating" since people who choose to do it are doing it to essentially "enhance" their appearance. Liposuction isn't intended for people who are trying to lose weight, although in some cases, that is what the person is attempting to achieve. Any reputable surgeon will tell you you're not a candidate if you're not already in good enough health. At least that's IMO.

  • It's only cheating if it's in a competition setting. I don't really care what people do with their bodies whether it's natural or not. Personally, I wouldn't take any performance enhancing drugs because I like knowing that what I see in the mirror was 100% of my own maximum effort. For that reason, I wouldn't get a cosmetic procedure like liposuction done.

Ok... I watched the "Bigger, Stronger, Faster" documentary - the glasses and laser correction took me right back to it. After watching that my whole view on the subject changed, I am now of the opinion that anything you do to better yourself and reach your goals as long as done in moderation and in an educated way it is an enhancement, NOT CHEATING

I can't get this out of my head now. One thing that keeps coming up is that if you cheated in competition wouldn't you always wonder if you could have done it by the rules? Maybe that's why steroids are abused, peeps might start to think they 'need' them to win or that they're not enough without them :ohwell:

Great post! Love some of the posts!!!

I got a lower body lift... That's considered an enhancement because I don't need it but it has been a mental enhancing experience because it has motivated me to stay on track. One could also say that a
Multivitamin is an enhancement... Eating more food is an enhancement to getting larger muscles.

I think within reason enhancements are needed to propel forward but that's just me. Many people say I cheated with the lift after losing 100 pounds but hey I lost the pounds with work and a few enhancing supplements.

I don't think anyone out there is doing things 100% natural even with natural supplements.

Steroids are a double-edged "enhancement" ... all of the examples you listed have no negative side effects. The golfer will benefit from Lasik in other areas of his life as well. The swimmer was smart enough to research and invest in a good swimsuit to suit his needs. The dieter knows that exercise is a fundamental part of weight loss, and hopefully inspired his dieting partner to participate as well.

Steroids have the potential to be extremely harmful when abused (i.e. not prescribed and administered under the watch of a professional), and can lead to heart attacks, cancer, and death, among many other symptoms...

I think this is the wrong way to look at it.
Key word here is abused. HRT for many older men has worked. Low testosterone is linked to heart disease. Like any other drug, abuse will cause issues, but like any other drug if taken with safety and care in mind, can be fine.

I recommend watching the doc Bigger, Faster, Stronger. It is all about steroids and enhancement, and weighs on wether it is cheating or not. As long as you are going by the rules, it is not cheating. Example: There are ways to increase the amount of oxygen in your blood, but only 2 are legal in sports. Tiger Woods had lasik surgery and now his vision is BETTER than perfect.

There are a ton of diets and methods to losing weight, as long as one does not get lipo or cosmetic surgery, I don't think their little game would be cheating if one did a deficit or not.
Great documentary. There are very legitimate experts on it too.

Didn't watch it, but I agree. Bottom line? Results. How you get there isn't something I'm going to judge. We all take different paths. Why does it matter if we arrive at the same place? Competition is different, yeah, but overall... who cares?

Somebody said something like "there's cheating & then there's self-cheating" & I will have to agree with that.

No problem with non-harmful substances but what if you're on a diet like HCG for example? If you're gonna do something that is not going to help you in the long term & you're just gonna loss weight on it & then put it back on & then some..... well then I feel like you have cheated yourself

! But that's my opinion... I wouldn't flip at you or anything for trying :)

Just taking enhancement drugs doesn't mean you don't work hard. I can tell you first hand that all the juiced bodybuilders I personally know BUST THEIR *kitten* in the gym day in and day out. So yeah they earned it.

In a swimming competition those could be considered 'flotation' devices.
so technically i wouldn't be cheating, i would be putting myself at a disadvantage.

If a child studies with flash cards and his peers do not and he scores better, then he enhanced his learning skills.

Ohhhh so I am not cheating on tests when I get the answers Beforehand!!! Its Enhancement!!! NICE! Got a new excuse if i get caught :P

Um, if you memorize the answers beforehand, isn't that the same thing as studying? lol

It's the method of studying that I was trying to convey. Of course flash cards have the answers, but the question is usually on the front.

Haha technically not. A good way to tell real ones from fake ones is to see if they float. Real boobs float, fake ones don't.
