I'm primarily a runner. When I've had to stop cold turkey for injury or illness for weeks or months, I usually find it *psychologically* easier to start up again with the elliptical rather than running. It lets me rebuild some of my cardio fitness so I don't feel like I am starting so completely from nothing. That said,…

I run too much, get injured a lot, and have a very cute dog. And I'd love more running friends, so posters and lurkers in this thread, drop me a friend request!

Under Armour Pure Stretch Thong. I've tried other options, but this does best for me for preventing panty lines and camel toe. I've tried the Cheeky that @_dracarys_ mentioned, because I don't usually like thongs, but...well, suffice to say it very quickly turned into a thong, too. However, the actual thong version is…

I'm sorry about the kidney infection and that you are emotionally struggling. I think you figured out from typing this post that you have a lot going on that you need to address. You *know* you should be resting. You *know* two hours of walking is not resting, even if it's less than you'd usually be doing. Have you thought…

Yes. The best way to run faster is to run *more*, slower.

I panted so hard during the last 3 miles of my most recent marathon--and then it took about 20 minutes of still panting that hard before my lungs calmed down--that, yes, my lungs/throat were sore the rest of the day. It hurt to breathe deep, cough, laugh hard, and cry. I was fine when I woke up the next morning, though.

It hurts when you push on a particular spot? Is it always the same spot? Is it small and over one of the metatarsals? Is it pretty consistent? That could be a stress fracture or its precursor, a stress reaction. Extensor tendinitis is also pain on the top of the foot, but for me it shifts around *where* on my foot it…

I will just say that when it's really cold, it can feel hard to breathe at the beginning. Push through the initial discomfort--think of it as warming up your lungs, like you have to warm up your legs. Experiment with different ways of adding clothing--there is no "one formula fits all" here. Some people toss on a hat and…

I want a Tracer360 SO HARDCORE. I asked for one for my birthday last year, but they were out of stock. As it is, I wear a top or jacket in a high-vis color (the jackets have reflective tape, too--Brooks Nightlife and Brooks LSD Nightlife), clip a reflector/blinking LED to the front and back hem, sometimes wear a headlamp…

I ran the polar opposite of Chicago this weekend! (This was the only real flat stretch--for a race with very little *numerical* elevation change, the whole thing was baby rollers.) I (well aware that this was not a good idea) went out too fast and of course started dancing with the wall around mile 21, but more or less…

Target (Champion/C9 line); Meijer; Kohl's online (Fila especially); Wal-Mart's Danskin stuff isn't even terrible. You can probably get some good deals on last season's gear at Moosejaw and Backcountry online, but this is the nicer stuff, so "good deal" on running tights still puts you in the $50 range. That said, I'd say…

You want to be a little cold at the beginning of your run, because you will warm up. Staying warm overall is a game of NOT SWEATING (wet=>cold). I find that running tights with a windblocking neoprene panel in the front of the thighs to cut the wind are the best option for Upper Midwest/Plains winters. I also sometimes…

Yes, I think that about myself every day I run. :)

I swear by the Under Armour Pure Stretch Thong. I've always been anti-thong, but these are surprisingly comfortable even for running. I've *never* had a problem with chafing, since the edges are laser-cut instead of hemmed or seamed. And best of all, the extra fabric in the gusset helps ward off camel toe. Cue at least one…

You can control cadence (how fast you pedal) and resistance (how hard the bike makes you work to pedal), which makes it harder or easier. A spin class instructor will also generally call in times to stand or sit--it is easier to pedal on a higher resistance when you are standing, so less strength work on your legs, but…

Heel-elevated hip thrusts. Best thing I know to isolate the hamstrings (with some glutes in the mix) without a dedicated glute-ham machine. Well, also Russian hamstring curls, but you have to have some hamstring strength already to do those, and I'm not there yet.

Yeah, especially with the 'dead legs,' it sounds like you just need to take a break. Switching up exercise is a good idea *if* the new stuff sounds appealing, which you seem to be enthusiastic about it. Otherwise, nothing wrong with a short fitness vacation!

Sure, it's totally normal to have a higher heart rate in the evening on days you work out. Tons of other factors can affect how you're doing on any one day: incubating a background virus or bacterium, dehydration, temperature, etc. Sounds like you've earned yourself a rest day, though! Great job in the pool! Actual,…

You have 100% not gained six pounds of muscle in two weeks of primarily cardio videos with some light weights. A woman lifting heavy with *perfect* training and *perfect* low surplus diet *might* gain a pound of muscle per month. More likely, your muscles are retaining glycogen (and with it, water) between your workouts.…

Really? 'Cause this study is on the first page of the Google results: Ristow et al. 2013 - "Application of KT after surgery for mandibular fracture had a statistically significant influence on tissue reaction and swelling, decreasing the incidence of swelling and turgidity by more than 60% during the first 2 days after…

Yes, the Pro-Tec compression strap works very well to take the edge off the pain initially. But it doesn't cure the problem. And things will continue to get worse unless you take steps to fix it: rest and rehab.

I think what your doctor told you is a great place to start. I do agree that the exercise bike at the gym is pretty brutal. Have you asked about either a spin class (which is a lot more fun IMHO), or--what about riding outside? Road cycling is SO FAR AWAY and superior to the gym bike, it's almost unbelievable. It's hard to…

Congratulations! Yay Cannondale--that is a solid, solid bike you have.

Congratulations! I think you're fine working yourself up from a 5K to a 10K. Well, actually I think that if you just went out and ran 5K with enthusiasm to spare at the end, you are likely *physically* capable of running 10K. (Although it would probably really, really suck at the end). It's mostly for the marathon+ and…

Yes, I think the Flipbelt is one of the few out there that will hold a chunky phone and an inhaler. I love my Amphipod Microstretch and a lot of people swear by the Spibelt (I like that one, too; I have one with elastic gel holders for long races), but the pocket is only big enough to hold my iPhone 5 in its Lifeproof case…

12C/54F - yeah, skip the rain jacket; you'll just get sweaty and wet from the inside out instead. That's pretty borderline as to whether I would wear a running jacket that will get wet or just a T-shirt. (Probably I would do it in the fall, when I'm used to summer heat, but not in the spring). One thing, though--I would…

Yeah, but we want to look good for ourselves, not for other people. o:)

Fellrnr is an *amazing* site, but his GPS watch reviews come from a *very* narrow and high-end-use standpoint. (His idea of a good running watch for the average weekend warrior: Polar V800 and Garmin Forerunner 920xt. What?) DC Rainmaker gives, IMHO, better reviews within the target audience of each level of watch. OP, I…

*I* care about having panty lines, and that is enough for me! My two options are: 1. Loose shorts (I like Nike Tempo and they last *forever*, but there are cheaper options) 2. Compression shorts with the Under Armour Pure Stretch Thong (US link for the picture, sorry). I'm anti-thong in general, but this works for me. It's…

Have you ever run a marathon before? Training for the London Marathon is training for a marathon. Have you considered whether you want to take your chances in the lottery for a spot, or are you willing to do the hefty fundraising effort for a charity bib?
