If my favorite show, "Mystery Diagnosis," has taught me anything, it's that we all have very rare diseases that only the most genius of doctors will be able to figure out after years of pain and suffering.
In all seriousness though, if you think you have a problem, keep looking for an answer.
Or build your pain tolerance even higher!0 -
"You need to stop running. Maybe you should try HCG injections instead, they worked great for my sister." - My (ex)primary care doctor.0

OH and another, my son was horsing around as I was laying on my bed and he flung his head back and broke my nose. It was fractured, I could feel it, but when we went to the ER all the nurses and doctors sat there giving my boyfriend dirty looks (he took me to the ER) and they wouldn't even take me back for x-rays for almost 2 hours (meanwhile, I was still bleeding from the nose THE ENTIRE TIME). Then the ER doctor barely glanced at the x-ray and said "it's fine, take 4 ibuprofen and it won't hurt anymore."
Fortunately I worked in a doctor's office at the time, and they were able to check me out and prescribe pain killers...thank God it was just a fracture and I didn't need surgery, although from a cosmetic standpoint I'd sure like to have it.
If I had to sit there for two hours without medical attention and in horrible pain, I would have stopped using tissues to soak up the blood and just start spewing everywhere. That would have gotten their attention to tend to you!0 -
Seriously, a doctor who doesn't know about soil depletion?0

i got told by a doctor that horse-riding wasn't exercise! idiot!0

"Don't worry baby, the police NEVER look behind this warehouse".
AWESOME!!0 -
My doctor walked out into the WAITING ROOM and said "congratulations, mommy!" when I had a false positive pregnancy test.
I do not want children, EVER.
She knew this.
I was mortified for a week until the blood tests confirmed that I was not, in fact, pregnant.0 -
When I had the flu, an urgent care Dr. wrote me Tussionex (controlled substance) for cough when I clearly told him I had no cough or sore throat. Maybe he thought I was a junkie looking for a quick fix?
He was clearly being influenced by drug reps0 -
I am 6' tall.
My doctor told me to
1) eat 1200 cals a day or less to lose weight
2) do ONLY cardio like running or biking (despite her giving me a series of knee injections for horrible chondromalacia)
3) to not strength train anymore
4) to take phentermine
5) to take an antidepressant that is the #1 CONTRAINDICATED antidepressant for bipolar disorder, which I have (her response: "well, I guess that's why I'm not a psychiatrist!")
She got fired.0 -
In the 80's and 90's...eat less calories, eat less fat (this is a huge contributor to my metoblic issues).
A naturopath put me on the Eat Right For your Blood Type Diet, mine was mostly vegetarian, tuna and soy. The soy made my thyroid go from good/normal and I was the thinnest I've been in years to OFF THE CHARTS. Soy for thyroid= very very bad.
"Oh your thyroid is fine, you're tired because you have a baby"....years later and 85 lbs, yes it was my thyroid.
Or even better while I was in labor "Go home, come back later, you need to hurt more". I went home and had my daughter at home, great doc that was!0 -
A dietitian told me I can eat 500g cheddar cheese a day!
That's 2015 calories!!!0 -
My mom had gained about 30 pounds in a week and a half. Her doctor told her to stop snacking so much.
A few months later she went to the ER with respiratory problems. They said her fat was crushing her windpipe and gave her a tracheotomy.
One month later she died of a heart attack.
I'm so sorry for your loss. That is a terribly sad story.0 -
Went into emergency after playing volleyball and going down with a loud pop. Had Dr in emergency tell me after manipulating my leg (quite painfully) that I had dislocated my knee cap and it went back in place so there was nothing to worry about. When I asked about pain I was in and if there was anything he could give me for it even so I could sleep that night, he quickly told me ibuprofin and wanted to discharge me with no xrays or anything. Thankfully managed to talk him into a referral to a sports med dr. Turned out I had completely torn my ACL and had severe bone bruising. Oops.0

I swear that these doctors partied too hard in their days n never paid attention in class, therefore giving very bad advice when they become doctors. I do things my way and what works for me.0

From an electrician......you can cut that wire, it's not live. ZAP!!!
That's why My father an electrician said:" never touch a wire unless you test it first yourself!0 -
When my then 8yo daughter was diagnosed with Type-1 we were told by a Nutritionist / Diabetic Educator to only eat things that have a nutrition label so we could figure out the carbs.0

I had a blood test (not fasting) in November. It was high (in the 200s). I had another blood test (also not fasting) in February to check where I was at. When I called to get my results, the doctor proceeded to tell me that it was still in the 200s. I then freaked out because I kept thinking that "I have lost 30 pounds eating decently well and STILL have high cholesterol? What is wrong?"
After talking to her multiple times on the phone to get my information, I found out that she was an idiot and had given me my numbers for November again - my real numbers were in the normal ranges. Thanks doc for making me upset for a week, and then not apologizing for giving me incorrect information!0 -
My dog got really sick (vomiting, not eating, losing weight, being lethargic) out of the blue one day. Naturally I was super worried so I took him to a really well known/popular vet hospital. After running multiple tests they said he had Addison's Disease or Immunodeficiency Bowel Disease (both of which are slightly serious lifelong conditions) but they had to do an ultrasound/biopsy to be sure. Thousands of dollars and a second opinion later it turns out it was just a parasite which was a fairly simple (and much cheaper) fix. UGH. SO ANNOYED.0

LOL agreed. When it comes to the endocrine system, or thyroid I think they have 1 day or something really awful on that that's why a lot of docs cannot catch or even understand thyroid and the HUGE role it plays in our bodies yet, even know how to treat it.
I've come across some horrible docs in my time, horrible beside manners, horrible advice, cannot diagnose a flea if they tried. Some just don't put the effort in. My gosh, they don't know people, they see them for 5 minutes in a room every few months if they are lucky and get 150$ for those 5 minutes.0 -

how annoying!0 -
I had a doctor tell me that I should way 120lbs. I am 5'10 with a large bone structure. I told her that would put me in the underweight BMI for my height and she just looked at me and said, "But you'd look great." I immediately changed doctors.
I had a nutritionist put me on a 1200 calorie a day diet. I weighed 355 at the time. After six weeks, I went to my doctor and she told me that I was so sick because I was anemic and starving my body.0 -
I had very severe problems with my last pregnancy, it was not normal in anyway. I went to a visit with my doc one day because I was in a lot of pain, so much so that if you even touched my stomach I would scream. My doctors response was that the reason I was having these pains was because at 24 I had a "old uterus"!0

I saw an idiot trainer a couple of weeks ago, who told me the routine I had made up for myself which included cardio & weights was counterproductive (you know, the same routine I've managed to loose my 10 pounds and however many inches on, and build the muscle that I've now got), and that I wouldn't be able to loose more than 10 pounds a month (yes, a month - which I NEVER indicated I wanted to do) without his help.
Best part? He had no clue what BMR was. He says "BMI? Oh yeah. Your BMI is high".
*facepalm*0 -
12 Years ago I took a hard fall on a ship riding the edge of a hurricane (thank you Navy). Slammed both knees onto a sharp edged scuttle. I was told for 12 years it's just tendonitis go take Motrin. FInally 2 years ago I ran and my right new blew up so big it was 3 times its normal size. Went to a sports clinic, oh you have moderate osteotarthritis in both knees with a condition where a gland in the knee capsule produces additional calcium deposits. You will kneed full knee replacement surgery in about 15 years. I am 32 years old, with a high threshold for pain. I was taking 1600 mg of Motrin. They have now switched me to Mobic. Still monitoring my knees.
Weight loss advice. I was told to cut out all Carbs. After the first workout, almost passing out, I went home and had a peanut butter sandwich and felt way better.0 -

My mother delivered me 30 minutes after she got to the hospital. 5 years later she went to the hospital in labor with my brother. They *tried* to send her home even after she told them she had a history of quick labors. Dr confirmed that she needed to stay. Nurse checked her dilation and turned to chart, my mother grunted and asked the nurse to check again. Nurse says ( without turning around) I just checked you honey...then turns around and my brother was delivered to the shoulder and looking at her0 -
Back in the dark ages when I was a teenager and looking to lose weight my family Dr. gave me diet pills. They didn't help me lose weight, but .... Whhhhheeeeee!!!!0
-
In February I was told by my doctor that there was no way I was going to lose weight they way I was (which is pretty much what I am doing now STILL) At the time I had lost 16lbs...I think what I am doing is working...
He wanted me to work out 90 minutes a day EVERY DAY
Two days of straight cardio
And just for S and G's I suppose try and fit in a vacation for JUST myself atleast TWO times a year because I am a tired overworked mom (Um...Thanks?)...This household has one income (my husband) and three boys to take care of and his suggestion was so place warm (I live in Iowa) like Florida...Not going back to him....0 -
My OB's nurse told me to to start the Atkins diet (during my pregnancy) when I was half way through my pregnancy.0
