    This should be required reading for anyone who has enjoyed BDSM fiction/fantasized about it/toyed with the idea of going out and experiencing it for real. And sums up very nicely why I never have.

    The ONLY reason to read this book is for the sex, and even then it's kind of a let down. The main character is so naive, inexperienced and flat-out boring that it just falls short of the excitement it's supposed to convey. Honestly, the Twilight series was better written and that's saying A LOT! I liked Twilight, not loved it, but I liked it. Everyone said how awful the writing was, so I had low expectations and it was better than I thought it would be. But 50 Shades? By the second or third book I just wanted to punch that girl every time I read "Holy crap!" "Oh my poor fifty!" or "inner goddess." Even Bella wasn't this sheltered and she's a teenager. This girl is supposed to be graduating college. How do you make it through college without losing your virginity (ok, maybe possible), hearing anything at all about sex (guess it could depend on your friends) or having the first clue that some guys like it kinky (You've never even read an issue of Cosmo?) The only reason I kept reading is for the sex and because I really can't stand not to finish what I start.

    I don't guess my SIL has ever read an issue of Cosmo either. She "loves" the books and was trying to convince me to read them... Then she starts with..

    "but.. he's like into weird bedroom stuff, things I had never really thought anyone did... like a whole room dedicated to it..."

    "Oh, like BDSM?"i asked. "What's that??" was her reply.

    I guess a lot of the women who enjoy it are like this.. maybe they just weren't aware there was anything other than vanilla out there... hard to believe there are women that sheltered, though.

    It started out as a Twilight fanfiction called Master of the Universe. She changed the names, took out the paranormal elements and added in BDSM-lite.

    I only read the first book to see what all of the hype was about. I went into it expecting to hate it. It wasn't as bad as I expected, but not good either. The writing is terrible and very amateurish. Things get to be very repetitive which is very annoying. It is told in the first person from the heroine's perspective which I found to be grating. Oddly though it is a quick read and a page turner. I don't know if it was the train wreck aspect or what.

    Yes there is sex in it and a lot of it. Some will find it provocative. For me it sounded like she just looked up BDSM on the internet and took the first few articles from Google and that was it. I regularly read romances and wouldn't classify this as a romance book. I didn't read past the first book though so I don't know if that changes in the 2nd or 3rd book.

    Anything HAS to be better written than 50 Shades. Seriously. And you aren't kidding about the same phrases over and over again..."Oh my poor fifty" and I was REALLY tired of hearing about what her "inner goddess" was doing by the end of the first book. I mean seriously...who has an inner goddess that glares and does back flips? LoL

    I completely agree with this. Again, I loved the steamy scenes and the email exchanges.

    But:

    Oh My.
    Laters, Baby.
    Inner Goddess.
    REPEAT!!

    You forgot "holy"
    as in
    holy hell
    holy f@ck

    holy I've had enough!

    And "there". In italics. As in "I felt it 'there'." Because apparently, it's really sexy to refer to one's genitalia in the same fashion a 3-year-old might.

    The author is from London I believe which may explain her referring to it as her "sex"? Maybe that's what they call it there...

    Nah... I have read many a Harlequins where the author as the female (and even the male) refer to their genitals as "their sex"... it's not an uncommon thing.... just not all the flipping time.

    1. You like Twilight
    2. You don't know what BDSM is
    3. It's a horribly written book
    4. Magic Mike is almost out
    5. You like Twilight

    As in - Interview with the Vampire, Queen of the Damned.
    Yes, much better writing. Much better everything.

    I know who Anne Rice is, I have read a few of her novels... but I hadn't heard about this series (I usually just browse the library for something to read... I hardly pay attention to book news) until now, so I didn't realize it was an Anne Rice book until someone else said it... But to be honest, I can read erotica for free.... And it's usually dirtier and decently written... at least compared to what I hear about 50 Shades.

    I like Audio Books, and I recently tried to listen to it. I thought it was thrash, don't get me wrong, I like erotica, but it just felt super cheap. I did hear that it started as Twilight Fan Fiction, and that might have jaded me. But the main character just seemed to annoye me. I did enjoy Twilight, but this was just soo cheesy and you could tell it was so based on Edward.

    I do recommend Hunger Games Trilogy, Divergent Trilogy, and the Stackhouse books. They are all engulfing!!! :wink:

    The sleeping beauty trilogy is fantastic. Anne Rice is a genuis!! It's a billion times better written, I heard Exit to Eden was great too, but I have never got a chance to read it.

    I asked a colleague what she was reading on her kindle during lunch and she said Shades of Grey as her WHOLE face turned beet red! I had no idea what the book was and asked, she said, "Porn" then laughed. She did say its an excellent book, its just very graphic due to the situation of the main character. Its on my list.

    I am reading it now and it is pretty good. Interesting. But not amazingly hot.

    My god, has no one heard of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, Immortals After Dark, Demonica? You know, books that are actually worth reading? And yes, I've read 50 Shades. Its a poorly written book about a girl with too many split personalities and a billionaire with a sex fetish. Next please.

    @ Scandalist - I have read 50 Shades of Gray series and Black Dagger Brotherhood series and I agree Black Dagger is better written.

    Appropriate for non-prudish adults: yes, appropriate for teens: no.

    The books are ok, not great but not bad. If' you're read the first Twilight, take out the vampire/werewolf stuff and add in BDSM and you basically have the story. IMO, there are many books that are much better out there but 50 Shades is certainly the fad right now.
