Great information, thanks for sharing!
I guess one can also assume this water retention will happen not only at the beginning of a new program, but throughout different phases of the program. And it may also explain why some people experience a temporary "plateau" or halt in weight loss during any one program.
So the main message is to stay focused and keep working out, and results will come!0 -
so if i've just been losing weight, am i doing it wrong?0

Glad to read an explanation & not just assume it's a myth.0

Thank you so so much for this! I started a new workout and nutrition programme a couple of weeks ago and was confused as to why my weight was going up. I feel so much better now. I'll definitely stick to it to see the positive results!0

Thank you so much for posting this informaiton. I started training for my first 5K several weeks ago. When I saw the scale going up instead of down I actually removed the scale from my bathroom and put it under my bed. I just couldn't understand how it was that I was sticking to my calories, running like mad women and I was gaining weight. This explains it. I gues I can pull my scale out from underneath the bed and put it back in the bathroom now.0

Its been about 2-3 weeks now that I've started more intense strength training and I feel like I've grown bigger instead of smaller. Even though I know about what's in the article, it depresses the hell out of me. I'm bone tired everyday and seeing opposite results. I'm really hoping the weight loss kicks in soon!0

my body has been consistently sore from exercising... maybe that's why the pounds haven't come off in a few weeks. I only lost 1 pound in the past 3 weeks but have been exercising 5X a week including 2-3X resistance training.0

Thanks...this makes sense and could explain my recent plateau...moving more than ever...not necessarily racing, etc., but moving a lot more...and the scale needle is NOT MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. My MFP's will not let me quit. And, I AM eating back the calories spent most days. Will look for some scale victories again soon!!!0

Never made the connection with weight gain. Good to know (and good to know to delay weighing in for awhile). Thank you for posting!0

That is really good to know. I just started last week and one day a go I lost 1 pound and I was very happy. Today I just wanted to see that low number again and I gained 2 pounds back. what a surprises. I have been working hard. Swimming, upper and low strengthening , running, dancing set ups. I was really hoping for more. so i don't know, do I put in my lower weight or what I weigh now in for my weigh in. and it always seem like when I weigh myself first thing in the morning I'm heaver then later in the day, Should I just weigh myself in the morning and just have something to go by.0
