Science and Running Don't Always Mix
Runners love numbers, but we can't measure heart, grit, or passion. By Lauren Fleshman; Image by Kirsten Ulve Published August 16, 2013 My junior year of high school, a top-20 two-mile time in the U.S. earned me an invitation to an all-expenses-paid camp at the Olympic Training Center in San Diego. It was a huge honor, and…

Youtube videos on good running form
I recognise some runners already, their running form in particular, and they all have very different styles. I doubt flapping one's arms like wings is great, though, so yesterday I found some videos on Youtube that I want to ask whether that's how it's done. How To Run: DOs & DON'Ts, THNKR:…

Need help with motivation
I've worked up to and completed week 6 day 1 then I just stopped. I don't know what happened, I didn't plan it, I just lost motivation and got lazy. How do you get over your motivational problems?

Question about hills
Depending on which route I take, I can either have long rolling hills or short but steep hills with intermittent flat sections inbetween. My question is, what's the best way to approach them, especially the steep ones? Should I be going for a constant pace to the top or should I back off the pace so I'm not tiring myself…

Running pals?
I just completed W3D2 and realized I didn't have anyone to share it with. I'm pretty proud of myself, as I've never been dedicated to running in any way before. Anyone interested in sharing accomplishments? If so, add away! :) Happy running!!

2nd 5K Today
I did my second 5K since completing C25K today. It was a huge race, nearly 4000 runners. The route was also very hilly. I ran the entire thing. It was still a challenge, but felt easier than my first one in June. My time was 34:55. Which is good, but I'm a little disappointed since it is only a 42 sec improvement. I know I…

Do you run during cool down or do you just walk or stretch?
Do you run during cool down? I hate to waste time and spend the last five minutes just walking. So, I run at least one more interval. What about you?

Egads! I think I've been doing it wrong! Should I restart?
First off I'm new to the group, so... Hiyas! Nice to finally have a group dedicated to one of the programs that I'm itchin' to complete. Before I begin, here are ze stats: CW: 174? (I'm doing a 'no scale' challenge for my sanity so I couldn't tell you how much I weigh at the moment) C25kStat: W2,D1 completed today. I do…

Returning to intervals in week 6 (but, but, I don't wanna!)
I started my run tonight with every intention of doing week 6 day 1, but after the first 5 minute jog I did not want to slow down. I couldn't stop thinking about how awesome week 5 day 3 felt, and how pround and happy I felt all day after I finished it. So I kept going for 22 minutes. Soooo: before I do myself some kind of…

Why do some stats show "timed"?
I don't know if I changed a setting or what, but for W1D2-W1D3, they have "(timed)" next to "C25K Week X Day X". I don't see it for the other levels, though. Is that only shown for certain levels?

signed up for a 5K
I graduated from the program a few weeks ago, I've been running 30 mins a few times a week, hitting only 2 miles. Last week I finally went for 3.1. Took me 46:15. Did it again a few days ago, a few seconds faster. Yesterday at the gym in my subdivision, there was a sign for a C25K clinic and a 5K race on Sept 21st. I was…

How to resume after a week+ off
So, I made through Week 3, Day 2 and then I got hit with the Kidney Stone of Doom and have been laid up for a week now. Assuming I am done with this thing soon, how do I resume? Should I pick up where I left off (seems dubious) or maybe roll back to the start of Week 3 or even back into week 2? Not sure if there is a…

The people on MFP want me to do it!
Hi everybody! I havent been able to do my C25K as often as I'd like but I still try and fit it in on days I'm not doing other stuff. I did my w6d3 today after about a week and a half off. Don't worry I was doing other stuff that kept me active and burning calories, but a 25 min run without stopping seemed a little scary.…

Race Etiquette
Just finished W8D1 and am running my first race 5/27. Wanted any advice about running a race. Is it OK to wear my phone (where my music and running app are)? Other advice about rest and food would also be appreciated. I can't "carb up" because I had RNY surgery 6 months ago and I don't digest carbs very well. Thanks in…

It feels like learning to ride a bike
I just realized the feeling that I have when I can run for longer periods of time. I imagine that it's the same feeling that people get when they learn how to ride a bike, when their parents let go and they're pedaling on their own. I can't remember how I felt when I learned how to ride a bike as a kid. But, I imagine that…

Third time lucky :-)
Hi everyone! I have just joined the group and there is a fantastic amount of information on here that is going to prove to be very helpful. As the title says, this is my third attempt at completing C25K - last 2 times I was so unfit I didn't make it past week 1, but think I also did too much too soon as I have just reading…

Get Up and Run? Or Stay In Bed?
Found this one for you Vardaeml, because I know how much of a Mark fan you are! Get Up and Run? Or Stay in Bed? When my alarm chirped at 6 a.m., I rose. In a parallel universe, I sank. By Mark Remy Published August 19, 2013 The alarm on my iPhone sounds like crickets. For a moment, I heard them in the dream I was having.…

C25K and HRM
Is anyone using a HRM and C25K with the same stats (weight, height, age, gender, etc)? Are the workout results (cals) pretty close together? Which shows the higher number of calories? Which do you think is more accurate? Thanks.

How slow is too slow?
I know that we're supposed to pace ourselves, but how slow is too slow? If during the "run" segments, you're going slower than you were walking, is that bad? :\

New to this group!
Hi fellow runners, Just thought I'd introduce myself. My name is Emily and I just finished Week 2 Day 1 of C25k. So excited to have found this program and this group! I run on the treadmill for now, but when I go back to school where there is sidewalks I will be running outside. Anyone have any tips for making that…

W5D1 began an epic struggle. . .
I don't know what is wrong with me. I was going along quite nicely until I hit W5D1. I stayed on W5D2 for about a weeks worth of workouts before finally trying W5D3. I had to stop twice--about a minute each. I was so disappointed. I've moved on, but every day is a struggle now and I'm finding myself needing to stop during…

Starting today
I am starting the program today with a co worker (hopefully she won't flake), our work has an annual 5k in October and this year we have decided to do it.....I apparently don't know much about running so any pointers/advice would be helpful I have the run double app that I will be using I looked it over some last night but…

Arm band for iPod and iPhone
My milestone is approaching and I've decided to buy an arm band as a reward. I have no reason to think my iPod will die anytime soon, but sometimes it might be handy to bring the phone along, so I'm looking for one that could fit both (not simultaneously of course). The iPod is a nano of 2nd generation so size-wise in the…

Running with an inhaler
Hi all, I started jogging this past week. My goal is to train to do a 5k without using my asthma inhaler. I do not have asthma. I have upper airway restriction issues due to sinuses, etc. Does anyone use an inhaler? If so, where do you store it when you run? I have been using an old fanny pack but not sure if it is safe…

First 5K run complete!
I finished c25K sometime in July and ran my first official 5K race yesterday. I was slightly longer at 3.28 miles and I timed in at 28 minutes flat. It felt amazing. I finished 4th for the ladies in my age group. It sure would have been awesome to place but that was definitely a personal best and my first race ever so I am…

Wannabe/Faux Runner - Tips and Encouragement Appreciated!
Hello all, I've been tentatively starting to run for about a year. That sounds odd, but let me explain. I believe I have a solid base of walking (averaging 3-5 miles at least 5 days per week). I've started the C25K program a number of times in the past, but never got beyond week one. I always felt defeated that the first…
