At 15, I went to go see a gynecologist for a regular check up and to investigate a lump on my right breast. He then sent me to a specialist who examined me and told me and my mom, and I quote, "Oh that's nothing. I'm sure it'll go away on it's own. I'll bet everything I have in my bank account right now that it'll clear up on it's own. Don't worry about it."

Two second opinions later and 2 months past, I'm diagnosed with breast cancer and was scheduled for a lumpectomy.

I wish I would've held her up to that bet. I would've had a nice chunk of change in my savings right now.

I would've sued. Not even kidding. Cancer isn't something to *kitten* around with and say no big deal about. What an idiot, I'm sorry you had to deal with that especially at such a young age.

I had a trainer tell me that if I keep exercising as hard as I do, I won't lose any weight because I'll be "spinning my wheels" so to speak. Yes, because not working hard is how I lost 20 lbs. Right.

OH and another, my son was horsing around as I was laying on my bed and he flung his head back and broke my nose. It was fractured, I could feel it, but when we went to the ER all the nurses and doctors sat there giving my boyfriend dirty looks (he took me to the ER) and they wouldn't even take me back for x-rays for almost 2 hours (meanwhile, I was still bleeding from the nose THE ENTIRE TIME). Then the ER doctor barely glanced at the x-ray and said "it's fine, take 4 ibuprofen and it won't hurt anymore."

Fortunately I worked in a doctor's office at the time, and they were able to check me out and prescribe pain killers...thank God it was just a fracture and I didn't need surgery, although from a cosmetic standpoint I'd sure like to have it.

    I was told I had stage 5 cancer when I didn't.
Is there even such a thing as stage 5???????? I thought stage 4 was terminal.

There are different types of staging protocols - the most commonly known is stage IV which means it has spread to someplace far away (like breast cancer moving to the brain, vs stage III where breast cancer moves into a rib bone). Not all stage IV cancer is terminal - though it's not a great prognosis!!

As far as non-food/weight/fitness related advice, I have to say the worst advice I ever got was to take out student loans to finance my education. To anyone considering this as an option -- Your education does NOT ensure financial means to repay the loans!

My doctor's perspective on my being overweight:

"If you're hungry, eat a cucumber."

Meaning literally that is all I should eat.

I slipped and fell on a patch of ice and landed wrong on my arm ( I heard a crunching sound). I went into the ER and had x-rays done, the Dr. told me I was fine and that I could go back to my normal routine. My normal routine at that time was milking and feeding cows, when I had to feed the cows I had to carry 4- 5 gallon pails of feed at a time 2 in each hand. I did this for week or so, all the while dealing with the pain in my arm. A week later the Dr. called my house and told me NOT to move my arm as there was a bad break in my elbow and that if I moved it wrong I could lose the use of my arm. I ended up having to see a specialist which resulted in a cast from my shoulder to my hand. Moral of the story, if the Dr tells you one thing and your body tells you another it is OK to get a 2nd opinion!

I had a similar experience with my foot! An ancient Dr. at a clinic told me the break was nothing and I should have no problems walking...I couldn't put any weight on it so I went to see a different Dr. Turns out that guy was full of it and I needed a walking cast and to be on crutches for 8 weeks. Thank goodness I didn't try to walk on it or I could have really screwed it up!

That I needed to weigh 120 pounds, by a doctor. I was only 140 at the time (at 5'4, so not even overweight). I'm pretty sure my bare skeleton weighs 120.

My doctor, who weighs at least 100 pounds more than I do and not in a good way, told me that to lose weight, just stop eating donuts. Huh? I don't eat donuts. I wanted to ask him how he gained so much weight in two years, eating donuts???

My mom had gained about 30 pounds in a week and a half. Her doctor told her to stop snacking so much.

A few months later she went to the ER with respiratory problems. They said her fat was crushing her windpipe and gave her a tracheotomy.

One month later she died of a heart attack.

Thank goodness you don't have problems from yours. Mine is good most of the time, I do have stiffness in my elbow from time to time and it happened over 15 years ago. I should also add that I told the Dr. what my job was and what I did on daily basis, he still told me that I could AND should keep doing my job! His reasoning was that if I didn't keep using my that it would stiffen up and cause problems.

I was told by a fitness trainer at a nationally recognized gym that it doesn't matter what you eat, as long as you work out regularly. As a f'rinstance, he told me ate half a pie that morning for breakfast. Even if he had a flat stomach, his advice would have come across as poppycock.

when I was 17, a physician told me to lose weight by going as long as I could without eating, and only then to eat. He scolded me for being overweight, but neglected to consider I was hypothyroid despite a history of thyroiditis. It took 4 more years to start getting treated for hypothyroidism, and only then because I requested the test myself.

I had the same thought. There are 5 stages the highest being 4 (0, 1, 2, 3, 4) Zero is precancerous. I know this because I have been treated for Stage 0 and my mother died of Stage IV Breast Cancer that had metastasized to her liver after a ten year remission.

Either way, I'm glad your Dr. was WRONG!

1)Doctor told me I had an agressive cancer and needed immediate treatment. Next doctor determined it was a hernia. lol.

2)Cardiologist told me to eat Mc Donalds

I have these really terrible pains in my knees and very loud cracks for which I have tried so hard to get advice. Here's what I got:
1st doctor) Your knees are fine, they just need more exercise. Run more often. Maybe see a sports medicine doctor.
2nd doctor) Your cartalidge is destroyed in your knees. Avoid running and jumping. The more you work your legs, the sooner you will need knee replacements.
3rd doctor - sports medicine specialist) Looks like arthritis, see a specialist for arthritis.
4th doctor who is an arthritis specialist) No arthritis, it's just regular aches and pains. Take advil.

Note: My knees have cracked lots and loud, every single step I take up stairs. If I carry weight for a while, my knees feel like they are shattering and I am brought to tears. That being said, I have a super high pain tolerance so believe me - it's bad. They have been this way since at least 15 years old.

I don't remember a lot of stuff that's been said. The only thing that comes to mind at this point is when the podiatrist told me that I had an arthritic spur in my foot and since I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, there was nothing he could do "because you're gonna hurt anyways." His advice to me, "Try not to walk much."

I insisted on orthotics, and I got them.

Now, with good arthritis meds and my orthotics, I often manage 10,000 steps a day or more. Oh, and I don't own a car, so... I guess I should have been pretty much house-bound.

I now know that I have sleep apnea... which can cause fibromyalgia-like symptoms (fatigue, aching, brain-fog, memory problems). I am doing tons better with the CPAP treatments. I don't blame the doctors for taking so long for my diagnosis. I am grateful for the good docs I have, and glad to put the bad ones behind me.

After some pretty debilitating back issues, I went to a doctor who told me that my back was hyperflexible and that I should stop stretching completely and just work on building the muscles.

Two years later, after suffering a back-related incident that essentially paralyzed me for two days, I went to another doctor. His exact words: "Your back is heavily muscled...but it's like a rock. You need to stretch."

    :grumble:

(still working on finding a happy medium)

If my favorite show, "Mystery Diagnosis," has taught me anything, it's that we all have very rare diseases that only the most genius of doctors will be able to figure out after years of pain and suffering.

In all seriousness though, if you think you have a problem, keep looking for an answer.
