"Face it, we'll never be that skinny again."

You can do it. Don't sweat what other people say. This is about you!0

That's what my best friend from high school said to me last night.
We have our 10 year high school reunion coming up in September and I told her how my goal was to be able to fit into my prom dress. My size 2/4 (I think it was maybe like a 3 in juniors) prom dress. I'm a size 10 right now (down from a 14). We were joking about how crazy we were for ever thinking we were fat back then, and how we wish we were that size again, when she said "Let's just face it, we'll never be that skinny again."
And I thought...well...maybe you won't...but I will. I guess it kinda rubbed me the wrong way, like she thought I couldn't do it or something. Or maybe it was just her resigning herself to being the size she is now after have 2 babies. Her body changed a lot (she was very skinny with no curves when we were 18, now she has hips and breasts), but mine didn't My body shape is still the same, I've always had hips and breasts, now they just have a LOT more fat on top of them. Sure, we were skinny back then, but neither of us were in shape...we were just teenagers with good metabolisms.
I'm sure she didn't mean it in a rude way, but it just kinda dragged me down, like well if my best friend of almost 14 years doesn't believe in me, then who does?? I have to think that if I work hard enough I CAN get down to a size 2 or 4 and fit into that prom dress, and this time I'll actually have some muscle definition and be in shape as opposed to just skinny! It just seems like size 4 is sooooo far away from me right now...I guess I kinda just wanted to post this as a vent/validation seeking post, so thanks for reading!
Does she know that you've been working on dropping the excess weight? I've made a point of not telling people what I've been doing here until they notice the change.
As you said, she didn't mean it in a rude way, and as others have said, this was more of an admission of defeat on HER part that SHE will never be that skinny again.
You're more than halfway to your goal, and have PLENTY of time to be able to get down to where you can take that prom dress picture and show it at your 10-year in September (assuming your ticker represents your HS weight). Keep up the great work!0 -
I don't understand how everyone can assume the best friend meant it out of spite or jealousy?
I also don't understand why everyone is assuming she is giving up. Maybe her goals are different than the OP, but is that really her being a quitter?
I don't want to weigh what I did in HS. Lowest was 98 lbs. Highest was 140. I'd look horrible at 140. Not everyone wants to be HS sized, or skinnier, and I don't think that it is a matter of not believing enough...0 -
u can do it!0

I know you can do it! Of course you won't be that skinny again...If you don't work for it!
When I was in high school, I was 'fat' and many people called me fat on a daily basis, but now that I am fatter, I realize I would love to be that size again. I was 160 pounds, and that is some people's ultimate goal. I still want to be lower than that, but it would be much easier if I was at that weight.0 -
That's a lie. And I'm thinner now than I was in HighSchool.. but I wasn't HUGE. But.. I have had 2 kids and I am skinnier now than when I met my husband over 6 years ago. I think it's possible!0

Well . . . I am a few years past the prom (26 to be exact), and I know for a fact that I can still fit in that dress, and a pair or two of stonewashed jeans (hey--it's my closet, don't judge).
I've had 6 pregnancies.0 -
Use it as motivation, You have already dropped 4 sizes, what is a few more.
Positive reinforcement is always better.
I had an older guy friend say, "I never doubted you could do it or any thing else you set your determined mind at"
(I think he meant pigheaded) but I want to prove him right.
I now pay more attention to giving positive re-inforcement to friends and family. Works wonders.0 -
Don't take it as a personal sleight on you. It's actually a justification on her part about herself, what she is saying is that it is ok for her to look like that, because anything else is impossible. She has to think this, because otherwise she would feel bad about herself. Its a very common thing.
It's far easier for people to believe something is impossible, or that someone else is just 'lucky', than to admit that they just can't be bothered to put in the time, effort and hard work to achieve what the other person has, whether that's a hot body, a nice car, a good job, or anything else that's worth having.

Yes, it can be done! I weighed 120 lbs. as a senior in high school, gained 53 lbs. over the next 22 years and now at 42, am back down to 120. I'm in better shape now -- as a teenager, I was a couch potato with fast metabolism. Even though I'm the same weight, my body looks different than it did back then -- I now have more muscular arms (I lift weights), a bigger waist (I guess that's just middle age), but smaller hips (go figure?). I, too, thought I would never be thin again.0
-
I have no doubt you can do it. I'd never been a size 4 in my life until now. I'm way smaller than I was in high school. I also felt like I moved through the size 10 pretty quickly as I lost. Even if you make it to a 6 instead of a 2 by this reunion, I'm sure you'll be one of the most fit people there0

I can assure you that what she said has zero to do with you and everything to do with her low self esteem. As of a month ago I told myself I would never be that skinny again (after 10 years and 3 kids.) It was a defense mechanism. If she tells herself that it's impossible to be that skinny again, then she doesn't have to try. Ya know what I mean? Don't let it get into your head. You're doing awesome.0

Project much? There's an awful lot of armchair psychology being applied to woman who isn't even here to discuss what she said...0 -
Forget the skinny, I want my hair back that I had then...
LMAO that's funny0 -
Yes you can be as skinny as you were in high school! I'm 42, I did it and so can you.
Me too! In fact...I'm thinner. More like the size I was in middle school. You can do what you set your mind and your will to do. I don't think your friend meant anything by the offhand remark so don't take it personally!

I'll never be as fat as I was in highschool again.... wait, thats different. But hey...could be worse right?0

A comment like that is what catapulted me on to my current weight loss journey. I didn't want to prove her right! The funny thing is, when she saw me after I had lost about 45 pounds, she didn't mention anything about my weight loss. I'm sure your friend didn't mean any harm though.0

My best friend of over 14 yrs who hasnt seen me for a few years deleted me on fb today after telling me I look scary. She deleted me after I told her I was insulted. It was pretty insulting since I usually eat over 1800 calories a day (sometimes in the 3xxx numbers). What am i suppose to do go back to eating over 4000 and feeling like crap? We use to be the same weight and Im currently 30lbs more then what we were where shes probably about 90. I could definately get lighter but I am completely comfortable where I am right now. Dont let people tell you what to do.0
-
I would guess it was more a statement about her than about you.0
-
Not true. All my high school clothes that I kept "just in case" I ever fit into them again, are all TOO BIG for me now.0
-
blahhh I can't stand highschool people ... besides the odd few lol
Most of the "popular" girls are  now and did nothing with their lives.
I was the chubby nerd in highschool and now I look my best.
Not sure where I'm going with this but...
I definitely don't mind running into people :drinker:0 -
Don't let her bring you down NOR think that you have failed if September comes and you're not automatically a 2/4 size. They're just random numbers. It's great to have a goal of fitting into your prom dress, but let's face it (this is what she should have said)... you'll never be an 18 year old skinny chick ever again, but you can damn well be a 28 or older woman that has a KILLER body that's toned in all the right places and look even better in that dress.
There. I fixed her statement with the truth. :flowerforyou:
^ This!!! :drinker:

Most of my adult life I was smaller than I was in highschool. You can SO do this. She can too, but maybe she is not mentally in the same place you are. I think you're either there or you're not. KWIM?0

I don't necessarily think it was her, I think that is what we are taught to believe. I never thought I could be thin again either. I was 227 when I came here and had a goal weight of 175 just because I thought that was the best I could do. After all I have had 4 pregnancies, breastfed 3 kids, I'm too busy to exercise, I will never be thin. Then I started seeing all these success stories on here and I'm thinking, if they can do it, I can too! So now my goal weight is 145 and I KNOW I will be thin and fit again. So, don't be too hard on your friend. Invite her to MVP and let her see what IS possible!0

Took the words right out of my mouth.0 -
I *feel* that way all the time! I'm only 25, but I've had 3 pregnancies and one of which was a twin pregnancy (they are 11 weeks) and I know that my body will never look the same again (even if its just the stretch marks) but I know I can be happy and proud of my body again! I might just have to sport some saggy skin and stretch marks.....but hey, they were made with love0
-
Shame on your friend. She should just speak for herself! If you have a goal to get into your prom dress, and you believe you can do it, then you will with hard work and determination. Personally, I just went shopping yesterday and found out I'm a size smaller than I've ever been. With the long holiday weekend, I may just have to pull out my wedding dress and try it on!0

I love when men respond. It's so less emotional than woman. This is very true, but it's hard for us to see past the way it was said. Good perspective.0
